Aqueous electrochemical delithiation of cathode materials as a strategy to selectively recover lithium from waste lithium-ion batteries

Lithium recovery from end-of-life Li-ion batteries(LIBs)through pyro-and hydrometallurgical recycling processes involves several refining stages,with high consumption of reagents and energy.A competitive technological alternative is the electrochemical oxidation of the cathode materials,whereby lithium can be deintercalated and transferred to an electrolyte solution without the aid of chemical extracting compounds.This article investigates the potential to selectively recover Li from LIB cathode materials by direct electrochemical extraction in aqueous solutions.The process allowed to recovering up to 98%of Li from high-purity commercial cathode materials(LiMn_(2)O_(4),LiCoO_(2),and Li Ni_(1/3)Mn_(1/3)Co_(1/3)O_(2))with a faradaic efficiency of 98%and negligible co-extraction of Co,Ni,and Mn.The process was then applied to recover Li from the real waste LIBs black mass obtained by the physical treatment of electric vehicle battery packs.This black mass contained graphite,conductive carbon,and metal impurities from current collectors and steel cases,which significantly influenced the evolution and performances of Li electrochemical extraction.Particularly,due to concomitant oxidation of impurities,lithium extraction yields and faradaic efficiencies were lower than those obtained with high-purity cathode materials.Copper oxidation was found to occur within the voltage range investigated,but it could not quantitatively explain the reduced Li extraction performances.In fact,a detailed investigation revealed that above 1.3 V vs.Ag/Ag Cl,conductive carbon can be oxidized,contributing to the decreased Li extraction.Based on the reported experimental results,guidelines were provided that quantitatively enable the extraction of Li from the black mass,while preventing the simultaneous oxidation of impurities and,consequently,reducing the energy consumption of the proposed Li recovery method.

Repairs of corroded high-pressure pipelines are essential for fluids transportation under high pressure.One of the methods used in their repairs is the use of layered composites.The composite used must have the necessary strength.Therefore,the experiments and analytical solutions presented in this paper are performed according to the relevant standards and codes,including ASME PCC-2,ASME B31.8S,ASME B31.4,ISO 24817 and ASME B31.G.In addition,the experimental tests are replicated numerically using the finite element method.Setting the strain gauges at different distances from the defect location,can reduce the nonlinear effects,deformation,and fluctuations due to the high pressure.The direct relationship between the depth of an axial defect and the stress concentration is observed at the inner side edges of the defect.Composite reparation reduces the non-linearities related to the sharp variation of the geometry and a more reliable numerical simulation could be performed.

The number of students demanding computer science(CS)education is rapidly rising,and while faculty sizes are also growing,the traditional pipeline consisting of a CS major,a CS master’s,and then a move to industry or a Ph.D.program is simply not scalable.To address this problem,the Department of Computing at the University of Illinois has introduced a multidisciplinary approach to computing,which is a scalable and collaborative approach to capitalize on the tremendous demand for computer science education.The key component of the approach is the blended major,also referred to as“CS+X”,where CS denotes computer science and X denotes a non-computing field.These CS+X blended degrees enable win-win partnerships among multiple subject areas,distributing the educational responsibilities while growing the entire university.To meet the demand from non-CS majors,another pathway that is offered is a graduate certificate program in addition to the traditional minor program.To accommodate the large number of students,scalable teaching tools,such as automatic graders,have also been developed.

At the panel session of the 3rd Global Forum on the Development of Computer Science,attendees had an opportunity to deliberate recent issues affecting computer science departments as a result of the recent growth in the field.6 heads of university computer science departments participated in the discussions,including the moderator,Professor Andrew Yao.The first issue was how universities are managing the growing number of applicants in addition to swelling class sizes.Several approaches were suggested,including increasing faculty hiring,implementing scalable teaching tools,and working closer with other departments through degree programs that integrate computer science with other fields.The second issue was about the position and role of computer science within broader science.Participants generally agreed that all fields are increasingly relying on computer science techniques,and that effectively disseminating these techniques to others is a key to unlocking broader scientific progress.

The work presented here focused on the extraction of gold (Au), silver (Ag) and palladium (Pd) from electronic waste using a solution of ammonium thiosulfate. Thiosulfate was used as a valid alternative to cyanide for precious metal extractions, due to its non-toxicity and high selectivity. The interactions between sodium thiosulfate, total ammonia/ammonium, precious metal concentrations and the particle size of the waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) were studied by the response surface methodology (RSM) and the principal component analysis (PCA) to maximize precious metal mobilization. Au extraction reached a high efficiency with a granulometry of less than 0.25 mm, but the consumption of reagents was high. On the other hand, Ag extraction depended neither on thiosulfate/ammonia concentration nor granulometry of WPCBs and it showed efficiency of 90% also with the biggest particle size (0.50 < Ø < 1.00 mm). Pd extraction, similarly to Au, showed the best efficiency with the smallest and the medium WPCB sizes, but required less reagents compared to Au. The results showed that precious metal leaching is a complex process (mainly for Au, which requires more severe conditions in order to achieve high extraction efficiencies) correlated with reagent concentrations, precious metal concentrations and WPCB particle sizes. These results have great potentiality, suggesting the possibility of a more selective recovery of precious metals based on the different granulometry of the WPCBs. Furthermore, the high extraction efficiencies obtained for all the metals bode well in the perspective of large-scale applications.

Branched chain amino acids in hepatic encephalopathy and sarcopenia in liver cirrhosis:Evidence and uncertainties

Liver cirrhosis is commonly associated with nutritional alterations,reported in 20% of patients with compensated disease and over 60% of patients with decompensated cirrhosis.Nutritional disturbances are associated with a worse prognosis and increased risk of complication.Serum levels of branched-chain amino acids(BCAAs)are decreased in patients with liver cirrhosis.The imbalance of amino acids levels has been suggested to be associated with the development of complications,such as hepatic encephalopathy and sarcopenia,and to affect the clinical presentation and prognosis of these patients.Several studies investigated the efficacy of BCAAs supplementation as a therapeutic option in liver cirrhosis,but uncertainties remain about the real efficacy,the best route of administration,and dosage.

Background Vitamin D(25-OHD)has a role in bone health after treatment for cancer.25-OHD deficiency has been associated with risk factors for cardiovascular disease,but no data focusing on this topic in childhood cancer survivors have been published.We investigated the 25-OHD status in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL),and evaluated its influence on vascular function.Methods 25-OHD levels were evaluated in 52 ALL survivors and 40 matched healthy controls.Patients were grouped according to 25-OHD level(<20 ng/m or≥20 ng/ml).Auxological parameters,biochemical and hemostatic markers of endothelial function(AD,HMW-AD,ET-1,vWFAg,TAT,D-dimers,Fbg,and hs-CRP),ultrasound markers of vascular endothelial function(flow-mediated dilatation,FMD,common carotid intima-media thickness,C-IMT,and antero-posterior diameter of infra-renal abdominal aorta,APAO)were evaluated in the patients.Results Cases showed higher prevalence of 25-OHD deficiency than controls(p=0.002).In univariate analysis via mean comparisons,25-OHD deficient(<20 ng/ml)patients showed higher C-IMT values compared to the 25-OHD non-deficient(≥20 ng/ml)group(P=0.023).Significant differences were also found for ET-1(P=0.035)and AD-HMW(P=0.015).In the multiple regression models controlling for some confounders,25-OHD still was associated with C-IMT(P=0.0163),ET-1(P=0.0077),and AD-HMW(P=0.0008).Conclusions Childhood ALL survivors show higher prevalence of 25-OHD deficiency as compared to controls.The 25-OHD levels appear to be linked to indicators of endothelial and vascular dysfunction.Careful monitoring of 25-OHD balance may help to prevent cardiovascular diseases in childhood ALL survivors,characterized by high cardiovascular risk.

The majority of patients infected with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-COrona-Virus-2(SARS-CoV-2)either completely recover from symptoms in a few days or stay asymptomatic.[1−3]Nevertheless,a consistent proportion of subjects with a history of probable or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection refers persistency,new occurrence,relapse,or fluctuation of symptoms,and these manifestations are defined as post-COVID-19 condition.[4]Of note,the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 include several cardiac manifestations,including direct myocardial and pericardial injury/inflammation,as well as cardiomyopathies and arrythmias,sustained by viral infiltration and/or dysregulation of adaptive immune response.[5]Even though rare,acute myocarditis may be an important post-COVID-19 condition and may be associated with the occurrence of new-onset atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND Incidence of gallstones in those aged≥80 years is as high as 38%-53%.The decision-making process to select those oldest old patients who could benefit from cholecystectomy is challenging.AIM To assess the risk of morbidity of the“oldest-old”patients treated with cholecystectomy in order to provide useful data that could help surgeons in the decision-making process leading to surgery in this population.METHODS A retrospective study was conducted between 2010 and 2019.Perioperative variables were collected and compared between patients who had postoperative complications.A model was created and tested to predict severe postoperative morbidity.RESULTS The 269 patients were included in the study(193 complicated).The 9.7%of complications were grade 3 or 4 according to the Clavien-Dindo classification.Bilirubin levels were lower in patients who did not have any postoperative complications.American Society of Anesthesiologists scale 4 patients,performing a choledocholithotomy and bilirubin levels were associated with Clavien-Dindo>2 complications(P<0.001).The decision curve analysis showed that the proposed model had a higher net benefit than the treating all/none options between threshold probabilities of 11%and 32%of developing a severe complication.CONCLUSION Patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists scale 4,higher level of bilirubin and need of choledocholithotomy are at the highest risk of a severely complicated postoperative course.Alternative endoscopic or percutaneous treatments should be considered in this subgroup of octogenarians.
