Melatonin reduces traumatic brain injury-induced oxidative stress in the cerebral cortex and blood of rats

Free radicals induced by traumatic brain injury have deleterious effects on the function and antioxidant vitamin levels of several organ systems including the brain. Melatonin possesses antioxidant effect on the brain by maintaining antioxidant enzyme and vitamin levels. We in-vestigated the effects of melatonin on antioxidant ability in the cerebral cortex and blood of traumatic brain injury rats. Results showed that the cerebral cortex β-carotene, vitamin C, vita-min E, reduced glutathione, and erythrocyte reduced glutathione levels, and plasma vitamin C level were decreased by traumatic brain injury whereas they were increased following melatonin treatment. In conclusion, melatonin seems to have protective effects on traumatic brain inju-ry-induced cerebral cortex and blood toxicity by inhibiting free radical formation and supporting antioxidant vitamin redox system.

The study deals with modeling the vapor pressures of(solvent + salt) systems depending on the linear solvation energy relation(LSER) principles. The LSER-based vapor pressure model clarifies the simultaneous impact of the vapor pressure of a pure solvent estimated by the Xiang-Tan equation, the solubility and solvatochromic parameters of the solvent and the physical properties of the ionic salt. It has been performed independently two structural forms of the generalized solvation model, i.e. the unified solvation model with the integrated properties(USMIP) containing nine physical descriptors and the reduced property-basis solvation model. The vapor pressure data of fourteen(solvent + salt) systems have been processed to analyze statistically the reliability of existing models in terms of a log-ratio objective function. The proposed vapor pressure approaches reproduce the observed performance relatively accurately, yielding the overall design factors of 1.0643 and1.0702 for the integrated property-basis and reduced property-basis solvation models.

Objective:To explore cholinesterase inhibitory and antioxidant effect of six coniferous trees(Abies bornmulleriana,Picea pungens,Juniperus communis,Cedrus libani,Taxus baccata,and Cupressus sempervirens ***).Methods:Acetone(Ace),ethyl acetate(EtOAc),and ethanol(EtOh)extracts prepared from the needles and shoots of the six coniferous trees were screened for their acetylcholinesterase(AChE)and butyrylcholinesterasc(BChE)inhibitory activity at 100μg/*** activity of the extracts was tested using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPh)and N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylendiamine(DMPD)radical scavenging,nietal-chelation capacity,ferric-(FRAP)and phosphomolibdenum-reducing antioxidant power(PRAP)*** of the assays were performed in ELISA microplate *** phenol and flavonoid amounts in the extracts were determined ***:Among thirty-six extracts in total,the shoot-Ace extract of Cupressus sempervirens *** exerted the highest inhibition against AChE[(54.84±2.51)%],while the needle-Ace extract of Cedrus libani was the most effective in inhibiting BChE[(67.54±0.30)%].The highest DPPh radical scavenging effect,FRAP and PRAP was observed in the shoot-Ace and EtOAc extracts from Taxus *** all the extracts showed a variable degree of scavenging effect against DPMD *** shoot-EtOAc extract of Cedrus libani had the highest metalchelation capacity[(58.04±0.70)%].The shoot extracts of Taxus baccata were determined to have the richest total phenol content,which may contribute to its marked antioxidant ***:The conifer species screened in this study may contain cholinesterase-inhibiting and antioxidant properties,which might be useful against Alzheimer's disease.

AIM:To give an overview of the literature on left-sided acute appendicitis (LSAA) associated with situs inversus totalis (SIT) and midgut malrotation (MM).METhODS:We present a new case of LSAA with SIT and a literature review of studies published in the English language on LSAA,accessed via PubMed and Google Scholar ***:Ninety-five published cases of LSAA were evaluated and a 25-year-old female,who presented to our clinic with left lower abdominal pain caused by LSAA,is *** the reviewed literature,fiftyseven patients were male and 38 were female with an age range of 8 to 82 years and a median age of 29.1 ± 15.9 ***-six patients had SIT,23 had MM,three had cecal malrotation,and two had a previously unnoted congenital ***-nine patients had presentedto the hospital with left lower,14 with right lower and seven with bilateral lower quadrant pain,and seven subjects complained of left upper quadrant *** diagnosis was established preoperatively in 49 patients,intraoperatively in 19,and during the postoperative period in five;14 patients were aware of having this *** data of eight patients were not *** patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomy,which was combined with cholecystectomy in two *** examination of the appendix specimens revealed adenocarcinoma in only two of 95 ***:The diagnosis of left lower quadrant pain is based on well-established clinical symptoms,physical examination and physician's experience.

Vesical diverticula frequently result from bladder outlet obstructions. however, giant vesical diverticula which cause acute abdomen or intestinal obstruction are very rare. Our review of the English medical literature found 3 cases of bladder diverticula which caused gastrointestinal symptoms. here, we present a 57-yearold man with a giant diverticulum of the urinary bladder who complained of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, constipation, no passage of gas or feces, and abdominal distension for 3 d. A 20 cm x 15 cm diverticulum was observed upon laparotomy. The colonic obstruction was secondary to external compression of the rectum against the sacrum by a distended vesical diverticulum. We performed a diverticulectomy and primary closure. Twelve months postoperatively, the patient had no difficulty with voiding or defecation.

AIM:To compare the efficacy and safety of radical and conservative surgical interventions for liver hydatid ***:The study comprised 59 patients in two groups who had undergone radical and conservative surgical procedures for liver hydatid disease in our department between 2004 and 2009. Preoperative diagnostic tools,medical treatments,demographic and clinical characteristics,postoperative follow-up,and recurrence were compared in both groups. RESULTS:This non-randomized retrospective studyincluded 59 patients who had undergone liver hydatid disease surgery. The radical technique was used in 18 patients (mean age:42.1 ± 13.5 years,seven male,11 female),and the conservative technique was used in 41 patients (mean age:43.5 ± 13.9 years,17 male,24 female). The follow-up period ranged from 3 to 58 mo. Although operative time was significantly shorter in the conservative group (P he radical group (P = 0.045). No statistically significant differences were found in terms of hospitalization duration,cyst count and size,location,postoperative complications,scolicidal solution usage,or follow-up duration between the two ***:The more effective method for pre-venting postoperative recurrence is radical surgery. En-doscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for bile leakage in the early postoperative period may decrease the requirement for repeat surgery.

Immunologic response to acute hepatitis C is mainly a Th1 response, whereas fasciolopsiasis is associated with a diverse T-cell response. Interferon-alpha has immunomodulatory effects and enhances Th1 immune response. Fasciola infection could theoretically interfere with the Th1 immune response, even when acquired after an initial response to interferon-alpha treatment for acute hepatitis C virus （hCV） infection. We report here the case of a male patient who acquired Fasciola hepatica infection after an initial response to IFN-alpha therapy with a favorable outcome.

AIM:To evaluate the effects of growth hormone(Gh) on the histology of small intestines which might be related to the role of insulin like growth factor(IGF)-I, IGF-binding protein 3(IGFBP-3)and its receptors. METhODS:Twelve week-old adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into two *** study group(n =10),received recombinant human growth hormone (rGh)at a dose of 2 mg/kg per day subcutaneously for 14 d and the control group(n=10)received physiologic *** sections of jejunum were stained with periodic acid shift(PAS)and hematoxylin and eosin(hE) for light *** were also examined for IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and IGF-receptor *** intensity was graded semi-quantitatively using the hS- CORE. RESULTS:Goblet cells and the cells in crypt epitheliawere significantly increased in the study group compared to that of the control *** have demonstrated an increase of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 immunoreactivities in surface epithelium of the small intestine by Gh ***-I receptor immunoreactivities of crypt,villous columnar cells,enteroendocrine cells and muscularis mucosae were also more strongly positive in the study group compared to those of in the control group. CONCLUSION:These findings confirm the important trophic and protective role of Gh in the homeostasis of the small *** trophic effect is mediated by an increase in IGF-I synthesis in the small intestine, but the protective effect is not related to IGF-I.
