Kinematics of whip spider pedipalps: a 3D comparative morpho-functional approach

Amblypygi are tropical and subtropical ambush predators that use elongated,raptorial pedipalps for different *** pedipalp use in predation and courtship has been explored in videography in vivo analyses,kinematic ex vivo examination of these appendages has not been ***,we rectify this lack of data by using microCT scans to 3D-kinematically model the appendage morphology and the range of motion(ROM)of the joints for Damon medius and Heterophrynus *** illustrate the successful application of this technique to terrestrial euarthropods in determining the maximum ROM values for each pedipalp *** also note that,in life,these values would be lower due to motion restricting structures like tendons,arthrodial membranes,and *** further compare our maximum values obtained here with data from video-based motion *** ROM of each joint shows the greatest flexibility in the femur-tibia joint(140–150°),the lowest in the basitarsus-claw joint(35–40°).ROM in the tibia-basitarsus joint is markedly distinct(***:44°;***:105°).This disparity reflects how *** uses the joint in the capture basket,while *** uses the femur-tibia joint to form the capture *** further illustrate notable vertical motion of the *** pedipalp compared to *** difference reflects the retro-ventral trochanter apophysis of *** study opens the possibility to further whip spider kinematic *** of other taxa using this approach will result in a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological significance and ethological implications of this unique arachnid group.

Inhibition effect of 2-amino-5-ethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole on corrosion behaviour of austenitic stainless steel type 304 in dilute HCl solution

The corrosion inhibition of type 304 austenitic stainless steel by 2-amino-5-ethyl-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole(TTD) compound and the electrochemical behaviour in dilute HCl solution were investigated through potentiodynamic polarization test, mass loss techniques and potential measurements. The results show that the organic derivative is highly effective with a maximum inhibition efficiency of 70.22% from mass loss analysis, while 74.2% is obtained from polarization tests. Observation of the scanning electron micrographs shows the absence of corrosion products due to electrochemical influence of TTD on the surface morphology of the steel. X-ray diffractometry reveals the absence of phase compounds and complexes on the steel samples after exposure. TTD adsorption on the steel surface obeys the Langmuir, Frumkin and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Corrosion thermodynamic calculations reveal the inhibition mechanism occurs through chemisorption process and results from statistical analysis depict the strong influence of inhibitor concentration on the electrochemical performance of the TTD.

Self-Powered,Long-Durable,and Highly Selective Oil-Solid Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Energy Harvesting and Intelligent Monitoring

Triboelectric nanogenerators(TENGs)have potential to achieve energy harvesting and condition monitoring of oils,the“lifeblood”of ***,oil absorption on the solid surfaces is a great challenge for oil-solid TENG(O-TENG).Here,oleophobic/superamphiphobic O-TENGs are achieved via engineering of solid surface wetting *** designed O-TENG can generate an excellent electricity(with a charge density of 9.1μC m^(−2) and a power density of 1.23 mW m^(−2)),which is an order of magnitude higher than other O-TENGs made from polytetrafluoroethylene and *** also has a significant durability(30,000 cycles)and can power a digital thermometer for self-powered sensor ***,a superhigh-sensitivity O-TENG monitoring system is successfully developed for real-time detecting particle/water contaminants in *** O-TENG can detect particle contaminants at least down to 0.01 wt%and water contaminants down to 100 ppm,which are much better than previous online monitoring methods(particle>0.1 wt%;water>1000 ppm).More interesting,the developed O-TENG can also distinguish water from other contaminants,which means the developed O-TENG has a highly water-selective *** work provides an ideal strategy for enhancing the output and durability of TENGs for oil-solid contact and opens new intelligent pathways for oil-solid energy harvesting and oil condition monitoring.

Surface Activation of Plane and Curved Automotive Polymer Surfaces by Using a Fittable Multi-Pin DBD Plasma Source

In this work, surface activation of automotive polymers using atmospheric pressure plasmas was investigated. The aim was to increase the polar fraction of the surface energy of both plane and convex polymer devices with a radius in the range of 30 mm. For this purpose, a fittable low temperature atmospheric pressure plasma source based on capacitively coupled multi-pin electrodes was set up and applied. Each single electrode generates a treatment spot of approximately 2 cm2 with a tunable power density of up to 1.4 W/cm2. The surface energy was evaluated by contact angle measurements. After treatment at a low energy density of 1.01 J/cm2, the polar fraction of the surface energy of the investigated polymers was increased by a factor of 3.3 to 132, depending on the polymer materials. It was shown that by applying the presented fittable plasma source, this effect is independent of the surface radius of the polymer sample.

Three new species of Meliolaceae,Appendiculella monsterae on Monstera deliciosa(Araceae),Asteridiella nitidae on Buddleja nitida(Scrophulariaceae),and Irenopsis chrysophylli on Chrysophyllum sp.(Sapotaceae),are described based on material collected in *** species of Meliolaceae are reported for the first time for Panama,which include four first records for the Americas,***,Meliola indica,and ***,previously known only from Asia,and *** hitherto known only from *** species of plants are cited as hosts for meliolaceous fungi for the first *** a phylogenetic hypothesis based on 28S nrDNA sequences,the position of Meliolales,including Appendiculella,Asteridiella,Endomeliola,Irenopsis,and Meliola,is found to be basal to Sordariomycetidae,Hypocreomycetidae,and Xylariomycetidae within *** five genera of Meliolaceae form a strongly supported *** suggest adopting the concept of the subclass *** monophyly of Asteridiella cannot be confirmed.A hypothetical close relationship between Asteridiella and Appendiculella is not supported,but Endomeliola appears closely related to a species of *** Meliola species on the same host family are closely related.

A New Step for a Sustainable and Balanced Urban Policy in Asian Living Historic City Conservation: The Case of Qufu, China

Taking the case of Qufu(birthplace of Confucius), China, a world cultural heritage site and a Chinese living historic city, the author analyses the current situation/issues of culture heritage assessment and the planning of urban conservation, renewal and development. The objective of this article is to explore related issues to generate guidance for selecting appropriate methodologies(strategies) and principles(tools/planning/tasks/action) to assess cultural heritage values and cultural signifi cance in the Asian living historic city context as part of an integrated culture-oriented development planning. The author calls for the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach to realize such development planning, with the participation of researchers and specialists from interdisciplinary areas: city planning, transportation, housing, territory studies, tourism, cultural heritage preservation, history, sociology, economy, archaeology, architecture, anthropology, museum studies, art/aesthetic studies, etc., for a new step in a sustainable and balanced urban policy.

An assessment of direct and indirect effects of climate change for populations of the Rocky Mountain Apollo butterfly （ Parnassius smintheus Doubleday）

Climate change is occurring and insects are responding. Current challenges for ecologists and managers are predicting how organisms will respond to continuing climate change and determining how to mitigate potential negative effects. In contrast to broad scale predictions for climate change involving the distribution of species, in this article we highlight the many ways in which local populations of the Rocky Mountain Apollo butterfly （Parnassius smintheus Doubleday） are predicted to respond to climate change. Using experimental and observational data collected over the past 15 years, we detail both direct and indirect effects. In addition, we identify limitations in our knowledge restricting the ability to predict how populations will respond to climate change. Some changes, such as warmer winter temperatures, may have beneficial effects; however, most of the effects of climate change will be detrimental. Variability in snow cover during the overwintering period and habitat loss due to forest encroachment have the largest potential negative effects.
