Assessing animal individuality:links between personality and laterality in pigs

Animal individuality is challenging to explain because individual differences are regulated by multiple selective forces that lead to unique combinations of *** instance,the study of personality,a core aspect of individuality,may benefit from integrating other factors underlying individual differences,such as lateralized cerebral ***,the approach-withdrawal hypothesis(the left hemisphere controls approach behavior,the right hemisphere controls withdrawal behavior),may account for differences in boldness or exploration between left and right hemispheric dominant *** analyze the relationships between personality and laterality we tested 80 male piglets with established laterality patterns for 2 motor functions(tail curling direction and the side of the snout used for manipulation)and a combined classification integrating both motor functions using cluster *** analyzed basal salivary testosterone and cortisol along with their behavior in standardized tests as pre-established indicators of different personality traits(Boldness,Exploration,Activity,Sociability,and Coping).We found that the direction of the single motor biases showed significant associations with few personality ***,the combined laterality classification showed more,and more robust,significant associations with different personality traits compared with the single motor *** results supported the approachwithdrawal hypothesis because right-biased pigs were bolder and more explorative in a context of ***,right-biased pigs were more sociable than left-biased ***,the present study indicates that personality is indeed related to lateralized cerebral processing and provides insight into the multifactorial nature of individuality.

Preservation of sperm of cancer patients： extent of use and pregnancy outcome in a tertiary infertility center

Sperm cryopreservation is the best modality to ensure future fertility for males diagnosed with cancer. The extent to which cryopreserved sperm is actually used for impregnation, the fertility treatment options that are available and the success rates of these treatments have not been investigated in depth. The medical records of 682 patients who cryopreserved sperm cells due to cancer treatment were analyzed. Seventy of these patients withdrew their frozen sperm for fertility treatments over a 20-year period （most within the first 4 years after cryopreservation）. Sperm quality of different malignancies and outcomes of assisted reproduction treatment （ART） for pregnancy achievement in relation to the type of treatment and the type of malignancy were evaluated. The results showed that the rate of using cryo-thawed sperm from cancer patients for fertility treatments in our unit was 10.3%. Sperm quality indices differed between different types of malignancies, with the poorest quality measured in testicular cancer. Conception was achieved in 46 of the 184 ART cycles （25%）, and resulted in 36 deliveries. The use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection （ICSI） methodology yielded a significantly higher pregnancy rate （37.4%） than intrauterine insemination （IUI; 11.5%） and was similar to other groups of infertile couples using these modalities. In vitro fertilization （IVF） failed to produce pregnancies. In conclusion, the rate of use of cryopresseved sperm in cancer patients is relatively low （10.3%）. Achievement of pregnancies by ICSI presents the best option but when there are enough stored sperm samples and adequate quality, I UI can be employed. Cryopreservation is nevertheless the best option to preserve future fertility potential and hope for cancer patients.

ABSTRACT： According to the most recent WHO classification of hepatocellular adenomas, a small percentage of inflammatory hepatocellular adenomas presents with mutation in the β-catenin gene and are at higher risk of malignant transformation. It has been recognized that adenoma-like hepatocellular neoplasms with focal atypia, or in unusual clinical context present with similar cytogenetic and immunohistochemistry characteristics to well-differentiated hepatocellular carcino- mas.

Hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance and quantile regression for determinants of underutilisation in at-risk Australian patients

BACKGROUND While clinical guidelines recommend hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)surveillance for at-risk individuals,reported surveillance rates in the United States and Europe remain disappointingly *** To quantify HCC surveillance in an Australian cohort,and assess for factors associated with surveillance *** All patients undergoing HCC surveillance liver ultrasounds between January 1,2018 to June 30,2018 at a tertiary hospital in Melbourne,Australia,were followed until July 31,2020,or when surveillance was no longer *** primary outcome was the percentage of time up-to-date with HCC surveillance(PTUDS).Quantile regression was performed to determine the impact of factors associated with HCC surveillance *** Among 775 at-risk patients followed up for a median of 27.5 months,the median PTUDS was 84.2%(IQR:66.3%-96.3%).85.0%of patients were followed up by specialist *** those receiving specialist care,quantile regression demonstrated differential associations at various quantile levels of PTUDS for several *** age at the 25th quantile(estimate 0.002 per percent,P=0.03),and cirrhotic status at the 75th quantile(estimate 0.021,P=0.017),were significantly associated with greater percentage of time *** ethnicity(estimate-0.089,P=0.048)and a culturally and linguistically diverse(CALD)background(estimate-0.063,P=0.01)were significantly associated with lower PTUDS at the 50th quantile,and again for CALD at the 75th quantile(estimate-0.026,P=0.045).CONCLUSION While median PTUDS in this Australian cohort study was 84.2%,awareness of the impact of specific factors across PTUDS quantiles can aid targeted interventions towards improved HCC surveillance.

MYC plays a central role in tumorigenesis by orchestrating cell proliferation,growth and survival,among other transformation *** particular,MYC has often been associated with *** fact,MYC overexpressing lymphomas such as high-grade B-cell lymphoma(HGBL)and double expressor diffuse large B-cell lymphomas(DLBCL),are considered addicted to *** such a context,MYC targeting therapies are of special interest,as MYC withdrawal is expected to result in tumor ***,whether high MYC levels are always predictive of increased sensitivity to these approaches is not clear *** though no MYC inhibitor has received regulatory approval to date,substantial efforts have been made to investigate avenues to render MYC a druggable ***,we summarize the different classes of molecules currently under development,which mostly target MYC indirectly in aggressive B-cell lymphomas,paying special attention to subtypes with MYC/BCL2 or BCL6 translocations or overexpression.

Antimicrobial properties of sea anemone Anthopleura nigrescens from Pacific coast of Costa Rica

Objective: To evaluate the antimicrobial and antifungal activities of the aqueous and partitioned extract of sea anemone Anthopleura nigrescens(A. nigrescens).Methods: The sea anemone A. nigrescens was collected, minced, homogenized,lyophilized and then further partitioned with diethyl ether, acetone, ethanol and *** fractions were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against bacterial and fungal ***: Acetone extract was found to produce a pronounced inhibition of 7.0 mm against Proteus vulgaris and diethyl ether extract inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa with an inhibition zone of 6.5 mm. In antifungal activity, ethanol extract showed good activity against Botrytis cinerea, Trichoderma harzianum and Rhizopus oryzae compared with other strains. Acetone and ethanol extract of A. nigrescens showed activity against all of pathogens tested. Slight activity was observed in the water extract with inhibition zone of 1.5 ***: The present study revealed that sea anemone A. nigrescens may also contain some biologically active agents which have potential activity against pathogenic microorganisms.

Feed supplementation withα-linolenic acid(ALA)and linoleic acid(LA)increases their content in muscle,ALA increases n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and decrease n-6/n-3 ratio in muscle,and LA increases rumenic ***,high LA supplementation may have negative effects on lambs’lipid oxidative stability of *** the sources of ALA and LA are fed as fresh forage,the negative effects are counterbalanced by the presence of other bioactive compounds,as vitamin E(mainlyα-tocopherol)and polyphenols,which delay the lipid oxidation in *** is a wide consensus on the capability of vitamin E delaying lipid oxidation on lamb meat,and its feed content should be adjusted to the length of supplementation.A high dietary inclusion of proanthocyanidins,phenolic compounds and terpenes reduce the lipid oxidation in muscle and may improve the shelf life of meat,probably as a result of a combined effect with dietary vitamin ***,the recommended dietary inclusion levels depend on the polyphenol type and concentration and antioxidant capacity of the feedstuffs,which cannot be compared easily because no routine analytical grading methods are yet *** phenolic compounds content in dietary ingredients/supplements for lambs are reported,no specific association with animal physiology responses may be established.

The role of aggression in range expansion and biological invasions

Traits that aid in the invasion process should exhibit a gradient across the expansion range in response to changing selection pressures. Aggression has been repeatedly associated with invasion success in many taxa, as it may help invaders to wrestle the resources from other species which enhances their success in a novel environment. However, aggression primarily al lows individuals to overcome conspecific rivals, providing advantages in competition over resources. Agonistic prowess could therefore increase fitness at both ends of the expansion gradient. Here we review the role of aggression in range expansion of in vasive species, and its potential role as a driver of range expansion. We analyze how these different mechanisms could affect trait variation in expanding and invasive populations. Specifically, we look at how aggression could help dilate the edges of a popula tion through niche competition, as well as lead to exclusion from the center （Le. areas of high population density） by the conspe cities. Both of these processes will result in a characteristic spatial distribution of phenotypes related to aggression that could provide insights into the ecological pressures and dynamics of expanding populations, potentially providing clues to their success as niche competitors and invasive species

Development of Junction Elements from Study of the Bionics

The applications of bionic methodology developed by the Laboratory of Design and Material Selection as basis in the creation of junction elements were demonstrated. These elements favor the application of Ecodesign in reference to the effectiveness of product dismount aiming the reduction of ambient impact in all its phases of use. The creation, the development and the confection of new junction elements were described, and case studies of new products developed specifically with this purpose were presented.
