Farmers'participatory selection of new rice varieties to boost production under temperate agro-ecosystems

In mountain agriculture, early maturity, high grain yield and high biomass are generally considered as farmer preferred traits in rice crop in addition to a multiple set of traits collectively responsible for variety adoption or rejection. The varieties tested only on station evaluation trials without taking the data from the farmers＇ fields by not including farmers as partners for variety evaluation are the reasons of low adoption of varieties. In this regard, a participatory methodology was followed by conducting a number of participatory trials in the farmers＇ fields during 2012-2014 in six districts of Kashmir Valley, India. The mother trials in the farmers＇ fields showed that the test variety sKUA-408 consistently and significantly out yielded Jhelum and farmers＇ variety followed by shalimar rice 3 （sR3）. The other released varieties like sR1 and sR2 could not perform nicely in the farmers＇ fields because of late maturity. After making the t-test comparison of baby trials （paired plots）, the mean yield superiority of test varieties sKUA-408, sR3, and sKUA-403 over farmers＇ variety during 2013 was around 23, 25, and 22％, respectively, whereas in 2014 the respective yield advantage was recorded as 16.3, 17.7, and 16.2％. In all districts, sKUA-408 and sR3 were significantly preferred by farmers （P〈0.05 or 0.01） in terms of pre-harvest traits namely, tillering ability and general phenotypic acceptability, early maturity and biomass and for post-harvest traits such as general cooking quality besides, the intention to grow the variety for next year. Adoption and dissemination of sKUA-408 began in 2014 from the farm-saved seed in the form of farmer to farmer seed exchange. Farmers are the end users of a variety so the decision by the farmers while judging the variety should be taken into consideration to make the varietal choice more effective for its widespread adoption.

An Implementation of Haar Wavelet Based Method for Numerical Treatment of Time-fractional schrdinger and Coupled schrdinger systems

The objective of this paper is to solve the timefractional schr¨odinger and coupled schr¨odinger differential equations(TFsE) with appropriate initial conditions by using the Haar wavelet approximation. For the most part, this endeavor is made to enlarge the pertinence of the Haar wavelet method to solve a coupled system of time-fractional partial differential equations. As a general rule, piecewise constant approximation of a function at different resolutions is presentational characteristic of Haar wavelet method through which it converts the differential equation into the sylvester equation that can be further simplified easily. study of the TFsE is theoretical and experimental research and it also helps in the development of automation science,physics, and engineering as well. Illustratively, several test problems are discussed to draw an effective conclusion, supported by the graphical and tabulated results of included examples, to reveal the proficiency and adaptability of the method.

Variations in OssPL10 confer drought tolerance by directly regulating OsNAC2 expression and ROs production in rice

Drought is a major factor restricting the production of rice(Oryza sativa L.).The identification of natural variants for drought stress-related genes is an important step toward developing genetically improved rice ***,we characterized a member of the sQUAMOsA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE(sPL)family,OssPL10,as a transcription factor involved in the regulation of drought tolerance in ***10 appears to play a vital role in drought tolerance by controlling reactive oxygen species(ROs)production and stomatal *** and allele frequency analyses of OssPL10 indicated that most upland rice and improved lowland rice varieties harbor the OssPL10Hap1allele,whereas the OssPL10Hap2allele was mainly present in lowland and landrace rice ***,we demonstrated that the varieties with the OssPL10Hap1allele showed low expression levels of OssPL10 and its downstream gene,OsNAC2,which decreases the expression of OsAP37 and increases the expression of OsCOX11,thus preventing ROs accumulation and programmed cell death(PCD).Furthermore,the knockdown or knockout of OssPL10 induced fast stomatal closure and prevented water loss,thereby improving drought tolerance in *** on these observations,we propose that OssPL10 confers drought tolerance by regulating OsNAC2 expression and that OssPL10Hap1could be a valuable haplotype for the genetic improvement of drought tolerance in rice.

Exact solutions for the flow of second grade fluid in annulus between torsionally oscillating cylinders

The velocity field and the associated shear stress corresponding to the torsional oscillatory flow of a second grade fluid, between two infinite coaxial circular cylinders, are determined by means of the Laplace and Hankel transforms. At time t = 0, the fluid and both the cylinders are at rest and at t = 0 ＋ , cylinders suddenly begin to oscillate around their common axis in a simple harmonic way having angular frequencies ω 1 and ω 2 . The obtained solutions satisfy the governing differential equation and all imposed initial and boundary conditions. The solutions for the motion between the cylinders, when one of them is at rest, can be obtained from our general solutions. Furthermore, the corresponding solutions for Newtonian fluid are also obtained as limiting cases of our general solutions.

DFT studies of thermoelectric properties of R-Au intermetallics at 300 K

Thermoelectric and electronic properties of cubic bi-intermetallics R-Au（R = Tb, Ho. Er. Tm and Yb）compounds were explored. Electronic properties i.e. density of states and band structure were computed using first principles calculations which proved the metallic nature of these compounds. Post-DFT（BoltzTraP） calculations were carried out to explore their thermoelectric properties like electrical conductivities. seebeck coefficient, electronic thermal conductivities and figure of merit. The highest seebeck coefficient and figure of merit were found for YbAu among these compounds which are 105 μV/K and 0.285 respectively. All the calculations were carried out at 300 K. Large values of figure of merit obtained for these compounds at room temperature indicate that these materials can be used for thermoelectric devices however need experimental verification.

INTERACTION OF POLYVINYLPYRROLIDONE WITH METAL CHLORIDE AQUEOUs sOLUTIONs

Interactions of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with metal chlorides (MgCl 2 , CaCl 2 , KCl and BaCl 2 ) have been investigated by viscometric and spectrophotometric techniques in aqueous solutions. Intrinsic viscosity [η] of (PVP) has shown a discontinuity with varying concentration of metal chlorides. The decreasing order of effectiveness of cation is K 1+ > Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ > Ba 2+ for poly(vinylpyrrolidone) solution. Changes in the absorption spectra of the cosolutes were observed in the presence of PVP in the lower limit of the UV-visible region i.e. 200-210 nm. These changes were attributed to interaction of PVP molecules with the cosolute molecules. As the concentration of the cosolute increased, a red shift in the peaks was observed, indicating an increase in interaction between PVP and cosolutes.
