Changes in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma after deep sclerectomy

AIm： To assess changes in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer （RNFL） thickness and visual field （VF） in patients with glaucoma after reduction of intraocular pressure （IOP）. mETHODS： Thirty-five consecutive patients with bilat-eral high tension glaucoma were included in the study. Thirty-five eyes underwent monocular deep sclerectomy （surgery group） and the medically treated fellow eyes served as controls （control group）. Quantitative analyses of the peripapillary RNFL thickness by optical coherence tomography （OCT） and global VF indices by automated perimetry were performed before surgery and six months after surgery in both eyes. The changes in RNFL thickness overall and by quadrant were evalu-ated and studied with respect to age, best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA）, preoperative global VF indices, postoperative IOP changes, and postoperative changes in global VF indices. Changes observed in RNFL thickness and VF indices were compared between eyes after surgery and fellow eyes. RESULTS： Six months after surgery, the overall IOP decreased from a baseline mean of 24.5 ± 3.2 mmHg to 11.5 ± 2.7 mmHg （P 〈 0.001） at the time of OCT testing. A signifcant increase in the overall mean RNFL thickness was observed after surgery （P 〈 0.001）. The preoperative VF mean deviation was significantly cor-related with a postoperative increase in the RNFL thick-ness （P 〈 0.075）. No correlation was found between RNFL thickness changes and age, BCVA, or changes in the global VF indices. There was no significant difference between eyes with an IOP reduction of more than 50% and those with a reduction in IOP less than 30% （ P = 0.312）.CONCLUSION： A signifcant increase in the peripapil-lary RNFL thickness was associated with IOP reduction by glaucoma filtration surgery as measured by OCT.

The Differential Quadrature Solution of Reaction-Diffusion Equation Using Explicit and Implicit Numerical Schemes

In this paper, two different numerical schemes, namely the Runge-Kutta fourth order method and the implicit Euler method with perturbation method of the second degree, are applied to solve the nonlinear thermal wave in one and two dimensions using the differential quadrature method. The aim of this paper is to make comparison between previous numerical schemes and detect which is more efficient and more accurate by comparing the obtained results with the available analytical ones and computing the computational time.

Contribution to the Ground Water Hydrology of the Quaternary Aquifer in West Ismailia Area, Egypt

Hydrologic conditions of the ground water of the Quaternary aquifer in west Ismailia area, Egypt, were characterized based on new hydrologic data collected in 2017. The Quaternary aquifer consists of alluvial deposits. The grain size distribution results indicate that the major part of the aquifer deposits is formed of medium to coarse grained sand with medium uniformity coefficients ranging between 2.5 and 10. They also reflect the heterogeneity, anisotropy and high productivity of the aquifer. The estimated aquifer parameters range from 29% to 41% for total porosity, from 18.71 m/day to 63.95 m/day for horizontal hydraulic conductivity, from 8.94 m/day to 61.6 m/day for vertical hydraulic conductivity, from 1.01 to 4.27 for anisotropy and from 1870 m2/day to 6549 m2/day for transmissivity. The ground water flows mainly from the north and northeast recharge sources (Ismailia and El manaief canals) and from the south recharge area (miocene aquifer), with an average hydraulic gradient of 0.00438. The recharge rate to the aquifer (from the southern area) and the Darcy’s velocity of ground water are estimated to be 447 × 106 m3/year and 0.203 m/day (on average), respectively. A great change in the hydrologic setting of the aquifer is occurred during the period of 1992-2017, where the groundwater flow has changed during that period. The aquifer contains fresh to saline water. An oxidizing (alkaline) environment is reported for the aquifer, as revealed from the relationship between the redox potential (185 - 836 mV) and pH (5.2 - 7.5 standard units). This indicated the capability of ground water to dissolve heavy metals associated to rock-forming minerals. A wide variation in the concentrations of total dissolved solids (320 - 7385 mg/l) and dissolved oxygen (2.13 - 8.4 mg/l) in the Quaternary aquifer is observed, reflecting the local variation of the environmental and geologic conditions and indicating the influence of different recharge sources.

An eco-friendly,new,and controllable approach for the preparation of manganese oxide(a-mnO_(2))nanorods has been introduced using hydrothermal reaction for supercapacitor *** in-depth crystal structure analysis ofα-mnO_(2) is analyzed by X-ray Rietveld refinement by using Full Prof program with the help of pseudo-Voigt profile *** developed a-mnO_(2) electrode attains a remarkable capacitance of 577.7 F/g recorded at a current density value of 1 A/g with an excellent cycle life when is used for 10,000 repeated cycles due to the porous nanorod-morphology assisting the ease penetration of electrolyte ions into the electroactive *** diffusive and capacitive contributions of the electrode have been estimated by considering standard numerical packages in *** successfully assembling the aqueous symmetric supercapacitor(SSC)cell by utilizing the as-preparedα-mnO_(2),an excellent capacitance of 163.5 F/g and energy density of 58.1 Wh/kg at the constant current density of 0.5 A/g are obtained with an expanded potential frame of 1.6 ***,the cell has exceptionally withstood up to 10,000 cycles with an ultimate capacitance retention of 94.1%including the ability to light an LED for 18 *** findings recommend the developed a-mnO_(2) electrode to be a highly felicitous electrode for the field of energy storage.

Experimental Investigation of Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymers

The potential usage of virgin Low density polyethelyne (LDPE) reinforced with different concentrations (2%, 5% and 6% by weight) of treated rice straw with different lengths (2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm) is investigated to produce high value products that have technical and environmental demand. The two treatment methods used for rice straw are alkali and acidic treatments of rice straw. The removal of impurities and waxy substances from fiber surface avoid creation of rougher topography after treatment and improves the quality of fiber, also content of hemi cellulose and lignin decrease so increase effectiveness of fiber due to dispersing of fiber in matrix. The reinforcing material is embedded in the matrix material to enhance tensile and flexural behaviors of the synthesized composite. The result of investigating these two mechanical properties, using statistical analysis & design of experiments, showed an enhancement in the mechaniccal properties of the virgin polymer composite compared to the virgin polymer. The flexural stress of the composite increased three times the virgin flexural stress, while the tensile stress increased eight times the original tensile stress.

An Efficient method to Solve Thermal Wave Equation

In this paper, an efficient technique of differential quadrature method and perturbation method is employed to analyze reaction-diffusion problems. An efficient method is presented to solve thermal wave propagation model in one and two dimensions. The proposed method marches in the time direction block by block and there are several time levels in each block. The global method of differential quadrature is applied in each block to discretize both the spatial and temporal derivatives. Furthermore, the proposed method is validated by comparing the obtained results with the available analytical ones and also compared with the hybrid technique of differential quadrature method and Runge-Kutta fourth order method.

Double J Fixation after Craniotomy: Technical Description of a modification method for Bone Flap Fixation (Hiederov method)

Background: Fixation of bone flap following craniotomy is usually achieved by synthetic materials. In rural and poor funding areas, innovation for cheap, safe and applicable material is needed. Purpose: The aim is to assess our new innovative technique in bone flap fixation against traditional techniques. Patients and methods: The study was a prospective randomized controlled study enrolled at Al-Amal Hospital and Al-Ahly Bank Hospital from 2014-2019. Forty-eight patients were randomized in the study. Group A (24 patients) underwent titanium miniplate fixation while group B (24 patients) underwent our new technique. The new technique is double J tunnels performed by craniotome on either side of the bone (flap and skull sides), then a Prolene suture is passed through the shared stem of J’ holes and secured in the wrapped side of J’s holes and tying it tightly. Both techniques were examined against fixation time, rigidity, offset and final judgment postoperatively. Result: There was no statistically significant difference in using both techniques as regard fixation time. Our new technique was not inferior to the traditional one in achieving rigidity (p > 0.05). The final postoperative assessment was as equal as that seen in miniplate fixation. Conclusion: This technique is a simple, easy, cheap and effective method of fixing craniotomy bone flap.

Detection of <i>Chlamydia trachomatis</i>and <i>Neisseria gonorrhoeae</i>in Egyptian Women Suffering from Infertility

Chlamydial and gonococcal infections are recognized as two of the major causes of sexually transmissible human bacterial infection which may lead to infertility. In this cross sectional study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis among Egyptian women using different microbiological methods. One hundred and fifty cervical swabs were collected, of which 100 were from infertile women. Culture and ELISA technique were used for screening of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis individually. In addition, PCR was used for all examined samples. For C. trachomatis, 3 cases were positive for antigen detection by ELISA. moreover, in obtained results of PCR, DNA was detected in 4 samples, and three of them from infertile group. So based on PCR results, the sensitivity and specificity of ELISA were 75% and 100% respectively. Furthermore, 3 samples were positive for gonococcal infections by PCR, and two of them were taken from infertile women. Positive results of two samples were verified by culture. The estimated sensitivity and specificity of culture method were 66.7% and 100% respectively. Results of this study indicate that PCR is a valuable method for detection of gonococcal and chlamydial infection and it is suitable for the confirmation of ELISA results for C. trachomatis diagnosis. Culture method is less sensitive than PCR for detection of N. gonorrhoeae. The prevalence of such infections is higher among infertile women.

Sustainable Bio-Conversion of Rice Straw Waste into High Quality Organic Fertilizer

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different additives including biochar, effective micro-organisms (Em), animal manure and commercial microbial inoculants on the bioconversion of rice straw. Different compost piles were constructed, and each contained 50 kg of rice straw and mixture of natural rocks to enrich the compost nutritional value. The physical, chemical and biological parameters indicating the decomposition of organic material, maturation and quality of the organic fertilizer product were investigated during the composting process. A rapid increase in compost temperature was obtained in inoculated piles. All piles reached maturation after around 42 days. All analysis of the properties of the final compost products indicated that it was in the range of the matured level and can be used as organic fertilizer without limitation. The highest decomposition rate and highest organic fertilizer quality were obtained in the pile inoculated with Em and 10% biochar compared to other treatments.

Chemometric Evaluation of the Heavy metals in Urban Soil of Fallujah City, Iraq

To evaluate the concentrations of heavy metals and identification of their sources, 20 composite soil samples were collected randomly in Fallujah city, Iraq. To assess the pollution level, we used the soil metal index (SmI) and enrichment factor. We investigated the sources of heavy metal using the chemometric techniques such as correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). The concentrations of Pb and Co have a normal distribution in soil of the study area. Zn and Cd have an approximately normal distribution, and Ni, Cu, and Cr have a non-normal distribution. Our results revealed that the urban soils in Fallujah city were unpolluted by heavy metals and showed a significant to extremely high enrichments of heavy metals controlled by anthropogenic activities. The moderate to strong positive correlations among Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn suggest that these metals have common sources. The chemometric techniques identify that the source of Cu, Co and Pb is controlled by lithogenic origin and that the source of Cr, Ni and Cd is controlled by mixed sources (lithogenic and anthropogenic).
