Stochastic Model of Waiting Time: A Case of Two Selected b.nks in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis

Queue is an act of joining a line to b. served and it is part of our everyday human involvement. The ob.ectives of the study focused on using a mathematical model to determine the waiting time of two selected b.nks as well as compare the average waiting time b.tween the b.nks. The study uncovered the extent of usage of queuing models in achieving customer satisfaction as well as permitting to make b.tter decisions relating to potential waiting times for customers. The study adopted a case study and ob.ervational research with the source of data b.ing primary. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the two b.nks under study with the target population comprising of all the customers who intended to transact b.sinesses with the b.nks within the period of 11 am to 12 pm. The sample sizes for the first, second and third day of the first b.nk are twenty-eight (28), seventeen (17) and twenty (20) respectively with three servers on each day whereas that for the first, second and third day of the second b.nk is twenty (20), nine (9) and seventeen (17) with two servers on each day. A multiple server (M/M/s) Model was adopted, and Tora Software was the statistical tool used for the analysis. Findings of the study revealed that the second b.nk had a higher utilization factor than the first b.nk. Also, the numb.r of customers in the b.nking hall of the second b.nk was higher than that of the first b.nk during the entire period of ob.ervation. Finally, it takes customers of the first b.nk lesser minutes to complete their transaction than the second b.nk. In conclusion, the three days ob.ervations revealed different b.nking situations faced b. customers in b.th b.nks which had effect on waiting time of customer service. The waiting time of customer service has effect on the numb.r of customers in the queue and system, the prob.b.lity associated with the emptiness of the system and the utilization factor. b.sed on the results, the study recommended, inter

Hydrochemical and Isotopic Characterisation of Groundwaters in the Eastern Region of Ghana

Major ions and stab.e isotopes of groundwater in the Cape Coast granitoid complex (G1) and Lower b.rimian (Lb. formations in the Eastern Region of Ghana were evaluated to estab.ish the source of recharge to the groundwater system. Five major hydrochemical facies were identified in the various rocks in the study area. They are calcium-magnesium-b.carb.nate, sodium b.carb.nate, sodium chloride and calcium chloride waters and mixed or non dominant water type. Sodium chloride and calcium chloride waters dominate aqui-fers of the Cape Coast granitoid complex whereas calcium-magnesium-b.carb.nate is the dominant hydro-chemical facies in the Lower b.rimian aquifers. The most prob.b.e geochemical process responsib.e for the evolution of these hydrochemical facies is dissolution of minerals in the various rock types. Stab.e isotope composition of the groundwaters estab.ished that the recharge to the groundwater system is derived from rainfall.

Elevated expression of heat shock protein 90 （HSP90） has b.en found in kidneys and serum of systemic lupus erythematosus （SLE） patients and MRLIMp-FasIprIFasJpr（MRLIIpr） autoimmune mice. We investigated if inhib.tion of HSP90 would reduce disease in MRL/ Ipr mice. In vitro, pretreatment of mesangial cells with HSP90 inhib.tor Geldanamycin prior to immune-stimulation showed reduced expression of IL-6, IL-12 and NO. In vivo, we found HSP90 expression was elevated in MRL/Ipr kidneys when compared to C57b./6 mice and MRIJIpr mice treated with HSP90 inhib.tor 17-DMAG. MRIJIpr mice treated with 17-DMAG showed decreased proteinuria and reduced serum anti-dsDNA antib.dy production. Glomerulonephritis and glomerular IgG and C3 were not significantly affected b. administration of 17-DMAG in MRIJIpr. 17-DMAG increased CD8＋ T cells, reduced doub.e-negative T cells, decreased the CD4/CD8 ratio and reduced follicular b.cells. These studies suggest that HSP90 may play a role in regulating T-cell differentiation and activation and that HSP90 inhib.tion may reduce inflammation in lupus.

Accumulation of Mineral Nutrients and Phytochemicals in Lettuce and Tomato Grown in High Tunnel and Open Field

High tunnel production of horticultural food crops is b.coming increasingly popular and has a significant impact on their growth, productivity and nutritional quality. The present study examines the effect of high tunnel production of lettuce (Lactuca sativa cv. “Two Star” and “New Red Fire”) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. “Celeb.ity” and “Mountain Fresh”) on their nutritional quality relating to major nutrients and health-promoting phytochemicals. High tunnel environment increased the concentration of N (protein) in b.th lettuce and tomato relative to the open field cultivation. The accumulation pattern of mineral nutrients in high tunnel was similar in green-leaf and red-leaf lettuce varieties. Lettuce varieties grown in high tunnel had higher accumulation of C, S and Zn relative to those grown in open field. However, high tunnel environment suppressed the accumulation of many micronutrients such as Mg, Fe, Cu and Mn in b.th lettuce varieties b.t not in tomato. For example, accumulation of Fe was reduced b. more than 80% in “Two Star” and b. more than 55% in “New Red Fire” under high tunnel. It also suppressed the levels of many health-promoting phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid, chicoric acid, rutin and kaempferol in green-leaf lettuce and gallic acid in red-leaf lettuce. High tunnel environment improved the soil nutrient status b.t reduced the radiation levels (PAR, UV-A and UV-b. received b. the crops. The results show that the high tunnel production has a significant impact on the nutritional quality relating to protein and mineral nutrients in b.th crops and health-promoting phytochemicals in lettuce.
