Feasibility of using electrokinetics and nanomaterials to stabilize and improve collapsible soils

Loess as a subcategory of collapsible soils is a well-known aeolian deposit generally characterized as a highly-porous medium with relatively low natural density and water content and a high percentage of fine-grained *** collapsible soil sustains large stresses under a dry condition with natural water ***,it can experience high and relatively sudden decreases in its volume once it reaches a certain water content under a certain load and therefore,the natural condition of the soil might not be suitable for construction if the possibility of the exposure of the soil to excessive water exists during the lifetime of the *** research presents the utilization of an innovative method for stabilization and improvement of Gorgan loessial *** method uses electrokinetics and nanomaterials to instigate additives to move through soil pores,as an in situ remedial *** assess the acceptability of this measure,the deformability and strength characteristics of the improved collapsible soil are measured and compared with those of the unimproved soil,implementing several unsaturated oedometer tests under constant vertical stress and varying matric *** result emphasizes the importance of the matric suction on the behavior of both improved and unimproved *** test results indicate that the resistance of the soil was highly dependent on the water content and matric suction of the *** oedometer tests on samples improved by 3%lime and 5%nanomaterials show considerable improvement of the collapse *** also reveal that stabilized samples experience notably lower volume decrease under the same applied stresses.

Effects of non-liquefiable crust layer and superstructure mass on the response of 2×2 pile groups to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading

In this research,two shake table experiments were conducted to study the effects of non-liquefiable crust layer and superstructure mass on the responses of two sets of 22 pile groups to liquefactioninduced lateral *** this regard,an inclined base layer overlain by a very loose liquefiable layer was constructed in both models;while only in one model,a non-liquefiable crust layer was built.A lumped mass,being representative of a superstructure,was attached to the cap of one pile group in both *** models were fully instrumented with various sensors,including acceleration,displacement,and pore water pressure ***,the piles were instrumented with pair strain gauges to measure pure bending moments induced by cyclic and monotonic loadings associated with ground shaking and lateral spreading,*** results showed that the existence of the non-liquefiable crust layer increases both the maximum and residual soil displacements at the free field and also the maximum bending moments in the *** results of the experiments indicated that the crust layer induces a high kinematic lateral soil pressure and force on the piles which are not present in the crustless *** crust layer increases the pile cap displacement before liquefaction,albeit decreases it after liquefaction,due to the elastic rebound of the piles in the liquefiable *** crust layer postpones both liquefaction triggering and dissipation of excess pore water *** existence of the superstructure mass on the pile caps decreases the acceleration amplitude of the pile caps,while increases their maximum displacement.

Evaluation of behaviors of earth and rockfill dams during construction and initial impounding using instrumentation data and numerical modeling

In this study,the behavior of Gavoshan dam was evaluated during construction and the first impounding.A two-dimensional（2D） numerical analysis was conducted based on a finite difference method on the largest cross-section of the dam using the results of instrument measurements and back *** evaluations will be completed in the case that back analysis is carried out in order to control the degree of the accuracy and the level of confidence of the measured behavior since each of the measurements could be controlled by comparing it to the result obtained from the numerical *** that,by comparing the results of the numerical analysis with the measured values,it is indicated that there is a proper consistency between these two ***,it was observed that the dam performance was suitable regarding the induced pore water pressure,the pore water pressure ratio r;,settlement,induced stresses,arching degree,and hydraulic fracturing probability during the construction and initial impounding *** results demonstrated that the maximum settlement of the core was 238 cm at the end of *** the following 6 years after construction（initial impounding and exploitation period）,the accumulative settlement of the dam was 270 *** is clear that 88% of the total settlement of the dam took place during dam *** reason is that the clay core was smashed in the wet side,*** optimum moisture *** the average curving ratio was 0.64 during dam construction; at the end of the initial impounding,the maximum amount of curving ratio in the upstream was 0.81,and the minimum（critical） amount in the downstream was *** was also concluded that this dam is safe in comparison with the behaviors of other similar dams in the world.

VANET Jamming and Adversarial Attack Defense for Autonomous Vehicle safety

The development of Vehicular Ad-hoc Network(VANET)technology is helping Intelligent Transportation system(ITs)services to become a *** can use VANETs to communicate safety messages on the road(while driving)and can inform their location and share road condition information in ***,intentional and unintentional(e.g.,packet/frame collision)wireless signal jamming can occur,which will degrade the quality of communication over the channel,preventing the reception of safety messages,and thereby posing a safety hazard to the vehicle’s *** this paper,VANET jamming detection applying support Vector Machine(sVM)machine learning technology is used to classify jamming and non-jamming *** analysis is based on two cases which include normal traffic and heavy traffic conditions,where the results show that the probability of packet dropping will increase when many vehicles are using the wireless channel *** using sVM classification,the most appropriate feature set applied in determining a jamming situation shows an accuracy of 98%or ***,more advanced jamming attacks need to be considered for preparation of more reliable and safer autonomous ITs *** research can use vehicular communication transmission and reception data based on selected published *** this paper,an additional adversarial defense algorithm using the Density-Based spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise(DBsCAN)method is proposed,which assumes that evolutionary attacks of the jammer will attempt to confuse the trained *** simulation results show that applying DBsCAN can improve the accuracy by elimination of outliers before conducting classification testing.

Fracture analyses of different pre-holed concrete specimens under compression

Crack propagation processes in specially prepared concrete discs and rectangular specimens containing a single cylindrical hole or multiple holes of varying diameters have been studied both experimentally and numerically. In this research, the cracks coalescence paths in Brazilian disc and rectangular specimens made from rock-like material containing multi-holes are investigated. These concrete specimens are specially prepared from an appropriate mixture of Portland Pozzolana Cement （PPC）, fine sands, and water. The pre-holed Brazilian discs and rectangular specimens are experimentally tested under compression. The breakage load in the ring type disc specimens containing an axial hole with varying diameters is measured and the distribution of the induced lateral stress is obtained. The mechanism of cracks propagation in the wall of the ring type specimens is also stud- ied. In the case of multi-hole Brazilian disc and rectangular specimens, the cracks propagation and cracks coalescence are also investigated. These experiments are numerically modeled by a modified higher order displacement discontinuity method. It has been shown that the corresponding experimental and numerical results are in good agreement with each other. The results presented in this research vali date the accuracy and applicability of these crack analyses procedures.

A simultaneous experimental and numerical study of shear fracture of concrete-like materials is carried out using Brazilian disc specimens with initial double edge cracks and fourpoint bending beam specimens with double *** interference effects of two cracks/notches are investigated through varied ligament angles and crack *** is shown that shear fracturing paths change remarkably with the initial ligament angles and crack *** cracked specimens are numerically simulated by an indirect boundary element method.A comparison between the numerical results and the experimental ones shows good agreement.

The buckling resisting brace(BRB)is an efficient system against lateral loads that enjoy high seismic energy absorption *** desirable behavior of BRBs has been confirmed,the stiffness of the system is not desirable that it can be compensated by changing the configuration of BRB *** so doing,the configuration in the form of double K(DK)is investigated to achieve more favorable ***,the required mathematical formulas were proposed to design the *** of DK system with other conventional BRB showed that the DK system has a better structural performance and is more economical(due to needing less core area)than other conventional *** results indicated that the DK system increases the lateral ultimate strength,lateral nonlinear stiffness,and energy ***,the DK configuration reduces the axial forces created in columns in the nonlinear *** material demand,created forces in the main frame,and also increasing of nonlinear stiffens by DK improve the structure’s safety.

A microscale optical implant for continuous in vivo monitoring of intraocular pressure

Intraocular pressure(IOP)is a key clinical parameter in glaucoma ***,despite the potential utility of daily measurements of IOP in the context of disease management,the necessary tools are currently lacking,and IOP is typically measured only a few times a *** we report on a microscale implantable sensor that could provide convenient,accurate,ondemand IOP monitoring in the home *** excited by broadband near-infrared(NIR)light from a tungsten bulb,the sensor’s optical cavity reflects a pressure-dependent resonance signature that can be converted to *** light is minimally absorbed by tissue and is not perceived *** sensor’s nanodot-enhanced cavity allows for a 3–5 cm readout distance with an average accuracy of 0.29 mm Hg over the range of 0–40 mm *** were mounted onto intraocular lenses or silicone haptics and secured inside the anterior chamber in New Zealand white *** sensors provided continuous in vivo tracking of short-term transient IOP elevations and provided continuous measurements of IOP for up to 4.5 months.
