Effect of interface on mid-infrared photothermal response of moS2 thin film grown by pulsed laser deposition

This study reports on the mid-infrared （mid-IR） photothermal response of multilayer moS2 thin films grown on crystalline （p-type silicon and c-axis- oriented single crystal sapphire） and amorphous （Si/SiO2 and Si/SiN） substrates by pulsed laser deposition （PLD）. The photothermal response of the moS2 films is measured as the changes in the resistance of the moS2 films when irradiated with a mid-IR （7 to 8.2 μm） source. We show that enhancing the temperature coefficient of resistance （TCR） of the moS2 thin films is possible by controlling the film-substrate interface through a proper choice of substrate and growth conditions. The thin films grown by PLD are characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy （HRTEm） images show that the moS2 films grow on sapphire substrates in a layer-by-layer manner with misfit dislocations. The layer growth morphology is disrupted when the films are grown on substrates with a diamond cubic structure （e.g., silicon） because of twin growth formation. The growth morphology on amorphous substrates, such as Si/SiO2 or Si/SiN, is very different. The PLD-grown moS2 films on silicon show higher TCR （-2.9% K^-1 at 296 K）, higher mid-IR sensitivity （△R/R = 5.2%）, and higher responsivity （8.7 V·W^-1） compared to both the PLD-grown films on other substrates and the mechanically exfoliated moS2 flakes transferred to different substrates.

Elective regional lymphadenectomy for advanced auricular squamous cell carcinoma

AIm: To investigate the rate of occult lymph node disease in elective parotidectomy and neck dissection specimens in patients with advanced auricular cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma(cS CC). mETHODS: At a single institution, from 2000 to 2010, 17 patients with advanced auricular cS CC were considered high risk for occult regional parotid and/or neck nodal metastases and, thus, underwent an auriculectomy and elective regional lymphadenectomy(parotidectomy and/or neck dissection). Indications for elective regional lymphadenectomy were large tumor size, locally invasive tumors, post-surgical and post-radiation recurrence, and being an immunosuppressed patient. We determined the presence of microscopic disease in the regional(parotid and neck dissection) pathology ***: There were 17 advanced auricular c SCC patients analyzed for this study. Fifteen(88%) patients were men. The average age was 69(range: 33 to 86). Ten(59%) patients presented with post-surgical recurrence. Five(29%) patients presented with postradiation recurrence. Four(24%) patients presentedwith both post-surgical and post-radiation recurrence. Four(24%) patients were immunosuppressed(2(12%) were liver transplant patients, 2(12%) were chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients, and 1(6%) was both). The subsite distribution of c SCC included helix(3, 18%), antihelix(2, 12%), conchal bowl(7, 41%), tragus(2, 12%), and postauricular sulcus(3, 18%). Four(24%) patients presented with multifocal auricular cS CC. No patients had bilateral disease. All patients were confirmed to have c SCC on final pathology. The tumors were well(5, 29%), moderately(10, 59%), and poorly(2, 12%) differentiated SCC. The average size of the cS CC tumor was 2.9 cm(range: 1.7 to 7 cm). Update on hepatitis C: Direct-acting antivirals

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) was discovered 26 years ago. For decades, interferon-based therapy has been the mainstay of treatment for HCV. Recently, several direct-acting antivirals(DAAs) have been approved for treatment of HCV-infected patients and to help combat the virus. These drugs have revolutionized the management of HCV as all-oral regimens with favorable side effect profiles and superior rates of sustained virological response. Emerging real-world data are demonstrating results comparable to registration trials for DAA agents. Suddenly, the potential for eradicating HCV is on the horizon.

金属稳定同位素已经广泛应用于矿床学研究以及找矿勘查。金属来源及其成矿过程是金属矿床研究以及找矿勘查中重点关注的基本核心问题。金属稳定同位素这项新技术进一步提高了我们对地壳中金属来源、迁移和富集的认识。这项新技术的优点是我们可以直接从矿石矿物本身获取信息。在本文中,我们重点关注矿石、水、岩石、土壤、植物等测量出的Fe-Cu-Zn同位素分馏,聚焦于Fe-Cu-Zn同位素从最深部岩浆系统开始一直向上延伸到浅部表生系统的过程中Fe-Cu-Zn同位素如何应用于矿床学研究以及找矿勘查,试图展示这些相对较新的技术可以提供的潜在应用范围。经过系统研究和总结,我们认为金属稳定同位素数据可以从三方面加以利用。首先,地表的植物、水、风化的岩石以及土壤中产生的较大的同位素分馏可以作为地下矿产勘查的指示标志;第二,矿区范围内金属稳定同位素往往具有系统的空间变化规律,可以指示成矿热液空间演化模式和矿体延伸方向;第三,金属元素作为成矿元素,其同位素可以直接有效地约束矿石的形成过程、成因以及源区特征。

Smoking cessation prior to elective total joint arthroplasty results in sustained abstinence postoperatively

BACKGROUND Tobacco use is a well-documented modifiable risk factor for perioperative *** To determine the tobacco abstinence rates of patients who made cessation efforts prior to a total joint arthroplasty(TJA)*** A retrospective evaluation was performed on 88 self-reported tobacco users who underwent TJA between 2014-2022 and had tobacco cessation dates within 3 mo of *** patients were contacted via phone survey to understand their tobacco use pattern,and patient reported outcomes.A total of 37 TJA patients *** Our cohort was on average 61-years-old,60%(n=22)women,with an average body mass index of 30 kg/m^(2).The average follow-up time was 2.9±1.9 years.A total of 73.0%(n=27)of patients endorsed complete abstinence from tobacco use prior to *** cessation methods were used perioperatively including prescription therapy(13.5%),over the counter nicotine replacement(18.9%),cessation programs(5.4%).At final follow up,43.2%(n=16)of prior tobacco smokers reported complete *** who were able to maintain cessation postoperatively had improved Patient-Reported Outcomes measurement Information System(PROmIS)-10 mental health scores(49 vs 58;P=0.01),and hip dysfunction and osteoarthritis outcome score for joint replacement(***)scores(63 vs 82;P=0.02).No patients in this cohort had a prosthetic joint infection or required revision *** We report a tobacco cessation rate of 43.2%in patients undergoing elective TJA nearly 3 years *** undergoing TJA who were able to remain abstinent had improved PROmIS-10 mental health scores and *** *** perioperative period provides clinicians a unique opportunity to assist active tobacco smokers with cessation efforts and improve postoperative outcomes.

Boldness and predator evasion in naturally hybridizing swordtails （Teleostei： Xiphophorus）

Correlations among behavioral traits can generate trade-offs and constrain phenotypic evolution. Interspecific hybridization has the potential to alter behavioral trait correlations, but the effect of hybridization on suites of behavioral traits has received relatively little attention. We evaluated how natural hybridization changes the relationship between boldness （time of emergence and proportion of time out of shelter） and response to a simulated predator threat in swordtails （Teleostei： Xiphophorus）. In poeciliid fishes, bold individuals have increased survival in the presence of predators. This non-intuitive observation may arise as a result of bold individuals being more likely to engage in anti-predator behaviors. Contrary to our prediction, bold indi- viduals were less likely to perform a fast-start response to a predator threat. This correlation was consistent among populations and species but was only significant in hybrids. The observed correlation between boldness and anti-predator behavior could im- pact hybrid fitness and the evolvability of hybrid lineages. more generally, our findings suggest that hybridization could influence the integration of behavioral phenotypes, as has been amply documented for morphology. Animal personality and behavioral syndromes could therefore play an important role in the evolutionary fate of natural hybrids [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 596-603, 2015].

To the Editor,Tumor invasion of the inferior vena cava(IVC)through direct erosion is a rare and poor prognostic feature of aggressive hepatic or perihepatic malignancies[1,2].Literature shows poor response to chemotherapy,such that resection often is the only option for improved survival[3].multidisciplinary collaborations can expand technical options;incorporation of transplant techniques has led to successful R0 resection involving difficult vascular reconstruction and extended resection[4,5].This study describes and analyzes the ten-year collaborative experience of hepatobiliary(HPB)surgeons in management of malignancies involving the perihepatic IVC.

High-intensity interval training(HIIT) for patients with chronic diseases

Exercise training provides physiological benefits for both improving athletic performance and maintaining good health. Different exercise training modalities and strategies exist. Two common exercise strategies are high-intensity interval training （HIIT） and moderate-intensity continuous exercise training （mCT）. HIIT was first used early in the 20th century and popularized later that century for improving performance of Olympic athletes. The primary premise underlying HIIT is that, compared to energy expenditure-matched mCT, a greater amount of work is performed at a higher intensity during a single exercise session which is achieved by alternating high-intensity exercise intervals with low-intensity exercise or rest intervals. Emerging research suggests that this same training method can provide beneficial effects for patients with a chronic disease and should be included in the comprehensive medical management plan. Accordingly, a major consideration in developing an individual exercise prescription for a patient with a chronic disease is the selection of an appropriate exercise strategy. In order to maximize exercise training benefits, this strategy should be tailored to the individual＇s need. The focus of this paper is to provide a brief summary of the current literature re^ardin~ the use of HIIT to enhance the fimctional capacity of individuals with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and diabetes diseases.
