Development of gradient boosting-assisted machine learning data-driven model for free chlorine residual prediction

Chlorine-based disinfection is ubiquitous in conventional drinking water treatment (DWT) and serves to mitigate threats of acute microbial disease caused by pathogens that may be present in source water. An important index of disinfection efficiency is the free chlorine residual (FCr), a regulated disinfection parameter in the Us that indirectly measures disinfectant power for prevention of microbial recontamination during DWT and distribution. This work demonstrates how machine learning (ML) can be implemented to improve FCr forecasting when supplied with water quality data from a real, full-scale chlorine disinfection system in Georgia, UsA. More precisely, a gradient-boosting ML method (CatBoost) was developed from a full year of DWT plant-generated chlorine disinfection data, including water quality parameters (e.g., temperature, turbidity, pH) and operational process data (e.g., flowrates), to predict FCr. Four gradient-boosting models were implemented, with the highest performance achieving a coefficient of determination, r2, of 0.937. Values that provide explanations using shapley’s additive method were used to interpret the model’s results, uncovering that standard DWT operating parameters, although non-intuitive and theoretically non-causal, vastly improved prediction performance. These results provide a base case for data-driven DWT disinfection supervision and suggest process monitoring methods to provide better information to plant operators for implementation of safe chlorine dosing to maintain optimum FCr.

The intrinsic synchronization, multi-color outputs and related carrier-envelope phases (CEP) among pulses bring advantages to synchronously pumped femtosecond optical parametric oscillators and the pumping sources for broadband frequency comb generation and ultrashort waveform coherent syn-thesis. In this paper, we discuss our latest research results in this field, which cover the following as-pects: the phase relationship and energy conservation law in an OPO and related experimental verifi-cation; control of the pumping Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser's CEP by self-referencing technology, and its repetition-rate locking by piezoelectric transducer (PZT); CEP locking of the pulses from the OPO by beating the non-phase-matched visible outputs against pump supercontinuum to obtain a driving signal for a fast PZT on the OPO end mirror; the generation of a broadband frequency comb spanning from 400 nm to 2.4 μm with 1.2 kHz bandwidth; and the realization of coherent interference between phase controlled pump pulses and signal second harmonic pulses.

Insecticide resistance is a major obstacle to the management of diseasevectoring mosquitoes worldwide. The genetic changes and detoxification genes involved in insecticide resistance have been extensively studied in populations of insecticide-resistant mosquitoes, however few studies have focused on the resistance genes upregulated upon insecticide exposure and the possible regulation pathways involved in insecticide resis- tance. To characterize the changes in gene expression during insecticide exposure, and to investigate the possible connection of known regulation pathways with insecticide resistance, we conducted rNA-seq analysis of a highly permethrin-resistant strain of Culex quinquefasciatus following pcrmethrin exposure. Gene expression profiles revealed a total of 224 upregulated and 146 downregulated genes when compared to a blank acetone carrier treated control, respectively, suggesting that there were multiple, but specific genes involved in permethrin resistance. Functional enrichment analysis showed that the upregulated genes contained multiple detoxification genes including a glutathione s-transferase and multiple eytochrome P450 genes, as well as several immune-related genes, while the downregulated genes consisted primarily of proteases and carbohydrate metabolism and transport. Further analysis showed that permethrin exposure resulted in a decrease in the expression of serum storage proteins and likely represented a delay in the development of the fourth instar possibly due to a decrease in feeding. This effect was more pronounced in an insecticide-resistant strain than in an insecticide-susceptible strain and may represent a behavioral mechanism of insecticide resistance in Culex mosquitoes.

The Tongariro Power Development scheme（TPDs） is used to regulate flow in the headwaters of the largest catchment on the North Island of New Zealand（the Waikato）.Two small dams,the rangipo Dam and the Poutu Intake Dam,were constructed in 1973 and *** flow regime of the river is managed to divert freshes into the power scheme,but allows flows larger than 100 m;s;to be released,to rework and transport sediment through the catchment. Analysis of aerial photos and maps spanning 1928 to 2007,alongside field measurements,show that there have been few hydrogeomorphic adjustments since dam *** includes limited changes to channel geometry,channel planform and bed material organization immediately downstream of the *** addition,offsite effects are minimal, both 500 m downstream of each dam,and in the more sensitive,less confined reaches in the lower catchment（11 km downstream of the Poutu Intake dam）.The limited changes can be attributed to the locations of the dams within reaches characterised by bedrock gorges and confined within *** locations act to flush sediments and impose margins that allow minimal adjustment of the *** material within this reach is characterised by the presence of a boulder *** is sourced from long-term incision into lahar deposits,and acts to limit the rate of incision, creating a steep and stable base upon which active fractions are *** as importantly,significant storage in the low-relief volcanic plateau located in the upper catchment acts to disconnect and store the high sediment yields generated by active volcanic cones in the western sub-catchment upstream of the *** limits the rate of sediment supply to regulated *** from this study show that analysis of reach-scale controls is essential in framing dam site locations in relation to the distribution of reaches and landscape units across the *** this instance, tributary inputs downstream of the dams do not repl

The normal growth and development of the skull is a tightly regulated process that occurs along the osteogenic interfaces of the cranial ***,the borders of the calvarial bones and neighboring tissues above and below,function as a *** coordinated remodeling efforts of bone deposition and resorption,the cranial sutures maintain a state of patency from infancy through early adulthood as the skull continues to grow and accommodate the developing brain’s demands for ***,when this delicate balance is disturbed,a number of pathologic conditions ensue;and if left uncorrected,may result in visual and neurocognitive impairments.A prime example includes craniosynostosis,or premature fusion of one or more cranial and/or facial suture(s).At the present time,the only therapeutic measure for craniosynostosis is surgical correction by cranial vault ***,elegant studies performed over the past decade have identified several genes critical for the maintenance of suture patency and induction of suture *** deeper understandings of the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms that regulate suture biology may provide necessary insights toward the development of non-surgical therapeutic alternatives for patients with cranial suture *** this review,we discuss the intricate cellular and molecular interplay that exists within the suture among its three major components:dura mater,osteoblastic related molecular pathways and osteoclastic related molecular pathways.

Tracking the Cretaceous transcontinental Ceduna river through Australia:The hafnium isotope record of detrital zircons from offshore southern Australia

The middle-upper Cretaceous Ceduna river system traversed continental Australia from the NE coast to the centre of the southern coast. At its mouth, it formed a vast delta system that is similar in scale to the Niger delta of West Africa. The delta system is composed of two main lobes that represent different phases of delta construction. A recent hypothesis has challenged the traditional idea that both lobes of the delta were derived from a transcontinental river system by suggesting that the upper lobe （santonian -Maastrichtian） is instead derived from a restricted catchment within southern Australia. Hf isotopic data presented here fingerprint the original source of the upper delta lobe zircons to NE Australia, with data comparing well with similar U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopic data from the Lachlan Orogen, the New England Orogen, the eastern Musgraves Province and the northern Flinders ranges. These data do not preclude a model where the lobe is derived from recycled Eromanga Basin sediments during a phase of late Cretaceous inland Australian uplift, but when coupled with reconnaissance low-temperature thermochronometry from the region of the Ceduna river course indicating widespread Triassic-Jurassic exhumation, and comparisons with detrital zircon data from the Winton Formation upstream of any proposed uplift, we suggest that both lobes of the Ceduna Delta are likely to be derived from a transcontinental Ceduna river.
