Cue hierarchy in the foraging behaviour of the brackish cladoceran Daphniopsis australis

Zooplankton communities are an essential component of marine and freshwater food webs. However, there is still a relative lack of information on how these organisms behaviourally respond to a range of abiotic and biotic stressors. Specifically, the behaviour of the cladoceran D aphniopsis australis, a species endemic to South-eastern Australian saline lakes and ponds, is still unknown despite its potential role in the structure and function of inland water ecosystems. The swimming behaviour of males, parthenogenetic females and epiphial females was investigated under various conditions and combinations of food and conspecific cues. In the absence of cues, males displayed the most extensive swimming behaviour, exploring all areas of the container, and swimming in a series of relatively straight trajectories. In contrast, females typically exhibited a hop-and-sink motion characterised by the alternation between short bursts of swimming and sinking phases. Both females spent long periods near the bottom of the container, but epiphial females appeared to be more active than parthenogenetic ones that rarely made an excursion in the water column. In the presence of cues, males and females showed abilities to detect infochemicals from food and conspecifics, but exhibited specific behavioural strategies. Males essentially increased their swimming speed in the presence of food and/or conspecific infochemicals, and this increase was independent on the source of the cues, i.e. food, conspecific or a mixture of food and conspecifics. In contrast, females exhibited cue hierarchies that were related to their sexual status. Parthenogenetic females swam faster in the presence of food and a mixture of food and conspecific infochemicals than in the presence of cue from the opposite sex, which did not significantly differ from control observations conducted in the absence of cues. Additional risk in extreme precipitation in China from 1.5℃to 2.0℃global warming levels

To avoid dangerous climate change impact, the Paris Agreement sets out two ambitious goals: to limit the global warming to be well below 2 ℃ and to pursue effort for the global warming to be below 1.5 ℃ above the pre-industrial level. As climate change risks may be region-dependent, changes in magnitude and probability of extreme precipitation over China are investigated under those two global warming levels based on simulations from the Coupled Model Inter-Comparison Projects Phase 5. The focus is on the added changes due to the additional half a degree warming from 1.5 ℃ to 2 ℃ . Results show that regional average changes in the magnitude do not depend on the return periods with a relative increase around 7% and 11% at the 1.5 ℃ and 2 ℃ global warming levels, respectively. The additional half a degree global warming adds an additional increase in the magnitude by nearly 4%. The regional average changes in term of occurrence probabilities show dependence on the return periods, with rarer events(longer return periods) having larger increase of risk. for the 100-year historical event, the probability is projected to increase by a factor of 1.6 and 2.4 at the 1.5 ℃ and 2 ℃ global warming levels, *** projected changes in extreme precipitation are independent of the RCP scenarios.

factors affecting trace element content in periurban market garden subsoil in Yunnan Province,China

field investigations were conducted to measure subsoil trace element content and factors influencing content in an intensive periurban market garden in Chenggong County, Yunnan Province, South-West China. The area was divided into three different geomorphological units： specifically, mountain （M）, transition （T） and lacustrine （L）. Mean trace element content in subsoil were determined for Pb （58.2 mg/kg）, Cd （0.89 mg/kg）, Cu （129.2 mg/kg）, and Zn （97.0 mg/kg）. Strong significant relationships between trace element content in topsoil and subsoil were observed. Both Pb and Zn were accumulated in topsoil （RTS （ratio of mean trace element in topsoil to subsoil） of Pb and Zn ≥1.0） and Cd and Cu in subsoil （RTS of Cd and Cu≤1.0）. Subsoil trace element content was related to relief, stoniness, soil color, clay content, and cation exchange capacity. Except for 7.5 YR （yellow-red） color, trace element content increased with color intensity from brown to reddish brown. Significant positive relationships were observed between fe content and that of Pb and Cu. Trace element content in mountain unit subsoil was higher than in transition and lacustrine units （M 〉 T 〉 L）, except for Cu （T 〉 M 〉 L）. Mean trace element content in calcareous subsoil was higher than in sandstone and shale. Mean trace element content in clay texture subsoil was higher than in sandy and sandy loam subsoil, and higher Cu and Zn content in subsoil with few mottles. It is possible to model Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn distribution in subsoil physico-chemical characteristics to help improve agricultural practice.

Role of Anthropogenic Climate Change in Autumn Drought Trend over China from 1961 to 2014

Understanding the impact of anthropogenic climate change on drought is of great significance to the prevention of its adverse *** drought indices,standardized precipitation index(SPI)and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index(SPEI),are used here for the detection and attribution of autumn droughts in China,and for the exploration of the role played by the anthropogenic climate *** is only related to precipitation,but SPEI involves both precipitation and potential *** their trend’s spatial patterns,the historical simulations(including all forcings,noted as ALL)from 11 models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6,as an ensemble,are able to reproduce their observational *** shows wetting trend in the north of 35°N and drying trend in the *** shows drying trend in almost whole *** drying trend in historical simulations ALL is significantly stronger,compared with the counterpart from the accompanying simulations(called NAT)with only natural forcings *** result clearly indicates that anthropogenic climate change plays a dominant role in the enhancement of autumn drought in China.A more rigorous detection work is also performed with the signal’s fingerprint of ALL(and NAT)projected onto the observation and assessed with the background noise from no external-forcing control *** trend pattern signal in ALL is significantly detected in observation for both SPI and SPEI,with a more pronounced signal in SPEI than in SPI,while the signal of NAT is not detected for neither SPI nor ***,extreme droughts(with indices beyond-2)are assessed in terms of probability ratio between ALL and *** is shown that the anthropogenic precipitation change plays a leading role in the south of 35°N,while the anthropogenic temperature change leads in the north.

Acoustic wave resonators are promising candidates for gravimetric ***,they generally suffer from strong acoustic radiation in liquid,which limits their quality factor and increases their frequency *** article presents an acoustic radiation-free gravimetric biosensor based on a locally resonant surface phononic crystal(SPC)consisting of periodic high aspect ratio electrodes to address the above *** acoustic wave generated in the SPC is slower than the sound wave in water,hence it prevents acoustic propagation in the fluid and results in energy confinement near the electrode *** energy confinement results in a significant quality factor improvement and reduces frequency *** proposed SPC resonator is numerically studied by finite element analysis and experimentally implemented by an electroplating-based fabrication *** results show that the SPC resonator exhibits an in-liquid quality factor 15 times higher than a conventional Rayleigh wave resonator at a similar operating *** proposed radiation suppression method using SPC can also be applied in other types of acoustic wave ***,this method can serve as a general technique for boosting the in-liquid quality factor and sensing performance of many acoustic biosensors.

Structure of Channel flows with Surface Mounted Ribs

The flow inside a channel with surface mounted ribs is studied by numerical simulation and experimental flow visualization. Both the geometry with one rib and the geometry with two ribs, placed perpendicular to the flow, are studied, with particular emphasis on the effect of the variation of the distance between the ribs on the structure of the flow. Results show that, for Reynolds number flows of 400 and 1000 (based on the uniform incoming velocity and the height of the ribs), the flow reattaches between the ribs when they are separated by distances of 12h (h being the height of the ribs) and 6h, respectively. In this respect, however, the numerical results for the Reynolds number flow of 1000 are in contradiction with published results.

Background:Immune checkpoint inhibitors play an important role in the treatment of solid tumors, but the currently used immune checkpoint inhibitors targeting programmed cell death-1 (PD-1), programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) show limited clinical efficacy in many breast cancers. B7H3 has been widely reported as an immunosuppressive molecule, but its immunological function in breast cancer patients remains unclear.Methods:We analyzed the expression of B7H3 in breast cancer samples using data from the Cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. MicroRNAs were selected using the TarBase, miRTarBase, and miRBase databases. The regulatory role of the microRNA hsa-miR-214-3p on B7H3 was investigated through dual-luciferase reporter assays, which identified the specific action sites of interaction. The expression levels of B7H3 and hsa-miR-214-3p in human breast cancer tissues and adjacent normal tissues were quantified using Western blotting and quantitative PCR (qPCR). experiments were performed to observe the effects of modulating the expression of B7H3 or hsa-miR-214-3p on breast cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis. Additionally, the regulatory impact of hsa-miR-214-3p on B7H3 was examined. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and flow cytometry were employed to assess the effects of co-cultured breast cancer cells and normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) on immune cells and associated cytokines.Results:In breast cancer tissues, the expression level of B7H3 is inversely correlated with that of hsa-miR-214-3p, as well as with the regulatory effects on breast cancercell behavior. Hsa-miR-214-3p was found to inhibit breast cancer cell growth by downregulating B7H3. Endothelin increases the proliferation of rat olfactory mucosa cells

The olfactory mucosa holds olfactory sensory neurons directly in contact with an aggressive environment. In order to maintain its integrity, it is one of the few neural zones which are continuously renewed during the whole animal life. Among several factors regulating this renewal, endothelin acts as an anti-apoptotic factor in the rat olfactory epithelium. In the present study, we explored whether endothelin could also act as a proliferative factor. Using primary culture of the olfactory mucosa, we found that an early treatment with endothelin increased its growth. Consistently, a treatment with a mixture of BQ123 and BQ788(endothelin receptor antagonists) decreased the primary culture growth without affecting the cellular death level. We then used combined approaches of calcium imaging, reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and protein level measurements to show that endothelin was locally synthetized by the primary culture until it reached confluency. furthermore, in vivo intranasal instillation of endothelin receptor antagonists led to a decrease of olfactory mucosa cell expressing proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA), a marker of proliferation. Only short-term treatment reduced the PCNA level in the olfactory mucosa cells. When the treatment was prolonged, the PCNA level was not statistically affected but the expression level of endothelin was increased. Overall, our results show that endothelin plays a proliferative role in the olfactory mucosa and that its level is dynamically regulated. This study was approved by the Comité d’éthique en expérimentation animale COMETHEA(COMETHEA C2 EA-45;protocol approval #12-058) on November 28, 2012.

The metal-substituted silylenes are of high interest,as the theoretical studies indicated that the silylenes with electropositive substituents have a small ΔE_(S-T)(singlet-triplet energy gap)or even the ground-state ***,such compounds are highly unstable,and only two transient alkali metal-substituted silylenes M(^(t)Bu_(3)Si)Si:(M=Li,K)were generated by photoextrusion of the alkali metal-substituted silacyclopropenes and merely studied by spectroscopic method(EPR)at low temperature(14 to 50 K).Herein,we report the generation of transient zinc-substituted silylenes from zinc silacyclopropanyl complexes under very mild and convenient *** generated transient zinc-substituted silylenes are highly reactive and undergo intermolecular cycloaddition with alkenes for the synthesis of zinc-substituted Si-heterocyclic *** there is no substrate,the zinc-substituted silylenes attack the C-C bonds of the β-diketiminato ligands and break the C-C *** studies further highlight the silylene nature of the zinc-substituted silylene and a very small ΔE_(S-T)(4.4 kcal/mol).
