People in Japan reacted to the bewilderment they felt at the fall of Ming by creating a bifurcated view of China, evident in encyclopedias and gazeteers： On the one hand, there was the traditional China represented by the Ming; on the other, there was the new China ruled by the Dattan or the Tatars. such was the power of the Ming as an image that it endured in Japanese literature and theater for centuries after its fall. This article explores the preservation in popular discourse of the Ming as the most natural representation of China, focusing on Chikamatsu Monzaemon＇s hit jrruri play The Battles of Coxinga （Kokusen＇ya kassen）, first staged in 1715 and produced many times after that, showing how the political turmoil was filtered through both misunderstandings and creative fabrications. It shows that The Battles of Coxinga creates a fantastic image of China, as opposed to the barbaric Dattan, by drawing on historical memories internal to Japan and readily available images of foreignness. I argue that the preservation of the Ming in popular theater offered audiences a means of rethinking Japan＇s position as the inheritor of a ＂universal＂ Chinese essence in an age when knowledge of the world was being dramatically expanded by imported European cartography, complicating earlier views of a world centered on the Three Realms or the sinocentric world order.

In the outer periclinal cytoplasm of leaf epidermal cells of an aquatic angiosperm Vallisneria, blue light induces ＂chloroplast de-anchoring＂, a rapid decline in the resistance of chloroplasts against centrifugal force. Chloroplast de- anchoring is known induced within lmin of irradiation with high-fluence-rate blue light specifically, preceding the com- mencement of chloroplasts migration toward the anticlinal cytoplasm. However, its regulatory mechanism has remained elusive, although pharmacological analysis suggested that a calcium release from intracellular calcium stores is necessary for the response, in search of the responsible photoreceptors, immunoblotting analysis using antibodies against phototropins demonstrated that cross-reactive polypeptides of 120-kDa exist in the plasma-membrane fraction prepared from the leaves. In vitro phosphorylation analysis revealed that 120-kDa polypeptides were phosphorylated by exposure to blue light in a fluence-dependent manner. The blue-light-induced phosphorylation activity was sensitive to a ser/Thr kinase inhibitor, staurosporine, and unusually was retained at a high level for a long time in darkness. Furthermore, phototropin gene homologs （Vallisneria PHOTOTROPINI and PHOTOTROPIN2） expressed in leaves were isolated. We propose that calcium- regulated chloroplast de-anchoring, possibly mediated by phototropins, is an initial process of the blue-light-induced avoidance response of chloroplasts in Vallisneria.

Appropriate leaf positioning is essential for optimizing photosynthesis and plant growth. However, it has not been elucidated how green leaves reach and maintain their position for capturing light. We show here the regulation of leaf positioning under blue light stimuli. When 1-week-old Arabidopsis seedlings grown under white light were transferred to red light （25 i, mol m^-2 s^-1） for 5 d, new petioles that appeared were almost horizontal and their leaves were curled and slanted downward. However, when a weak blue light from above （0.1 i, mol m^-2 s^-1） was superimposed on red light, the new petioles grew obliquely upward and the leaves were flat and horizontal. The leaf positioning required both phototropinl （photl） and nonphototropic hypocotyl 3 （NPH3）, and resulted in enhanced plant growth. In an nph3 mutant, neither optimal leaf positioning nor leaf flattening by blue light was found, and blue light-induced growth enhancement was drastically reduced. When blue light was increased from 0.1 to 5 i, mol m^-2 s^-1, normal leaf positioning and leaf flattening were induced in both photl and nph3 mutants, suggesting that phot2 signaling became functional and that the signaling was independent of photl and NPH3 in these responses. When plants were irradiated with blue light （0.1 i, mol m^-2 s^- 1） from the side and red light from above, the new leaves became oriented toward the source of blue light. When we transferred these plants to both blue light and red light from above, the leaf surface changed its orientation to the new blue light source within a few hours, whereas the petioles initially were unchanged but then gradually rotated, suggesting the plasticity of leaf positioning in response to blue light. We showed the tissue expression of NPH3 and its plasma membrane localization via the coiled-coil domain and the C-terminal region. China＇s outward FDI has been increasing recently, as the country＇s policies over industrialization and national security change. Using financial data of 244 Chinese enterprises, this study empirically investigates the patterns and determinants of China＇s outward FDI from 2001 to 2008 for its seven major destinations. Tobit and multiple regression analyses indicate that early Chinese FDI in 2001 and 2002 is concentrated in the labor-intensive industries in Asia, like those of early Japanese FDI in the early 1970s as well as those of Korean FDI in 1990s. The results also indicate that non-production oriented manufacturers invested in North America, in order to seek for market cultivation, technological advance, R＆D skills, and name brands. We also found that the central state-owned enterprises are the key FDI players in the continents with locational disadvantages

Novel technologies have been necessary for improving fruit quality and productivity of citrus,labor-saving and orchard conservation on steep slope lands since aging of growers and decrease in the number of successors is remarkable in mountain areas of southwestern *** purpose of this paper is to introduce new technologies for improving citrus production that have been developed in recent years.A new fruit quality control system using drip irrigation and liquid fertilization technique combined with year-round plastic mulching was developed,and it enables high quality and stable citrus fruit *** and/or nutrient solution is automatically supplied through drip tubes that are laid under the mulching sheets to give adequate water stress,so as to improve sugar and acid content of fruit.A new transportation system for steep sloping citrus orchards,which is a combination of the monorail system and contour narrow paths,was suggested.A small walking cultivator was developed to explain the procedure of narrow path *** introducing the narrow path,working hours for fertilizer and chemical herbicide application were *** prevention mapping of citrus orchards on slope lands was developed based on computer-aided seepage estimation and topographic *** mapping can show zones of both ascending flow and descending flow of underground water during heavy rains in citrus *** mapping is considered to be effective for the management of orchards and prevention of erosion on slope lands.

To find out the most appropriate management,clinical features of 18 cases of adult multisystem langerhans cell histiocytosis(LCH) have been analyzed. The patients comprising of 9 males and 9 females were median age of 36 years,ranging from 18-53 years at diagnosis. Regarding the initial symptoms,7 patients(2 males and 5 females) showed central diabetes insipidus(CDI) and other endocrine symptoms with thickened pituitary stalk or a mass at the hypothalamic region. Additional 2 patients initiated the disease with CDI with no immediate diagnosis. In the remaining patients,the diseasebegun with single(n = 3) or multiple(n = 1) spinal bone lesion(s) in 4 patients(all males),with multiple bone lesions in 3 patients(1 male and 2 females),with single skull lesion in one female patient and with ambiguous symptoms including hypothyroidism in the remaining one male patient. We also recognized the correlation between pregnancy/childbirth and LCH in 4 patients. In terms of treatment,9 patients received systemic immuno-chemotherapy alone,of which the majority received vinblastine-based chemotherapy while 4 received 2-chlorodeoxyadenosine. Five had a combination of immuno-chemotherapy with surgical resection or radiotherapy,2 had immunotherapy alone,2 had surgical resection followed by observation alone to date. Three patients received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation after extensive chemotherapy. In terms of outcome,15 patients are alive(9 with active disease,6 without active disease),with a median of 66 mo(range 17-166 mo),two died of disease while the remaining 1 lost to follow-up. Based on these results,we think that early diagnosis and rapid introduction of appropriate treatment are essential,in order to overcome the problems relevant to adult LCH.

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of vitamin E treatment on liver stiffness in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD).METHODs: Thirty-eight NAFLD patients were administered vitamin E for > 1 year. The doses of vitamin E were 150, 300, or 600 mg; three times per day after each meal. Responses were assessed by liver enzyme levels [aspartate aminotransferase(AsT), alanine aminotranferease(ALT), and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase(γ-GTP)], noninvasive scoring systems of hepatic fibrosis-4 [FIB-4 index and aspartate aminotransferaseto-platelet index(APRI)], and liver stiffness [velocity of shear wave(Vs)] measured by acoustic radiation force impulse elastography. Vs measurements were performed at baseline and 12 mo after baseline. The patients were genotyped for the patatin-like phospholipase domain containing 3(PNPLA3) polymorphisms and then divided into either the CC/CG or GG group to examine each group's responses to vitamin E treatment. REsULTs: We found marked differences in the platelet count, serum albumin levels, alkaline phosphatase levels, FIB-4 index, APRI, and Vs at baseline depending on the PNPLA3 polymorphism. AsT, ALT, and γ-GTP levels(all P s(P significantly decreased from baseline to 12 mo in the analysis of all patients. In the subset analyses of PNPLA3 genotypes, AsT levels(P = 0.011), ALT levels(P s(P = 0.005), APRI(P = 0.036), and Vs(P = 0.029) in genotype GG patients significantly improved, and AsT and ALT levels(both P s(P = 0.003), FIB-4 index(P = 0.017), and APRI(P s. CONCLUsION: One year of vitamin E treatment improved noninvasive fibrosis scores and liver stiffness in NAFLD patients. The responses were similar between different PNPLA3 genotypes.
