Temporal and Spatial Requirement of EMF1 Activity for Arabidopsis Vegetative and Reproductive Development

EMBRYONIC FLOWER （EMF） genes are required to maintain vegetative development via repression of flower homeotic genes in Arabidopsis. Removal of EMF gene function caused plants to flower upon germination, producing abnormal and sterile flowers. The pleiotropic effect of ernfl mutation suggests its requirement for gene programs involved in diverse developmental processes. Transgenic plants harboring EMF1 promoter：：glucuronidase （GUS） reporter gene were generated to investigate the temporal and spatial expression pattern of EMF1. These plants displayed differential GUS activity in vegetative and flower tissues, consistent with the role of EMF1 in regulating multiple gene programs. EMFI：：GUS expression pattern in emf mutants suggests organ-specific auto-regulation. Sense- and antisense （as） EMF1 cDNA were expressed under the control of stage- and tissue-specific promoters in transgenic plants. Characterization of these transgenic plants showed that EMF1 activity is required in meristematic as well as differentiating tissues to rescue emf mutant phenotype. Temporal removal or reduction of EMF1 activity in the embryo or shoot apex of wild-type seedlings was sufficient to cause early flowering and terminal flower formation in adult plants. Such reproductive cell memory is reflected in the flower MADS-box gene activity expressed prior to flowering in these early flowering plants. However, temporal removal of EMF1 activity in flower meristem did not affect flower development. Our results are consistent with EMF1＇s primary role in repressing flowering in order to allow for vegetative growth.

Morphing wing flaps for large civil aircraft:Evolution of a smart technology across the Clean Sky program

Abstract Morphing wing structures are widely considered among the most promising technologies for the improvement of aerodynamic performances in large civil *** controlled adaptation of the wing shape to external operative conditions naturally enables the maximization of aircraft aerodynamic efficiency,with positive fallouts on the amount of fuel burned and pollutant *** benefits brought by morphing wings at aircraft level are accompanied by the criticalities of the enabling technologies,mainly involving weight penalties,overconsumption of electrical power,and safety *** attempt to solve such criticalities passes through the development of novel design approaches,ensuring the consolidation of reliable structural solutions that are adequately mature for certification and in-flight *** this work,the development phases of a multimodal camber morphing wing flap,tailored for large civil aircraft applications,are outlined with specific reference to the activities addressed by the author in the framework of the Clean Sky *** flap is morphed according to target shapes depending on aircraft flight conditions and defined to enhance high-lift performances during takeoff and landing,as well as wing aerodynamic efficiency during *** innovative system based on finger-like robotic ribs driven by electromechanical actuators is proposed as morphing-enabling technology;the maturation process of the device is then traced from the proof of concept to the consolidation of a true-scale demonstrator for pre-flight ground validation tests.A step-by-step approach involving the design and testing of intermediate demonstrators is then carried out to show the compliance of the adaptive system with industrial standards and safety *** technical issues encountered during the development of each intermediate demonstrator are critically analyzed,and justifications are provided for all the adopted engineering ***,the layout

Linear infrastructures(e.g.,roads,railways,pipelines,and powerlines)pose a serious threat to wildlife,due to the risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions(roadkills).The placement of mitigation measures,such as crossing structures,should consider species’life cycles and ecological *** an assessment would require data collection over large areas,which may be possible by employing citizen *** this study,we aimed to identify spatiotemporal trends of roadkill occurrence using citizen science data from one of the most urbanized and biodiversityrich regions of *** trends were analyzed using generalized additive models,while landscape patterns were assessed by identifying significant thresholds over land cover gradients,related to increases in relative roadkill abundance,by employing threshold indicator taxa *** approach recorded a total of 529 roadkills,including 33 different species,comprising 13 mammal,10 bird,6 reptile,and 2 amphibian *** analysis indicated significant temporal trends for the red fox,the European hedgehog,the stone marten and the European badger,with peaks in roadkill occurrence between the winter and spring *** roadkill abundance increased mostly in landscapes with anthropogenic land cover classes,such as complex cultivations,orchards,or urban *** results allowed us to develop a map of potential roadkill risk that could assist in planning the placement of mitigation *** science contributions from highly populated areas allowed data collection over a large area and a dense road network,and also directly led to the evaluation of management decisional options.

Potential impact of genetically modified Lepidoptera-resistant Brassica napus in biodiversity hotspots： Sicily as a theoretical model

The general increase of the cultivation and trade of Bt transgenic plants resis- tant to Lepidoptera pests raises concerns regarding the conservation of animal and plant biodiversity. Demand for biofuels has increased the cultivation and importation of oilseed rape （Brassica napus L.）, including transgenic lines. In environmental risk assessments （ERAs） for its potential future cultivation as well as for food and feed uses, the impact on wild Brassicaeae relatives and on non-target Lepidoptera should be assessed. Here we consider the potential exposure of butterflies as results of possible cultivation or natural- ization of spilled seed in Sicily （Italy）. Diurnal Lepidoptera, which are pollinators, can be exposed directly to the insecticidal proteins as larvae （mainly of Pieridae） through the host and through the pollen that can deposit on other host plants. Adults can be exposed via pollen and nectar. The flight periods of butterflies were recorded, and they were found to overlap for about 90% of the flowering period ofB. napus for the majority of the species. In addition, B. napus has a high potential to hybridise with endemic taxa belonging to the B. oleracea group. This could lead to an exposure of non-target Lepidoptera if introgression of the Bt gene into a wild population happens. A rank of the risk for butterflies and wild relatives of oilseed rape is given. We conclude that, in environmental risk assessments, attention should be paid to plant-insect interaction especially in a biodiversity hotspot such as Sicily.

Use of two-surfactants mixtures to attain specific HLB values for assisted TPH-diesel biodegradation

In a surfactant assisted biodegradation process, the choice of surfactant(s) is of crucial importance. The question is: does the type of surfactant(i.e. chemical family) affect the biodegradation process at fixed hidrophillic-lypofillic balance(HLB) values? Microcosm assessments were developed using contaminated soil, with around of 5000 mg/kg of hydrocarbons as TPH-diesel. Mixtures of three nonionic surfactants were employed to get a wide range of specific HLB values. Tween20 and Span20 were mixed in the appropriate proportions to get HLB values between 8.6 and 16.7. Tween/Span60 mixtures reached HLB values between 4.7 and 14.9. Finally, Tween/Span80 combinations yielded HLB values between 4.3 and 15. TPH-diesel biodegradation was measured at the beginning, and after 8 weeks, as well as the FCU/gr soil, as a measure of microorganisms′ development during the biodegradation period. A second aim of this work was to assess the use of guar gum as a biodegradation enhancer instead of synthetic products. The conclusions of this work are that surfactant chemical family, and not only the HLB value clearly affects the assisted biodegradation rate. Surfactant's synergism was clearly observed. Regarding the use of guar gum, no biodegradation enhancement was observed for the three assessed concentrations, i.e., 2, 20, and 200 mg/kg, respectively. On the contrary, TPH-diesel removal was lower as the gum concentration increased. It is quite possible that guar gum was used as a microbial substrate.

Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with both overlapping and distinct clinical, pathological and biomolecular features. It has been suggested that pediatric IBD is a distinct disease entity, with probably different disease *** aim of this study is to review and summarize the evolution of the current concept of pediatric IBD. The results of this review reinforce the idea that pediatric CD and UC may be further classified in various clinicopathologic entities. For clinicians and pathologists convenience, practical algorithms for the distinction of the various subphenotypes of pediatric IBD are also provided.

Lyapunov stability of competitive cells dynamics in tumor mechanobiology

Poromechanics plays a key role in modelling hard and soft tissue behaviours,by providing a thermodynamic framework in which chemo-mechanical mutual interactions among fluid and solid constituents can be consistently rooted,at different scale *** this context,how different biological species(including cells,extra-cellular components and chemical metabolites)interplay within complex environments is studied for characterizing the mechanobiology of tumor growth,governed by intra-tumoral residual stresses that initiate mechanotransductive processes deregulating normal tissue homeostasis and leading to tissue *** the coupling between tumor poroelasticity and interspecific competitive dynamics has recently highlighted how microscopic cells and environment interactions influence growth-associated stresses and tumor pathophysiology,the nonlinear interlacing among biochemical factors and mechanics somehow hindered the possibility of gaining qualitative insights into cells *** by this,in the present work we recover the linear poroelasticity in order to benefit of a reduced complexity,so first deriving the well-known Lyapunov stability criterion from the thermodynamic dissipation principle and then analysing the stability of the mechanical competition among cells fighting for common space and resources during cancer growth and *** the end,the linear poroelastic model enriched by interspecific dynamics is also exploited to show how growth anisotropy can alter the stress field in spherical tumor masses,by thus indirectly affecting cell mechano-sensing.

First month of the epidemic caused by COVID-19 in Italy:current status and realtime outbreak development forecast

Background:The first outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy occurred during the second half of February 2020 in some areas in the North of the *** to the high contagiousness of the infection,further spread by asymptomatic people,Italy has become in a few weeks the country with the greatest number of infected people in the *** large number of severe cases among infected people in Italy led to the hospitalization of thousands of patients,with a heavy burden on the National Health ***:We analyzed data provided daily by Italian Authorities for the period from 24 February 2020 to 30 March *** such information,we developed a forecast model in real-time,based on the cumulative loglogistic ***:A total of 101,739 infected individuals were confirmed until 30 March 2020,of which 14,620 recovered or discharged,and 11,591 *** the same date patients quarantined at home were 43,752,whereas hospitalized patients were 31,776,of which 3981 in intensive *** active cases(*** number of patients not yet recovered until that date)were 75,*** forecast model estimated a number of infected persons for Italy of 234,000 about,and a duration of the epidemic of approximately 4 ***:One month after the first outbreaks there seemed to be the first signs of a decrease in the number of infections,showing that we could be now facing the descending phase of the *** forecast obtained thanks to our model could be used by decision-makers to implement coordinative and collaborative efforts in order to control the *** pandemic due to novel Coronavirus must be a warning for all countries worldwide,regarding a rapid and complete dissemination of information,surveillance,health organization,and cooperation among the states.

Assessing the operational design domain of lane support system for automated vehicles in different weather and road conditions
