Hydroxyl radical production by abiotic oxidation of pyrite under estuarine conditions:The effects of aging,seawater anions and illumination

Pyrite is widely distributed in estuarine sediments as an inexpensive natural Fenton-like reagent,however,the mechanism on the hydroxyl radical(HO^(·))production by pyrite under estuarine environmental conditions is still poorly understood.The batch experiments were performed to investigate the effects of estuarine conditions including aging(in air,in water),seawater anions(Cl^(-),Br^(-)and HCO_(3)^(-))and light on the HO^(·)production by pyrite oxidation.The one-electron transfer dominated the process from O_(2) to HO^(·)induced by oxidation of pyrite.The Fe(oxyhydr)oxide coatings on the surface of pyrite aged in air and water consumed hydrogen peroxide while mediating the electron transfer,and the combined effect of the two resulted in a suppression of HO^(·)production in the early stage of aging and a promotion of HO^(·)production in the later stage of aging.Corrosion of the surface oxide layers by aggressive anions was the main reason for the inhibition of HO^(·)production by Cl^(-)and Br^(-),and the generation of Cl^(·)and Br^(·)may also play a role in the scavenging of HO^(·).HCO_(3)^(-)increased the average rate of HO^(·)production through surface-CO_(2) complexes formed by adsorption on the surface of pyrite.The significant enhancement of HO^(·)production under light was attributed to the formation of photoelectrons induced by photochemical reactions on pyrite and its surface oxide layers.These findings provide new insights into the environmental chemical behavior of pyrite in the estuary and enrich the understanding of natural remediation of estuarine environments.

Realizing the hydrogen economy by water electrolysis is an attractive approach for hydrogen production,while the efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts under high current densities are the bottleneck that limits the half-cell reactions of water splitting.Here,we propose an approach of hydrothermal and thermal annealing methods for robust MoO_(2)/MoNi_(4)@Ru/RuO_(2) heterogeneous cuboid array electrocatalyst with multiplying surface-active sites by depositing a monolayer amount of Ru.Benefiting from abundant MoO_(2)/MoNi_(4)@Ru/RuO_(2)heterointerfaces,MoO_(2)/MoNi_(4)@Ru/RuO_(2) heterogeneous cuboid array electrocatalysts effectively drive the alkaline water splitting with superior hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER)performances.The synthesized MoO_(2)/MoNi_(4)@Ru/RuO_(2) has high HER activity,which realizes the working overpotentials of 48 mV at 50 mA·cm^(-2),further achieving overpotentials of 230 mv for industry-level 1000 mA·cm^(-2) in alkaline water electrolysis.Moreover,it also showed an enhanced OER activity than commercial RuO_(2) with a small overpotential of 280 mV at 200 mA·cm^(-2) in alkaline media.When building an electrolyzer with electrodes of(-)MoO_(2)/MoNi_(4)@Ru/RuO_(2)IIMo02/MoNig@Ru/RuO_(2)(+),a cell voltage of 1.63 V and 1.75 V is just required to support the current density of 200 mA·cm^(-2) and 500 mA-cm^(-2) in alkaline water electrolysis,much lower than that of the electrolyzer of(-)Pt/CIIRuO_(2)(+).This work demonstrates that MoO_(2)/MoNig@Ru/RuO_(2) heterogeneous nanosheet arrays are promising candidates for industrial water electrolysis applications,providing a possibility for the exploration of water electrolysis with a large currentdensity.

Sweet potato leaf tips have high nutritional value,and exploring the differences in the metabolic profiles of leaf tips among different sweet potato varieties can provide information to improve their qualities.In this study,a UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap/MS-based untargeted metabolomics method was used to evaluate the metabolites in leaf tips of 32 sweet potato varieties.Three varieties with distinct overall metabolic profiles(A01,A02,and A03),two varieties with distinct profiles of phenolic acids(A20 and A18),and three varieties with distinct profiles of flavonoids(A05,A12,and A16)were identified.In addition,a total of 163 and 29 differentially expressed metabolites correlated with the color and leaf shape of sweet potato leaf tips,respectively,were identified through morphological characterization.Group comparison analysis of the phenotypic traits and a metabolite-phenotypic trait correlation analysis indicated that the color differences of sweet potato leaf tips were markedly associated with flavonoids.Also,the level of polyphenols was correlated with the leaf shape of sweet potato leaf tips,with lobed leaf types having higher levels of polyphenols than the entire leaf types.The findings on the metabolic profiles and differentially expressed metabolites associated with the morphology of sweet potato leaf tips can provide useful information for breeding sweet potato varieties with higher nutritional value.

Developing cost-effective,robust and stable non-precious metal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) is of paramount importance for electrochemical energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries.Although Fe-N-C single atom catalysts(SACs) have been hailed as the most promising candidate due to the optimal binding strength of ORR intermediates on the Fe-N_(4) sites,they suffer from serious mass transport limitations as microporous templates/substrates,i.e.,zeolitic imidazolate frameworks(ZIFs),are usually employed to host the active sites.Motivated by this challenge,we herein develop a hydrogen-bonded organic framework(HOF)-assisted pyrolysis strategy to construct hierarchical micro/mesoporous carbon nanoplates for the deposition of atomically dispersed Fe-N_(4) sites.Such a design is accomplished by employing HOF nanoplates assembled from 2-aminoterephthalic acid(NH_(2)-BDC) and p-phenylenediamine(PDA) as both soft templates and C,N precursors.Benefitting from the structural merits inherited from HOF templates,the optimized catalyst(denoted as Fe-N-C SAC-950) displays outstanding ORR activity with a high half-wave potential of 0.895 V(vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)) and a small overpotential of 356 mV at 10 mA cm^(-2) for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).More excitingly,its application potential is further verified by delivering superb rechargeability and cycling stability with a nearly unfading charge-discharge gap of 0.72 V after 160 h.Molecular dynamics(MD) simulations reveal that micro/mesoporous structure is conducive to the rapid mass transfer of O_(2),thus enhancing the ORR performance.In situ Raman results further indicate that the conversion of O_(2) to~*O_(2)-the rate-determining step(RDS) for Fe-N-C SAC-950.This work will provide a versatile strategy to construct single atom catalysts with desirable catalytic properties.

Sex-biased single-cell genetic landscape in mice with autism spectrum disorder

Autistic spectrum disorder(ASD)is a male-biased,heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 1%e2%of the population.Prenatal exposure to valproic acid(VPA)is a recognized risk factor for ASD,but the cellular and molecular basis of VPA-induced ASD at the single-cell resolution is unclear.Here,we aim to compare the cellular and molecular differences in the hippocampus between male and female prenatal mice with ASD at the single-cell transcriptomic level.The transcriptomes of more than 45,000 cells are assigned to 12 major cell types,including neurons,glial cells,vascular cells,and immune cells.Cell type-specific genes with altered expression after prenatal VPA exposure are analyzed,and the largest number of differentially expressed genes(DEGs)are found in neurons,choroid plexus epithelial cells,and microglia.In microglia,several pathways related to inflammation are found in both males and females,including the tumor necrosis factor(TNF),nuclear factor kappa B(NF-kB),toll-like receptor(TLR),and mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)signaling pathways,which are important for the induction of autistic-like behavior.Additionally,we note that several X-linked genes,including Bex1,Bex3,and Gria3,were among the male-specific DEGs of neurons.This pioneering study describes the landscape of the transcriptome in the hippocampus of autistic mice.The elucidation of sexual differences could provide innovative strategies for the prevention and treatment of ASD.

Corrosion of Duplex Stainless Steel Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Critical Review

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a commonly used additive manufacturing (AM) method for efficiently producing intricate geometric components. This investigation examines factors such as pores, cellular structure, grain size, and inclusions from the manufacturing process that contribute to the corrosion resistance of LPBF DSS. Furthermore, the as-built LPBF duplex stainless steel (DSS) is primarily ferrite due to the rapid cooling process. Therefore, the transformation of ferrite to austenite after various heat treatments in LPBF DSS and its corresponding corrosion resistance are presented. Additionally, a new mixed powder method is proposed to increase the austenite content in the as-built LPBF DSS. This review also focuses on the passivation capability and pitting corrosion performance in LPBF and conventional DSS. This article summarizes the variations in microstructure between as-built and heat-treated LPBF DSS, with their impacts on corrosion resistance, offering insights for manufacturing highly corrosion-resistant LPBF DSS.

Global,regional,and national burden of hypertensive heart disease among older adults in 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019:a trend analysis

Background:Hypertensive heart disease(HHD)poses a public health challenge,but data on its burden and trends among older adults are scarce.This study aimed to identify trends in the burden of HHD among older adults between 1990 and 2019 at the global,regional,and national levels.Methods:Using the Global Burden of Diseases study 2019 data,we assessed HHD prevalence,death,and disability-adjusted life-year(DALY)rates for individuals aged 60-89 years at the global,regional,and national levels and estimated their average annual percentage changes(AAPCs)between 1990 and 2019 using joinpoint regression analysis.Results:In 2019,there were 14.35 million HHD prevalent cases,0.85 million deaths,and 14.56 million DALYs in older adults.Between 1990 and 2019,the prevalence of HHD increased globally{AAPC,0.38(95%confidence interval[CI],0.36,0.41)}with decreases observed in mortality(AAPC,-0.83[95%CI,-0.99,-0.66])and the DALY rate(AAPC,-1.03[95%CI,-1.19,-0.87]).This overall global trend pattern was essentially maintained for sex,age group,and sociodemographic index(SDI)quintile except for non-significant changes in the prevalence of HHD in those aged 70-74 years and in the middle SDI quintile.Notably,males had a higher HHD prevalence rate.However,HHD-related mortality and the DALY rate were higher in females.The middle SDI quintile experienced the largest decreases in mortality and the DALY rate,with a non-significant decline in prevalence between 1990 and 2019.There were significant discrepancies in the HHD burden and its trends across regions and countries.Conclusions:In the past three decades,there has been an overall increasing trend in the prevalence of HHD among older adults worldwide despite decreasing trends in mortality and the DALY rate.Better management of hypertension,and prevention and control of HHD are needed in older adults.

Three-Dimensional Density Distribution and Seismic Activity along the Guxiang–Tongmai Segment of the Jiali Fault,Tibet

The Guxiang-Tongmai segment of the Jiali fault is situated northeast of the Namche Barwa Syntaxis in northeastern Tibet.It is one of the most active strike-slip faults near the syntaxis and plays a pivotal role in the examination of seismic activity within the eastern Himalayan Syntaxis.New study in the research region has yielded a 1:200000 gravity dataset covering an area 1500 km^(2).Using wavelet transform multiscale decomposition,scratch analysis techniques,and 3D gravity inversion methods,gravity anomalies,fault distributions,and density structures were determined across various scales.Through the integration of our new gravity data with other geophysical and geological information,our findings demonstrate substantial variations in the overall crustal density within the region,with the fault distribution closely linked to these density fluctuations.Disparities in stratigraphic density are important causes of variations in the capacity of geological formations to endure regional tectonic stress.Earthquakes are predominantly concentrated within the density transition zone and are primarily situated in regions of elevated density.The hanging wall stress within the Guxiang-Tongmai segment of the Jiali fault exhibits a notable concentration,marked by pronounced anisotropy,and is positioned within the density differential zone,which is prone to earthquakes.

Stretchable poly[2]rotaxane elastomers

Mechanically interlocked polymers(MIPs)are promising candidates for the construction of elastomeric materials with desirable mechanical performance on account of their abilities to undergo inherent rotational and translational mechanical movements at the molecular level.However,the investigations on their mechanical properties are lagging far behind their structural fabrication,especially for linear polyrotaxanes in bulk.Herein,we report stretchable poly[2]rotaxane elastomers(PREs)which integrate numerous mechanical bonds in the polymeric backbone to boost macroscopic mechanical properties.Specifically,we have synthesized a hydroxyfunctionalized[2]rotaxane that subsequently participates in the condensation polymerization with diisocyanate to form PREs.Benefitting from the peculiar structural and dynamic characteristics of the poly[2]rotaxane,the representative PRE exhibits favorable mechanical performance in terms of stretchability(∼1200%),Young’s modulus(24.6 MPa),and toughness(49.5 MJ/m^(3)).Moreover,we present our poly[2]rotaxanes as model systems to understand the relationship between mechanical bonds and macroscopic mechanical properties.It is concluded that the mechanical properties of our PREs are mainly determined by the unique topological architectures which possess a consecutive energy dissipation pathway including the dissociation of host−guest interaction and consequential sliding motion of the wheel along the axle in the[2]rotaxane motif.

Li-S batteries(LSBs)have been considering as new and promising energy storage systems because of the high theoretical energy density and low price.Nevertheless,their practical application is inhibited by several factors,including poor electrical conductivity of electrode materials,greatly volumetric variation,as well as the polysulfide formation upon the cycling.To address these problems,it is imperative to develop and design effective and suitable sulfur host anode materials.Metal organic frameworks(MOFs)-based cathode materials,possessing their good conductivity and easy morphology design,have been extensively studied and exhibited enormously potential in LSBs.In this review,a comprehensive overview of MOFs-based sulfur host materials is provided,including their electrochemical reaction mechanisms,related evaluation parameters,and their performances used in LSBs in the past few years.In particular,the recent advances using in-situ characterization technologies for investigating the electrochemical reaction mechanism in LSBs are presented and highlighted.Additionally,the challenges and prospects associated with future research on MOF-related sulfur host materials are discussed.It is anticipated to offer the guidance for the identification of suitable MOFs-based sulfur cathode materials for high-performance LSBs,thereby contributing for the achievement of a sustainable and renewable society.
