Hyptis suaveolens （L.） Poit. is an invasive alien weed commonly known as ＂Bana tulst＂ in Odisha belonging to the family Lamiaceae and widely distributed in different parts of India. The leaves of the plant have been reported to be used as stimulant, carminative, sudorific and also as a cure for parasitic cutaneous diseases besides the crude leaf extract is reported to be used against colic and stomach-ache. The leaves are the source of different alkaloids, terpenes and volatile oils having allelopathic effect. In view of this the present work was carried out with an aim to investigate the allelopathic effect upon germination of rice （Oryza sativa L.）. The result indicated that the higher concentration of the leaf leachate could decrease the percentage of germination besides identified as a potential bio-herbicide.

Introduction: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction can occur early and late in patients after intracardiac repair (ICR) for Tetralogy of Fallots (TOF). This study focuses on early RV dysfunction as there is limited data on it. Aims & Objective: RV function was studied with respect to its incidence, course over 3 months, co-relation with peri operative factors and serum iron levels. Material & Method: All patients of TOF undergoing ICR during July 2007-October 2008, done by single surgeon at a single centre, were prospectively studied. Patients were divided into group A (with RV dysfunction) and group B (without RV dysfunction). All patients underwent pre operative & post operative clinical assessment, biochemical evaluation (serum iron profile & CK MB) and 2D echocardiography (pulse Doppler & tissue Doppler). Echocardiography was done at 24 hours, 4 weeks & 12 weeks of ICR. Patients were also assessed for intra operative parameters including cross clamp time, by pass time, acidosis, RV and PA pressures. Results: 24 patients underwent ICR (transannular patch repair) with mean age of 7.31 ± 4.74 years. RV dysfunction was present in 13 patients (54.2%) but was persistent only in 15.3% (2/13) at 12 weeks. Presence of cyanotic spell (p = 0.006), recurrent chest infection (p = 0.002), raised heamatocrit (p = 0.02), and rise in serum iron level (p = 0.002) were significantly associated with post operative RV dysfunction. It resulted in prolong ICU stay and slower recovery. Pre operative RV dysfunction was associated with difficult weaning from bypass and poor post operative outcome (p < 0.001). Conclusion: RV dysfunction is commonly present even after satisfactory ICR. Its aetiology remains unclear in such setting. In our study, pre operative clinical profile and serum iron fluctuations were important determinants of post operative outcome.

The goal of this paper is to design and develop low conversion loss mixers at Ku Band (12 - 18 GHz) in microstrip line configuration. The Ku-band (Kurtz-under band) is primarily used for satellite Communications, particularly for editing and broadcasting satellite television. CAD tools (Agilent’s Advance Design System software) have been used for simulation and optimization of the circuits. 180 degree balanced mixer configuration has been adopted due to better RF to LO isolation requirement. The circuit is designed on microstrip line using RT Duroid (Dielectric Constant = 2.22). Initially a rat race coupler (180 degree hybrid) was designed and simulated and optimized for required performance successfully.

AIM: To compare resistin mRNA expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and its correlation with insulin resistance (IR) in postmenopausal obese women. METHODS: A total of 68 postmenopausal women (non obese = 34 and obese = 34) were enrolled for the study. The women of the two groups were age matched (49-70 years). Fasting blood samples were collected at admission and abdominal SAT was obtained during surgery for gall bladder stones or hysterectomy. Physical parameters [age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI)] were measured. Biochemical (plasma insulin and plasma glucose) parameters were estimated by enzymatic methods. RNA was isolated by the Trizol *** resistin mRNA expression was done by real time- reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) by using Quanti Tect SYBR Green RT-PCR master mix. Data was analyzed using independent Student's t test, correlation and simple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The mean weight (52.81 ± 8.04 kg vs 79.56 ± 9.91 kg; P < 0.001), BMI (20.23 ± 3.05 kg/m 2 vs 32.19 ± 4.86 kg/m 2 ; P < 0.001), insulin (8.47 ± 3.24 U/mL vs 14.67 ± 2.18 U/mL; P < 0.001), glucose (97.44 ± 11.31 mg/dL vs 109.67 ± 8.02 mg/dL; P < 0.001) and homeostasis model assessment index (2.01 ± 0.73 vs 3.96 ± 0.61; P < 0.001) were significantly higher in postmenopausal obese women compared to postmenopausal non obese women. The mean serum resistin level was also significantly higher in postmeno-pausal obese women compared to postmenopausal non obese women (9.05 ± 5.15 vs 13.92 ± 6.32, P < 0.001). Furthermore, the mean SAT resistin mRNA expression was also significantly (0.023 ± 0.008 vs 0.036 ± 0.009; P < 0.001) higher and over expressed 1.62 fold (upregulated) in postmenopausal obese women compared to postmenopausal non obese women. Background: Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy (CAV) is characterized by vascular inflammation and intimal proliferation which results in luminal stenosis and myocardial infarction. During vascular inflammation elaboration of several cytokines and differential expression of growth factors have been noted. CAV remains the major threat to long-term graft survival. CD4 and CD8 T-cell subsets play a significant role in the development of transplant rejection. Chronic transplant rejection often leads to development of CAV. A new CD4 effector cell subset that produces IL-17 (Th17) has been shown to be up-regulated in the murine system in the setting of CAV. This study assesses the level of IL-17 in cardiac transplant patients with and without CAV as compared to nontransplanted controls. Methods: Levels of IL-17, IL-6, MCP-1 were measured by ELISA in plasma of four nontransplanted controls, nine cardiac allograft recipients with CAV (HT-GVD) and eight post transplant subjects without a diagnosis of CAV (HT-No GVD). All post transplant patients were immune suppressed with cyclosporine. HT-GVD patients were 1-15 years post transplant while HT-No GVD subjects were 1 - 10 years post transplant. Results: IL-17, MCP-1 and IL-6 were significantly down regulated in HT-GVD subjects compared to the HT-No GVD subjects (p 0.001) but not significant between controls and HT-No GVD (p = ns). Conclusions: A decrease in IL-17 in HT-GVD subjects as compared to HT-No GVD in the presence of cyclosporine treatment could be a consequence of down regulation of IL-6. It is likely that cyclosporine differentially regulates pro inflammatory molecules in the setting of graft vascular disease.

Background: Although at times small amounts of pleural fluid is detected on the lateral decubitus chest radiograph, this may be impossible to obtain in severely ill patients. Because of its ready availability and ability for bedside imaging, ultrasonography has become a crucial imaging modality not only in detecting the presence of pleural fluid but also as a guide to aspiration. Aims: To sonographically determine the nature of pleural effusions. To analyze predictability of both benign and malignant pleural effusions and to study statistical value of various ultrasound characteristics in differentiating exudative and transudative as well as benign and malignant effusions in correlation with thoracocentesis. Material and Methods: Sonographic feature as well as fluid cytology was evaluated. Following categorization into exudates or transudate as well as benign or malignant the diagnosis was then correlated biochemically. Results: Transudates were anechoic, while an anechoic effusion may be either a transudate or an exudate. Complex septation, internal echoes, thickened pleura or homogeneously echogenic patterns were always exudates. Sonographic findings of pleural nodules and associated parenchymal lesions in the lung and liver were indicative of malignancy. Conclusions: Ultrasound in addition to being highly sensitive for pleural effusion also aided in characterizing the nature and minimizing the complications during thoracocentesis. Pleural effusions were categorized into exudates and transudate as well as benign and malignant with a certain degree of confidence based on sonographic findings.
