Aims: Obesity is the major contributor of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), but a unique phenotype of obesity known as metabolically healthy obese (MHO) shows healthier metabolic profile; however understanding of their biochemical correlates is poorly understood. Obesity is defined by Body mass index (BMI), but controversy exists regarding ethnic-specific BMI cut-offs. The present study used the Asian Indian BMI cut-offs to assess relationships of MHO phenotypes with oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation. Methods: In this case-control study, 299 metabolically-healthy (MH) respondents were divided into four groups as per Asian criteria for obesity: MH non-obese (MHNO), MH overweight (MHOW), MHO and MH severely obese (MHSO). Their oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory markers were measured. We report an important observation that the surface conductivity of antibody layer immobilized on polylysine-coated glass substrate decreases upon the formation of complex with their specific antigens. This change in conductivity has been observed for both monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. The conductance of monoclonal mouse 1gG immobilized on polylysine-coated glass substrate changed from 1.02×10^-8 Ω^-1 to 1.41×10^-11 Ω^-1 at 10 V when complex is formed due to the specific biomolecular interactions with rabbit anti-mouse 1gG F（ab′）2. Similar behavior was observed when the same set up was tested in two clinical assays：（1） anti-Leishmania antigen polyclonal antibodies taken from Kala Azar positive patient serum interacting with Leishmania promastigote antigen, and （2） anti-p21 polyclonal antibodies interacting with p21 antigen. The proposed concept can represent a new immunodiagnostic technique and may have wide ranging applications in biosensors and nanobiotechnology too.

A 33 years old female patient presented with posttraumatic pain in the right ibot tor which radiographs of the right foot was advised. No fracture was detected on radiographs and patient was managed conservatively on medications and posterior splint immobilization. We found coincidentally a short fourth metatarsal and an accessory navicular bone in the right foot radiographs. After 3 weeks of immobilization, she underwent mobilization of the right foot, weight bearing and intensive physio- therapy for 6 weeks. After two months of injury she was still complaining of pain on the plantar aspect of right foot which was diagnosed as metatarsalgia and operated on by excision of the neuroma present in the 3rd web space of the right foot. After surgery she was completely relieved of pain and could do activities well related to the right foot.

Obesity (Ob) is an accepted major risk factor for the metabolic syndrome (MetS), a combination of at least three of five risk factors, which predispose to high oxidative stress (OS), but all obese do not show symptoms of MetS. There is dearth of data comparing OS homeostasis of severely obese adults with and without MetS, and need for biomarkers to help in differential diagnosis. Erythrocytic lipid and protein damage markers, malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCO), antioxidant enzymes erythrocytic superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase (CAT), plasma glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) as ferric-reducing-ability-of-plasma (FRAP) were compared to understand OS homeostasis among 102 severely Ob (body mass index > 30), 102 Ob with severe (z-score > 2) MetS as per National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines and 100 healthy non-obese Controls. MDA/PCO and all antioxidant enzymes were lowest for ObMetS, followed by Ob, indicating greater damage to protein moieties of the erythrocytic membrane. Multiple regression analysis confirmed z-scores > 2 as significant predictor of lowered enzymes and TAC. Receiver Operator Curve analysis predicted that TAC was the most potential biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of MetS with an Odds Ratio of 88.5 indicating the high probability that FRAP would be low for ObMetS (z-score > 2) than for Ob with BMI > 30, but z-scores < 1. TAC is qualified as the most effective biomarker to distinguish between severely obese respondents with and without metabolic syndrome, and as a useful candidate for study of homeostatic breakdown in metabolic syndrome and the importance of z-score in assessment of MetS in obese respondents.

Does age, time since injury and meniscal injury affect short term functional outcomes in arthroscopic single bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction？

Purpose： We conducted this study to correlate the short term clinical outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament （ACL） reconstruction with patients＇ age, time since injury and associated meniscal injury. Methods： A total of 43 patients who underwent ACL reconstruction between October 2013 and February 2015 were taken for the study. Preoperative demographic data, clinical scores （Lysholm, IKDC） were recorded for each patient. Time since injury and associated meniscal injuries were recorded. Then a standardized surgical technique was used for each graft type. They were followed up for 6 months and the Lysholm and IKDC scores were evaluated. Results： Only 33 patients completed 6 months follow-up at the end of this study. Twenty-four patients （72.7%） were in the age group of 18-30 years. Nine patients belonged to age group 30-50 years （27.3%）. The p value for differences in Lysholm scores between the two age groups was not significant （0.339）. The p value for differences in IKDC scores between the two age groups was not significant either （0.138）. The mean Lysholm scores were 93.86 ± 3.024 for the group who presented 〈6 months post-injury, 92 ± 5.494 for the group who presented between 6 months and 1 year and 94.64±3.104 for the group who pre- sented after 1 year; whereas the mean IKDC scores were 92.43 ± 0.793, 90.64 ± 6.598 and 90.89 ± 2.113 respectively. The correlation of outcomes with meniscal injury had no statistical significance. Conclusion： Based on our study, we conclude that age, time since injury and associated meniscal injury does not affect short term functional outcome in ACL reconstruction.

Many problems in physics like reconstruction of the radially distributed emissivity from the line-of-sight projected intensity, the 3-D image reconstruction from cone beam projections in computerized tomography, etc. lead naturally, in the case of radial symmetry, to the study of Abel’s type integral equation. Obtaining the physically relevant quantity from the measured one requires, therefore the inversion of the Abel’s integral equation. The aim of this letter is to present a user friendly algorithm to invert generalized Abel integral equation by using homotopy perturbation method. The stability of the algorithm is analysed. The validity and applicability of this powerful technique is illustrated through various particular cases which demonstrate its efficiency and simplicity in solving these types of integral equations.

The paper presents correlation study on a series of Fe1-xAlx alloy samples prepared by arc melting. All the samples show crystalline structure, irrespective of the Al content and are textured mainly along (110) direction. The particle size decreases rapidly with x particularly after x > 0.3. The corresponding magnetic measurements were obtained at room temperature using a VSM, with a maximum applied field of 14 kOe. The results show that the ferromagnetic state of the samples disappears with x, and becomes paramagnetic for alloys with x ≥ 0.4. It is also found that coercivity (Hc) and resistivity increase with x. The results were interpreted in terms of continuous change in their electronic structure i.e. overlap of the electron wave functions of the magnetic atoms with the Al electron wave function.

A broad range of applications in spintronics and spin-filtering devices are found in rare earth nitrides due to its half-metallic behaviour and high magnetic moments. We intend to study the electronic and magnetic properties of REN in the frame work of density functional theory (DFT) by using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. It was found from the computed density of states (DOS) and the band structures that the total DOS of EuN is contributed mainly by the 4f-state electrons of the Eu atom. In the case of SmN and EuN, we fill the majority spin f states and create an exchange field that is felt by the other electrons in the material whose effect is more pronounced and leads to a significant-splitting of the nitrogen p bands.
