Pollution of petroleum hydrocarbons, in particular oil spills, has attracted much attention in the past and recent decades. Oil spills influence natural microbial community, and physical and chemical properties of the affected sites. The biodegradation of hydrocarbons by microorganisms is one of the primary ways by which oil spill is eliminated from contaminated sites. One such spill was that of the Russian tanker the Nakhodka that spilled heavy oil into the Sea of Japan on January 2, 1997. The impact of the Nakhodka oil spill resulted in a viscous sticky fluid fouling the shores and affected natural ecosystems. This paper describes the weathering of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria （genus Pseudomonas） and crystallized organic compounds from the Nakhodka oil spill-polluted seashores after nine years. The Nakhodka oil has hardened and formed crust of crystalline paraffin wax as shown by XRD analysis （0.422, 0.377, and 0.250 nm d-spacing） in association with graphite and calcite after 9 years of bioremediation. Anaerobic reverse side of the oil crust contained numerous coccus typed bacteria associated with halite. The finding of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria and paraffin wax in the oil crust may have a significant effect on the weathering processes of the Nakhodka oil spill during the 9- year bioremediation.

The quasi-biweekly oscillation （QBWO） is the second most dominant intraseasonal mode over the westem North Pacific （WNP） during boreal summer. In this study, the modulation of WNP tropical cyclogenesis （TCG） by the QBWO and its association with large-scale patterns are investigated. A strong modulation of WNP TCG events by the QBWO is found. More TCG events occur during the QBWO＇s convectively active phase. Based on the genesis potential index （GPI）, we further evaluate the role of environmental factors in affecting WNP TCG. The positive GPI anomalies associated with the QBWO correspond well with TCG counts and locations. A large positive GPI anomaly is spatially correlated with WNP TCG events during a life cycle of the QBWO. The low-level relative vorticity and mid-level relative humidity appear to be two dominant contributors to the QBWO-composited GPI anomalies during the QBWO＇s active phase, followed by the nonlinear and potential intensity terms. These positive contributions to the GPI anomalies are partly offset by the negative contribution from the vertical wind shear. During the QBWO＇s inactive phase, the mid-level relative humidity appears to be the largest contributor, while weak contributions are also made by the nonlinear and low-level relative vorticity terms. Meanwhile, these positive contributions are partly cancelled out by the negative contribution from the potential intensity. The contributions of these environmental factors to the GPI anomalies associated with the QBWO are similar in all five flow patterns--the monsoon shear line, monsoon confluence region, monsoon gyre, easterly wave, and Rossby wave energy dispersion associated with a preexisting TC. Further analyses show that the QBWO strongly modulates the synoptic-scale wave trains （SSWs） over the WNP, with larger amplitude SSWs during the QBWO＇s active phase. This implies a possible enhanced （weakened） relationship between TCG and SSWs during the active （inactive） phase. This study improves

Three-dimensional(3D)printing is emerging as a transformative technology for biomedical *** 3D printed product can be patient-specific by allowing customizability and direct control of the *** trial-and-error approach currently used for developing the composition of printable inks is time-and resource-consuming due to the increasing number of variables requiring expert *** intelligence has the potential to reshape the ink development process by forming a predictive model for printability from experimental *** this paper,we constructed machine learning(ML)algorithms including decision tree,random forest(RF),and deep learning(DL)to predict the printability of biomaterials.A total of 210 formulations including 16 different bioactive and smart materials and 4 solvents were 3D printed,and their printability was *** ML methods were able to learn and predict the printability of a variety of inks based on their biomaterial *** particular,the RF algorithm has achieved the highest accuracy(88.1%),precision(90.6%),and F1 score(87.0%),indicating the best overall performance out of the 3 algorithms,while DL has the highest recall(87.3%).Furthermore,the ML algorithms have predicted the printability window of biomaterials to guide the ink *** printability map generated with DL has finer granularity than other *** has proven to be an effective and novel strategy for developing biomaterial formulations with desired 3D printability for biomedical engineering applications.

We demonstrate that the methodology of frequency-resolved optical gating(FROG) is applicable to time-resolved reflection spectroscopy of a plasma mirror in the vacuum-ultraviolet(VUV) region. Our recent study [R. Itakura et al. Opt. Express 23, 10914(2015)] has shown that a VUV waveform can be retrieved from a VUV reflection spectrogram of a plasma mirror formed on a fused silica(FS) surface by irradiation with an intense femtosecond laser pulse. Simultaneously, the increase in the reflectivity with respect to the Fresnel reflection of the unexcited FS surface can be obtained as a time-dependent reflectivity of the plasma mirror. In this study, we update the FROG analysis procedure using the least-square generalized projections algorithm. This procedure can reach convergence much faster than the previous one and has no aliasing problem. It is demonstrated that a significantly chirped VUV pulse as long as 1 ps can be precisely characterized.

AIM:To evaluate the protective properties of novel prostone ClC-2 agonist SPI-8811 in porcine model of gastric acid injury. METHODS:Porcine gastric mucosa was mounted in Ussing chambers and injured by bathing mucosal tissues in an HCl Ringer's solution (pH = 1.5) with or without SP1-8811 (1 μmol/L), cystic fibrosis transmem-brane conductance regulator (CFTR) inhibitor (inhibitor 172, 10 μmol/L, apical) and ClC-2 inhibitor ZnCl 2 , 300 μmol/L, apical), on the apical surface of tissues. Transepithelial resistance and mucosal-to-serosal 3 H-mannitol fluxes were measured over a 90-min period. Tissues were analyzed by morph metric techniques, Immunofluorescence and by western blots. RESULTS:Compared with control tissues, acid exposure decreased transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) and increased 3 H-mannitol flux. Pretreatment of gastric mucosa with SPI-8811 was protective against acid-induced decreases in TER (TER, 50 Ω . cm 2 vs 100 Ω . cm 2 ) and abolished increases in flux ( 3 H-mannitol flux, 0.10 μmol/L . cm 2 vs 0.04 μmol/L . cm 2 ). Evidence of histological damage in the presence of acid was markedly at- tenuated by SPI-0811. Immunofluorescence and western analysis for occludin revealed enhanced localization to the region of the tight junction (TJ) after treatment with SPI-8811. Pretreatment with the ClC-2 inhibitor ZnCl 2 , but not the selective CFTR inhibitor 172, attenuated SPI-8811-mediated mucosal protection, suggesting a role for ClC-2. Prostone may serve both protective and reparative roles in injured tissues. CONCLUSION: ClC-2 agonist SPI-8811 stimulated enhancement of mucosal barrier function by protecting TJ protein occludin in porcine gastric mucosa and thus protected the gastric acid injury in porcine stomach.

Seismograms near source fault were synthesized using the hybrid empirical Green’s func-tion method where the discretely simulated seismic waveforms are used for Green’s functions instead of the observed waveforms of small earthquakes. The Green’s function seismic waveforms for small earth-quake were calculated by solving wave equation us-ing the pseudo-spectral method with the staggered grid real FFT strategy under a detailed 2-D velocity structure in Kobe region. Magnitude and seismic moment of simulated Green’s function waveforms were firstly determined by using the relationship be-tween fault length and corner frequency of source spectrum. The simulated Green’s function waveforms were employed to synthesize seismograms of strong ground motion near the earthquake fault. The syn-thetic seismograms of the target earthquake were performed based on the model with multiple source rupture processes. The results suggest that synthe-sized seismograms coincide well with observed seismic waveforms of the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake. The simulated Green’s function method is very useful for prediction of the strong ground mo-tion in region without observed seismic waveforms. The present technique spreads application field of the empirical Green’s function method.

Observation of Magnetic Dipole Forbidden Transitions in LHD and Its Application to Burning Plasma Diagnostics

Magnetic dipole forbidden （M1） transition was studied in large helical device （LHD） and F-, Si- and Ti-like M1 transitions are successfully observed for highly ionized Ar, Kr, Mo and Xe ions. The wavelengths measured in visible range for the heavy elements, which are carefully determined with extremely small uncertainties of 0.02 - 0.05 A as a standard wavelength of usual electric dipole （El） plasma emissions, are compared with theoretical predictions. The result shows a good agreement with recent Hatree-Fock calculation including semi-empirical adjustment. The M1 intensity for the F-like ions is examined by analyzing the intensity ratio of M1 to El. Density dependence of the ratio is experimentally verified by comparing with collisional- radiative model calculation on level population. The M1/E1 line ratio for the F-like ions is applied to the α （He^2＋） particle diagnostics in ITER, in which a steady-state operation of burning plasmas based on D-T fusion reaction is expected with α particle heating. Unfortunately, the present estimation suggests a negative result for the α particle measurement because the ratio is largely enhanced by the collisional excitation with bulk ions due to high ion temperature of ITER of 10 keV as assumed and the resultant effect of the collisional excitation with α particles becomes less. Meanwhile, the M1 transition, in particular, Ti-like WLIII （W^52＋） transition （3627 A） emitted in visible range, is very useful for diagnostics of the impurity behavior and the core plasma parameters in ITER.

AIM: To evaluate the effects of extrahepatic collaterals to the liver on liver damage and patient outcome after embolotherapy for the ruptured hepatic artery pseudoa- neurysm following hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery. METHODS: We reviewed 9 patients who underwent transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for the ruptured hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm following major hepato- biliary pancreatic surgery between June 1992 and April 2006. We paid special attention to the extrahepatic arte- rial collaterals to the liver which may affect post-TAE liver damage and patient outcome. RESULTS: The underlying diseases were all malignan- cies, and the surgical procedures included hepatopancre- atoduodenectomy in 2 patients, hepatic resection with removal of the bile duct in 5, and pancreaticoduodenec- tomy in 2. A total of 11 pseudoaneurysm developed: 4 in the common hepatic artery, 4 in the proper hepatic artery, and 3 in the right hepatic artery. Successful he- mostasis was accomplished with the initial TAE in all patients, except for 1. Extrahepatic arterial pathways to the liver, including the right inferior phrenic artery, the jejunal branches, and the aberrant left hepatic artery, were identified in 8 of the 9 patients after the completion of TAE. The development of collaterals depended on the extent of liver mobilization during the hepatic resection, the postoperative period, the presence or absence of an aberrant left hepatic artery, and the concomitant arte- rial stenosis adjacent to the pseudoaneurysm. The liver tolerated TAE without significant consequences when at least one of the collaterals from the inferior phrenic ar-tery or the aberrant left hepatic artery was present. One patient, however, with no extrahepatic collaterals died of liver failure due to total liver necrosis 9 d after TAE.
