Impact of a Dietary Supplement Containing.Rosemary and Daylily on Biochemical Markers of Cog.itive Health, Sleep Quality and Related Variables in Men and Women

Backg.ound: We investig.ted the influence of a botanical ag.nt to improve sleep quality and associated measures in men and women with self-reported difficulty sleeping. Methods: 32 individuals were randomly assig.ed in double blind manner to ing.st a botanical ag.nt (CLOCK?, containing.Rosemary [Rosmarinus officinalis] and Daylily [Hemerocallis fulva]) or a placebo over a 6-week intervention. During.weeks 1 and 2, subjects ing.sted one serving.of the assig.ed condition, followed by a two-week washout. During.weeks 5 and 6, subjects ing.sted two serving. of the condition. The Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire was used as an outcome measure, as were subjective measures of sleep quality, energ. level, and mood. Blood samples collected pre- and post-intervention were assayed for acetylcholine (ACH), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), irisin, and melatonin. Results: No differences were noted between conditions in measures of sleep (p > 0.05). While no differences of statistical sig.ificance were noted in subjective feeling., during.weeks 5 and 6 as compared to baseline, subjects assig.ed to the supplement noted an 8% increase in attentiveness, an 11% increase in alertness, a 12% increase in focus, a 14% increase in feeling.energ.tic, a 12% increase in enthusiasm, a 23% increase in feeling.well rested, an 11% decrease in feeling.slug.ish, and a 16% decrease in feeling.depressed, without the same improvement observed for subjects in the placebo g.oup. All biochemical measures were increased from pre- to post-treatment with two serving. of the supplement;the larg.st percent increase noted for BDNF (27%) and the larg.st effect size noted for irisin (d = 1.36). Biochemical values for the placebo condition were unchang.d. Conclusions: CLOCK? may have an impact on certain measurements of mood, with a sig.ificant impact on the biochemical marker, BDNF. The Impact of a Prior Norwood Procedure on Cardiac Transplantation in Failed Fontan Physiolog.

Objective:The objective of this study was to compare cardiac transplant operative and postoperative courses of patients with failed Fontan physiolog. who were initially palliated with a Norwood(FFN)to those without a prior Norwood(FF).Methods:A sing.e-institution retrospective review of all patients with Fontan failure who under-went cardiac transplantation from 2003–2021 was completed-22 underwent prior Norwood(FFN)and 11 did not(FF).Descriptive and inferential statistics were calculated for operative course and patient ***:The operative course of the FFN cohort appeared to be more complex(not statistically sig.ificant,but clinically relevant)-this g.oup exclusively experienced sternal re-entry events(3 of 22 patients)and concomitant neo-aor-tic reconstruction(6 patients),had a long.r duration of surg.ry(median of 682 min vs.575.5 min),more time on circulatory arrest(median of 25.5 min vs.12.5 min),and more frequent use of open sternal manag.ment[50%of patients(11/22)vs.27.3%of patients(3/11)].Postoperatively,these patients underwent more mediastinal explora-tions[other than sternal closure;40.9%of patients(9/22)vs.18.2%of patients(2/11)],spent more time on mechanical ventilation(median of 5 days vs.2 days),had a long.r leng.h of stay(median of 30 days vs.19 days),and required more catheter-based re-interventions[22.7%of patients(5/22)vs.9.1%of patients(1/11)].Conclu-sion:Althoug. underpowered,our results sug.est that the operative course of FFN patients is more challeng.ng.based mostly on neo-aortic arch *** turn,this likely leads to a more complex postoperative *** are currently collaborating.with other institutions to increase the cohort size and power of the study.

Outpatients with an acquired brain injury(ABI)experience physical,mental,and social *** can be classified into two subg.oups based on mechanism of injury:mild traumatic brain injury(mTBI;e.g.,concussion)and other ABI(e.g.,stroke,brain aneurysm,encephalitis).Our understanding.of habitual activity levels within ABI populations is limited because they are often collected using.self-report *** purpose of this study was to,1)describe the habitual activity levels of outpatients with ABI using.objective and self-report monitoring.and 2)compare the activity levels of outpatients with mTBI *** *** outpatients with other ABI(mean±standard deviation:[58±13]years,9 females)and 12 outpatients with mTBI([48±11]years,9 females)wore a thig.-worn activPAL 24 h/day(h/day)for *** with ABI averag.d(6.0±2.3)h/day of uprig.t time,(10.6±2.2)h/day of sedentary time,(5.6±2.7)h/day in prolong.d sedentary bouts>1 h,(5960±3037)steps/day,and(11±13)minutes/day(min/day)of moderate-vig.rous physical activity(MVPA).There were no differences between activPAL-derived uprig.t,sedentary,prolong.d sedentary time,and physical activity between the mTBI and other ABI g.oups(all,p>0.31).Outpatients with ABI overestimated their MVPA levels(t138 min/week)and underestimated sedentary time(-4.3 h/day)compared to self-report(all,pg.hig. activity levels,outpatients with ABI objectively exhibit hig.ly inactive and sedentary *** habitual movement behaviours of our sample did not differ by mechanism of injury(i.e.,mTBI versus other ABI).Targ.ting.reductions in objectively measured sedentary time are needed to prog.essively improve the habitual movement behaviours of outpatients with ABI.
