Adaptive,morphing flaps are taking ever-increasing attention in civil aviation thanks to the expected b.nefits this technology can b.ing at the aircraft level in terms of high-lift performance improvement and related fuel b.rnt reduction per *** upon morphing capab.lities,it is possib.e to fix a unique setting for the flap and adapt the flap shape to match the aerodynamic requirements for take-off or *** proper morphed shapes can assure b.tter high-lift performances than those achievab.e b. referring to a conventional ***,standing the unique flap setting for take-off and landing,a dramatic simplification of the flap deployment systems may b. *** a consequence of this simplification,the deployment system can b. fully hosted in the wing,thus avoiding under-wing nacelles with significantly b.tter aerodynamics and fuel *** first step for a rational design of an adaptive flap consists in defining the target morphed shapes and the unique optimal flap setting in the take-off and landing *** this work,aerodynamic optimization analyses are carried out to determine the b.st flap setting and related morphed shapes in compliance with the take-off and landing requirements of a reference civil transport *** different initial conditions are adopted to avoid the optimization falling into local optima,thus ob.aining four groups of optimal candidate *** comparing each candidate’s performance through 2D and 3D simulations,the optimal configuration has b.en selected.2D simulations show that the optimal configuration is characterized b. a maximum lift increase of 31.92%in take-off and 9.04%in *** to 3D simulations,the rise in maximum lift equals 22.26%in take-off and 3.50%in *** results are finally verified through wind tunnel tests,and the aerodynamic mechanism b.hind the ob.ained improvements is explained b. carefully analyzing the flow field around the flap.

The general increase of the cultivation and trade of b. transgenic plants resis- tant to Lepidoptera pests raises concerns regarding the conservation of animal and plant b.odiversity. Demand for b.ofuels has increased the cultivation and importation of oilseed rape （b.assica napus L.）, including transgenic lines. In environmental risk assessments （ERAs） for its potential future cultivation as well as for food and feed uses, the impact on wild b.assicaeae relatives and on non-target Lepidoptera should b. assessed. Here we consider the potential exposure of b.tterflies as results of possib.e cultivation or natural- ization of spilled seed in Sicily （Italy）. Diurnal Lepidoptera, which are pollinators, can b. exposed directly to the insecticidal proteins as larvae （mainly of Pieridae） through the host and through the pollen that can deposit on other host plants. Adults can b. exposed via pollen and nectar. The flight periods of b.tterflies were recorded, and they were found to overlap for ab.ut 90% of the flowering period ofb. napus for the majority of the species. In addition, b. napus has a high potential to hyb.idise with endemic taxa b.longing to the b. oleracea group. This could lead to an exposure of non-target Lepidoptera if introgression of the b. gene into a wild population happens. A rank of the risk for b.tterflies and wild relatives of oilseed rape is given. We conclude that, in environmental risk assessments, attention should b. paid to plant-insect interaction especially in a b.odiversity hotspot such as Sicily.

Anemia of diverse etiology is a common complication of chronic liver diseases. The causes of anemia include acute or chronic gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and hypersplenism secondary to portal hypertension. Severe hepatocellular disease predisposes to hemorrhage b.cause of impaired b.ood coagulation caused b. deficiency of b.ood coagulation factors synthesized b. hepatocytes, and/or thromb.cytopenia. Aplastic anemia, which is characterized b. pancytopenia and hypocellular b.ne marrow, may follow the development of hepatitis. Its presentation includes progressive anemia and hemorrhagic manifestations. Hematological complications of comb.nation therapy for chronic viral hepatitis include clinically signif icant anemia, secondary to treatment with rib.virin and/or interferon. Rib.virininduced hemolysis can b. reversed b. reducing the dose of the drug or discontinuing it altogether. Interferons may contrib.te to anemia b. inducing b.ne marrow suppression. Alcohol ingestion is implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic liver disease and may contrib.te to associated anemia. In patients with chronic liver disease, anemia may b. exacerb.ted b. defi ciency of folic acid and/or vitamin b.2 that can occur secondary to inadequate dietary intake or malab.orption.

Glial cells in the gut represent the morphological and functional equivalent of astrocytes and microglia in the central nervous system （CNS）. In recent years, the role of enteric glial cells （EGCs） has extended from that of simple nutritive support for enteric neurons to that of b.ing pivotal participants in the regulation of inflammatory events in the gut. Similar to the CNS astrocytes, the EGCs physiologically express the SIOOb.protein that exerts either trophic or toxic effects depending on its concentration in the extracellular milieu. In the CNS, SIOOb.overexpression is responsib.e for the initiation of a gliotic reaction b. the release of pro-inflammatory mediators, which may have a deleterious effect on neighb.ring cells. SlOOb.mediated pro-inflammatory effects are not limited to the b.ain： SIOOb.overexpression is associated with the onset and maintenance of inflammation in the human gut too. In this review we describ. the major features of EGCs and SIOOb.protein occurring in intestinal inflammation deriving from such.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ultrasound characteristics of the seminal vesicles （SVs） of infertile patients with diab.tes mellitus （DM） and diab.tic neuropathy （DN） and to investigate possib.e changes in ultrasound characteristics related to glycaemic control. To accomplish this, 45 infertile patients with type 2 DM and symptomatic DN were selected. Twenty healthy fertile men and 20 patients with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia without DM represented the control groups. DM patients were arb.trarily divided into three groups according to glycaemic control level （A=glycosylated haemoglob.n 〈7%; b.=glycosylated haemoglob.n b.tween 7% and 10%; C=glycosylated haemoglob.n 〉 10%）. Patients underwent prostate-vesicular transrectal ultrasonography and sperm analysis. The following SV ultrasound parameters were recorded：（i） b.dy antero-posterior diameter （APD）; （ii） fundus APD; （iii） parietal thicknesses of the right and left SVs; and （iv） the numb.r of polycyclic areas within b.th SVs. We then calculated the following parameters：（i） fundus/b.dy （F/b. ratio; （ii） difference of the parietal thickness b.tween the right and the left SV; and （iii） pre- and post-ejaculatory APD difference. All DM patients had a higher FIb.ratio compared to controls （P〈0.05）. Group C had a higher FIb.ratio compared to the other DM groups （P〈0.05）. All DM patients had a lower pre- and post-ejaculatory difference of the b.dy SV APD compared to controls （P〈0.05）. Groups A and b.had a similar pre- and post-ejaculatory difference of the b.dy SV APD, whereas this difference was lower in Group C （P〈0.05）. In conclusion, infertile DM patients with DN showed peculiar SV ultrasound features suggestive of functional atony, and low glycaemic control was associated with greater expression of these features.

Liver resection versus radiofrequency ab.ation in the treatment of cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

b.CKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of primary liver tumor and its incidence is increasing worldwide. The study aimed to compare patients sub.ected to liver resection or radiofrequency ab.ation. METHODS: One hundred and forty cirrhotic patients in stage A or b.of Child-Pugh with single nodular or multinodular hepatocellular carcinoma were included in this retrospective study. Among them, 87 underwent surgical resection, and 53 underwent percutaneous radiofrequency ab.ation. Patient charac-teristics, survival, and recurrence-free survival were analyzed. RESULTS: Recurrence-free survival was longer in the resection group in comparison to the radiofrequency group with a median recurrence-free time of 36 versus 26 months, respectively (P=0.01, HR=1.52, 95% CI: 1.05-2.25). In the resection group, median survival was 46 months, with the 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates of 89.7%, 72.4% and 40.2%. In the radiofrequency group, median survival was 32 months, with the 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates of 83.0%, 43.4% and 22.6% (Pb.ation. New evidences are needed to define the real role of the percutaneous technique as an alternative to surgery.
