Velocity Interferometer system for Any Reflector(VIsAR) [Barker and Hollenbach, J. Appl. Phys. 43, 4669(1972)]is a well-known diagnostic that is employed on many shock physics and pulsed-power experiments. With the VIsAR diagnostic, the velocity on the surface of any metal flyer can be found. For most experiments employing VIsAR, either a kinetic pressure [Grady, Mech. Mater. 29, 181(1998)] or a magnetic pressure [Lemke et al., Intl J. Impact Eng. 38,480(2011)] drives the motion of the flyer. Moreover, reliable prediction of the time-dependent pressure is often a critical component to understanding the physics of these experiments. Although VIsAR can provide a precise measurement of a flyer's surface velocity, the real challenge of this diagnostic implementation is using this velocity to unfold the timedependent pressure. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate a new method for quickly and reliably unfolding VIsAR data.

This article proposes a new way of viewing Republican-era warlords. Through an examination of the life ofLi Dequan, the second wife of warlord Feng Yuxiang, it displaces Feng from his typical military and political context, scrutinizing instead the ways that Feng and Li interwove the private intimacies of love, marriage, and family life into their public and political lives. In the Republic, Feng and Li, like many prominent figures of the time, shared elements of their private lives with journalists and, through them, a broader reading public, posing for photographs with their children on their way to school and inviting reporters to family events. Feng and Li utilized this newfound intimacy between public and political leaders to cultivate public sympathy and support. By the early PRC, Li--following Feng＇s sudden 1948 death--was named the first Minister of Health of the People＇s Republic of China and her roles as wife and romantic object fell away. Instead, she focused on mothering the nation. By the late twentieth century, emphasis on the Li and Feng romance reappeared in writings about the couple, and while these narratives drew on the Republican-era stories, it was made to seem that Li＇s feminism rather than Feng＇s modernity had facilitated their true love. Though the warlords have often been seen as destructive, exploring Feng＇s and Li＇s lives demonstrates that factional militarists and their families contributed to a new political culture grounded in a gendered national narrative that merewrite family and nation.

Background:The isometric steady-state following active lengthening is associated with greater torque production and lower activation,as measured by electromyographic activity(EMG),in comparison with a purely isometric contraction(IsO)at the same joint *** phenomenon is termed residual force enhancement(RFE).While there has been a great deal of research investigating the basic mechanisms of RFE,little work has been performed to understand the everyday relevance of *** purpose of this study was to investigate whether neuromuscular control strategies differ between IsO and RFE by measuring torque steadiness of the human ankle plantar ***:Following IsO maximal voluntary contractions in 12 males(25±4 years),an active lengthening contraction was performed at 15°/s over a 30°ankle excursion,ending at the same joint angle as IsO(5°dorsiflexion;RFE).surface EMG of the tibialis anterior and soleus muscles was recorded during all *** steadiness was determined as the standard deviation(sD)and coefficient of variation(CV)of the torque trace in the IsO and RFE condition during activation-matching(20%and 60%integrated EMG)and torque-matching(20%and 60%maximal voluntary contraction)***-tailed,paired t tests were used,within subjects,to determine the presence of RFE/activation reduction(AR)and whether there was a difference in torque steadiness between IsO and RFE ***:During the maximal and submaximal conditions,there was 5%-9%RFE with a 9%-11%AR(pspectively,with no difference in antagonist coactivation between RFE and IsO(p>0.05).There were no differences in sD and CV of the torque trace for the 20%and60%activation-matching or the 60%and maximal torque-matching trials in either the RFE or IsO condition(p>0.05).During the 20%torquematching trial,there were～37%higher values for sD and CV in the RFE as compared with the IsO condition(psignificant moderate-to-strong negative relationship was identified between

Based on “locality” considerations, John stuart Bell and his followers have derived inequalities and theorems that, when taken together with actual experiments that have been performed by Aspect and others, appear to contradict physical reality as defined by Einstein. However, their specifically applied concept of locality is in conflict with the Fundamental Model of probability theory and the set theoretic definition of conditional probabilities. Bell-type inequalities are, therefore, not adequate to decide ponderous questions regarding physical reality.

This study aimed to understand bark thickness variations of Araucaria angustifolia(Bertol.)Kuntze trees growing in natural forest remnants in southern Brazil,and their relationship with quantitative and qualitative *** thickness must be accurately estimated in order to determine timber volume *** is an important variable for the sustainable management and conservation of araucaria *** spite of its importance and visibility,bark thickness variations have not been evaluated for this key species in southern Brazil.A total of 104 trees were selected,and their qualitative and quantitative attributes such as diameter at breast height(D_(BH)),height(H),crown base height(C_(BH)),crown length(C_(L)),social position(s_(P)),stoniness(s_(T)),position on the relief(P_(R)),vitality(V_T)and branch arrangement(B_(A))were *** trees were categorized into two groups:red bark or gray *** analysis and artificial neural networks(ANN)were used for modelling bark *** results indicate that:(1)bark thickness showed good correlation to D_(BH),with 0.76 as coefficient of determination(Rs_P),0.540 as Mean Absolute Error(M_(AE))and 22.4 root-meansquare error in percentage(R_(MsE%));(2)the trend changed according to bark colour,with significant differences for the intersection(_0–Pr>F:p=0.0124)and slope(β_(1)–Pr>F:p=0.0126)of bark thickness curves between groups;(3)the highest correlation of bark thickness was found with:D_(BH)(ρ=0.88),H(ρ=0.58),C_(BH)(ρ=0.46),s_(P)(ρ=-0.52),and B_(A)(ρ=-0.32);(4)modelling with ANN confirmed high adjustment(R^(2)=0.99)and accuracy(R_(MsE%)=3.0)of the *** is an efficient and robust technique for the modelling of various qualitative and quantitative attributes commonly used in forest *** effective use of ANN to estimate araucaria bark in natural forests reinforces its potential,besides the possibility of application for other forest species.

What Do Bell-Tests Prove? A Detailed Critique of Clauser-Horne-shimony-Holt Including Counterexamples

Many future directions of scientific endeavors depend on quantum theory and the precise interpretation and significance of the entanglement of quantum-particles. This interpretation depends in turn on the physical meaning of so called Bell-tests that are mostly performed using entangled photons and randomly switched polarizers to measure their polarization at distant locations. This paper presents a detailed critique of the well known theory of Bell tests given by Clauser-Horne-shimony-Holt (CHsH). It is demonstrated that several important steps of the CHsH derivations contain serious inaccuracies of the underlying physics and probability theory and even a calculus error. As a consequence, the Bell-CHsH theory cannot be used to demonstrate extreme and opposite interpretations of entanglement such as super-luminal influences or alternatively super-determinism that cast aspersions on Einstein’s concepts of locality and separability.

J. s. Bell’s well-known proofs of inequalities (and related work) are shown to be invalidated by two counter-arguments (-examples) that are based on Einstein-local propositions: Bell-type inequalities of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen experiments must include, as virtually all physical theories do, elements of physical reality and their mathematical representations that relate to continua as opposed to exclusively finite numbers. Furthermore, Bell-type inequalities must be valid for all possible experimental geometries that lead to the quantum result. Based on these propositions, violations of Bell-type inequalities are demonstrated without violating Einstein locality, without conspiracy type theories and even for the case that all known “loopholes” are closed.

We briefly review the various proposed scenarios that may lead to nonthermal radio emissions from exoplanetary systems(planetary magnetospheres, magnetosphere-ionosphere and magnetospheresatellite coupling, and star-planet interactions), and the physical information that can be drawn from their detection. The latter scenario is especially favorable to the production of radio emission above 70 MHz. We summarize the results of past and recent radio searches, and then discuss FAsT characteristics and observation strategy, including synergies. We emphasize the importance of polarization measurements and a high duty-cycle for the very weak targets that radio-exoplanets prove to be.
