Introduction: Inadequate nutritional support after LVAD placement is known to increase postoperative infections and to decrease survival. LVAD patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation and complicated postoperative recovery requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation may require long-term tube feedings. Placement of a PEG requires knowledge of the location of the LVAD pocket and driveline to avoid device infection and injury. Methods: Between August 2008 and December 2011, 39 patients underwent HeartMate II LVAD placement in our institution. Among them, 5 patients underwent PEG tube placement for long-term nutritional support. Procedure management consisted of cessation of anticoagulation and correction of abnormal coagulation;a cardiothoracic surgeon or intensivist in the operating room to communicate with the surgeon who performed the PEG procedure;and VAD coordinator or perfusionist in the operating room to assist in monitoring the VAD. Data were retrospectively analyzed to investigate complications related to the PEG placement. Results: The studied patients consisted of 3 males and 2 females with mean age of 58 +/﹣5.0. The interval of LVAD to PEG placement was a mean 21 +/﹣8.8 days. PEG was successfully performed in the operating room in all patients. There were no LVAD device or driveline injuries related to the PEG procedure. There were no postoperative short-term or long-term PEG related complications such as acute gastric bleeding or dislodgement of the PEG tube. conclusions: PEG placement for HeartMate II LVAD patients can be done without increasing the risk of device or intraabdominal organ injury with carefully coordinated efforts from both the mechanical support team and surgical services.

Background Anthonomus grandis grandis is the main cotton pest in the Americas,with the potential to become a pest in other *** insect uses the plant's reproductive organs for feeding,oviposition,and survival strategies in the off-season,sheltering in dry *** study aimed to know the reproductive potential,feeding,longevity,and morphometric characteristics of boll weevils from dry bolls,squares,and *** were obtained from infested squares,dry bolls,and traps installed in cotton fields and the caatinga *** weevil pairs were maintained in the laboratory to assess the oviposition,feeding holes,longevity,and morphometric measurements of the parental and F_(1) *** In the parental generation,boll weevils from traps(the caatinga area and cotton cultivation)showed greater reproductive *** weevils from squares and the caatinga area showed greater feeding activity compared with those from cotton *** rostrum length,thorax+abdomen length,and abdomen width were observed in boll weevils from cotton cultivation and dry *** origin of boll weevils parental generation did not affect progeny emergence *** F_(1) generation of boll weevils showed significant differences in average longevity depending on the origin of different ***,differences in rostrum lengths were observed,with the boll weevils coming from traps installed in cotton cultivation,the caatinga area,and dry bolls being the *** thorax+abdomen length and abdomen width,the highest values were observed in those from the caatinga area and cotton *** It was proven that dry bolls did not affect the reproductive,feeding,and longevity performance of boll weevils,enabling better insect fitness(reproduction and size)in relation to those coming from *** use of dry bolls as off-season shelter is an important survival strategy for the boll weevil.

BAcKGROUND: The current standard for con? rmation of correct supra-diaphragmatic central venous catheter(cVc) placement is with plain ? lm chest radiography(cXR). We hypothesized that a simple point-of-care ultrasound(POcUS) protocol could effectively con? rm placement and reduce time to con? ***: We prospectively enrolled a convenience sample of patients in the emergency department and intensive care unit who required cVc placement. correct positioning was considered if turbulent flow was visualized in the right atrium on sub-xiphoid, parasternal or apical cardiac ultrasound after injecting 5 cc of sterile, non-agitated, normal saline through the ***: Seventy-eight patients were enrolled. POcUS had a sensitivity of 86.8%(95%cI 77.1%–93.5%) and speci? city of 100%(95%cI 15.8%–100.0%) for identifying correct central venous catheter placement. Median POcUS and cXR completion were 16 minutes(IQR 10–29) and 32 minutes(IQR 19–45), ***: Ultrasound may be an effective tool to confirm central venous catheter placement in instances where there is a delay in obtaining a con? rmatory cXR.

Over the last 20 years, compression fossils of feathers surrounding dinosaurs have greatly expanded our understanding of the origin and evolution of feathers. One of the most peculiar feather morphotypes discovered to date are rachis dominated feathers(RDFs), which have also been referred to as proximally ribbon-like pennaceous feathers(PRPFs). These elongate feathers are only found in the tail plumage, typically occurring in pairs with both streamer(not proximally ribbon-like) and racket-plume morphologies recognized. Here we describe a large sample set of isolated and paired RDFs from Upper cretaceous Burmese amber(～ 99 Ma). Amber preserves the finest details of these fragile structures in three dimensions, demonstrating that RDFs form a distinct feather morphotype with a ventrally open rachis, and with significant variability in pigmentation, microstructure, and symmetry.

Effect of interface on mid-infrared photothermal response of MoS2 thin film grown by pulsed laser deposition

This study reports on the mid-infrared （mid-IR） photothermal response of multilayer MoS2 thin films grown on crystalline （p-type silicon and c-axis- oriented single crystal sapphire） and amorphous （Si/SiO2 and Si/SiN） substrates by pulsed laser deposition （PLD）. The photothermal response of the MoS2 films is measured as the changes in the resistance of the MoS2 films when irradiated with a mid-IR （7 to 8.2 μm） source. We show that enhancing the temperature coefficient of resistance （TcR） of the MoS2 thin films is possible by controlling the film-substrate interface through a proper choice of substrate and growth conditions. The thin films grown by PLD are characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEM） images show that the MoS2 films grow on sapphire substrates in a layer-by-layer manner with misfit dislocations. The layer growth morphology is disrupted when the films are grown on substrates with a diamond cubic structure （e.g., silicon） because of twin growth formation. The growth morphology on amorphous substrates, such as Si/SiO2 or Si/SiN, is very different. The PLD-grown MoS2 films on silicon show higher TcR （-2.9% K^-1 at 296 K）, higher mid-IR sensitivity （△R/R = 5.2%）, and higher responsivity （8.7 V·W^-1） compared to both the PLD-grown films on other substrates and the mechanically exfoliated MoS2 flakes transferred to different substrates.

The phytohormone auxin plays crucial roles in nearly every aspect of plant growth and *** signaling is activated through the phytohormone-induced proteasomal degradation of the Auxin/INDOLE-3-AcETIc AcID(Aux/IAA)family of transcriptional ***,many auxin-modulated physiological processes are also regulated by nitric oxide(NO)that executes its biological effects predominantly through protein S-nitrosylation at specific cysteine ***,little is known about the molecular mechanisms in regulating the interactive NO and auxin ***,we show that NO represses auxin signaling by inhibiting IAA17 protein *** induces the S-nitrosylation of cys-70 located in the intrinsically disordered region of IAA17,which inhibits the TIR1-IAA17 interaction and consequently the proteasomal degradation of *** accumulation of a higher level of IAA17 attenuates auxin ***,an IAA17^(c70W)nitrosomimetic mutation renders the accumulation of a higher level of the mutated protein,thereby causing partial resistance to auxin and defective lateral root *** together,these results suggest that S-nitrosylation of IAA17 at cys-70 inhibits its interaction with TIR1,thereby negatively regulating auxin *** study provides unique molecular insights into the redox-based auxin signaling in regulating plant growth and development.

AIM To determine the effect of childhood obesity and insulin resistance on bone health. METHODS We conducted a cross sectional study in pubertal adolescents and young adults 13-20 years old who were either overweight/obese or normal weight. Participants were Tanner 3 or above for pubertal stage, and had fasting blood work done to measure glucose, insulin, c-reactive protein and lipid levels. Homeostatic model of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR) was calculated using the formula(Fasting Blood Glucose *Insulin/405). Body composition and bone mineral density were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA; Hologic QDR 4500, Waltham, MA, United Kingdom). RESULTS Percent trunk fat was associated inversely with whole body bone mineral content(BMc), whereas HOMA-IR was associated positively with whole body *** Our results suggest that abdominal adiposity may have an adverse effect on whole body bone parameters and that this effect is not mediated by insulin resistance.
