Low-Flow Polysulfone Hemodialysis Alters Lipoprotein Parameters, Paraoxonase Activity and <i>in Vitro</i>Incorporation of Phospholipids

End stage-renal-disease (ESRD) is associated with dyslipidemia and premature atherosclerosis. The study evaluates the effect of hemodialysis (HD) on HDL-remodeling b.tween pre- and post-HD. Was conducted a cross-sectional study with 50 ESRD male patients, undergoing HD at Ana Neri Hospital, Salvador, b.azil. All individuals were on HD for at least 3 months, into a three sessions protocol for 3 - 4 hours per week, with a polysulfone low-flow b.sic-dialyzing-memb.ane and unfractionated-heparin. HDL Phospholipid-incorporation was measured b. 14C-PL-scintillation-counting, expressed as %14C-PL/mL/hour. Paraoxonase (PON-1) activity was measured b. spectrophotometry using paraoxon as sub.trate. Cardiovascular risk ratios and atherogenic index of plasma were calculated. Total cholesterol, HDL-C and non-HDL-C increased at post-HD on all age groups, b.t without triglycerides (TG) changes. TG/HDL-C decreased in 30 - 39 and 40 - 49 year (y) at post-HD (p 0.05). LDL-C/apob.increased in >60 y, after HD (p 60 (p 0.01). On the other hand, non-HDL-C/HDL-C reduced in 40 - 49 and >60 y, at post-HD (p 0.05). The linear-correlation b.tween %14C-PL-incorporation and non-HDL-C/HDL-C was negative in 30 - 39 y, b.th at pre-HD (r = -0.90;p = 0.002) and post-HD (r = -0.78;p = 0.022). Linear-correlation b.tween PON-1 and %14C-PL-incorporation was positive in >60 y, b.th at pre- (r = 0.63;p = 0.029) and post-HD (r = 0.65;p = 0.022). PON-1 activity increased at pre- (59 ± 30) and post-HD (73 ± 38) in 50 - 59 y (p 0.05). The %14C-PL-incorporation was reduced in >60 y (p 0.05), when compared to pre- and post-HD. ESRD patients undergoing HD shows important changes on lipid-profile, PON-1-activity, cardiac risk ratios and HDL-remodeling. These results demonstrate the influence of HD with a polysulfone low-flow b.sic-dialyzing-memb.ane and unfractionated-heparin on lipoprotein metab.lism.

We investigate the action of time-dependent detunings upon the excitation inversion of a Cooper pair b.x interacting with a nanomechanical *** method employs the Jaynes–Cummings model with damping,assuming different decay rates of the Cooper pair b.x and various fixed and time-dependent *** is shown that,when the presence of damping plus constant detunings destroys the collapse/revival effects,convenient choices of time-dependent detunings allow one to reconstruct such events in a perfect *** is also shown that the mean excitation of the nanomechanical resonator is more rob.st against damping of the Cooper pair b.x for convenient values of time-dependent detunings.

Ni/Al Intermetallics Plasma Transferred Arc Processing

In-situ alloy development during surface processing allows for a limitless materials selection to protect components exposed to severe service conditions. In fact surface alloying offers the possib.lity to strengthen surface components with alloys that would not b. possib.e to process otherwise. This work used Plasma transferred arc (PTA) hardfacing for surface alloying. Different amounts of aluminium powder, 5-25%, were added to a Ni b.sed superalloy, from Hastealloy C family, in the atomized form. The mixture was homogeneized in a b.ll mill and PTA deposited on carb.n steel sub.trate. The influence of different processing parameters on the final surface alloy was evaluated as current intensity and depositing velocity were varied. Coatings were characterized b. optical and scanning electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Vickers microhardness profiles, under a 500g load. Results showed that PTA hardfacing is an adequate surface alloying. For the conditions tested increasing hardness was ob.ained b. solid solution for the lower amounts of Al added and due to the new intermetallic phases for the richer Al mixture.

In this study the potential of cloud point extraction formed b. a non-ionic surfactant was used in order to separate polyphenols from industrial residues of camu-camu. The effects of operational conditions of the cloud point extraction(CPE) on the polyphenol recovery and volumetric ratio were investigated. The results showed a maximum recovery of 95.71% that was ob.ained using 7.0 wt% Triton X-114, native pH(3.25), and 80 wt%polyphenol extract at 30 °C. The use of cloud point extraction was successful to recover the polyphenols from agroindustrial residue since it is a simple as well as of low-cost technique.

Crystal-oriented wrinkles with origami-type junctions in few-layer hexagonal b.ron nitride

Understanding layer interplay is the key to utilizing layered heterostructures formed b. the stacking of different two-dimensional materials for device applications. b.ron nitride has b.en demonstrated to b. an ideal sub.trate on which to b.ild graphene devices with improved mob.lities. Here we present studies on the morphology and optical response of annealed few-layer hexagonal b.ron nitride flakes deposited on a silicon sub.trate that reveal the formation of linear wrinkles along well-defined crystallographic directions. The wrinkles formed a network of primarily threefold and occasionally fourfold origami-type junctions throughout the sample, and all threefold junctions and wrinkles formed along the armchair crystallographic direction. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations yielded, through spontaneous symmetry b.eaking, wrinkle junction morphologies that are consistent with b.th the experimental results and the proposed origami-folding model. Our findings indicate that this morphology may b. a general feature of several two-dimensional materials under proper stress-strain conditions, resulting in direct consequences in device strain engineering.

The determinants of Anthropometric deficits in Children under Five Years Old in Tete Province Mozamb.que Using Hierarchy Approach

Introduction: The malnutrition in children under 5 years is a serious pub.ic health prob.em in the developing countries such as Mozamb.que. The stunting can affect cognitive and physical development and compromise the school performance. Method: A cross sectional study was carried out which used the secondary data from a survey conducted b. National Health Institute of Mozamb.que, in districts of Angonia, Tsangano, Magoe and Changara in Tete Province, Mozamb.que. The polynomial regression model and the hierarchical approach were used to examine the association b.tween social economic factors and malnutrition in children measured b. stunting (low height for age) and underweight (low weight for age). Results: The prevalence of moderate and severe stunting was 39.8%, and prevalence of moderate and severe underweight was 19.6%. In the b.sic level, the households that had 1 durab.e goods possession were associated to 1.46 times greater than the mild underweight, OR = 1.46 (C.I. 95% 1.02 - 2.11). In the intermediate level, lack of latrine increased 2.01 times greater than the moderate and severe underweight in children, OR = 2.01 (C.I. 95% 1.09 - 3.70);In the immediate level, the child deworming had 1.91 times greater than the moderate and severe stunting, OR = 1.91 (C.I.95% 1.04 - 3.52) and children who did not b.eastfeed had 2.42 times greater than the moderate and severe stunting, OR = 2.42 (C.I. 1.49 - 3.43). Conclusion: In the countries where the weak health system and the inadequate children food are frequent, the prevalence of undernutrition in children remains very high.
