Experimental autoimmune orchids (EAO) induced in swiss mice could be reduced by means of the utilization of micronized frustules of fossil diatoms (Ds) containing 54% of siO2. Experimental mice were sensitized with testicular Antigen (Ag) in Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) inoculated twice, on day 0 and day 21. 100μg of Ds suspension was inoculated into sensitized mice 10 times, once every 4 days, subcutaneously, starting on day 7 after the first Ag inoculation. Mice receiving the Ds treatment showed a diminution of the delayed hypersensitivity reaction, lower antibody titer and decreased incidence of testicular injury as well as reduced grade and extension of the lesions. Possible explanation of these results would suggest alteration of monocyte and/or macrophage normal behaviour as well as alteration of antibody synthesis by different mechanisms.

Aims osmolytes,used for maintaining osmotic balance and as‘osmoprotectants’,are synthesized in plants as a general,con-served response to abiotic stress,although their contribution to stress-tolerance mechanisms remains ***,the most common osmolyte,accumulates in many plant species in parallel with increased external salinity and is considered a reliable bio-chemical marker of salt *** have measured proline levels in two halophytic,closely related Juncus species under laboratory and field conditions to assess the possible relevance of proline biosynthesis for salt tolerance and therefore for the ecology of these two *** Proline was quantified in plants treated with increasing NaCl con-centrations and in plants sampled in two salt marshes located in the provinces of Valencia and alicante,respectively,in southeast *** conductivity,pH,Na+and Cl−concentrations were measured in soil samples collected in parallel with the plant *** Findings Treatment with NaCl inhibited growth of *** plants in a concentration-dependent manner,but only under high salt conditions for *** treatments led to proline accumulation in both species,especially in the more salt-tolerant *** results,obtained under laboratory conditions,were confirmed in plants sam-pled in the *** all the samplings,proline contents were signifi-cantly lower in *** than in the more tolerant *** growing in the same *** direct correlation between soil salinity and proline levels could be established,but seasonal variations were detected,with increased proline contents under accentuated water deficit *** results suggest that proline biosynthesis is not only an induced,general response to salt stress but also an important contributing factor in the physiological mechanisms of salt tolerance in Juncus,and that it therefore correlates with the ecology of both species.

Different canopy characteristics of industrial eucalyptus may lead to differences in water evaporation and availability to *** study aims to understand rainfall partitioning in a young clonal plantation(age of 2-4.5 years)of three eucalyptus species by relating tree parameters:diameter at breast height,total height,and leaf area *** measured rainfall,throughfall,stemflow and litter interception,along with the tree *** eucalyptus trees had rainfall interception varying between 22 mm(for 178 mm of rainfall)and 42 mm(for 87 mm of te rainfall),throughfall between 106 mm(for 186 mm of rainfall)and 44 mm(for 74 mm of rainfall),and stemflow between 0.5 mm(for 92 mm of rainfall)and 1.4 mm(for 24 mm of rainfall).For the three species,rainfall interception varied between 12 and 48%,throughfall between 57 and 90%,and stemflow between 0.3 and 5.4%.The coefficient of determination between interception and rainfall was 0.76,indicating interception depends on other variables,possibly including antecedent rainfall,rainfall intensity,and *** decreased with a reduction in leaf area index caused by eucalyptus *** *** had 0.75 mm of throughfall per 1 mm of rainfall,whereas in *** and E saligna,these ratios were 0.71 and 0.68,*** in *** and *** had a higher positive relationship with the diameter at breast height of the trees,whereas in *** the highest relationship was with the *** results contribute to establishing management strategies,such as choosing suitable eucalyptus species to local climate,and to improve the synchronization of crop-demand versus soil-water-supply while maintaining streamflow to fulfill ecological and production needs.

AIM: To evaluate the nutritional status and its association with proinflammatory cytokines in children with chronic liver ***: We performed a cross-sectional study with 43 children and adolescents, aged 0 to 17 years, diagnosed with chronic liver disease. All patients regularly attended the Pediatric Hepatology Unit and were under nutritional follow up. The exclusion criteria were fever from any etiology at the time of enrollment, inborn errors of the metabolism and any chronic illness. The severity of liver disease was assessed by Child-Pugh, Model for End-stage Liver Disease(MELD) and Pediatric End stage Liver Disease(PELD) scores. Anthropometric parameters were height/age, body mass index/age and triceps skinfold/age according to World Health Organization standards. The cutoff points for nutritional status were risk of malnutrition(Z-score score sis factor-α levels were assessed by commercial ELIsA kits. For multivariate analysis, linear regression was applied to assess the association between cytokine levels, disease severity and nutritional status. REsULTs: The median(25th-75 th centile) age of the study population was 60(17-116)-mo-old, and 53.5% were female. Biliary atresia was the main cause of chronic liver disease(72%). With respect to Child-Pugh score, cirrhotic patients were distributed as follows: 57.1% Child-Pugh A, a mild presentation of the disease, 34.3% Child-Pugh B, a moderate stage of cirrhosis and 8.6% Child-Pugh C, were considered severe cases. PELD and MELD scores were only above the cutoff point in 5 cases. IL-6 values were increased in patients at nutritional risk(34.9%) compared with those who were well-nourished [7.12(0.58-34.23) pg/m L vs 1.63(0.53-3.43) pg/m L; P = 0.02], correlating inversely with triceps skinfold-for-age z-score(rs =-0.61; P s were associated with liver disease severity assessed by Child-Pugh score(P = 0.001).

Abundances of the fireworm Hermodice carunculata were counted through a monitoring assessment study of fish cages in Barranco Hondo（NE Tenerife）. seven campaigns were conducted from November 2007 to June 2010 and temporal variations were found, as well as differences among sampling stations. The polychaete H. carunculata obtained its highest abundance in sediments beneath fish cages throughout the study period. Thus, the assemblages of this omnivorous species were favoured by the presence of fish cages.
