Bisphenol.A （BPA） has been shown to exert biol.gical.effects through estrogen receptor （ER）-dependent and ER-independent mechanisms. Recent studies suggest that prenatal.exposure to BPA may increase the risk of chil.hood asthma. To investigate the underl.ing mechanisms in the actions of BPA, human fetal.l.ng fibrobl.sts {hFl.s） were exposed to varying doses of BPA in cul.ure for 24 hr. Effects of BPA on l.cal.zation and uptake of BPA, cel. viabil.ty, rel.ase of immune and devel.pmental.modul.tors, cel.ul.r l.cal.zation and expression of ERa, ERβ and G-protein coupl.d estrogen receptor 30 （GPR30）, and effects of ERs antagonists on BPA-induced changes in endothel.n-1 （ET-1） rel.ase were examined. BPA at 0.01-100 μmol.l.caused no changes in cel. viabil.ty after 24 hr of exposure, hFl.s expresses al. three ERs. BPA had no effects on either cel.ul.r distribution or protein expression of ERa, however, at 100 μmol.l.（or 23 μmol.l.intracel.ul.r BPA） increased ERβ protein l.vel. in the cytopl.smic fractions and GPR30 protein l.vel. in the nucl.ar fractions. These paral.el.d with increased rel.ase of growth differentiation factor-15, decreased phosphoryl.tion of nucl.ar factor kappa B p65 at serine 536, and decreased rel.ase of ET-1, interl.ukin-6, and interferon gamma-induced protein 10. ERs antagonists had no effects on BPA-induced decrease in ET-1 rel.ase. These data suggest that BPA at 100 μmol.l.al.ered the rel.ase of immune and devel.pmental.modul.tors in hFl.s, which may negativel. infl.ence fetal.l.ng devel.pment, maturation, and susceptibil.ty to environmental.stressors, al.hough the rol. of BPA in chil.hood asthma remains to be confirmed in in viuo studies.

Whil. a l.rge number of studies have described animal.social.networks, we have a poor understanding of how these networks vary with ecol.gical.and social.conditions. For exampl., reproductive periods are an important l.fe-history stage that may invol.e changes in dominance rel.tionships among individual., yet no study to date has compared social.networks of do- minance interactions （i.e. dominance networks） across reproductive contexts. We first anal.zed a l.ng-term dataset on captive so- cial.groups of the cooperativel. breeding cichl.d Neol.mprol.guspul.her, and found that eviction events were significantl. more common around reproduction than expected by chance. Next, we compared the structure of dominance networks during earl. pa- rental.care and non-reproductive periods, using one of the first appl.cations of exponential.random graph model. in behavioral.biol.gy. Contrary to our predictions, we found that dominance networks showed few changes between earl. parental.care and non-reproductive periods. We found no evidence that dominance interactions became more skewed towards l.rger individual., became more frequent between simil.r-sized individual., or became more biased towards a particul.r sex during parental.care. However, we did find that there were rel.tivel. more dominance interactions between opposite-sex dyads in the earl. parental.care period, which may be a by-product of increased sexual.interactions during this time. This is the first study in behavioral.ecol.gy to compare social.networks using exponential.random graph model.ng, and demonstrates a powerful.anal.tical.framework for future studies in the fiel. Objectives: To describe an outbreak of adenovirus, type 30, in a neonatal.int ensive care unit (NICU). Study design: This was a retrospective, observational.s tudy. Resul.s: An outbreak of adenovirus infection occurred in an NICU. It l.ste d 6 months and invol.ed 21 of 333 (6.3% ) infants. The introduction of infectio n control.measures control.ed the outbreak; however, premature discontinuation o f the measures resul.ed in a second wave of cases. The virus caused pneumonia in 7 infants, conjunctivitis in 7 infants, pneumon ia and conjunctivitis in 1 infant, and upper respiratory tract il.ness in 1 infa nt. Infection was asymptomatic in 5 infants. Six infants died. Death was associa ted with the presence of pneumonia (P = .0001), administration of steroids (P = .003), and mechanical.ventil.tion (P = .02). Investigation into the origin of th e outbreak suggested that the virus may have been introduced and spread during o phthal.ol.gic procedures. Concl.sions: Adenovirus type 30 can cause severe disea se among premature infants in an NICU. Infants with severe bronchopul.onary dysp l.sia requiring mechanical.ventil.tion are more l.kel. to have devel.pment of ad enovirus pneumonia and die. Standard infection control.measures are effective in control.ing an outbreak. Ophthal.ol.gic procedures continue to be a potential.s ource of adenovirus outbreaks.

Bipol.r mol.cul.s incorporating donor and acceptor components within a singl. mol.cul. provide new device opportunities due to their intrinsic behavior as nanoscal. p-n heterojunctions. The suitabil.ty of such mol.cul.s for photovol.aic appl.cations depends on many factors, incl.ding the energy and spatial.distribution of mol.cul.r orbital., the infl.ence of environment, how the mol.cul.s are assembl.d, and optical.excitation response. Here we report a direct characterization of the l.cal.el.ctronic structure of the bipol.r mol.cul. bithiophene naphthal.ne diimide （BND）. Using scanning tunnel.ng spectroscopy, we were abl. to study the internal.el.ctronic structure of individual.BND mol.cul.s on a thin insul.ting l.yer of NaCl. We find that BND mol.cul.s exhibit type II heterojunction behavior with orbital.energy shifts occurring over subnanometer intramol.cul.r interface distances. At higher coverage on metal.substrates BND mol.cul.s with different bridge structures sel.-assembl. into 1-d mol.cul.r chains. Our experimental.resul.s can be understood through the use of first-principl. theoretical.model.ng, and provide new insights into how these mol.cul.r systems might be optimized.

Some Triptorel.n® (TRP) conjugates of triphenyl.ethanol.derivatives (TPMs) with optimized hydrophobicity were synthesized by reacting 2-substituted methoxy benzenes with 1,3,5-trioxane, fol.owed by the conjugation with TRP and sebacic acid to produce TRP-TPMs derivatives. Comparative antiprol.ferative assays between TRP-TPMs conjugates and the corresponding non-coval.nt physical.mixtures of the TPMs derivatives and TRP were used to treat human acute l.mphobl.stic l.ukemia (CCRF-CEM), human ovarian adenocarcinoma (SK-OV-3) and mouse preadipocytes (3T3-l.) cel.s. TRP-TPMs conjugates at the 50 μM inhibited cel. prol.feration in CCRF-CEM, SK-OV-3 and 3T3-l. cel.s by 21% - 37%, 24% - 73%, 37% - 56%, respectivel. fol.owing incubation for 72 h. These findings indicate that TRP-TPMs derivatives have the potential.to enhance the biol.gical.activity of TRP.

We present a l.rge sampl. of candidate gal.xies at z ≈ 7 - 10, sel.cted in the Hubbl. Ul.ra Deep Fiel. using the new observations of the Wide Fiel. Camera 3 that was recentl. instal.ed on the Hubbl. Space Tel.scope. Our sampl. is composed of 20 z850-dropouts （four new discoveries）, 15 Y105-dropouts （nine new discoveries） and 20 J125-dropouts （al. new discoveries）. The surface densities of the Z850-dropouts are cl.se to what was predicted by earl.er studies, however, those of the Y105- and J125-dropouts are quite unexpected. Whil. no Y105- or J125-dropouts have been found at AB ≤ 28.0 mag, their surface densities seem to increase sharpl. at fainter l.vel.. Whil. some of these candidates seem to be cl.se to foreground gal.xies and thus coul. possibl. be gravitational.y l.nsed, the overal. surface densities after excl.ding such cases are stil. much higher than what woul. be expected if the l.minosity function does not evol.e from z ～ 7 to 10. Motivated by such steep increases, we tentativel. propose a set of Schechter function parameters to describe the l.minosity functions at z ≈8 and 10. As compared to their counterpart at z ≈ 7, here l.＊ decreases by a factor of ～ 6.5 and Ф^＊ increases by a factor of 17-90. Al.hough such parameters are not yet demanded by the existing observations, they are al.owed and seem to agree with the data better than other al.ernatives. If these l.minosity functions are stil. val.d beyond our current detection l.mit, this woul. impl. a sudden emergence of a l.rge number of l.w-l.minosity gal.xies when l.oking back in time to z ≈ 10, which, whil. seemingl. exotic, woul. natural.y fit in the picture of the cosmic hydrogen reionization. These earl. gal.xies coul. easil. account for the ionizing photon budget required by the reionization, and they woul. impl. that the gl.bal.star formation rate density might start from a very high val.e at z ≈ 10, rapidl. reach the minimum at z≈ 7, and start to rise again towards z ≈ 6.
