Removal of heavy metals using waste eggshell

The removal capacity of toxic heavy metals by the reused eggshell was studied. As a pretreatment process for the preparation of reused material from waste eggshell, calcination was performed in the furnace at 800℃ for 2 h after crushing the dried waste eggshell. Calcination behavior, qualitative and quantitative elemental information, mineral type and surface characteristics before and after calcination of eggshell were examined by thermal gravimetric analysis （TGA）, X-ray fluorescence （XRF）, X-ray diffraction （XRD） and scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, respectively. After calcination, the major inorganic composition was identified as Ca （lime, 99.63%） and K, P and Sr were identified as minor components. When calcined eggshell was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing heavy metals, a complete removal of Cd as well as above 99% removal of Cr was observed after 10 rain. Although the natural eggshell had some removal capacity of Cd and Cr, a complete removal was not accomplished even after 60 rain due to quite slower removal rate. However, in contrast to Cd and Cr, an efficient removal of Pb was observed with the natural eggshell rather than the calcined eggshell. From the application of the calcined eggshell in the treatment of real electroplating wastewater, the calcined eggshell showed a promising removal capacity of heavy metal ions as well as had a good neutralization capacity in the treatment of strong acidic wastewater.

In this study, we induced cerebral infarction in rats by occluding the right middle cerebral artery, and tested the effects of electroacupuncture at the Baihui acupoint （DU 20）. Motor and sensory function was tested using Garcia’s scale and motor weakness grading, and the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in the brain was quantified using immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. We found that scalp electroacupuncture at DU 20 significantly improved motor performance and sensory function in rats with stroke, and this was accompanied by an increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in the ischemic brain tissue and peri-ischemic area. In addition, Pearson correlation analysis showed that the improvements in functional recovery were correlated with the increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor.

Risk factors for postoperative recurrence after primary bowel resection in patients with Crohn's disease

AIM To evaluate the risk factors for postoperative recurrence after primary bowel resection in a cohort of Korean Crohn's disease(CD) *** This study included 260 patients with no history of previous bowel surgery who underwent primary surgery for CD between January 2000 and December 2010 at Asan Medical Center(Seoul, South Korea). The median follow-up period was 101 *** During the follow-up period, 66 patients(25.4%) underwent a second operation for disease *** 1, 5 and 10 years after the first operation, the cumulative rate of surgical recurrence was 1.1%, 8.3% and 35.9% and clinical recurrence occurred in 1.2%, 23.6% and 68.1%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, undergoing an emergency operation was a significant risk factor for surgical recurrence-free survival(SRFS) [HR = 2.431, 95%CI: 1.394-4.240, P = 0.002], as were the presence of perianal disease after the first operation(HR = 1.715, 95%CI: 1.005-2.926, P = 0.048) and history of smoking(HR = 1.798, 95%CI: 1.088-2.969, P = 0.022). The postoperative use of antitumor necrosis factor(TNF) agents reduced SRFS risk(HR = 0.521, 95%CI: 0.300-0.904, P = 0.02).CONCLUSION History of smoking, postoperative perianal disease and undergoing an emergency operation were independent risk factors for surgical recurrence. Using anti-TNF agents may reduce surgical recurrence.

The fabrication of an internal diffraction grating with photoinduced refractive index modification in planar hybrid germanium-silica plates was demonstrated using low-density plasma formation excited by a high-intensity femtosecond (150 fs) Ti:sapphire laser (λp=790 nm).The refractive index modifications with diameters ranging from 400 nm to 3 μm were photoinduced after plasma formation occurred upon irradiation with peak intensities of more than 2×1013 W/*** graded refractive index profile was fabricated to be a symmetric around from the center of the point at which low-density plasma occurred.

Membrane-localized leucine-rich repeat receptor kinases(LRR-RKs)sense diverse extracellular signals,and coordinate and specify cellular functions in ***,functional understanding and identification of the cellular signaling of most LRR-RKs remain a major challenge owing to their genetic redundancy,the lack of ligand information,and subtle phenotypes of LRR-RK ***,we report an engineered rapamycin-inducible dimerization(RiD)receptor system that triggers a receptor-specific LRR-RK signaling independent of their cognate ligands or endogenous *** the RiD-receptors,we demonstrated that the rapamycin-mediated association of chimeric cytosolic kinase domains from the BRI1/BAK1 receptor/co-receptor,but not the BRI1/BRI1 or BAK1/BAK1 homodimer,is sufficient to activate downstream brassinosteroid signaling and physiological ***,we showed that the engineered RiD-FLS2/BAK1 could activate flagellin-22-mediated immune signaling and *** the RiD system,we also identified the potential function of an unkmown orphan receptor in immune signaling and revealed the differential activities of SERK co-receptors of *** results indicate that the RiD method can serve as a synthetic biology tool for precise temporal manipulation of LRR-RK signaling and for understanding LRR-RK biology.

Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to consider the concept of Fuzzy Radial Basis Function Neural Networks with Information Granulation(IG-FRBFNN)and their optimization realized by means of the Multiobjective Particle Swarm Optimization(MOPSO).Design/methodology/approach–In fuzzy modeling,complexity,interpretability(or simplicity)as well as accuracy of the obtained model are essential design *** the performance of the IG-RBFNN model is directly affected by some parameters,such as the fuzzification coefficient used in the FCM,the number of rules and the orders of the polynomials in the consequent parts of the rules,the authors carry out both structural as well as parametric optimization of the network.A multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization using Crowding Distance(MOPSO-CD)as well as O/WLS learning-based optimization are exploited to carry out the structural and parametric optimization of the model,respectively,while the optimization is of multiobjective character as it is aimed at the simultaneous minimization of complexity and maximization of ***–The performance of the proposed model is illustrated with the aid of three *** proposed optimization method leads to an accurate and highly interpretable fuzzy ***/value–A MOPSO-CD as well as O/WLS learning-based optimization are exploited,respectively,to carry out the structural and parametric optimization of the *** a result,the proposed methodology is interesting for designing an accurate and highly interpretable fuzzy model.

Clinical course of ulcerative colitis patients who develop acute pancreatitis

To investigate the clinical course of ulcerative colitis (UC) patients who develop acute *** analyzed 3307 UC patients from the inflammatory bowel disease registry at Asan Medical Center from June 1989 to May 2015. The clinical course of UC patients who developed acute pancreatitis was compared with that of non-pancreatitis UC *** 51 patients who developed acute pancreatitis, 13 (0.40%) had autoimmune, 10 (0.30%) had aminosalicylate-induced, and 13 (1.73%) had thiopurine-induced pancreatitis. All 13 patients with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) had type 2 AIP. Two (15.4%) patients had pre-existing AIP, and three (23.1%) patients developed AIP and UC simultaneously. Compared to non-pancreatitis patients, AIP patients had UC diagnosed at a significantly younger age (median, 22.9 years vs 36.4 years; P = 0.001). AIP and aminosalicylate-induced pancreatitis patients had more extensive UC compared to non-pancreatitis patients. All patients with pancreatitis recovered uneventfully, and there were no recurrences. Biologics were used more frequently in aminosalicylate- and thiopurine-induced pancreatitis patients compared to non-pancreatitis patients [adjusted OR (95%CI), 5.16 (1.42-18.67) and 6.90 (1.83-25.98), respectively]. Biologic utilization rate was similar among AIP and non-pancreatitis patients [OR (95%CI), 0.84 (0.11-6.66)]. Colectomy rates for autoimmune, aminosalicylate-induced, and thiopurine-induced pancreatitis, and for non-pancreatitis patients were 15.4% (2/13), 20% (2/10), 15.4% (2/13), and 7.3% (239/3256), respectively; the rates were not significantly different after adjusting for baseline disease *** patients show a non-significant increase in colectomy, after adjusting for baseline disease extent.

Association Analysis of the Amino Acid Contents in Rice

The main objective of the present study was to identify simple sequence repeat （SSR） markers associated with the amino acid content of rice （Oryza sativa L.）. SSR markers were selected by prescreening for the relationship to amino acid content. Eighty-four rice landrace accessions from Korea were evaluated for 16 kinds of amino acids in brown rice and ganotyped with 25 SSR markers. Analysis of population structure revealed four subgroups in the population. Linkage disequilibrium （LD） patterns and distributions are of fundamental importance for genome-wide mapping associations. The mean r^2 value for all intrachromosomal loci pairs was 0.033. LD between linked markers decreased with distance. Marker-trait associations were investigated using the unified mixed-model approach, considering both population structure （Q） and kinship （K）. A total of 42 marker-trait associations with amino acids （P 〈 0.05） were identified using 15 different SSR markers covering three chromosomes and explaining more than 40% of the total variation. These results suggest that association analysis in rice is a viable alternative to quantitative trait loci mapping and should help rice breeders develop strategies for improving rice quality.

Low skeletal muscle mass is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Korean adults： the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

BACKGROUND： Sarcopenia and non-alcoholic fatty liver dis- ease （NAFLD） share similar pathophysiological mechanisms, and the relationship between sarcopenia and NAFLD has been recently investigated. The study investigated whether low skel- etal muscle mass is differentially associated with NAFLD by gender in Korean adults. METHODS： We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The skeletal muscle index （SMI） was obtained by the appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by the weight. NAFLD was defined as a fatty liver index （FLI）〉60 in the absence of other chronic liver disease. RESULTS： Among the included subjects, 18.3% （SE： 1.4%） in men and 7.0% （SE： 0.7%） in women were classified as having FLI-defined NAFLD. Most of the risk factors for FLI-defined NAFLD showed a significant negative correlation with the SMI in both genders. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that low SMI was associated with FLI-defined NAFLD, inde- pendent of other metabolic and lifestyle parameters in both genders [males： odds ratio （OR）=1.35; 95% confidence inter- val （CI）： 1.17-1.54; females： OR=1.36; 95% CI： 1.18-1.55]. The magnitude of the association between FLI-defined NAFLD and low SMI was higher in middle aged to elderly males （OR-1.50; 95% CI： 1.22-1.84） than in males less than 45 years of age （OR=1.25; 95% CI： 1.02-1.52） and in premenopausal females （OR=l.50; 95% CI： 1.12-2.03） than in postmenopausal females （OR-1.36; 95% CI： 1.20-1.54）.CONCLUSIONS： Low SMI is associated with the risk of FLI- defined NAFLD independent of other well-known metabolic risk factors in both genders. This association may differ ac- cording to age group or menopausal status. Further studies are warranted to confirm this relationship.

Extract of buckwheat sprouts scavenges oxidation and inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages (RAW264.7)

OBJECTIVE： Buckwheat has been considered as a potential source of nutraceutical components on the world market of probiotic foodstuffs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of tartary buckwheat （Fagopyrum tataricum） sprouts on oxidation and pro-inflammatory mediators. METHODS： The anti-oxidant effects of buckwheat extract （BWE） and rutin were evaluated by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl （DPPH）-and nitric oxide （NO）-scavenging activities, serum peroxidation and chelating assays. Lipopolysaccharide （LPS）-stimulated RAW264.7 cells were used to evaluate anti-inflammatory activities of buckwheat and rutin. NO production in LPS- stimulated RAW264.7 cells was determined by using Griess reagent. The expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase （iNOS）, cyclooxygenase-2 （COX-2）, nuclear factor-kappa B （NF-κB） p65 subunit in cytosolic and nuclear portions were determined by Western blot analysis. Also, the production of inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 （IL-6） and tumor necrosis factor-α （TNF-α） was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS： Inhibitory concentration 50 values for DPPH- and NO-scavenging activities of BWE were 24.97 and 72.54 μg/mL respectively. BWE inhibited serum oxidation and possessed chelating activity. Furthermore, BWE inhibited IL-6 and TNF-a production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Also, BWE inhibited iNOS and COX-2 expression and NF-KB p65 translocation. CONCLUSION： Buckwheat sprouts possessed strong antioxidant activity and inhibited production of pro-inflammatory mediators in the applied model systems. Thus, buckwheat can be suggested to be beneficial in inflammatory diseases by inhibiting the free radicals and inflammatory mediators.
