Objective: To compare the effects of high-monounsaturated(MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) against the metabolic disorders elicited by a high-cholesterol diet(HC) in rats. Methods: Using in vivo dietary manipulation, rats were fed with different diets containing 4% soybean oil(cholesterol free diet) and 1% HC containing 12% olive oil(HC+OO) enriched with MUFA and 12% sunflower oil(HC+SO) enriched with PUFA for 60 d. Serum lipid levels and hepatic steatosis were evaluated after the treatment period. Results: Comparatively, rats treated with HC+OO diet experienced a decrease in the serum LDL-C, VLDL-C and CT levels compared to those fed with HC+SO diet(P<0.05). Otherwise, HC+OO provoked significant microvesicular steatosis situated in the hepatic acinar zone 1. Conclusions: HC+OO diet has high absorption velocity in the acinar zone 1 of liver compared to the HC+SO diet. Based on this, the reduction of the LDL-C, VLDL-C and CT serum levels in the animals treated with HC+OO diet can be caused by the delay in the FA release to the blood.

Water scarcity is pushing the government,industries and researchers to the development of new strategies for water and wastewater *** approach aimed at the optimization of the water use and minimization of effluent generation was developed at the Centro Experimental ARAMAR(CEA),a nuclear research facility,located in the State of Sao Paulo,*** scale tests followed by a pilot plant treating effluents from some nuclear research facilities have shown the results leading to the conclusion that the effluent zero release concept is *** on the gathered data,a project of an integrated effluent treatment system focusing on water recovery and environmental effluent release reduction has been developed.

Throughout history, humanity has referred to reactions occurring with food, plants and, recently, medicines or drugs. The increase in pulmonary tuberculosis cases and the availability of treatment showed that genetic human differences can interfere in the capacity to metabolize drugs. There are remarkable genetic polymorphisms of N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) activity that have been associated with different levels of susceptibility to developing many kinds of cancers. This review considers the field as an open window for the application of molecular epidemiology tools that led to the development of pharmacogenomics. We cover historical data and the most recent knowledge about NAT2 genetic polymorphisms and its distribution in different populations, which is an important concept being incorporated in epidemiological studies of cancer risk. We present up to date information about these studies, including meta-analysis based on the NAT2 distribution in different types of cancer. A critical broad at advances in NAT2 research, high-lighting recent studies related to NAT2 alleles in cancer susceptibility. Although there are multifactorial aspects involved in cancer risk, the variability in NAT2 allelic frequency can be related to carcinogenesis through alterations in the metabolic rate after exposure to carcinogens.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of agnuside(AGN),a phytoestrogen in Vitex agnus-castus,on cellular and metabolic alterations induced by ovariectomy in ***(OVX)Wistar rats were used as an animal model of postmenopausal metabolic *** visceral and subcutaneous adipocyte sizes,the peripheral insulin sensitivity and the occurrence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and liver oxidative damage were *** results were compared with those obtained from control rats(sham-operated)and OVX rats treated daily with *** OVX rats exhibited visceral adipocyte hypertrophy and developed glucose intolerance,hyperinsulinemia,NAFLD and *** exerted beneficial effects on several metabolic parameters in OVX rats,including the improvement in glucose intolerance,hyperinsulinemia and ***,AGN promoted a general improvement in the liver redox *** the reduction of the mesenteric adipocyte size is very likely to be an important mode of action of AGN,some actions of AGN could also involve the interaction with estrogen receptors.
