Dear Editor,Beige adipocytes,which increase energy expenditure by dissipating energy as heat,have gained attention as a therapeutic target for combating obesity.1 Adipocytes express many types of G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs),each of which has a unique preference for the Gs,Gi,Gq,and G12 *** the function of Gs-coupledβ-adrenergic receptors in beige adipocyte induction is well established,2 little is known about the function of G12-coupled GPCRs beyond its suppressive roles in white adipocyte maturation.3 In this study,we generated transgenic mice conditionally expressing a G12-coupled designer GPCR using a Cre-loxP system and investigated the potential effects of G12 signaling on adipocyte biology.

AIM: To investigate the effects of nicotine and nicotine plus angiotensin Ⅱ receptor blocker(ARB) on the gene expression profile of human coronary artery endothelial cells(HCAECs).METHODS: The changes in gene expression profiles in HCAECs treated with nicotine and nicotine plus ARB olmesartan were analyzed by DNA microarray. In nicotine-treated HCAECs, 432 genes selected by P itory effect of ARB against the nicotine-induced gene expression profile may possibly induce anti-atherosclerotic effects that are independent of those from lowering the blood pressure.

Rapid transformation of branched pancreatic duct-derived intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm into an invasive carcinoma: A case report

BACKGROUND Intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm(ITPN)is a rare disease accounting for approximately 3%of all intraductal pancreatic tumors,with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(IPMN)being one of the most common differential *** ITPN and IPMN display slow growth.A branched pancreatic duct type is commonly observed in IPMN,whereas ITPN derived from the branched pancreatic duct has been reported in a limited number of cases;hence,its pathogenesis remains *** SUMMARY Here,we present the case of a patient with ITPN localized in a branched pancreatic duct,with poorly controlled irritable bowel syndrome.A contrastenhanced computed tomography scan of the abdomen incidentally revealed a 5-mm oligemic nodule-like change in the body of the *** ultrasound(EUS)indicated a 10-mm hypoechoic mass without any cystic structures that had grown within 2 ***-guided fine needle aspiration was performed for definitive diagnosis,and the findings suggested ductal papillary *** pancreatectomy was performed,and the tumor was pathologically diagnosed as ITPN with an invasive cancerous component,pT3N1aM0,pStage IIB(International Cancer Control,8^(th) edition).The patient underwent treatment with postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy(S-1 monotherapy);however,relapse was observed 1 year and 10 mo after surgical resection,and subsequent treatment involving a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy was *** therapy has since facilitated a stable disease *** Regardless of the microscopic size of the neoplasm,early diagnosis of ITPN with EUS-guided fine needle aspiration and surgical resection are crucial.

Design of ionic liquids as liquid desiccant for an air conditioning system

Suitable control of the humidity can contribute to electric energy savings. However, the present dehumidification system has many weak points. The liquid desiccant air-conditioning system has recently gained growing interest from the stand point of reducing energy consumption during dehumidification. In order to find the appropriate ionic liquids(ILs) as a desiccant for the liquid desiccant air-conditioner system, we conducted a systematic evaluation of the humidification capability of 16 types of ILs. Among the tested ILs, tributyl(methyl)phosphonium dimethyl phosphate([P4441][DMPO_4]) exhibited the best dehumidification capacity and had a less corrosive effect on four types of metals as possible piping materials. It should be noted that this [P_(4441)][DMPO_4] has a very stable nature and produced no odor while conducting the experiment and storing for over 1 year at room temperature under ambient conditions. Furthermore, it was revealed that a 77%(w/w) aqueous solution of [P4441][DMPO_4] worked as an efficient desiccant liquid for the liquid desiccant air-conditioner system.

The liquid desiccant air-conditioning system allows reducing energy consumption compared to the conventional compressor-type air *** order to develop desiccant materials for air conditioners,we have investigated the dehumidification capability of quaternary ammonium Ionic Liquids(ILs)and the equilibrium water vapor pressure of aqueous solutions of these ammonium *** the seven tested types of ILs,2-hydroxyN,N,N-trimethylethan-1-aminium dimethylphosphate([Ch][DMPO4])displayed the best dehumidification capability and the lowest equilibrium water vapor ***,the 80%aqueous solution of[Ch][DMPO4]exhibited a less corrosive effect on four types of metals,i.e.,steel(hot dip zinc-aluminum alloy plated steel),copper(C1100P),aluminum(A5052),and stainless steel(SUS:SUS304).It should be noted that this[Ch][DMPO4]is not only non-toxic but also exhibits a stable nature;the aqueous solution produced no odor after storing for over 1 year under ambient conditions.

神经胶质细胞的活动可以影响学习和记忆的储备和效率。本研究采用小脑依赖水平光动力反应运动学习小鼠模型,研究在线训练期间短期记忆(STM)的形成和离线休息期间长期记忆(LTM)的形成。研究显示,在线和离线学习效果的差异很大。STM早期形成较好者的LTM形成往往受到抑制,而没有明显急性训练效果的STM形成较晚者常常在离线学习中有明显提高。含有LRRC8A的阴离子通道可释放谷氨酸。在星形胶质细胞(包括小脑伯格曼胶质细胞)中特异性地条件性敲除LRRC8A导致STM形成的完全丧失,而在休息期间LTM形成仍然存在。在线训练期间,通过通道视紫红质-2或古菌红素-T(ArchT)对神经胶质细胞的活性进行光遗传学调控,可分别导致STM形成的增强或抑制。STM和LTM可能在在线训练期间同时触发,但LTM在离线期的后期才表达。STM似乎并不稳定,在线培训期间的形成的记忆并没有在LTM中出现。此外,我们发现在休息期间,胶质细胞ArchT的光活化导致LTM形成的增加。这些数据表明STM的形成和LTM的形成是平行的独立过程。可以根据胶质细胞的反应来决定策略的重点是STM还是LTM。

Delayed development of hepatocellular carcinoma during long-term follow-up after eradication of hepatitis C virus by interferon therapy

A 42-year-old Japanese man with liver cirrhosis by hepatitis C virus (HCV) had successful interferon therapy in May 1991. Since then, serum HCV-RNA and liver function tests had been negative. He had continued to drink more than 100 g/d of alcohol as before. In June 2003, a 5-cm tumor was found in the posterior segment of the liver. The tumor was curatively resected and the surgical specimen showed a well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Non-cancerous lesions of the liver revealed fibrosis at stage F3 with minimal to mild inflammation of grade A1. Heavy drinking may retard the dissolution of fibrosis and accelerate HCC development in patients with sustained virological response.

Cholangiocarcinoma after flow diversion surgery for congenital biliary dilatation: A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND Pancreaticobiliary maljunction(PBM)can be classified into two categories,PBM with congenital biliary dilatation(CBD)or PBM without biliary dilatation,and the management of PBM is often *** treatment for PBM with CBD is prophylactic flow diversion surgery,and some authors have reported that the incidence of cancer after extrahepatic bile duct excision is less than 1%.A very rare case of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma 6 years after flow diversion surgery for PBM with CBD is *** SUMMARY A 30-year-old man was diagnosed as having PBM with CBD,Todani classification type IVA,because of abnormal liver enzyme *** underwent flow diversion surgery and cholecystectomy,and the specimen showed adenocarcinoma foci,pT1,pStage *** and a half years passed without any recurrence of bile duct ***,6 years after his operation,computed tomography showed a gradually growing nodule in the bile *** positron emission tomography showed high uptake,and magnetic resonance imaging showed restricted diffusion *** double balloon enteroscopy,the nodule at the posterior bile duct-jejunum anastomosis was directly visualized,and its biopsy specimen showed *** patient underwent right lobectomy and biliary *** pathological diagnosis was intraductal papillary neoplasm with high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia,pTis,pN0,pStage *** patient’s postoperative course was uneventful,and he has had no recurrence up to the present *** This case suggests the necessity of careful observation after flow diversion surgery,especially when PBM with CBD is detected in adulthood.

BACKGROUND Chronic pancreatitis occasionally requires surgical treatment that can be performed with various ***,this type of surgery presents with postoperative *** report a case of a successful retrograde pancreatojejunostomy for chronic pancreatitis and infected pancreatic *** SUMMARY A 62-year-old male with a 10-year history of chronic pancreatitis presented with epigastric pain for one week and a 20 kg weight loss over one *** tomography showed stones in the pancreas(mainly the head),expansion of the main pancreatic duct,and thinning of the pancreatic *** resonance imaging showed infected pancreatic cysts connected to the stomach with a fistula from the splenic hilum to the caudal portion of the liver’s lateral *** endoscopic retrograde pancreatography was performed;the guide wires could not pass through the stones in the pancreas and therefore,drainage of the main pancreatic duct was not ***,a distal pancreatomy and splenectomy were performed;however,the pancreatic juice in the remaining parenchyma was blocked by the ***,we performed a retrograde pancreatojejunostomy and Roux-en-Y *** patient had no postoperative complications and was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day *** A distal pancreatomy,retrograde pancreatojejunostomy,and Roux-en-Y anastomosis could be an effective surgical procedure for intractable chronic pancreatitis.
