In this paper, the effects of refractive index (RI) of surrounding medium and ambient temperature on the transmission characteristics of a long period grating (LPG) are experimentally analyzed. the spectral behavior of LPG is investigated when the ambient index is higher or lower than that of the cladding material. the results show that the refractive index sensitivity of lower order attenuation bands is very low compared with that of the highest order attenuation band. But in the case of temperature, the lower order attenuation bands of the LPG can also exhibit good sensitivity like the higher-order bands.

An overview of the Czech national R&D project HiLAsE(High average power pulsed laser) is presented. the project focuses on the development of advanced high repetition rate, diode pumped solid state laser(DPssL) systems with energies in the range from mj to 100 j and repetition rates in the range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. some applications of these lasers in research and hi-tech industry are also presented.

background:It remains unclear if the vascular and connective tissue structures of primary and metastatic tumors are intrinsically determined or whether these characteristics are defined by the host *** we examined the microanatomical steps of vasculature and connective tissue development of C38 colon carcinoma in different ***:tumors produced in mice at five different locations(the cecal wall,skin,liver,lung,and brain)were ana-lyzed using fluorescent immunohistochemistry,electron microscopy and quantitative real-time polymerase chain ***:We found that in the cecal wall,skin,liver,and lung,resident fibroblasts differentiate into collagenous matrix-producing myofibroblasts at the tumor *** activated fibroblasts together with the produced matrix were incorporated by the *** connective tissue development culminated in the appearance of intratumoral tissue columns(centrally located single microvessels embedded in connective tissue and smooth muscle actin-expressing myofibroblasts surrounded by basement membrane).Conversely,in the brain(which lacks fibroblasts),C38 metasta-ses only induced the development of vascularized desmoplastic tissue columns when the growing tumor reached the fibroblast-containing ***:Our data suggest that the desmoplastic host tissue response is induced by tumor-derived fibrogenic molecules acting on host tissue *** concluded that not only the host tissue characteristics but also the tumor-derived fibrogenic signals determine the vascular and connective tissue structure of tumors.

In this paper,we report on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of the nano structured baordered phases of rare-earth manganites obtained from the optimally doped solid solutions Ln0.70ba0.30MnO3(Ln=Pr,Nd).the materials were studied by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive spectroscopy and sQUID-magnetometry *** is found that states with different degrees of cation ordering in the A-sublattice of the ABO3 perovskite can be obtained by employing special conditions of chemical *** particular,reduction of the parent compounds results in the formation of a nanocomposite containing ferrimagnetic anion-deficient ordered phase *** of the composite does not change an average size of the nanocrystallites,but drastically alters their phase composition to stabilize ferromagnetic stoichiometric ordered phase LnbaMn2O6 and ferromagnetic superstoichiometric disordered phase Ln0.90ba0.10MnO3+δ.It is shown that the magnetic properties of the materials are determined by the joint action of chemical(cation ordering)and external(surface tension)pressures.

Materials that undergo a reversible change of crystal structure through martensitic transformation （Mt） possess unusual functionalities including shape memory, superelasticity, and low/negative thermal ex- pansion. these properties have many advanced applications, such as actuators, sensors, and energy conversion, but are limited typically in a narrow temperature range of tens of Kelvin. Here we report that, by creating a nano-scale concentration modulation via phase separation, the Mt can be rendered continuous by an in-situ elastic confinement mechanism. through a model titanium alloy, we demon- strate that the elastically confined continuous Mt has unprecedented properties, such as superelasticity from below 4.2 K to 500 K, fully tunable and stable thermal expansion, from positive, through zero, to negative, from below 4.2 K to 573 K, and high strength-to-modulus ratio across a wide temperature range. the elastic tuning on the Mt, together with a significant extension of the crystal stability limit, provides new opportunities to explore advanced materials.

AIM:to develop and validate a case definition of eosinophilic esophagitis(EoE) in the linked Danish health ***:For case definition development,we queried the Danish medical registries from 2006-2007 to identify candidate cases of EoE in Northern *** International Classification of Diseases-10(ICD-10) and prescription codes were obtained,and archived pathology slides were obtained and re-reviewed to determine case *** used an iterative process to select inclusion/exclusion codes,refine the case definition,and optimize sensitivity and *** then re-queried the registries from 2008-2009 to yield a validation *** case definition algorithm was applied,and sensitivity and specificity were ***:Of the 51 and 49 candidate cases identified in both the development and validation sets,21 and 24 had EoE,*** of EoE cases in the development set [mean age 35 years;76% male;86% dysphagia;103 eosinophils per high-power field(eos/hpf)] were similar to those in the validation set(mean age 42 years;83% male;67% dysphagia;77 eos/hpf).Re-review of archived slides confirmed that the pathology coding for esophageal eosinophilia was correct in greater than 90% of *** registrybased case algorithms based on pathology,ICD-10,and pharmacy codes were successfully generated in the development set,one that was sensitive(90%) and one that was specific(97%).When these algorithms were applied to the validation set,they remained sensitive(88%) and specific(96%).CONCLUsION:two registry-based definitions,one highly sensitive and one highly specific,were developed and validated for the linked Danish national health databases,making future population-based studies feasible.

A model for the petrogenetic affinity and original geotectonic setting of ortho-amphibolites from the Obudu Plateau was tested using the distribution patterns of trace and rare-earth elements from the geochemical analyses of twelve representative amphibolite samples. Discrimination plots, normalized patterns of the incompatible trace elements against average MORB, low ratios of ba/Nb (9–23) and ba/ta (130–327) and other geochemical characteristics suggest that the protoliths were dominantly of tholeiitic MORB composition. the values of the ratios of La/ta (8.13–10.8), Rb/sr (0.04–0.07), th/U (mainly 4.43–5.43) and Hf/ta (2.35–2.88) further indicate that the ortho-amphibolites demonstrate E-type MORB characteristics. these features are related to substantial ocean floor divergent tectonic boundary setting rather than marginal basin tectonic setting. this evolutionary pattern appears to be controlled by limited progressive partial melting and fractional crystallization of a single mantle source region, irrespective, however, of variations due to local source heterogeneities. the tholeiitic magmas were most probably generated by hotspot activities on the constructive plate margins and subsequently modified by subduction-related low-K tholeiitic chemistry due to narrowing of a proto oceanic basin between the West African craton and eastern sahara plate. A likely model, therefore, is that the amphibolites of the Obudu Plateau represent ophiolitic suites with characteristics of enriched mid-ocean floor tholeiites, which were deformed and metamorphosed during a reversed plate motion involving subduction and collision within the Obudu Plateau in the Pan-African orogenic episode.

A gabbro-diorite plutonic complex from the southeast Obudu Plateau, representing limited volumes of magma, was studied for its trace and rare-earth element characteristics, in an attempt to document its genetic and geodynamic history. Geochemical studies indicate that the gabbro samples are characterized by variable concentrations and low averages of such index elements as Cr (40×10-6–200×10-6; av. 80×10-6), Ni (40×10-6–170×10-6; 53.33×10-6) and Zr (110×10-6–240×10-6; 116.67×10-6); variable and high averages of Rb (3×10-6–270×10-6; 80.67×10-6), sr (181×10-6–1610×10-6; 628.17×10-6) and U (0.14×10-6–3.46×10-6; 1.51×10-6), and fairly uniform Co (34×10-6–49×10-6; 36.33×10-6) and sc (23×10-6–39×10-6; 34.5×10-6), while the diorite samples exhibit higher trace element compositions. the range of REE contents and distinctive chondrite-normalized patterns indicate moderate fractionation with slight positive Eu anomaly in the diorites to very low fractionation with flat patterns and slight positive Eu anomaly in the gabbros. However, the general element systematics of the samples, especially LILE (ba, Rb, sr, Cs and Pb), HFsE (Zr, th, U, Hf, Mo, W, Nb and sn), relatively immobile elements (Zr, Ni, Cr) and REE, suggests a differentiation model, involving fractional crystallization of olivine and clinopyroxene from a partial melt generated beneath an island arc complex. A possible model for the complex is therefore an island arc setting, the development of which was dominated by calc-alkaline magmatism across the Obudu Plateau.

this paper presents a preliminary assessment of the hydrogeological characteristics of a karst mountainous catchment, the suoi Muoi River catchment, in the northwest of vietnam. the catchment is located at 600–700 m a.s.l. and covers an area of 284 km. Exposed limestone occupies 32% of the total catchment area. various types of assessments have been carried out, including geological and hydrogeological field surveys, cave surveys, dye-tracer tests, meteorological and surface water monitoring. Geological studies and cave surveys have identified the most important active cave/conduit systems within the catchment. Although these data are essential, they are insufficient to make a comprehensive appraisal of the hydrologic nature of the catchment under interest. An attempt was made to calculate a global water balance of the catchment, based on short-term (15 months) meteorological and streamflow records. the results show that, despite the existence of a number of substantial cavern conduit systems, the groundwater system of the catchment is governed by the fracture/fissure matrix. the cavern conduit systems only collect groundwater from the adjacent fracture matrix and/or connect topographically isolated surface watercourses. the groundwater storage of the cavern conduit systems appears to be regionally insignificant in comparison with the governed fracture matrix groundwater system.
