Resource manipulation reveals flexible allocation rules to growth and reproduction in a Mediterranean evergreen oak

Aims In plants,resource allocation to growth and reproduction may depart from trade-off expectations if(i)investment in growth and reproduction relies on different resource pools,(ii)allocation to reproduction is dependent upon reaching some growth threshold or(iii)reproduction is developmentally linked to growth,both functions relying on the same resource *** examined the effects of enhanced resource level on patterns of resource allocation to growth and reproduction in holm oak(Quercus ilex ***),a Mediterranean evergreen *** In the experimental year(2003),we manipulated the amount of soil nutrients in autumn(to increase nutrient uptake during shoot elongation in the following spring)and soil water in summer(to increase water uptake during acorn growth).Indicators of growth and male and female reproduction were estimated in the preexperimental(2002),experimental(2003)and post-experimental(2004)*** Findings Fertilized trees produced significantly longer shoots,but the number of female flowers per shoot was not affected by *** production of male catkins was also enhanced by *** did not affect the production of female flowers or abortion *** and female reproduction showed no consistent relationship in untreated trees,but resource addition elicited a growth-female reproduction trade-off in the experimental *** sign of this significant relationship changed in the post-experimental year,indicating the existence of lagged effects of resource manipulation on acorn ***,patterns of allocation to growth and reproduction varied as a function of sex,resource availability and year,a result consistent with extreme allocational plasticity in holm oak.

The role of the cytokines in the pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation syndrome

AIM:To examine the mechanism of the development of pseudoexfoliation (PSX) syndrome via both cytokine formation and endothelial vasorelaxing and growth factors that will provide us new therapeutic insights for the treatment. METHODS:This is a cross sectional study included two groups; Group 1:control patients with nuclear cataract(n =20, aged 51-80 years). Group 2:PSX patients with nuclear cataract (n=18, aged 50-90 years). Patients with other ophthalmic problems and systemic diseases were excluded. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and nitrotyrosine levels were determined through serum samples by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. nitrite-nitrate levels were measured with photometric endpoint determination. RESULTS:There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of age, VEGF, IL-1β, nitrite-nitrate and nitrotyrosine. The significant results were the mean IL-6 levels that were higher in PSX group 2 (37.68± 29.52 pg/mL) compared to that in control group 1 (15.32± 10.08 pg/mL) (P nCLUSIOn:Several interacting and extending biochemical pathways may lead to the promotion of VEGF and IL-6 expressions. IL-6 which is the only altered marker in our study may indirectly cause an increase of vascular permeability and neovascularization. We suggest inflammation as a factor that can be involved in etiopathogenesis of PSX.

Plants contain various factors that transiently interact with subunits or intermediates of the thylakoid multiprotein complexes, promoting their stable association and integration. Hence, assembly factors are essential for chloroplast development and the transition from heterotrophic to phototrophic growth. Snowy cotyledon 2 （SCO2） is a DnAJ-like protein involved in thylakoid membrane biogenesis and interacts with the light-harvesting chlorophyll-binding protein LHCBI. In Arabidopsis thaliana, SCO2 function was previ- ously reported to be restricted to cotyledons. Here we show that disruption of SC02 in Lotus japonicus results not only in paler cotyledons but also in variegated true leaves. Furthermore, smaller and pale- green true leaves can also be observed in A. thaliana sco2 （atsco2） mutants under short-day conditions. In both species, SCO2 is required for proper accumulation of PSlI-LHCll complexes. In contrast to other variegated mutants, inhibition of chloroplastic translation strongly affects L. japonicus sco2 mutant devel- opment and fails to suppress their variegated phenotype. Moreover, inactivation of the suppressor of variegation AtClpR1 in the atsco2 background results in an additive double-mutant phenotype with variegated true leaves. Taken together, our results indicate that SCO2 plays a distinct role in PSll assembly or repair and constitutes a novel factor involved in leaf variegation.

Cytokine profile in Egyptian hepatitis C virus genotype-4 in relation to liver disease progression

AIM: To observe the imbalance between T helper cell Th1 and Th2 cytokines in several chronic hepatitis disease at different stages of disease ***: We measured the cytokine levels of Th1 (IL-2 and IL-2R), Th2 (IL-10) and the pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and IL-6R and TnF and TnF-RⅠ and Ⅱ)by the ELISA technique in the sera of 33 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and 20 chronic liver disease (CLD) patients. In addition, 20 asymptomatic hepatitis C virus carriers and 20 healthy subjects negative for hepatitis C virus(HCV) markers served as ***: Anti-HCV antibodies were found to be positive in 94% of HCC cases and 75% of CLD *** the other hand, HCV viremia was detected using RTPCR in 67% of HCC cases and 65% of CLD cases. HBsAg was positive in 9% of HCC cases and 30% of CLD *** bilharzial-Ab was positive in 55% of HCC cases,65% of CLD cases and in 70% of asymptomatic carriers (ASC). HCC patients had significantly higher values of IL-2R, TnF-RⅡ (P＜0.001), and TnF-RⅠ (P＞0.05), but lower TnFα (P＜0.001) and IL-6 (P = 0.032) in comparison to ASC. But, in comparison to non-cancer controls, HCC patients had higher values of IL-2R, IL-6R, TnF-RⅠ and TnF-RⅡ, but lower TnF-α (P＜0.001). CLD patients had higher IL-2R, TnF-RⅠ, and TnF-RⅡ (P＜0.001) than ASC. But, in comparison to non-cancer controls, CLD patients had higher values of IL-2R, TnF-RⅠ and TnF-RⅡ, but lower TnF-α (P＜0.001). IL-10 was higher (though not significantly) in HCC and CLD patients than in symptomatic carriers and non-cancer ***: Liver disease progression from CLD to HCC due to HCV genotype-4 infection is associated with an imbalance between Th1 and Th2 cytokines. IL-2R,TnF-RⅠ, and TnF-RⅡ could be used as potential markers.

This study deals with the enhanced solubilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) such as phenanthrene(PHE) and fluorene(FLR) in a pure cationic gemini(G6) and three conventional surfactants [polyethylene glycol dodecyl ether(Brij35), cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB) and sodium lauryl sulfate(SDS)] as well as in their equimolar binary combinations(G6-Brij35, G6-CTAB and G6-SDS). Their solubilization efficiency toward PHE and FLR has been quantified in terms of the molar solubilization ratio(MSR) and the micelle–water partition coefficient(Km). The ideality/nonideality of the mixed micelles is discussed with the help of Clint,Rubingh and Rosen's approaches. These theories determine the deviation of experimental critical micelle concentration(CMC) values from ideal critical micelle concentration, which was measured by evaluating the interaction parameters(βmand βσ). negative values of βmwere observed in all the equimolar binary systems, which show synergism in the mixed micelles. Whereas at air/liquid interface synergism was observed in the systems G6-CTAB and G6-Brij35; G6-SDS exhibited an antagonistic effect. The order of MSR and Kmwas G6-CTAB n G6-Brij35 n G6-SDS for phenanthrene as well as for fluorene.

TX-114+TBAB体系中非电解质对CP的影响(英文)

The effects of nonelectrolytes (ureas, amino acids, sugars) on the cloud point (CP) of nonionic surfactant Triton X-114 (TX-114) and tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB) system were studied. Ureas as well as thioureas increased the CP. Behaviors of amino acids depended upon their nature. nonpolar and uncharged polar amino acids were less effective in changing the CP. However, tryptophan and phenylalanine increased the CP sharply. Acidic amino acid (aspartic acid) and sugars decreased the CP. The results were explained in terms of their effect on water structure. Amino acids got solubilized either in the micellar interior or in the bulk phase.

Synthesis and Tribological Behaviors of Ti_3SiC_2 Material Prepared by Vacuum Sintering Technique

The bulk Ti3SiC2 specimens with less than 1 wt% TiC impurity were prepared by vacuum sintering technique, and the average grain size was about 5-6 μm in the elongated direction. When the sintering temperature, soaking time and heating rate were 1 400 ℃, 1 h and 10℃·min-1, respectively, the highest relative density of Ti3SiC2 specimens could reach 97.8%. Meanwhile, the lowest coefficient of friction （COF） and wear rate （WR） of the Ti3SiC2 samples were 0.55 and 1.37×10-3 mm3（nm）-1 at a sliding speed of 0.35 m/s, load pressure of 10 n and ambient condition, respectively. The COF of the Ti3SiC2 sample reduced with the increasing of the load pressure, while the WRs fluctuated little. The WR increased with the increasing of the sliding speed, and weakly influenced the COF. These changing behaviors could be attributed to the presence and coverage of the amorphous mixture oxide film ofTi, Si, A1, and Fe on the Ti3SiC2 friction surface. The self- antifriction mechanism led to reducing of the COF. The increasing of the WR was attributed to the wearing consumption.

Involvement of Quebracho tannins in diet alters productive and reproductive efficiency of postpartum buffalo cows

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of 10 weeks supplementation of Quebracho tannins(QT; 0 [control], 100 [QT100] or 200 g/[cow$d] [QT_(200)]) to 30 multiparous postpartum buffalo cows(10 cows per group) on milk yield and composition, blood metabolites and reproductive *** of QT100 had no significant effect on milk yield, whereas QT_(200) decreased(P ntrol group, both QT levels decreased(P no significant effects were found on percentages of milk fat and protein. Contrariwise, yields of milk fat, lactose and milk protein were decreased(P n QT_(200) was supplemented. The solids nonfat(SnF) percentage and yield were decreased(P ntation. Moreover, QT tended to numerically reduce total number of ovarian follicles, number of small follicles, peripheral progesterone concentration and conception rate. Supplementation of QT_(200) numerically increased number of large follicles, mean diameter of large follicle, number and diameters of corpora lutea. The inclusion of QT_(200) shortened days open(DO) and decreased number of services per ***, QT did not show significant effects on serum total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose,cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations. Supplementation of QT100 caused an increase(P n control and QT_(200) groups. Generally, QT decreased(P nine concentration. Therefore, the supplementation of a commercial QT to early lactating Egyptian buffalo cows displayed negative consequences on their productive and reproductive performances.
