Is toxoplasmosis a potential risk factor for liver cirrhosis?

Objective:To document Toxoplasma gondii(***) antibody status in patients with liver disease,blood samples were taken from 180 hepatic patients and 180 healthy ***:Toxoplasma IgG antibody was detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and histopathological assessment of liver biopsy METAVIR score was ***:*** IgG antibodies were found in 32.8%of patients and in 22.2%of controls(P=0.02).Toxoplasma seropositivity was significantly associated with lymphadenopathy,history of blood transfusion and reflex impairment in *** hepatitis C virus(HCV)and chronic HCV-related cirrhosis groups compared to chronic HBV and chronic HBV-related cirrhosis groups expressed significantly higher prevalence of *** seropositivity(odds ratio(OR) =4;95%confidence interval(CI):1.3-12.6;P=0.013,OR=4.8;95%CI:1.5-14.9;P=0.006,respectively).Within the chronic HCV group,*** seropositivity significantly associated disease evolution as regards to METAVIR histopathological system for fibrosis and inflammation(OR=19.4;95%CI:2.3-165.2;P=0.0008,OR=0.29;95%CI:0.1-0.8;P=0.01,respectively).Albumin,international normalized ratio(INR) and platelets count were the laboratory parameters significantly altered in Toxoplasma-positrvc chronic HCV patients(P=0.00 l,0.03,0.04,respectively).Child-Pugh scoring for cirrhosis in chronic HCV group placed the majority of seropositive patient in class C with significant statistical difference compared to Child A reference group(OR= 0.08;95%67:0.01-0.5;P=0.003).Conclusions:Toxoplasma seropositivity was high in patients with cirrhosis and associated higher grades of inflammation and necrosis signifying disease evolution,suggesting that cirrhotic patients may thus form a risk group for toxoplasmosis.

Evaluation of liver tissue by polymerase chain reaction for hepatitis B virus in patients with negative viremia

AIM: To assess the clinical significance of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA localization in the liver tissue of patients with positive HBsAg and negative ***: HBV virological parameters of 33 HBsAg positive chronic hepatitis patients, including seromarkers and HBV DNA amplification in both sera and liver biopsies, were ***: Ten patients had negative viremia and positive HBV DNA in their liver biopsies. Most of them had HBeAg-negative/HBeAb-positive chronic *** liver biochemical and histopathological profiles were different from the viremic patients. Their disease pattern was designated as 'hepatitis B in situ'.CONCLUSION: Hepatitis B in situ is a consequential entity which can be missed in clinical practice. It is a new clinical pattern of chronic HBV infection that considers HBV in liver biopsy and adds a new indication for antiviral therapy.

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells as treatment of adjuvant rheumatoid arthritis in a rat model

AIM:To investigate the effect of human umbilical cord stem cells,both mesenchymal and hematopoietic(CD34+),in the treatment of ***:Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) and hematopoietic(CD34+) stem cells(HSC) were isolated from human umbilical cord blood obtained from the umbilical cord of healthy pregnant donors undergoing fullterm normal vaginal ***,HSC,methotrexate(MTX) and sterile saline were injected intra-articularly into the rat hindpaw with complete freunds adjuvant(CFA) induced arthritis after the onset of disease(day 34),when arthritis had become well established(arthritis score ≥ 2).Arthritic indices were evaluated and the levels of interleukin(IL)-1,tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α and interferon(IFN)-γ and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in serum were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent *** of all groups were sacrificed 34 d after beginning treatment,except positive control(PC) which was sacrificed at 10,21 and 34 d for microscopic observation of disease *** used hematoxylin,eosin and Masson's trichrome stains for histopathological examination of cartilage and ***:The mean arthritis scores were similar in all groups at 12 and 34 d post immunization,with no statistical significant *** the injection of stem cells(hematopoietic and mesenchymal),the overall arthritis signs were significantly improved around 21 d after receiving the injection and totally disappeared at day 34 post treatment in MSC *** hindpaw diameter(mm) in the MSC rats was about half that of the PC and MTX groups(P = 0.007 and P = 0.021,respectively) and 0.6 mm less than the HSC group(P = 0.047),as indicated by paw *** with these findings,serum levels of TNF-α,IFN-γ and IL-1 decreased significantly in HSC and MSC groups compared to PC and MTX groups(P < 0.05),while the expression of IL-10 was *** examination with H and E stain revealed that the MTX treated group showed signific
