Patients with nonerosive gastroesophageal reflux disease often have relatively low esophageal acid exposure and respond suboptimally to gastric acid suppressi on. In these patients, other constituents of gastric contents may induce esophag eal *** have demonstrated that gastric contents can cause heartburn when the gastric pH > 4. (Aliment Pharm Ther 14:129-134, 2000). The aim of this stu dy was to determine relative sensitivities to chenodeoxycholic and ursodeoxychol ic acids, and 0.1 N HCl, administered as provocative perfusion tests. Patients w ith functional heartburn and healthy control subjects were evaluated. Patients u nderwent a modified Bernstein acid infusion test and esophageal Barostat balloon distention. Time and volume to pain were recorded. Barostat balloon distention was performed using our standard ***- wise distentions were performed and pain was *** to chenodeox ycholic acid (Cheno) and Ursodeoxycholic acid (Urso) were assessed similarly to the Bernstein test using 2 mM concentrations of each, followed immediately by 5 mM if no pain was reported with 2 mM. Volume of bile acid infusion and length of time until pain was induced were assessed and compared to the same endpoints fo r acid sensitivity. “Total"time and “total" volume to induce pain were calcula ted for Cheno and Urso. Least-squares means were generated and twotailed t-tes ts and regression analyses were performed (Psignificance). Ten functional heartburn patients and six healthy contr ols were evaluated (3M, 13 F; age range, 19 to 56 years). since five of six cont rols had pain with ac- id infusion(hypersensitive), all subjects were analyzed as one group. Only thr ee subjects (all controls) had no pain with infusion of 2 mM Cheno and received the follow-up infusion of 5 mM. MicroRNA-502-3p regulates GABAergic synapse function in hippocampal neurons

A Critical Assessment of Professor Todd Ryan’s, “Philo on the ‘Incomprehensible Nature of the supreme Being’ in Dialogues 2”

I begin my comments by acknowledging that Professor Ryan is correct when he states early in his paper that Philo makes common cause with Demea by arguing that philosophical reflection can yield no knowledge of the nature or essence of the divine being. Ryan asserts that Philo’s defense of this claim, as set out in the third and fourth paragraphs in Part 2, has not received the attention it deserves from commentators. This, according to Ryan, is surprising, since, if Philo is successful here, he will have effectively shut down the project of natural theology, before it can even begin. Ryan goes further, citing my work, scepticism and Belief in Hume’s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1986) to say that Philo’s challenge receives no direct answer from Cleanthes. Instead, Cleanthes proceeds directly to formulate his version of the Argument from Design. Ryan concludes his introductory remarks by asserting that, in these two paragraphs, Philo offers not one, but two, distinct arguments for the conclusion that we can achieve no strictly philosophical knowledge of the nature of God. He then proceeds to flesh out these two arguments, and attempts to show that neither of Philo’s objections is ultimately telling against Cleanthes’ experimental natural theology.

short term temporal variability of selected organophosphate esters among healthy adults living in the National Capital Region of Canada

Organophosphate esters(OPEs)are used primarily as flame-retardants and *** are commonly detected in various environmental matrices,food and drinking water,and their metabolites are frequently found and quantified in *** adverse impacts on human health,including carcinogenicity,neurotoxicity,developmental and reproductive toxicity have been well *** concentration of OPE metabolites can vary in the same individual,depending on the sampling time,thus introducing significant uncertainty in exposure *** current study focusses on the assessment of short term temporal variability in adult men and women residing in Canada's Capital *** OPE metabolites were analyzed in 562 daily urine samples,collected every three days for five weeks from 11 *** extraction procedure was performed on an automated sPE and extracts analyzed using UPLC-Ms/*** spot urine samples as well as first morning void(FMV),the detection frequency was greater than 50%for bis(2-chloroethyl)hydrogen phosphate(BCEP),bis(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate(BCIPP),bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate(BDCIPP),diphenyl phosphate(DPHP)and bis(2,4-ditert-butylphenyl)hydrogen phosphate(B2,4DtBPP).significant difference was observed in males and females for BCEP and ***-class correlation coefficient(ICC)for creatinine corrected data for the spot urine samples ranged from 0.37 to *** reproducibility was observed for creatinine corrected DPHP and BCIPP in both spot urine and FMV *** variation was observed between study participants in the spot urine samples when compared to the FMV ***,when considering diurnal difference there was a considerable inter-day variation in the FMV samples compared to the spot *** strength of the study is that the participants belonged to the same geographical location and working in the same facility,hence spatial variability did not influence the outcome of the results.

Cultural Exclusion and the Transformation of the Cultural Landscape: The Origins of Anti-Chinese Racism in Canada

Anti-Chinese racism in Canada is a social structure of racialized exclusion that over time came to be built into the settler colonialism that continues to shape the *** of European,and especially of British and French origins,have consequently created the cultural landscapes that constitute the country(i.e.,its material constructions and dominant cultural overlays).When read against these landscapes,people of Chinese origins and members of other racialized groups continue to be positioned as aliens who do not belong in the country in way in which people racialized as white are *** on British Columbia(BC),Canada's westernmost province,and the historical activity of people of Chinese origins,this paper traces the history of anti-Chinese racism and its links to Anglo-Canadian settler *** has long been linked to China,and the Chinese entered BC at the same time as Europeans before the country *** this,Chinese people have repeatedly been positioned as threats to Anglo-Canadian dominance,and especially to control over the land and its *** Canadian resistance to racist exclusions,along with that of other groups,has led to the elimination of legislated ***,historic exclusions continue to shape cultural landscapes and popular understandings of who belongs and who does *** these landscapes requires an antiracist project of pursuing common projects that cross over racialized differences to remake the territory in ways that affirm the presence of all the peoples of Canada.
