Distinct edaphic habitats are occupied by discrete legume assemblages with unique indicator species in the Cape Peninsula of South Africa

Aims the Cape Peninsula is a small area(471 km2)situated on the south-westernmost tip of the Core Cape Subregion(CCR)of South *** the Cape Peninsula,Fabaceae are the third most species-rich plant family(162 species)and they have the second highest number of endemic species after the ***,legumes are not the dominant taxa in the *** tend to show patchy distributions within the landscape and different species assemblages usually occupy particular niches at any given *** present study undertook to establish if edaphic factors influence legume species distribution in the Cape Peninsula and to determine the key indicator species for the different *** Soils from 27 legume sites,spanning all major geological substrates of the Cape Peninsula,were analysed for 31 chemical and physi-cal *** species present at each site were recorded and a presence/absence matrix was *** analysis and discriminant function analysis(DFA)were run to group the sites based on overall similarity in edaphic characteristics and to identify the soil parameters contributing towards discriminating the *** correspondence analysis(CCA)was used to test for a cor-relation between legume species compositions and edaphic *** strength of the association between legume species and site groupings based on edaphic properties was assessed using indicator species *** findings based on similarity in overall soil characteristics,the sites formed three clusters:one comprising sites of sandstone geology,one with dune sand sites and the third cluster comprising sites of both shale and granite geologies(hereafter referred to as soil types).the DFA confirmed the distinctness of these clusters and the CCA showed a significant correlation between legume species composition and edaphic *** key edaphic parameters were clay content,iron(Fe),potassium(K),sulphur(S)and zinc(Zn).these findings reveal

Aims In the Core Cape Subregion(CCR),a mediterranean-climate ecosystem with infertile soils,the legume species Podalyria calyptrata and *** are in a separate clade to *** and *** closely related species are allopatric,and with the west-east climate gradient and variation in soil nutrient availability in the CCR,it was hypothesized that the two closely related allopatric species would differ in their ecological niche and root:shoot ratio,specific root length(SRL)and organic acid exudation responses to phosphorus(P)*** With increasing P supply in the glasshouse,we measured plant biomass,leaf nitrogen([N]),[P],root morphology and release of organic *** determined species soil and leaf[N]and[P]and climate in field *** FindingsAt low P supply,*** roots exuded more organic acids than *** which instead produced roots with a greater SRL,and *** allocated more biomass to roots than *** the field,leaf[P]and climate suggested that *** occupied the most oligotrophic niche followed by *** and then *** and *** related allopatric species differed in their mechanisms for P-acquisition and ecological niche,indicating that the environment overrides phylogeny in determining P-acquisition traits for these species,and suggesting that climate regulates nutrient availability,driving distribution and speciation.

The Impact of COVID-19 and FAIR Data Innovation on Distance Education in Africa

Prior to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, distance education, a mode of education that allows teaching and learning to occur beyond the walls of traditional classrooms using electronic media and online delivery practices, was not widely embraced as a credible alternative mode of delivering education, especially in Africa. In education, the pandemic, and the measures to contain it, created a need for virtual learning/teaching and showcased the potential of distance education. This article explores the potential of distance education with an emphasis on the role played by COVID-19, the technologies employed, and the benefits, as well as how data stewardship can enhance distance education. It also describes how distance education can make learning opportunities available to the less privileged, geographically displaced, dropouts, housewives, and even workers, enabling them to partake in education while being engaged in other productive aspects of life. A case study is provided on the Dutch Organisation for Internationalisation in Education(NUFFIC) Digital Innovation Skills Hub(DISH) project, which is implemented via distance education and targeted towards marginalised individuals such as refugees and displaced persons in Ethiopia,Somalia, and other conflict zones, aiming to provide them with critical and soft skills for remote work for financial remuneration. This case study shows that distance education is the way forward in education today, as it has the capability to reach millions of learners simultaneously, educating, lifting people out of poverty, and increasing productivity and yields, while ensuring that the world is a better place for future generations.

Rapid and effective data sharing is necessary to control disease outbreaks,such as the current coronavirus *** the existence of data sharing agreements,data silos,lack of interoperable data infrastructures,and different institutional jurisdictions hinder data sharing and *** overcome these challenges,the Virus Outbreak Data Network(VODAN)-Africa initiative is championing an approach in which data never leaves the institution where it was generated,but,instead,algorithms can visit the data and query multiple datasets in an automated *** make this possible,FAIR Data Points—distributed data repositories that host machine-actionable data and metadata that adhere to the FAIR Guidelines(that data should be Findable,Accessible,Interoperable and Reusable)—have been deployed in participating institutions using a dockerised bundle of tools called VODAN in a box(Vi b).Vi b is a set of multiple FAIR-enabling and open-source services with a single goal:to support the gathering of World Health Organization(WHO)electronic case report forms(e CRFs)as FAIR data in a machine-actionable way,but without exposing or transferring the data outside the *** the execution of a proof of concept,Vi b was deployed in Uganda and Leiden *** proof of concept generated a first query which was implemented across two continents.A SWOT(strengths,weaknesses,opportunities and threats)analysis of the architecture was carried out and established the changes needed for specifications and requirements for the future development of the solution.

Combined Effect of a Catalytic Reduction Device with Waste Frying Oil-based biodiesel on NOx Emissions of Diesel Engines

Internal combustion engines with application in automobiles and other relevant industries constitute significant environmental pollution via the release of toxic exhaust gasses like carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), particulate matter (Pm), and nitrogen oxide (NOb>xb>). Engine researchers and manufacturers are challenged to develop external and internal measures to ensure environmentally friendly solutions to accommodate and conform to the growing list of emission standards. Therefore, this work presents an experimental investigation of the NOb>xb> emission profile of a diesel engine that is fuelled and fitted with waste frying oil-based biodiesel and catalytic converter. Using a single-cylinder, four-stroke air-cooled CI engine at a constant speed of 1900 rpm and different loadings of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%;fitted with a catalytic converter at the exhaust outlet of the engine and linked to a dynamometer and a gas analyser, an experiment was conducted at biodiesel/diesel volume blends of b0 (0/10), b5 (5/95), b20 (20/80), b30 (30/70), b70 (70/30), b100 (100/0);and 30% concentration (v/v), 0.5 litre/hr flow rate of aqueous urea from the catalytic converter. The results show an increasing NOb>xb> emission as the biodiesel component increased in the blend. The catalytic converter showed a downward NOb>xb> reduction with a significant 68% reduction in efficiency at high exhaust gas temperatures. It is concluded that the combined utilisation of waste frying oil-based biodiesel and the catalytic converter yields substantial NOb>xb> emission reduction.

The phenolics composition and inhibitory activity of Tetrapleura tetraptera fruit extract on xanthine oxidase(XO)and Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation in the kidney,liver and lungs tissues of rats were evaluated in ***(flavonoids and phenolic acids)were quantified using reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatrography coupled with diode array detection(HPLC-DAD).The XO and Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation inhibitory abilities of the extract were evaluated using spectrophotometric *** extract contained some flavonoids and phenolic acids,including catechin,epicatechin,rutin,quercetin,luteolin,apigenin;gallic,chlorogenic,caffeic and ellagic acids that are beneficial to *** extract inhibited XO in the kidney,liver and lungs tissues in a dose-dependent *** half-maximal inhibitory concentrations(IC50)of the extract on XO from the tissues varied significantly(Pkidney>*** extract also inhibited Fe2+-induced lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent pattern,having IC50 in the order of liver>lungs>*** fruit extract could be a promising nutraceutical for preventing and managing hyperuricaemia and the associated disease conditions,due to its ability to inhibit XO;this bioactivity is attributable to combined effect of its flavonoids and phenolic acids.

The incompleteness of patient health data is a threat to the management of COVID-19 in Africa and *** has become particularly clear with the recent emergence of new variants of *** Virus Outbreak Data Network(VODAN)-Africa has studied the curation of patient health data in selected African countries and identified that health information flows often do not involve the use of health data at the point of care,which renders data production largely meaningless to those producing *** modus operandi leads to disfranchisement over the control of health data,which is extracted to be processed *** response to this problem,VODAN-Africa studied whether or not a design that makes local ownership and repositing of data central to the data curation process,would have a greater chance of being *** design team based their work on the legal requirements of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR);the FAIR Guidelines on curating data as Findable,Accessible(under well-defined conditions),Interoperable and Reusable(FAIR);and national regulations applying in the context where the data is *** study concluded that the visiting of data curated as machine actionable and reposited in the locale where the data is produced and renders services has great potential for access to a wider variety of data.A condition of such innovation is that the innovation team is intradisciplinary,involving stakeholders and experts from all of the places where the innovation is designed,and employs a methodology of co-creation and capacity-building.

The Influence of benzophenone Substitution on the Physico-Chemical Characterizations of 8-HydroxyQuinoline NLO Single Crystals

Single crystals of 8-Hydroxyquinoline(8-HQ) and benzophenone substituted 8-HydroxyQuinoline(b8-HQ) are grown by slow evaporation of acetone at room temperature. Coloured crystals of 8-HQ and b8-HQ with good optical quality of dimensions 54 × 3 × 1.5 mm3 and 27 × 3 × 1 mm3 are harvested. Single crystal X-ray diffractometer was utilized to measure the unit cell parameters and to confirm the crystal structure. The presence of various functional groups in the molecule was ascertained by FTIR spectral analysis. The cut-offwavelength of 8-HQ andb8-HQwas centered at 350 and 356 nm. The functional groups in the molecule are elucidated by 1H and 13C-NmR spectral analyses. Kurtz Perry test confirms the SHG in8-HQ andb8-HQ single crystals.

Synthesis and Characterization of Pure and Ag-TiOb>2b>-modified Diatomaceous Aluminosilicate Ceramic membranes for Water Remediation

mesoporous ceramic membranes were prepared from raw and modified diatomaceous earth alumi-nosilicate mineral precursors. The main modification component of the ceramic membranes was Ag-loaded TiOb>2b> nanoparticles (STOX). Chemical and microstructural characterizations of the raw materials and the modified precursors were carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE-IbA), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) and Scanning Electron microscopy (SEm). The precursors and membranes were prepared and subsequently subjected to a high temperature sintering treatment for physico-chemical modification and stability. Remediation functionalities of the ceramic membranes on water samples were studied using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS), Total bacterial Count Enumeration;Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, and Electroconductivity (EC). Remediation experiments showed reductions in the concentration of certain cations such as mg2+, mn2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and K+ by the modified ceramic membrane samples, while increased concentrations were observed for Ca2+, Na+ and mg2+. The antimicrobial microfiltration process showed 100% bacterial removal and 70% fungi removal in most of the samples. membranes exhibited good flux output from 5.607 L/hr·m2 (STOX-Z) to 39.245 L/hr·m2 (ZEO-T) under a pressure of 0.0196 mPa.
