Rheumatoid arthritis(RA) is an autoimmune disease affecting 1% of the world population and is characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints sometimes accompanied by extra-articular manifestations. K/Bx N mice, originally described in 1996 as a model of polyarthritis, exhibit knee joint alterations. The aim of this study was to describe temporomandibular joint(TMJ)inflammation and damage in these mice. We used relevant imaging modalities, such as micro-magnetic resonance imaging(μMRI)and micro-computed tomography(μCT), as well as histology and immunofluorescence techniques to detect TMJ alterations in this mouse model. Histology and immunofluorescence for Col-I, Col-II, and aggrecan showed cartilage damage in the TMJ of K/Bx N animals, which was also evidenced by μCT but was less pronounced than that seen in the knee joints. μMRI observations suggested an increased volume of the upper articular cavity, an indicator of an inflammatory process. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes(FLSs)isolated from the TMJ of K/Bx N mice secreted inflammatory cytokines(IL-6 and IL-1β) and expressed degradative mediators such as matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs). K/Bx N mice represent an attractive model for describing and investigating spontaneous damage to the TMJ, a painful disorder in humans with an etiology that is still poorly understood.

Nanostructured hybrid materials for bone-tooth unit regeneration

As a part of regenerative medicine, biomaterials are largely used in this field of nanotechnology and tissue engineering research. We have recently developed a new scaffold using electrospun nanofibers of Poly (ε-caprolactone), PCL which is able to mimic the collagen extracellular matrix of cells. The aim of this study was to engineer a biological and implantable structure leading the regeneration of the tooth-bone unit. For this aim, we have cultured mouse osteoblasts embedded in a collagen gel on the nanofibrous membrane and coupled this structure with an embryonic dental germ before implantation. To follow bone and tooth regeneration, we have performed RT-PCR, histology and immunofluorescence analysis. We showed here that this leaving implantable structure represents an accurate strategy for bone-tooth unit regeneration. We report here the first demonstration of bone-tooth unit regeneration by using a strategy based on a synthetic nanostructured membrane. This electrospun membrane is manufactured by using an FDA approved polymer, PCL and functionalized with osteoblasts before incorporation of the tooth germs at ED14 (the first lower molars) to generate bone-tooth unit in vivo after implantation in mice. Our technology represents an excellent platform on which other sophisticated products could be based.

Horseshoe crabs,the most well-known example of“living fossils”,are iconic and ecologically important macroinvertebrates in coastal and estuarine *** blood is a crucial resource for manufacturing Limulus or Tachypleus amebocyte lysate to detect bacterial endotoxins or fungal contamination in drug and medical *** enhanced understanding of their ecological roles and trophic interactions in the food webs is fundamental to facilitate resource management for the declining populations in *** information of the Asian species,however,is mainly derived from preliminary,scattered reports from a limited number of study *** this study,resource utilization,trophic niche dynamics,and trophic interaction of the juvenile tri-spine horseshoe crab,Tachypleus tridentatus(instars 1–12,approximately 0.5–8 years old)across ontogeny was assessed in diversified nursery habitats along the northern Beibu Gulf,China,using carbon and nitrogen stable *** results suggest that:(i)*** are ecological generalists given the vast range of carbon isotopic values and trophic niche width estimates exhibited between multiple instar groups;(ii)juvenile *** across most habitat types predominantly assimilated energy from a variety of basal production sources in the food web,but primarily depended on sedimentary organic matter and seagrass resource pools;(iii)ontogenetic shifts in juvenile dietary proportions were evident,with decreased reliance on sedimentary organic matter,coupled with increased reliance on benthic macroinvertebrate grazers,detritivores,and omnivores with age;and(iv)nearly all juvenile instars occupied similar trophic positions in the food web with slight shifts in trophic position present with increasing *** findings indicate that resource availability and ontogenetic diet shifts strongly influence horseshoe crab trophic dynamics,and age should be accounted when formulating habitat conservation measures based on resour

New materials that exhibit strong second-order optical nonlinearities at a desired operational frequency are of paramount importance for nonlinear *** second-order susceptibility χ^((2)) has been obtained in semiconductor quantum wells(QWs).Unfortunately,the limited confining potential in semiconductor QWs causes formidable challenges in scaling such a scheme to the visible/near-infrared(NIR)frequencies for more vital nonlinear-optic ***,we introduce a metal/dielectric heterostructured platform,i.e.,TiN/Al_(2)O_(3) epitaxial multilayers,to overcome that *** platform has an extremely high χ^((2)) of approximately 1500 pm/V at NIR *** combining the aforementioned heterostructure with the large electric field enhancement afforded by a nanostructured metasurface,the power efficiency of second harmonic generation(SHG)achieved 10^(−4) at an incident pulse intensity of 10 GW/cm^(2),which is an improvement of several orders of magnitude compared to that of previous demonstrations from nonlinear surfaces at similar *** proposed quantum-engineered heterostructures enable efficient wave mixing at visible/NIR frequencies into ultracompact nonlinear optical devices.

The Addition of High Intensity Interval Training Reduces Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors and Enhances Strength in Active, Healthy Adults

The guidelines for cardiovascular exercise intensity are not clear with respect to the optimal training protocols to reduce cardiovascular disease risk (CVD) as well as to enhance strength. At this time, it is impossible to deduce the independent effects of vigorous-intensity exercise from past studies as the volume of either physical activity duration or energy expended differed in comparison to moderate-intensity exercise. Our goal was to augment the literature focused on the potential benefits of high intensity training with novel methodology that includes trained adults in a group fitness environment. Vigorous intensity training may be a critical component of the physical activity prescription if active adults demonstrate decreases in CVD risk factors and increases in strength. We hypothesize that a 6-week high intensity group fitness intervention will produce beneficial effects on CVD risk factors by reducing body mass, total cholesterol, LDL-C, triglyceride concentration, and by enhancing lean body mass percentage, HDL-C, glucose tolerance, and maximal oxygen consumption as well as both upper and lower body strength. Eighty-four healthy adults, 50 women and 34 men, completed the 6-week intervention. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups;the first was a high intensity interval-training (GRIT) program, while the second was a moderate intensity-training (FIT) program. All participants completed 5 hours of fitness classes per week. We collected musculoskeletal and physiological data at the start and finish of the study. In support of our hypotheses, the GRIT group significantly reduced body mass, triglyceride concentration and enhanced lean body percentage, glucose tolerance, and maximal oxygen consumption in addition to all of the strength measures. Automated Protection Performance Assessment and Enhancement

New strategies and methods for assessing the security of protection systems to reduce the risk of unnecessary disturbances and blackouts are the main topic of the present paper. The system behavior of a protection system and network is analyzed and assessed as a whole. Hence, the established algorithms are capable to handle complex network structures with regard to an intelligent data management as well as data validation. Protection security assessment comprised two different aspects: on the one hand the behavior regarding dependability and security in terms of speed and sensitivity, on the other hand the behavior regarding the response on dynamic network phenomena as voltage stability and transient stability. A new automated method for assessing the dependability and security of protection systems is shown. The short-circuit simulation tool is used to provide a simulation system including network and protection devices as a whole. The handling of the large amount of resulting data is done by an intelligent visualization method like a “fingerprint” analysis. Further on the paper is focused on the protection response on dynamic network phenomena and presents innovative strategies for this investigation aspect. The structure of simulation environment will be described. Results of a case study show the application of this method on a real network. The system tool which is concluding these two aspects of protection assessment is called SIGUARD? PSA.
