The paper describes a large-area analysis of the triggering zones of shallow landslides on a case of unsaturated layered volcanic air-fall(pyroclastic) soil deposits in Cervinara site(18 km^2),Southern *** physically-based model TRIGRS(Transient Rainfall Infiltration-Based Grid Regional Slope-Stability) is used,which is used with either saturated or unsaturated conditions and implemented in a GIS *** addition to using the TRIGRS model to simulate some recent landslides,a new simplified approach is also tested to take into account the actual layered soil *** consistency check of the model and of the input data is performed with reference to slope stable conditions before *** performances of the models are evaluated through the ROC curves and two other quantitative indexes taken from the literature referring to the slope failures caused by December 1999 *** the simplifications and limitations of the present work,both unsaturated conditions and layered stratigraphy are outlined as key factors for the slope stability of shallow deposits of unsaturated coarse-grained soils subjected to short heavy rainfall.

Unsaturated shallow soil deposits may be affected by either superficial soil erosion or shallow landslides in adjacent or overlapping source areas and in different seasons when a different soil suction *** triggering analysis of both these processes is a relevant issue for the hazard analysis while the literature mostly provides specific approaches for erosion or for *** paper proposes a largearea analysis for a case study of Southern Italy,consisting of unsaturated shallow deposits of loose pyroclastic(air-fall) volcanic soils that have been repeatedly affected by erosion and landslides in special *** a past catastrophic event, the simulated source areas of shallow landslides are smaller than those observed in the field while the simulated eroded areas with thickness greater than 5cm are comparable with the in-situ evidences, if the analysis takes into account high rainfall intensity and a spatially variable soil cover *** in general, the results of the paper are consistent with the previous literature and also provide a methodological contribution about the application of distinct tools over large *** added value is that the paper shows how the combination of distinct large-area analyses may help with understanding the dominant slope instability *** once this goal is fully achieved, can specific physically-based analyses be confidently performed at detailed scales and for smaller specific areas.

In the July 12 issue of Science maga-zine, researchers from the AlbertEinstein College of Medicine, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the Durham VA Medical Centre and Duke University published an elegant study demonstrating that the sym-pathetic nervous system, acting through β2 and β3-adrenoceptors in the prostate, plays an important role in the initiation of prostate can-cer, while the parasympathetic nervous system plays a role in the dissemination of tumour metastases via M1 muscarirdc receptors. These findings are significant because they indicate that receptors associated with the autonomic nervous system may be viable tar-gets for prostate cancer therapy.

Landslides are the most intense and serious manifestations of the degradation of slopes and they are the main causes of geological hazard when they,directly or indirectly,involving towns and *** are a global environment problem;there are several examples that have produced untold damages and loss of human lives in many parts of the *** 1920 the landslides mobilization,as a result of a strong earthquake in China,in the province of Kansu,killed 200,000 people;in 1938 fast debris flow,triggered by heavy rainfalls in Japan,caused the death of 600 people;in 1963 in Italy the Vajont disaster caused the death of 1,899 people,as a result of a landslide localized in the underlying artificial *** the last years there have been many tragedies linked to intense rainfall events which have sparked many shallow landslides:1996 in Garfagnana,1998 in Sarno,2009 in the Ionic side of Messina,2011 in *** throw light on this problem,over the past decades,the assessment and mitigation of landslides hazard and the danger related to it,have become goals of paramount importance in territorial planning and,more generally,in its management and with it the safeguard of the historical and cultural heritage within *** occurrence of events which are considered exceptional thus implies a re-reading in terms of spatial planning to renovate the slopes and river-beds,as well as urban planning,infrastructural and socio-economic *** complex nature of these instability events that affect anthropized areas does not allow specific approaches for the defence of single good,but it finds a more effective solution based on the extensive knowledge of territory,perhaps at the scale of individual or several watersheds.

The influence of grafting on agronomical and qualitative characteristics of four Sicilian eggplant landraces was investigated. Grafted and ungrafted plants were compared in the open field in the northern coast of Sicily. Solanum torvum seedlings were used as rootstock. Regardless of genotypes tested, grafting significantly increased total fruit production, marketable production, and number of marketable fruits, but did not affect weight of marketable fruits and waste production. Landrace 2（Sciacca）, with black epidermal tissue and pyriform fruit shape, when grafted onto S. torvum not only gave a higher yield performance than ungrafted plants, but also showed a higher phenolic antioxidant content. Landrace 4（Sicilia）, with black epidermal tissue and small cylindrical fruits also benefited, when grafted onto S. torvum, from a substantial increase in antioxidant fruit content. As consumers＇ demand for fruits and vegetables rich in compounds important for human health is steadily increasing, these landrace/rootstock combinations should deserve more attention by plant nurseries involved in grafted seedling production and interested in the valorization and conservation of eggplant biodiversity.

Background:This study examined the chemistry and biological effects of Costus speciosus(***)Sm.(***)which has been traditionally used by Sarawak natives to treat urological disorders for ***:This study assesses the efficacy of *** in treating urological disorders by investigating its effects on the contractility of isolated prostate glands since this is the most effective way to relieve lower urinary tract symptoms that accompany benign prostatic *** were collected and extracts of *** rhizome,root,leaf and stem were made using water at different ***:*** rhizome and root decoction(boiling,about 100℃)combination extract(2 mg/mL)inhibited electrical field stimulation-induced neurogenic contractions of isolated rat prostatic gland by 44±8%(p=0.01,n=4);whereas room temperature(about 20℃)rhizome and root combination extract inhibited electrical field stimulation contractions by 62±8%(p=0.003,n=4).*** rhizome(p=0.0004,n=6),root(pve high-performance liquid chromatography and evaluated by isolated organ bath bioassay revealed that inhibitory activity of the extract was due to highly polar soluble components present in the ***:*** extracts exert a direct inhibitory effect on prostate tissue which is likely to be therapeutically beneficial in treating lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Multiple lines of evidence indicate that Wnt/β-catenin signaling plays a fundamental role in colorectal cancer (CRC) initiation and progression. Recent genome-wide data have confirmed that in CRC this pathway is one of the most frequently modified by genetic or epigenetic alterations affecting almost 90% of Wnt/β-catenin gene members. A major challenge is thus learning how the corrupted coordination of this pathway is tied to other signalings to enhance cell growth. Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is emerging as a growth-limiting and differentiation-promoting factor. In tumorigenesis it exerts a tumor suppressor role and is potentially linked with the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Based on these results, the identification of new selective PPARγ modulators with inhibitory effects on the Wnt/β-catenin pathway is becoming an interesting perspective. Should, in fact, these molecules display such properties, new research avenues would be opened aimed at developing new molecular targeted drugs. Herein, we review the basic principles and present new hypotheses underlying the crosstalk between Wnt/β-catenin and PPARγ signaling. Furthermore, we discuss the advances in our understanding as to how their altered regulation can culminate in colon cancer and the efforts aimed at designing novel PPARγ agonists endowed with Wnt/β-catenin inhibitory effects to be used as therapeutic and/or preventive agents.

AIM:To assess linear endoscopic ultrasound (L-EUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in biliary tract dilation and suspect small ampullary ***:L-EUS and MRI data were compared in 24 patients with small ampullary tumors;all with subsequent histological *** were collected prospectively and the accuracy of detection,histological characterization and N staging were assessed retrospectivelyusing the results of surgical or endoscopic treatment as a ***:A suspicion of ampullary tumor was present in 75% of MRI and all L-EUS examinations,with 80% agreement between EUS and histological findings at ***,L-EUS and histological TN staging at surgery showed moderate agreement (κ=0.54).CONCLUSION:L-EUS could be a useful adjunct as a diagnostic tool in the evaluation of patients with sus-pected ampullary tumors.

The case in analysis is Santa Maria di Collemaggio, the church symbol of the town of L＇Aquila and the most important example of Romanesque style in Abruzzi, tragically damaged by the earthquake in 2009. The following paper starts with an accurate analysis of the Basilica, whose historical, stylistical cultural characteristics make it an unicum in the whole urban environment. The authors tried to identify in which way these values have been compromised or altered after the earthquake through several analysis （surveys, historical researches etc.） aiming at the recognition of collapses, the cracks profile, the structural transformations caused by the provisional measures： the goal is to provide a kind of Basilica ＂cognitive manual＂ that will be useful for the future interventions. This first analysis allowed to understand many aspects： on the one hand, the constructive phases and which damages were caused by past careless interventions of restoration, drawing attention to the vulnerability elements of the Basilica; on the other hand, the innovative technologies and materials of the post-seismic provisional measures and their exact location.
