Chemical composition and source apportionment of PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 in Trombay （Mumbai, India）, a coastal industrial area

PM2.5 and PM2.5 lo concentrations, elemental constituents, and sources in a densely populated coastal industrial area （Trombay, Mumbai） were investigated in 2010 and *** PM2.s and PM2.s lo concentra- tions were 13.50-71.60 and 22.40-127.78 p^g/m3, respectively. The daily PM25 concentrations exceeded the Indian Central Pollution Control Board limit （60 μg/m3） several days in winter. Of the elements analyzed, Si then Al had the highest concentrations in PM2.5- 10, but black carbon then Si had the highest concentrations in PM2.s. The element concentrations varied widely by season. Al, Ca, Fe, Si, and Ti con- centrations were highest in summer, Cl, Mg, and Na concentrations were highest in the monsoon season, and the other trace metal concentrations in both PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 were highest in winter. The PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 sources were apportioned by positive matrix factorization. PM2.5 and PM2.5-10 had six dominant sources, crustal material （8.7% and 25.3%, respectively）, sea salt spray （6.1% and 15.0%, respectively）, coal/biomass combustion （25.5% and 13.8%, respectively）, fuel oil combustion （19.0% and 11.2%, respectively）, road traffic （ 17.7% and 12.6%, respectively）, and the metal industry （ 10.6% and 7.0%, respectively）. Anthropogenic sources clearly contributed most to PM2.5 but natural sources contributed most to PM2.5-10.

The present paper reports the effective utilization of marble sludge powder(MSP)for the recovery of potash values from waste mica scrap using chlorination roasting-water leaching *** studies indicated the presence of dolomite as the major mineral phase in MSP,whereas muscovite and quartz were observed in the mica *** acid leaching studies suggest a maximum of 22%potash recovery under conditions:4 M H2SO4 acid,particle size of^100μm,stirring speed of 600 r/min,leaching temperature of 75℃,and leaching time of 90 *** chlorination roasting-water leaching process was adopted to achieve the lowest level of 80%-90%potash *** optimum conditions for the recovery of^93%potash from mica(~8.6wt%K2O)requires 900℃ roasting temperature,30 min roasting time,and 1:1:0.75 mass ratio of mica:MSP:*** roasting temperature and amount of NaCl are found to be the most important factors for the recovery *** reaction mechanism suggests the formation of different mineral phases,including sylvite(KCl),wollastonite,kyanite,and enstatite,during roasting,which were confirmed by X-ray diffraction(XRD)analyses and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)*** MSP-blended NaCl additive is more effective for potash recovery compared with the other reported commercial roasting additives.

This paper investigates the impact of cold and snow on daily and hourly truck traffic volume on a primary highway in Alberta, Canada. This research is based on a detailed case study of 5 years of weigh-in-motion data recorded continuously at Leduc site on Highway 2A. Influence of the winter conditions on truck type distribution is examined by classifying trucks into single-unit trucks, single-trailer, and multi-trailer units. It is evident from the study that proportion of the three truck classes in the total truck traffic remained essentially stable over the study period （2005-2009）. Dummy-variable regression models are used to relate daily and hourly truck traffic volume with snowfall and categorized cold as independent variables. The statistical significance of all the independent variables used in the model is established by conducting tests such as R2, F test, incremental F test, and t test. The study results suggested that the truck volume is not significantly affected by the normal snowfall or the typical cold temperatures, i.e., average daily snowfall about less than 15 cm or temperatures higher than -25 ℃ are not likely to affect the truck traffic patterns. It is believed that the findings of this study can benefit highway agencies in developing programs and policies for efficient monitoring of truck traffic throughout the year and snow removal during the winter season in Canada.

Potassium recovery from muscovite using NaCl-roasting followed by H_(2)SO_(4)-leaching

The present study aims at the recovery of potassium from muscovite mica(which contains K_(2)O;~10 wt%)using NaCl-roasting coupled with H_(2)SO_(4)-leaching *** preliminary acid leaching studies applying different mineral acids resulted in a potassium recovery of 8%−18%.The optimum leaching conditions for the maximum recovery were 4 mol/L H_(2)SO_(4),60 min leaching time and liquid-solid ratio 4 mL/g at 90℃.However,the roasting of muscovite with additive NaCl(muscovite:NaCl mass ratio of 1:1.00,900℃,45 min)followed by H_(2)SO_(4)-leaching(95℃,60 min)extracted potassium to the tune of 98%.Under similar roasting conditions,the H_(2)O-leaching process extracted only 60%of *** effects of various roasting and leaching parameters such as temperature,time,NaCl concentration,acid concentration,liquid-solid ratio on potassium extraction were *** appearance of the sylvite(KCl)mineral phase in the NaCl-roasted muscovite and its disappearance in the acid/water leached residue confirmed the physical and chemical distortions of the muscovite crystal *** possible mechanism of potassium release from the complex muscovite structure was elucidated based on available literature substantiated by characterizations using X-ray diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy(SEM-EDX).

Objective:To understand the level of progesterone (P4) in different quality of buffalo cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) and further to evaluate the effect of exogenous P4 supplementation on maturation and subsequent developmental ability of poor quality brilliant cresyl blue (BCB-)***: Progesterone secreted by different quality of buffalo oocytes was estimated by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and the concentration differences were translated into P4 doses to be incorporated in the maturation medium of BCB-ve COCs followed by expression analysis of genes involved in the cumulus expansion, extracellular matrix disintegration and progesterone receptor signalling. In addition, the study also evaluated the effect of exogenous P4 on sperm-cumulus interaction. Results: More than 10-fold up-regulated expression of progesterone receptor in P4 supplemented oocytes signified that P4 might be acting predominantly through this receptor. Also, exogenous P4 supplementation had significant effect on transcatheter arterial chemoembolization protease regulated by P4-progesterone receptor pathway which in turn had an important role in extracellular matrix disintegration. On the contrary, cumulus expansion genesHAS2,TNFAIP6,AREG were not altered upon P4 supplementation. Also, it was observed that P4 addition did facilitate passage of significantly more number of spermatozoa through P4 treated cumulus cells. Further, incorporation of different doses of P4 did not improve significantly the cleavage and blastocyst rates of BCB-ve ***: Different qualities of buffalo COCs secrete substantially diverse levels of P4, and its supplementation has a role in oocyte maturation via modulation of cumulus characteristics but perhaps not fertilization.

An Experience on Normothermic Beating Heart Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy

Objective: To study the outcome of normothermic beating heart pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) performed in patients with chronic pulmonary thromboembolism. Methodology: A retrospective analysis of 15 patients who underwent PTE under normothermic beating heart cardio-pulmonary bypass from July 2009 to September 2018 was done. The patients were followed up with clinical assessment, transthoracic echocardiography and computerized tomographicangiography (CTA) for 1 month to 82 months. Results: Data were analysed for 15 consecutive patients. Mean age of the patients was 35.28 years and 10 patients were male. Pre-operatively 6 (40%) patients presented with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II dyspnoea on exertion symptomatology, 7 (47%) were in NHYA class III, and 2 (13%) were in NYHA class IV. The preoperative and postoperative mean pulmonary artery pressures (mPAP) (mmHg) were 36.50 ± 11.3 and 20.21 ± 7.19, the systolic PAPs (mmHg) were 73.35 ± 14.12 and 35.21 ± 7.89 and the diastolic PAPs (mmHg) were 19.28 ± 8.60 and 12.85 ± 7.26 respectively. 2 (13%) patients had Jamieson’s type I and 12 (87%) had Jamieson type II disease. One patient (7%) expired on 9th postoperative day. All the patients had improved pulmonary gas exchange and did not require oxygen supplementation from 5th postoperative day;symptoms improved to NYHA class I & II in 12 (80%) & 3 (20%) of patients respectively. There was no reperfusion pulmonary edema or any neurologic complications. Postoperative echocardiogram showed improved right ventricular function and Computerised Tomographic Angiogram showed completeness of the procedure. Conclusion: Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy under normothermic beating heart cardiopulmonary bypass has good immediate postoperative results with significant progressive improvement in hemodynamics and quality of life during the course of follow-up. Liquid lead-lithium (Pb-16Li) is of primary interest as one of the candidate materials for tritium breeder, neutron multiplier and coolant fluid in liquid metal blanket concepts relevant to fusion power plants. For an effective and reliable operation of such high temperature liquid metal systems, monitoring and control of critical process parameters is essential. However, limited operational experience coupled with high temperature operating conditions and corrosive nature of Pb-16Li severely limited application of commercially available diagnostic tools. This paper illustrates indigenous calibration test facility designs and experimental methods used to develop non-contact configuration level diagnostics using pulse radar level sensor, wetted configuration pressure diagnostics using diaphragm seal type pressure sensor and bulk temperature diagnostics with temperature profiling for high temperature, high pressure liquid Pb and Pb-16Li applications. Calibration check of these sensors was performed using analytical methods, at temperature between 380°C - 400°C and pressure upto 1 MPa (g). Reliability and performance validation were achieved through long duration testing of sensors in liquid Pb and liquid Pb-16Li environment for over 1000 hour. Estimated deviation for radar level sensor lies within [−3.36 mm, +13.64 mm] and the estimated error for pressure sensor lies within 1.1% of calibrated span over the entire test duration. Results obtained and critical observations from these tests are presented in this paper.
