Tribological performance of iron- and nickel-base self-lubricating claddings containing metal sulfides at high temperature

Iron-based coatings with the incorporation of solid lubricants have been prepared by means of laser cladding,in an effort to control friction and decrease tool wear at high temperatures during metal forming *** choice of a Fe-based powder has been considered advantageous,as it can lead to decreased costs compared to nickel-based claddings previously studied by the authors,in addition to having a lower environmental *** particular,the incorporation of transition metal dichalcogenides such as Mos_(2) as precursors leads to the encapsulation of silver in Fe-based self-lubricating claddings,resulting in a uniform distribution of the soft metal across the thickness of the *** tribological evaluation of the claddings at high temperatures shows that the addition of lubricious compounds leads to lower friction at room temperature and significantly decreased wear up to 600℃ compared to the unmodified iron-based reference alloy,although higher than similar self-lubricating Ni-based *** order to cast light into these observed differences,the corresponding microstructures,phase composition,and self-lubricating mechanisms have been studied and compared for Fe-and Ni-based claddings having both of them the addition of silver and Mos_(2).The results suggest a key role of the formation of protective tribolayers on the counter body during high temperature sliding *** simulation of the phase evolution during solidification reveals that the formation of different chromium-and nickel-based metal sulfides in Fe-and Ni-claddings during laser cladding by the decomposition of Mos_(2) plays a key role in determining their tribological behaviour at high temperatures.

New insights into the pathophysiology of achalasia and implications for future treatment

Idiopathic achalasia is an archetype esophageal motor disorder, causing significant impairment of eating ability and reducing quality of life. The pathophysiological underpinnings of this condition are loss of esophageal peristalsis and insufficient relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter(LEs). The clinical manifestations include dysphagia for both solids and liquids, regurgitation of esophageal contents, retrosternal chest pain, cough, aspiration, weight loss and heartburn. Even though idiopathic achalasia was first described more than 300 years ago, researchers are only now beginning to unravel its complex etiology and molecular pathology. The most recent findings indicate an autoimmune component, as suggested by the presence of circulating anti-myenteric plexus autoantibodies, and a genetic predisposition, as suggested by observed correlations with other well-defined genetic syndromes such as Allgrove syndrome and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 B syndrome. Viral agents(herpes, varicella zoster) have also been proposed as causative and promoting factors. Unfortunately, the therapeutic approaches available today do not resolve the causes of the disease, and only target the consequential changes to the involved tissues, such as destruction of the LEs, rather than restoring or modifying the underlying pathology. New therapies should aim to stop the disease at early stages, thereby preventing the consequential changes from developing and inhibiting permanent damage. This review focuses on the known characteristics of idiopathic achalasia that will help promote understanding its pathogenesis and improve therapeutic management to positively impact the patient's quality of life.

Biogeographic patterns of the myxomycete biota of the Americas using a parsimony analysis of endemicity

Myxomycetes are microorganisms frequently considered to be of cosmopolitan distribution,however as studies in unexplored areas have intensified,more information has become available on the patterns of distribution of these organisms,but no historical or cladistic biogeographic approaches have been applied to understand such *** this study a parsimony analysis of endemicity(PAE)was used in order to generate a preliminary hypothesis on the biogeographic relationships of 13 American areas in which a well-known myxomycete biota *** general terms the hypotheses of the relationship between the myxomycete assemblages of areas used in this study agree with those reported for other groups of *** appear to show that a historical-geographic pattern influences the distribution of myxomycetes as much as environmental *** main clades were found in the analysis,with the first one including the two subantarctic localities,the second one representing the south American transition zone and the last one including all the Neotropical and Nearctic areas,but arranged into two subclades,one with the arid areas and the other with the tropical and temperate humid *** clade or subclade in the cladogram is supported by the presence of several morphospecies,some of which appear to represent endemic species restricted to specific geographic *** results of this analysis are proposed as a working hypothesis that can perhaps be supported in the future with new data from other complementary regions of America or with more intense surveys in the areas already *** are inconsistent with the hypothesis of cosmopolitan distribution for these microorganisms,as they appear to indicate groups of species that are restricted to certain geographic areas,some of which may be endemic,such as those from the subantarctic forests of south America,those found exclusively in the south American arid areas or those that have been recently described from arid ar

AIM: To explore the association between TCF7L2 rs12255372 and rs7903146 single nucleotide polymorphisms (sNPs) and gastric cancer risk in Venezuelan ***: We performed a case-control study including 122 paraffin-embedded archived intestinal-type gastric cancer samples and 129 biopsies obtained by superior endoscopy from chronic gastritis patients. Gastric cancer samples were classified according the degree of carcinoma differentiation. Genomic DNA was extracted from tissues, and the two sNPs of TCF7L2 gene (rs12255372 and rs7903146) were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism reactions. Multiple regression analysis with adjustments for age and gender were performed and best-fitting models of inheritance were determined. statistic powers were post-hoc ***: After adjusting for age and sex the TCF7L2 rs7903146 TT genotype was associated with gastric cancer risk under the recessive genetic model (OR = 3.11, 95%CI: 1.22-7.92, P = 0.017). We further investigated the distribution of rs12255372 and rs7903146 genotypes according gastric cancer stratified by degree of differentiation, and we observed that carriers of rs7903146 T allele (CT + TT vs CC) had a significantly increased risk of moderate/well differentiated gastric cancer (dominant model, OR = 2.55, 95%CI: 1.35-4.80, P = 0.004), whereas the rs7903146 TT genotype was associated with poorly differentiated gastric cancer in the recessive model (OR = 3.65, 95%CI: 1.25-10.62, P = 0.018). We did not find association between rs12255372 sNP and the susceptibility of developing gastric ***: TCF7L2 rs7903146 polymorphism is associated with gastric cancer risk in the Venezuelan population, and could be related to determine the degree of differentiation of tumor cells.

Color pref ere nee cool versus warm in nursing homes depends on the expected activity for interior spaces

This study explores the color preferences of elderly residents of nursing homes based on the expected activities for different rooms,activity rooms,and bedrooms and compares the results with the arousal level induced by each *** experime nts were con ducted,one with elderly people living in nursing homes in the Valen cian Comm unity,and the other in a laboratory with virtual reality and physiological markers(i.e.,heart rate variability).I dlviduals assessed six colors in two groups of warm and *** demonstrate that preferences for warm and cool colors depend on the room *** the activity room,warm colors were preferred over the cool colors by both genders,fitting the higher arousal levels induced by warm versus cool *** the bedrooms,cool colors were preferred by both genders,fitting the lower arousal levels induced by cool colors in females and the other models that suggest a U-shaped relation between the arousal level and the visible spectra of ***,the color preferences for interior spaces in nursing homes depend on the room type and are related to the arousal level for the expected activity in them.

Effects of aeration on the suspended matter from a tropical and eutrophic estuary

A comprehensive understanding of the complex biogeochemical interactions between organic matter and persistent contaminants in the suspended matter is vital for ecoefficient estuary ***,little is known regarding aeration effects in suspended particulate ***,this study aimed to investigate the effects of aeration on the suspended matter from a Tropical and Eutrophic estuarine *** water with 60 g/L of suspended particulate matter(sPM)was collected from Guanabara Bay,Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,transferred to experimental boxes and aerated for 61 *** aggregates monitoring included abiotic variables measurements and,determination of total organic matter(TOM),biopolymers composition,bacterial activity,trace metals,and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)*** aeration enhanced dissolved oxygen(DO)concentration and the redox potential(Eh).However,from days 0 to 61 the predominant bacterial activities were denitrification and *** transport system activity increased after day 10,and aerobic activity was detected after day *** summary,aeration increased aerobic bacterial activity,lipids(LIP)and trace metal concentrations,although diminished protein/carbohydrate ratio and PAH *** metals concentration(Ni,Pb,Cu,Cr,Mn,and Fe)were the highest on day 19 when the p H was *** presented toxic values(Cu>20.0μg/g).The p H showed a strong negative correlation with Eh(r=-0.94;psystems with high loads of toxic trace metals is unsafe for ***,managers must be aware of the environmental and biological risks of introducing the aeration technique into a eutrophic marine environment.
