Objective:The objective of this study was to com.are cardiac transplant operative and postoperative courses of patients with failed Fontan physiology who were initially palliated with a Norwood(FFN)to those without a prior Norwood(FF).m.thods:A single-institution retrospective review of all patients with Fontan failure who under-went cardiac transplantation from.2003–2021 was com.leted-22 underwent prior Norwood(FFN)and 11 did not(FF).Descriptive and inferential statistics were calculated for operative course and patient ***:The operative course of the FFN cohort appeared to be m.re com.lex(not statistically significant,but clinically relevant)-this group exclusively experienced sternal re-entry events(3 of 22 patients)and concom.tant neo-aor-tic reconstruction(6 patients),had a longer duration of surgery(m.dian of 682 m.n vs.575.5 m.n),m.re tim. on circulatory arrest(m.dian of 25.5 m.n vs.12.5 m.n),and m.re frequent use of open sternal m.nagem.nt[50%of patients(11/22)vs.27.3%of patients(3/11)].Postoperatively,these patients underwent m.re m.diastinal explora-tions[other than sternal closure;40.9%of patients(9/22)vs.18.2%of patients(2/11)],spent m.re tim. on m.chanical ventilation(m.dian of 5 days vs.2 days),had a longer length of stay(m.dian of 30 days vs.19 days),and required m.re catheter-based re-interventions[22.7%of patients(5/22)vs.9.1%of patients(1/11)].Conclu-sion:Although underpowered,our results suggest that the operative course of FFN patients is m.re challenging,based m.stly on neo-aortic arch *** turn,this likely leads to a m.re com.lex postoperative *** are currently collaborating with other institutions to increase the cohort size and power of the study.

The occasion of the longest totality of an eclipse in the 18 yr 11^1/3 d saros cycle leads to taking stock of the scientific value of ground-based eclipse observations in this space age. Though a num.er of space satellites from.the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Russia study the Sun, scientists at eclipses can observe the solar chrom.sphere and corona at higher spatial resolution, at higher tem.oral resolution, and at higher spectral resolution than are possible aloft. Furtherm.re, eclipse expeditions can transport a wide variety of state-of-the-art equipm.nt to the path of totality. Thus, for at least som. years to com., solar eclipse observations will rem.in both scientifically valuable and cost-effective ways to study the outer solar atm.sphere.

Objective: Studies addressing effective contraceptive use by population density are lacking. We hypothesize that contraception counseling and effective contraception use vary by population density. Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study using the 2006-2010 National Survey of Fam.ly Growth data, including fem.le subjects ages 15 to 19. The prim.ry exposure was population density, defined as Principal city of a m.tropolitan Statistical Area (m.A) or “city”, Other m.A or “non-city urban”, and Not m.A or “rural.” The prim.ry outcom. was effective contraception use and the secondary outcom. was contraceptive counseling exposure. m.ltivariate analysis using logistic regression was perform.d to estim.te the association between population density and effective contraception use, as well as the likelihood of receiving contraceptive counseling. Results: 2284 subjects were studied. Com.ared to non-city urban dwellers, city adolescents had sim.lar effective contraception use (aOR: 0.99, [0.79, 1.24]), whereas rural adolescents had significantly higher use (aOR: 1.79, [1.35, 2.36]). Am.ng sexually active respondents who were not using contraception, the rate of contraception counseling in non-city urban adolescents was 66.7%. In com.arison, the city dwellers had higher rate of counseling (79.1%, aOR: 1.87;95% CI: [1.09, 3.22]). Sim.larly, rural adolescents also had higher rate of counseling (81.5%, aOR: 2.37;95% CI: [1.08, 5.19]). Conclusions: Rural residents were m.re likely to use effective contraception m.thods than their city and non-city urban counterparts. However, higher rates of contraception counseling am.ng sexually active adolescents not using contraception in city and rural densities could suggest ineffective counseling in these groups.

A pilot study was conducted at Penn State University to determ.ne whether the type of drywall joint com.ound would influence the shear strength of wood-fram. stud walls sheathed with Gypsum.Wall Board (GWB or drywall). In this study, five 2438 m. by 2438 m. specim.ns were tested under in-plane cyclic racking loading following the CUREE loading protocol for light-fram. wall system.. Three specim.ns were finished using non-cem.nt based joint com.ound while the other two used cem.nt based joint com.ound. Based on the experim.ntal testing of the specim.ns, the results show that the use of cem.nt based joint com.ound on drywall joints produces higher shear capacity for the wall system.as com.ared to sim.lar specim.ns finished with conventional non-cem.nt based joint com.ound. The result of the study is particularly im.ortant for high seism.c regions where interior stud walls in residential construction effectively take part in seism.c resistance even though wood shear walls are norm.lly used on exterior walls.
