Herein,phloroglucinol tristearate(PhgTS)was used to study the crystallization process due to its unique symmetric structure containing a benzene ring and three aliphatic *** of crystallized PhgTS from four solvents under diverse conditions were analyzed in detail and their formation process was *** cross is shown by PhgTS spherulites obtained from aprotic solvents via polarized optical *** comparison,no Maltese cross can be observed from branch-like crystals formed from protic *** on the micro-scaled morphology,lamellae were found to be the basic blocks constructing both PhgTS spherulites and branch-like crystals,which were formed predominantly by stacked PhgTS *** differential characters of the solvents did not affect the formation of lamellas,the solvents played a crucial role in the formation of self-assembled microscaled *** particular,the morphologies of spherulites were strongly affected by the concentration of PhgTS solutions,surrounding tempera-ture and evaporation rate of ***,a higher concentration of PhgTS led to more homogeneous spherulites,a lower evaporation rate resulted in more compact spherulites,and a higher surounding temperature generated preferentially more ring-banded spherulites of PhgTS.

Over the past few years, OSL and TCN datings of glacial material from High Asia have come into fashion. To this day, however, these techniques do not permit safe calibration. The intensity of the cosmic ray flux is being modulated by the solar and terrestrial magnetic fields and their secular fluctuations in the past. So far, these variations cannot be converted into the respective local TCN production rates for High Asia. We have reason to believe that the ages that are being calculated despite these uneertainties are generally overestimated. This assessment is supported by eonventional radiocarbon dates and above＂ all by the glacial chronology developed independently on the basis of the Quaternary geological method. The strongly emerging evidence for a much more extensive LGM glaciation of High Asia is, however, either being ignored or rejected by many authors, solely on the basis of the above-mentioned uncalibrated datings. This self-conceit based on the ＂dating fallacy＂, as we call it, should be avoided since it goes decidedly against the standards of the scientific method established in Quaternary geology and makes a fundamental scientific discussion impossible.

Protecting and preserving our environmental systems require the ability to understand the spatio-temporal distri- bution of soils, parent material, topography, and land cover as well as the effects of human activities on ecosystems. Space-time modelling of ecosystems in an environmental digital library is essential for visualizing past, present, and future impacts of changes occurring within such landscapes (e.g., shift in land use practices). In this paper, we describe three novel features, spa- tio-temporal indexing, visualization, and geostatistical genre, for the environmental digital library, Environmental Visualization and Geographic Enterprise System (ENVISAGE), currently in progress at the University of Florida.

The applicability, transferability, and scalability of visible/near-infrared(VNIR)-derived soil total carbon(TC) models are still poorly understood. The objectives of this study were to: i) compare models of three multivariate statistical methods, partial least squares regression(PLSR), support vector machine(SVM), and random forest methods, to predict soil logarithm-transformed TC(logTC) using five fields(local scale) and a pooled(regional-scale) VNIR spectral dataset(a total of 560 TC spectral datasets), ii)assess the model transferability among fields, and iii) evaluate their up-and downscaling behaviors in Florida, USA. The transferability and up-and downscaling of the models were limited by the following factors: i) the spectral data domain, ii) soil attribute domain,iii) methods that describe the internal model structure of VNIR-TC relationships, and iv) environmental domain space of attributes that control soil carbon dynamics. All soil logTC models showed excellent performance based on all three methods with R^2> 0.86,bias 2.70%, and ratio of prediction error to interquartile range(RPIQ) > 4.54. The PLSR method performed substantially better than the SVM method to scale and transfer the TC models. This could be attributed to the tendency of SVM to overfit models, while the asset of the PLSR method was its robustness when the models were validated with independent datasets, transferred, and/or scaled. The upscaled soil TC models performed somewhat better in terms of model fit(R2), RPD, and RPIQ, whereas the downscaled models showed less bias and smaller RMSE based on PLSR. We found no universal trend indicating which of the four limiting factors mentioned above had the most impact that constrained the transferability and scalability of the models. Given that several factors can impinge on the empirically derived soil spectral prediction models, as demonstrated by this study,

Most disturbed habitats in the tropics and subtropics harbor numerous species of invasive ants, and occasionally the same species has been introduced repeatedly from multiple geographical sources. We examined how experimental crossbreeding between sexuals from different populations affects the fitness of queens of the tramp ant Cardiocondyla itsukii, which is widely distributed in Asia and the Pacific Islands. Eggs laid by queens that mated with nestmate males had a higher hatchi ng rate than eggs laid by queens mated to males from neighboring (Hawaii x Kauai) or distant introduced populations (Hawaii/Kauai x Okinawa). Furthermore, inbreeding queens had a Ion ger lifespan and produced a less female-biased offspring sex ratio than queens from allopatric mating. This suggests that the genetic divergence between different source populations may already be so large that in case of multiple invasions eventual crossbreeding might negatively affect the fitness of tramp ants.

One of the main problems during the welding of ferritic stainless steels is severe grain growth within the heat-affected zone （HAZ） In the present study, the microstmctural characteristics of tungsten inert gas （TIG） welded AISI409 ferritic stainless steel were investigated by electron backscattered diffraction （EBSD）, and the effects of welding parameters on the grain size, local misorientation, and low-angle grain boundaries were studied. A 3-D finite element model （FEM） was developed to predict the effects of welding parameters on the holding time of the HAZ above the critical temperature of grain growth. It is found that the base metal is not fully recrystallized. During the welding, complete recrystallization is followed by severe grain growth. A decrease in the number of low-angle grain boundaries is observed within the HAZ. FEM results show that the final state of residual sWains is caused by competition between welding plastic strains and their release by recrystallization. Still, the decisive factor for grain growth is heat input.

A recent work of Iliopoulos et al published in Cell highlighted a circuit orchestrated by microRNAs (miRNAs) that results in liver tumorigenesis and inflammation. This feedback loop, governed by miR-24 and miR-629, promotes a hepatocyte nuclear factor-4α transient inhibition resulting in miR-124 induction and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 activation. These promising data support the use of miRNA mimics or inhibitors as potent therapeutic approaches in liver cancer.
