Background:Protected areas(PAs)are aimed to hold the environmental conditions that facilitate species and ecosystems to *** can become climatically unsuitable and unable to sustain their current number of species under climate *** natura 2000(n2K)is the largest coordinated conservation tool assigned to maintain the long-term survival of Europe’s most significant species and *** attempting to understand the effectiveness of PAs in the face of climate change scenarios,we tested two hypotheses:(1)PAs in the Alpine and the Boreal biogeographical regions will experience more newly emerged climate conditions(hotter and drier)compared to the climate representation of other biogeographical regions under future climate in Europe and(2)PAs in the Mediterranean and the Continental biogeographical regions will face more consistency in climate conditions due to less area of disappearing and novel climate in ***:Current climate data(1960–1990)and projections for 2050 and 2070 of PAs of n2K were extracted from WorldClim global climate *** components analysis(PCA)was performed to construct climate space for the PAs across the biogeographical regions based on 19 climatic variables assessed at 5-km *** 10.1 was used to map the location of the novel and disappearing ***:PAs in the Alpine region will experience more novel climate conditions in the future compared to other biogeographical *** future projections showed that 17.70%of the PAs in the Alpine region will experience novel climate by *** climate consistency was observed in the PAs in the Continental region compared to the other biogeographical *** results showed that about 176 km2 of the selected PAs in the Continental region will face new emerging climate,while about 110 km2 will disappear under RCP 8.5 *** prediction also revealed that in the Mediterranean region 08 PAs will experience novel climate and 786 km2 areas

Water Supply Changes n and P Conservation in a Perennial Grass Leymus chinensis

Changes in precipitation can influence soil water and nutrient availability, and thus affect plant nutrient conservation strategies. Better understanding of how nutrient conservation changes with variations in water availability is crucial for predicting the potential influence of global climate change on plant nutrient-use strategy. Here, green-leaf nitrogen （n） and phosphorus （P） concentrations, n- and P-resorption proficiency （the terminal n and P concentration in senescent leaves, nRP and PRP, respectively）, and n- and P-resorption efficiency （the proportional n and P withdrawn from senescent leaves prior to abscission, nRE and PRE, respectively） of Leymus chinensis （Trin.） Tzveh, a typical perennial grass species in northern China, were examined along a water supply gradient to explore how plant nutrient conservation responds to water change. Increasing water supply at low levels （〈 9000 mL/year） increased nRP, PRP and PRE, but decreased green-leaf n concentration. It did not significantly affect green-leaf P concentration or nRE. By contrast, all n and P conservation indicators were not significantly influenced at high water supply levels （〉 9000 mL/year）. These results indicated that changes in water availability at low levels could affect leaf-level nutrient characteristics, especially for the species in semiarid ecosystems. Therefore, global changes in precipitation may pose effects on plant nutrient economy, and thus on nutrient cycling in the plant-soil systems.

Impact of chronic disease self-management programs on type 2 diabetes management in primary care

AIM: To assess the effectiveness of the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program(CDSMP) on glycated hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) and selected self-reported ***: We compared patients who received a diabetes self-care behavioral intervention, the CDSMP developed at the Stanford University, with controls whoreceived usual care on their HbA1c and selected self-reported measures, including diabetes self-care activities, health-related quality of life(HRQOL), pain and fatigue. The subjects were a subset of participants enrolled in a randomized controlled trial that took place at seven regional clinics of a university-affiliated integrated healthcare system of a multi-specialty group practice between January 2009 and June 2011. The primary outcome was change in HbA1c from randomization to 12 mo. Data were analyzed using multilevel statistical models and linear mixed models to provide unbiased estimates of intervention ***: Demographic and baseline clinical characteristics were generally comparable between the two groups. The average baseline HbA1c values in the CDSMP and control groups were 9.4% and 9.2%, respectively. Significant reductions in HbA1c were seen at 12 mo for the two groups, with adjusted changes around 0.6%(P ns did not differ significantly between the two groups(P = 0.885). Few significant differences were observed in participants' diabetes self-care activities. no significant differences were observed in the participants' HRQOL, pain, or fatigue ***: The CDSMP intervention may not lower HbA1c any better than good routine care in an integrated healthcare system. More research is needed to understand the benefits of self-management programs in primary care in different settings and populations.

The influence of mobility among high-risk populations on HIV transmission in Western Kenya

Western Kenya suffers a highly endemic and also very heterogeneous epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).Although female sex workers(FSW)and their male clients are known to be at high risk for HIV,HIV prevalence across regions inWestern Kenya is not strongly correlated with the fraction of women engaged in commercial *** agentbased network model of HIV transmission,geographically stratified at the county level,was fit to the HIV epidemic,scale-up of interventions,and populations of FSW in Western Kenya under two assumptions about the potential mobility of FSW *** the first,all clients were assumed to be resident in the same geographies as their interactions with *** the second,some clients were considered non-resident and engaged only in interactions with FSW,but not in longer-term non-FSW partnerships in these *** both assumptions,the model successfully reconciled disparate geographic patterns of FSW and HIV *** patterns in the model suggest a greater role for FSW in local transmission when clients were resident to the counties,with 30.0%of local HIV transmissions attributable to current and former FSW and clients,compared to 21.9%when mobility of clients was ***,the overall epidemic drivers remained similar,with risky behavior in the general population dominating transmission in highprevalence *** modeling suggests that co-location of high-risk populations and generalized epidemics can further amplify the spread of HIV,but that large numbers of formal FSW and clients are not required to observe or mechanistically explain high HIV prevalence in the general population.

Poultry litter biochar application in combination with chemical fertilizer and Azolla green manure improves rice grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency in paddy soil

Poultry litter biochar is known to improve crop ***,its beneficial interactions with chemical fertilizer and/or organic manure on rice yield and nitrogen(n)use efficiency(nUE)are not well *** objective of this study was to co-apply poultry litter biochar(hereinafter biochar)and chemical fertilizer and/or Azolla as organic manure(herein n fertilizer sources)to improve the productivity of rice and *** treatments-no amendments(control),chemical fertilizer(nPK),Azolla as green manure(Azolla),and nPK+Azolla without and with biochar amendment-were evalu-ated in a pot *** rice plant growth components,yield,and nUE were *** to the treatments without biochar,co-application of biochar and n fertilizer sources significantly improved grain n uptake by 23.9%and nUE by 34.3-246.9%.These treatments also significantly improved rice growth components(5.6-18.2%)and grain yield(32.4%).Significant changes in soil properties including increases in pH,electrical conductivity(EC),total n,organic car-bon,and available phosphorus were observed following biochar *** for the soil pH and EC parameters,no significant synergistic interactions between biochar and n fertilizer sources were observed for any parameters in the present ***,compared to other treatments,the co-application of biochar and Azolla offers a feasible approach to improve rice productivity and nUE and reduce chemical fertilizer use,thereby reducing agricultural pollution and production costs.

Dear Editor,Takotsubo syndrome(TS)is a stress-induced non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy that is more common in women,but is associated with higher morbidity and mortality in *** known as broken-heart syndrome,TS is characterised by transient left ventricular(LV)dysfunction independent of obstructive coronary artery *** is a polygenic condition and nowhere is this more evident than the use of positive inotropes,such as isoprenaline(ISO)in pre-clinical models.1 There is no standard therapy for broken-heart syndrome because the mechanisms underlying the condition remain ***,there is no consensus on predisposition for Takotsubo2 and our goal was to better understand the regulatory mechanism as a first step towards improved treatment *** acid or SAHA,a drug approved for cancer treatment by the US Food and Drug Administration has previously been shown to improve cardiopulmonary function.3 We tested the hypothesis that the cardioprotective benefit of SAHA in a pre-clinical model of Takotsubo is conferred by an epigenetic acetylation/deacetylation(Ac/Dc)axis.

Effects of Supplemental Glutamine and Lysine on Growth Performance of Broiler Chickens

The optimum levels of Lysine and Glutamine needed for growth performance and maintenance of the chicken broilers were evaluated in a randomized 3 × 4 factorial arrangement of dietary treatments. The battery cages measured 99 × 66 × 25 cm that can be sufficient for 5 birds. Day old Chicken broilers totaling 180 were assigned to dietary treatments comprising of 3 concentrations of Lysine (0.85, 1.14, and 1.42) each in combination with 4 concentrations of Glutamine (0, 1, 2, and 3). Each dietary treatment was replicated 3 times and each replication had 5 birds. The birds were given feed and water ad libitum with a 23-hour light regimen for a period of 4 weeks. Then, the experimental birds were evaluated for body weight gain, feed consumption, and feed conversion in order to determine their optimum requirement for dietary Lysine and Glutamine. Based on the findings of this study, the highest performance was observed in birds fed the diet supplemented with 1.42 lysine and 1% glutamine, but the highest improvement in feed conversion was observed in diet contain 1.14 and 1.42 with 1% and 3% glutamine, respectively. Birds fed 1.42 lysine and 1% glutamine had the highest total body weight gain and feed consumption. The lysine requirements in the diet for Chicken are between 1.14 and 1.42 with glutamine level of 1%.

Serotypes and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of nasopharyngeal Pneumococci Isolated from HIV-Infected Children in Selected Pediatric Clinics in nairobi, Kenya

Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is one of the most frequent causes of bacterial infection in children and is a leading cause of otitis, sinusitis, pneumonia, and meningitis worldwide. nasopharyngeal colonization is a risk factor for pneumococcal disease, a leading cause of complications and death in infants. HIV-infected persons are at high risk of invasive pneumococcal disease. Method: nasopharyngeal swabs were collected from 296 HIV infected children below five years recruited from Gertrude’s Children hospital and nazareth Hospital nairobi, Kenya. The nasopharyngeal swabs were processed to isolate S. pneumoniae, which were serotyped and tested for drug susceptibility. Results: The carriage prevalence of S. pneumoniae in the study was 30.4% while the isolated serotypes were (in order of decreasing frequency): 35B, 19F, 3, 13, 15A, 11A, 16F, 7C and 23A. Most of the serotypes were resistant to the commonly used antibiotics but all were susceptible to vancomycin and chloramphenicol. Conclusion: Carriage prevalence of nasopharyngeal S. pneumonia in HIV infected children was lower than that of similar prevalence studies in children. Most of the S. pneumoniae isolates were however non pneumococcal vaccine isolates.

Effects of Calcium nitrate Levels and Soaking Durations on Cocopeat nutrient Content

Cocopeat, a by-product of the coconut (Cocos nucifera L.), is an important soilless media that contains high potassium (K), sodium (na), and electrical conductivity (EC) depending on its source. Methods for extracting these elements and thus lowering EC are yet to be standardized. This study was therefore carried out to investigate two extraction methods of these elements in cocopeat. A greenhouse pot experiment was carried out at the Climate and Water Smart Agriculture Centre of Egerton University, Kenya. It was laid out in a 5 × 4 factorial completely randomized design. Five soaking durations (12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 hours) and four calcium nitrate (Ca(nO3)2) levels (0, 60, 100, and 150 g) were used. The experiment was done in two folds: the leachate and treated cocopeat examination for their chemical properties. The General Linear Model procedures were used for Analysis of Variance at (P ≤ 0.05). The results showed that the addition of Ca(nO3)2 100 g extracted significantly more K and na in the leachate than Ca(nO3)2 0.0 g and 60 g. The EC levels in the leachate increased with the application levels of Ca(nO3)2 while the pH levels were reducing. In the treated cocopeat, Ca(nO3)2 100 g and soaking duration 36 hours significantly reduced K and na and sufficiently supplemented Ca and n. Irrespective of Ca(nO3)2 and soaking durations, after the cocopeat is washed, the EC and pH values fall within their suitable ranges. There was a strong negative correlation between Ca and na, Ca and K, and between na and EC. Also, strong positive correlation between Ca and n and Ca and EC. Effective supplementation of Ca and n, and optimal reduction of K and na by 78.44% and 92%, respectively can be achieved with 100 g of Ca(nO3)2 1.5 kg-1 of cocopeat in 15 liters of water with a soaking duration of 36 hours.
