Electrocatalytic production of glycolic acid via oxalic acid reduction on titania debris supported on a TiO_(2)nanotube array

Electrodes prepared by anodic oxidation of Ti foils are robust and not toxic materials for the electrocatalytic reduction of oxalic acid to glycolic acid, allowing the development of a renewable energy-driven process for producing an alcoholic compound from an organic acid at low potential and room temperature. Coupled with the electrochemical synthesis of the oxalic acid from CO_(2),this process represents a new green and low-carbon path to produce added value chemicals from CO_(2). Various electrodes prepared by anodic oxidation of Ti foils were investigated. They were characterized by the presence of a TiO_(2) nanotube array together with the presence of small patches, debris, or TiO_(2) nanoparticles. The concentration of oxygen vacancies, the amount of Ti^(3+) measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and the intensity of the anodic peak measured by cyclic voltammetry, were positively correlated with the achieved oxalic acid conversion and glycolic acid yield. The analysis of the results indicates the presence of small amorphous TiO_(2) nanoparticles(or surface patches or debris) interacting with TiO_(2) nanotubes, the sites responsible for the conversion of oxalic acid and glycolic acid yield. By varying this structural characteristic of the electrodes, it is possible to tune the glycolic acid to glyoxylic acid relative ratio. A best cumulative Faradaic efficiency(FE) of about 84% with FE to glycolic acid around 60% and oxalic conversion about 30% was observed.

Role of urocortin in pregnancy: An update and future perspectives

The activities of corticotropin-releasing factor(CRF) and related peptides are mediated a number of receptors with seven transmembrane domains that are coupled to the Gs and Gq proteins. These receptors are known as CRF-Rs. In vitro studies have evidenced that urocortin(UCN) and CRF provoke an increase in the contractility of the uterus which is induced by endometrial prostaglandin F2 a. Furthermore, through trophoblasts, it stimulates the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH) and prostaglandin PGE2 and has a vasodilatory effect on the placenta. While it is well known that the placenta produces considerable quantities of CRF, several studies have, however, excluded that the placenta can generate significant quantities of UCN. In the short term, the human fetal adrenal gland produces more cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. The gestational tissues express UCN3 and UCN2 m RNA in cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast cells, while UCN2 is only to be found in the maternal and fetal vessels and amniotic cells. Nevertheless, gestational tissues express UCN2 and UCN3 differentially and do not stimulate placental ACTH secretion. In term pregnancies, maternal plasma levels of CRF and UCN are lower than at the beginning of pregnancy and are correlated to labor onset. Conversely,they do not decrease in post-term pregnancies. This evidence would seem to indicate that the fine-regulated expression of these neuropeptides is important in determining the duration of human gestation. In this scenario, low concentrations of UCN in the amniotic fluid at mid-term may be considered a sign of predisposition to preterm birth.

Hepatocellular adenoma: An unsolved diagnostic enigma

Hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) is a rare benign liver tumour associated with the use of oral contraceptives or other steroid medications which occurs predominantly in young and middle-aged women. Unlike other benign liver tumours, an HCA may be complicated by bleeding and malignant transformation. HCAs have been divided into four subtypes based on molecular and pathological features: hepatocyte nuclear factor 1α-mutated HCA, inflammatory HCA,β-catenin-mutated HCA, and unclassified HCA.β-cateninmutated HCA has the highest risk of haemorrhage or malignant transformation. In the latest upgrade of the guidelines regarding the management of benign liver tumours published in 2016 by the European Association for the Study of the Liver, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was recognized to be superior to all other imaging modalities in detecting HCAs and in being able to subtype HCAs up to 80%, with positive identification of 1α-mutated HCA or inflammatory HCA achievable with > 90% specificity. This review analyzed the imaging features of HCA using MRI with hepato-specific contrast agents, focusing on the limitations in the HCA characterization.

PEG-PLGA electrospun nanofibrous membranes loaded with Au@Fe2O3 nanoparticles for drug delivery applications

A PEGylated-PLGA random nanofibrous membrane loaded with gold and iron oxide nanoparticles and with silibinin was prepared by electrospinning deposition. The nanofibrous membrane can be remotely controlled and activated by a laser light or magnetic field to release biological agents on demand. The nanosystems were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses. The drug loading efficiency and drug content percentages were determined by UV-vis optical absorption spectroscopy. The nanofibrous membrane irradiated by a relatively low-intensity laser or stimulated by a magnetic field showed sustained silibinin release for at least 60 h, without the burst effect. The proposed low-cost electrospinning procedure is capable of assembling, via a one-step procedure, a stimuli-responsive drug-loaded nanosystem with metallic nanoparticles to be externally activated for controlled drug delivery.

ANFIS-based Sensor Fusion System of Sit-to-stand for Elderly People Assistive Device Protocols

This paper describes the analysis and design of an assistive device for elderly people under development at the EgyptJapan University of Science and Technology（E-JUST） named E-JUST assistive device（EJAD）.Several experiments were carried out using a motion capture system（VICON） and inertial sensors to identify the human posture during the sit-to-stand *** EJAD uses only two inertial measurement units（IMUs） fused through an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems（ANFIS） algorithm to imitate the real motion of the *** EJAD consists of two main parts,a robot arm and an active *** robot arm is a 2-degree-of-freedom（2-DOF） planar *** addition,a back support with a passive joint is used to support the patient s *** IMUs on the leg and trunk of the patient are used to compensate for and adapt to the EJAD system motion depending on the obtained patient *** ANFIS algorithm is used to train the fuzzy system that converts the IMUs signals to the right posture of the patient.A control scheme is proposed to control the system motion based on practical measurements taken from the experiments.A computer simulation showed a relatively good performance of the EJAD in assisting the patient.

Single-phase Y_(4)Al_(2)O_(9)(YAM)powders were synthesized via solid-state reaction starting from nano-sized Al_(2)O_(3) and Y_(2)O_(3).Fully dense(99.5%)bulk YAM ceramics were consolidated by spark plasma sintering(SPS)at 1800℃.We demonstrated the excellent damage tolerance and good machinability of YAM *** properties are attributed to the easy slipping along the weakly bonded crystallographic planes,resulting in multiple energy dissipation mechanisms such as transgranular fracture,shear slipping and localized grain crushing.

The ternary or quaternary layered compounds called MAB phases are frequently mentioned recently together with the well-known MAX ***,MAB phases are generally referred to layered transition metal borides,while MAX phases are layered transition metal carbides and nitrides with different types of crystal structure although they share the common nano-laminated structure *** order to prove that MAB phases can share the same type of crystal structure with MAX phases and extend the composition window of MAX phases from carbides and nitrides to borides,two new MAB phase compounds Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)SeB with the Cr_(2)AlC-type MAX phase(211 phase)crystal structure were discovered by a combination of first-principles calculations and experimental verification in this ***-principles calculations predicted the stability and lattice parameters of the two new MAB phase compounds Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)*** they were successfully synthesized by using a thermal explosion method in a spark plasma sintering(SPS)*** crystal structures of Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)SeB were determined by a combination of the X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM).The lattice parameters of Zr_(2)SeB and Hf_(2)SeB are a=3.64398Å,c=12.63223Åand a=3.52280Å,c=12.47804Å,*** the atomic positions are M at 4f(1/3,2/3,0.60288[Zr]or 0.59889[Hf]),Se at 2c(1/3,2/3,1/4),and B at 2a(0,0,0).And the atomic stacking sequences follow those of the Cr_(2)AlC-type MAX *** work opens up the composition window for the MAB phases and MAX phases and will trigger the interests of material scientists and physicists to explore new compounds and properties in this new family of materials.

Reactivation of hepatitis B virus infection in patients with hemolymphoproliferative diseases, and its prevention

Reactivation of hepatitis B virus(HBV)replication is characterized by increased HBV-DNA serum values of about 1 log or by HBV DNA turning positive if previously undetectable in serum,possibly associated with liver damage and seldom *** to HBV reactivation,hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg)-negative/anti-HBc-positive subjects may revert to *** patients with hemo-lymphoproliferative disease,the frequency of HBV reactivation depends on the type of lymphoproliferative disorder,the individual's HBV serological status and the potency and duration of *** particular,it occurs in 10%-50%of the HBsAg-positive and in 2%-25%of the HBsAg-negative/anti-HBc-positive,the highest incidences being registered in patients receiving rituximab-based *** reactivation can be prevented by accurate screening of patients at risk and by a pharmacological prophylaxis with anti-HBV nucleo(t)sides starting 2-3 wk before the beginning of immunosuppressive treatment and covering the entire period of administration of immunosuppressive drugs and a long subsequent period,the duration of which depends substantially on the degree of immunodepression *** with significant HBV replication before immunosuppressive therapy should receive anti-HBV nucleo(t)sides as a long-term(may be life-long)*** review article is mainly directed to doctors engaged every day in the treatment of patients with onco-lymphoproliferative diseases,so that they can broaden their knowledge on HBV infection and on its reactivation induced by the drugs with high immunosuppressive potential that they use in the care of their patients.

Fiscal Residuum and Localization of Foreign Direct Investments among Chinese Provinces

This paper examines the impact of fiscal residuum--the excess of expenditure benefits over tax burdens--on the location choice of foreign direct investments among China＇s provinces. Using data provided by the National Bureau of Statistics of China we propose two fiscal residuum indexes for China＇s provinces over the period 1998-2004. According to Buchanan＇s original definition of fiscal residuum a first index is given by the difference between government expenditure and revenue. A second index measures enterprises＇ net fiscal benefit and is calculated as the difference between public expenditure that affect business activities and taxes paid by enterprises. We found that the first index does not significantly affect the FDI localization choice while the second one positively affects it. When looking at different subsets of provinces we found that for eastern provinces the first index has a positive and significant effect. These results confirm the role of the net fiscal benefit as a determinant of FDI inflows at the provincial level.
