Exceptional electrostrain with minimal hysteresis and superior temperature stability under low electric field in KNN-based lead-free piezoceramics

Over the past two decades,(K_(0.5)Na_(0.5))NbO_(3)(KNN)-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics have made significant progress.However,attaining a high electrostrain with remarkable temperature stability and minimal hysteresis under low electric fields has remained a significant challenge.To address this long-standing issue,we have employed a collaborative approach that combines defect engineering,phase engineering,and relaxation engineering.The LKNNS-6BZH ceramic,when sintered at T_(sint)=1170℃,demonstrates an impressive electrostrain with a d_(33) value of 0.276%and 1379 pm·V^(-1)under 20 kV·cm^(-1),which is comparable to or even surpasses that of other lead-free and Pb(Zr,Ti)O_(3)ceramics.Importantly,the electrostrain performance of this ceramic remains stable up to a temperature of 125℃,with the lowest hysteresis observed at 9.73%under 40 kV·cm^(-1).These excellent overall performances are attributed to the presence of defect dipoles involving V′_(A)-V∙∙_(O) and B′_(Nb)-V∙∙O,the coexistence of R-O-T multiphase,and the tuning of the trade-off between long-range ordering and local heterogeneity.This work provides a lead-free alternative for piezoelectric actuators and a paradigm for designing piezoelectric materials with outstanding comprehensive performance under low electric fields.

A versatile model with three-dimensional triangular lattice for unconventional transport and various topological effects

The finite Berry curvature in topological materials can induce many subtle phenomena, such as the anomalous Hall effect(AHE), spin Hall effect(SHE), anomalous Nernst effect(ANE), non-linear Hall effect(NLHE) and bulk photovoltaic effects. To explore these novel physics as well as their connection and coupling, a precise and effective model should be developed. Here, we propose such a versatile model—a 3D triangular lattice with alternating hopping parameters, which can yield various topological phases,including kagome bands, triply degenerate fermions, double Weyl semimetals and so on. We reveal that this special lattice can present unconventional transport due to its unique topological surface states and the aforementioned topological phenomena, such as AHE, ANE, NLHE and the topological photocurrent effect. In addition, we also provide a number of material candidates that have been synthesized experimentally with this lattice, and discuss two materials, including a non-magnetic triangular system for SHE, NLHE and the shift current, and a ferromagnetic triangular lattice for AHE and ANE. Our work provides an excellent platform, including both the model and materials, for the study of Berry-curvature-related physics.

Multiscale observation in wide-spatial radar surveillance based on coherent FDA design

Wide-spatial radar surveillance missions are challenging tasks, requiring an increased power budget and agility in transmission aimed at extracting information from multiple targets in different environments. These requirements necessitate high transmitting degrees of freedom(DOF) to achieve the objective of multiscale observation for specific tasks in specialized regions of interest. Herein, we exploit the multiscale observation ability in wide-spatial radar surveillance based on frequency diverse array(FDA)radar. The proposed method facilitates spatial anisotropic control of multiple radar resources, including the transmitting waveforms, beampattern, and bandwidth. By utilizing a coherent FDA radar, we offer principles for the selection of baseband waveforms, in addition to the quantitative design of the beampattern gain and optimal bandwidth from the perspective of detection. The feasibility of the proposed method is validated through numerical experiments, thus indicating the potential in wide-spatial radar surveillance. Moreover,this work can be regarded as a preliminary attempt to gauge the efficacy of the computational array, a novel academic concept.

Do nocturnal birds use acoustic and visual cues to avoid predation by bats?

Anti-predation strategies are critical to animal survival and are fundamental to deciphering predator–prey interactions.As an important defense strategy,sensory predator detection(such as through acoustic and visual cues)enables animals to assess predation risk and execute predator-avoidance behavior;however,there are limited studies on the anti-predation behavior of nocturnal animals.The prey of bats provides an excellent representative system for examining the anti-predation behavior of nocturnal animals.Here,we broadcasted different types of echolocation calls of the bird-eating bat Ia io to two wild passerine birds,namely,Zosterops japonicus and Sinosuthora webbiana,that are preyed upon by I.io,and presented the birds with individual bats under different light intensities.The results showed that both bird species were able to perceive the low-frequency audible portion of the bats’echolocation calls;however,they did not exhibit escape responses to the acoustic stimuli.In the dark and under moonlit conditions,both bird species were unable to respond to active bats at close range and the birds only exhibited evasive flight behavior when bats approached or touched them.These results suggest that nocturnal passerine birds may not be able to use acoustic or visual cues to detect bats and adopt evasive maneuvers to avoid predation.This work suggests that bat predation pressure may not elicit primary predator-avoidance responses in nocturnal passerine birds.The results provide new insights into the anti-predation behavior of nocturnal animals.

BACKGROUND Melioidosis,an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei(B.pseudomallei),occurs endemically in Southeast Asia and Northern Australia and is a serious opportunistic infection associated with a high mortality rate.CASE suMMARY A 58-year-old woman presented with scattered erythema on the skin of her limbs,followed by fever and seizures.B.pseudomallei was isolated successively from the patient’s urine,blood,and pus.Magnetic resonance imaging showed abscess formation involving the right forehead and the right frontal region.subsequently,abscess resection and drainage were performed.The patient showed no signs of relapse after 4 months of follow-up visits post-treatment.CONCLUSION We present here a unique case of multi-systemic melioidosis that occurs in nonendemic regions in a patient who had no recent travel history.Hence,it is critical to enhance awareness of melioidosis in non-endemic regions.

Cadaverine and putrescine exposure influence carbon and nitrogen cycling genes in water and sediment of the Yellow River

The response patterns of microbial functional genes involved in biogeochemical cycles to cadaver decay is a central topic of recent environmental sciences.However,the response mechanisms and pathways of the functional genes associated with the carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)cycling to cadaveric substances such as cadaverine and putrescine remain unclear.This study explored the variation of functional genes associated with C fixation,C degradation and N cycling and their influencing factors under cadaverine,putrescine and mixed treatments.Our results showed only putrescine significantly increased the alpha diversity of C fixation genes,while reducing the alpha diversity of N cycling genes in sediment.For the C cycling,the mixed treatment significantly decreased the total abundance of reductive acetyl-CoA pathway genes(i.e.,acsB and acsE)and lig gene linked to lignin degradation in water,while only significantly increasing the hydroxypropionate-hydroxybutylate cycle(i.e.,accA)gene abundance in sediment.For the N cycling,mixed treatment significantly decreased the abundance of the nitrification(i.e.,amoB),denitrification(i.e.,nirS3)genes in water and the assimilation pathway gene(i.e.,gdhA)in sediment.Environmental factors(i.e.,total carbon and total nitrogen)were all negatively associated with the genes of C and N cycling.Therefore,cadaverine and putrescine exposure may inhibit the pathway in C fixation and N cycling,while promoting C degradation.These findings can offer some new insight for the management of amine pollution caused by animal cadavers.

An overview of potential cardioprotective benefits of xanthophylls in atherosclerosis:an evidence-based review

Atherosclerosis,as the most prevalent form of cardiovascular disease,is characterized by oxidized lowdensity lipoprotein(ox-LDL)accumulation in the vascular wall,increased inflammation of the large arteries,dysfunction of the endothelial cells(ECs)and vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs),which may eventually lead to the formation of plaques.Xanthophylls,one of the main groups of carotenoids,have been proposed as preventive agents or adjunct therapies to prevent and slow the progression of atherosclerosis due to their cardioprotective properties.However,the underlying preventive mechanism of action of xanthophylls on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis remains unclear,and clinical evidence of the effect of xanthophylls on atherosclerosis have not yet been summarized and critically reviewed.In this regard,we conducted a comprehensive literature search in four scientific databases(Pub Med,Google Scholar,Science Direct and Web of Science)and carefully analyzed the existing evidence to provide meaningful insights on the association between xanthophylls and atherosclerosis from various aspects.Based on the evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies,we explored several potential mechanisms,including antioxidant effect,anti-inflammatory effect,regulation of lipid metabolism,and modulation of ECs and VSMCs dysfunction,and we found that a clear picture of regulatory pathways of xanthophylls on atherosclerosis prevention and treatment is still lacking.In addition,epidemiological studies suggested the possible relationship among high dietary intake of xanthophylls,high plasma/serum xanthophylls and a reduced risk of atherosclerosis.Direct evidence from interventional studies investigating the effect of xanthophylls on atherosclerosis is very sparse,whilst indirect clinical evidence was only limited to astaxanthin and lutein.Therefore,well-designed long-term randomized controlled trials(RCTs)are highly recommended for future studies to investigate the effective dose of different xanthophylls on atherosclerosis prevention and t

Non-contact wide-field viewing system-assisted scleral buckling surgery for retinal detachment in silicone oilfilled eyes

AIM:To evaluate scleral buckling(SB)surgery using a noncontact wide-field viewing system and 23-gauge intraocular illumination for the treatment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in silicone oil(SO)-filled eyes.METHODS:Totally 9 patients(9 eyes)with retinal detachment in SO-filled eyes were retrospectively analyzed.All patients underwent non-contact wide-field viewing system-assisted buckling surgery with 23-gauge intraocular illumination.SO was removed at an appropriate time based on recovery.The patients were followed up for at least 3mo after SO removal.Retinal reattachment,complications,visual acuity and intraocular pressure(IOP)before and after surgery were observed.REsuLTS:Patients were followed up for a mean of 8.22mo(3-22mo)after SO removal.All patients had retinal reattachment.At the final follow-up,visual acuity showed improvement for 8 patients,and no change for 1 patient.The IOP was high in 3 patients before surgery,but it stabilized after treatment;it was not affected in the other patients.None of the patients had infections,hemorrhage,anterior ischemia,or any other complication.CONCLUSION:This new non-contact wide-field viewing system-assisted SB surgery with 23-gauge intraocular illumination is effective and safe for retinal detachment in SO-filled eyes.

The hydrophobic cluster on the surface of protein is the key structural basis for the SDS-resistance of chondroitinase VhChlABC

The application of chondroitinase requires consideration of the complex microenvironment of the target.Our previous research reported a marine-derived sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)-resistant chondroitinase VhChlABC.This study further investigated the mechanism of VhChlABC resistance to SDS.Focusing on the hydrophobic cluster on its strong hydrophilic surface,it was found that the reduction of hydrophobicity of surface residues Ala181,Met182,Met183,Ala184,Val185,and Ile305 significantly reduced the SDS resistance and stability.Molecular dynamics(MD)simulation and molecular docking analysis showed that I305G had more conformational flexibility around residue 305 than wild type(WT),which was more conducive to SDS insertion and binding.The affinity of A181G,M182A,M183A,V185A and I305G to SDS was significantly higher than that of WT.In conclusion,the surface hydrophobic microenvironment composed of six residues was the structural basis for SDS resistance.This feature could prevent the binding of SDS and the destruction of hydrophobic packaging by increasing the rigid conformation of protein and reducing the binding force of SDS-protein.The study provides a new idea for the rational design of SDS-resistant proteins and may further promote chondroitinase research in the targeted therapy of lung diseases under the pressure of pulmonary surfactant.

Carbon steel anticorrosion performance and mechanism of sodium lignosulfonate

Lignin is a typical biological macromolecule with a three-dimensional network structure and abundant functional groups. It has excellent ionic complexation ability and amphiphilic molecular structure characteristics.In this study, the carbon steel anticorrosion performance of sodium lignosulfonate(SLS) in an acid solution was evaluated using the weight loss method, electrochemical measurements, scanning vibration electrode technique(SVET), and surface characterization methods. SLS exhibited excellent corrosion inhibition efficiency for Q235carbon steel in 1 mol·L^(-1) HCl, reaching a maximum value of 98%. A low SLS concentration of 20 mg·L^(-1) resulted in the maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency, which remained nearly constant at higher SLS concentrations.The SVET test demonstrated that the formation of an SLS adsorption film can impede corrosion. This study confirms the significance of the application of green biomass resources in the field of metal corrosion protection and green functional materials.
