Multivariate Statistical Analysis of Large Datasets: Single Particle Electron Microscopy

Biology is a challenging and complicated mess. Understanding this challenging complexity is the realm of the biological sciences: Trying to make sense of the massive, messy data in terms of discovering patterns and revealing its underlying general rules. Among the most powerful mathematical tools for organizing and helping to structure complex, heterogeneous and noisy data are the tools provided by multivariate statistical analysis (Msa) approaches. These eigenvector/eigenvalue data-compression approaches were first introduced to electron microscopy (EM) in 1980 to help sort out different views of macromolecules in a micrograph. After 35 years of continuous use and developments, new Msa applications are still being proposed regularly. The speed of computing has increased dramatically in the decades since their first use in electron microscopy. However, we have also seen a possibly even more rapid increase in the size and complexity of the EM data sets to be studied. Msa computations had thus become a very serious bottleneck limiting its general use. The parallelization of our programs—speeding up the process by orders of magnitude—has opened whole new avenues of research. The speed of the automatic classification in the compressed eigenvector space had also become a bottleneck which needed to be removed. In this paper we explain the basic principles of multivariate statistical eigenvector-eigenvalue data compression;we provide practical tips and application examples for those working in structural biology, and we provide the more experienced researcher in this and other fields with the formulas associated with these powerful Msa approaches.

Environmental Data Observation System—Solam for Analysis and Interpretation of Soil Moisture variation and Precipitation Indexes

The monitoring of urban slopes employing in-situ equipment seeks to avoid the loss of human lives midst emergency events like landslides. Cemaden (Brazilian National Centre for Monitoring and Early Warnings of Natural Disasters) has a pilot network of soil moisture and rain gauge stations located in urban slopes to understand, prevent, and mitigate landslides. Due to the large volume of data produced by this system there was a need for tools for data retrieval and visualization. This paper describes the Solam (Environmental Data Observation System) software which generates automated graphs that enable researchers to analyze and comprise data from soil moisture sensors and rain gauge stations. Those results allow to research moisture variations in six different sensor levels (from 0.5 m to 3 m deep) and precipitation indexes (hourly and accumulated rainfall) for the established period. This analysis will provide information to set critical environmental thresholds on base recorded landslides.

Ammonium Ion Adsorption and Settleability Improvement Achieved in a Synthetic Zeolite-Amended Activated Sludge

Municipal wastewater treatment plants typically exhibit two classic problems: high ammonium concentration in water after conventional biological treatment and,in some cases,poor activated sludge sediment *** solutions to these problems were investigated by adding a synthetic zeolite obtained from coal fly ash to different steps of activated sludge *** experimental results for ammonium removal fit well with the theoretical adsorption isotherms of the Freundlich model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 13.72 mg·g *** of this kind of zeolite to improve activated sludge sediment ability is studied for the first time in this *** is found that the addition of the zeolite(1 g·L 1) to an activated sludge with settling problems significantly enhances its sediment ability and compact *** is confirmed by the sludge volume index(SvI),which was reduced from 163 ml·g 1to 70 ml·g 1,the v60value,which was reduced from 894 ml·L 1to 427 ml·L 1,and the zeta potential(ζ),which was reduced from 19.81 mv to 14.29 *** results indicate that the addition of this synthetic zeolite to activated sludge,as an additional waste management practice,has a positive impact on both ammonium removal and sludge settleability.

In vitro Evaluation with 5SBF of Alloy ASTM F75 Thermally Treated with Wollastonite

samples of a cobalt-based alloy that underwent a surface treatment were evaluated. The samples, which were obtained by casting alloy ASTM F 75, were ground and polished on one side until a mirror finish was obtained. The samples were encapsulated in wollastonite （W） using uniaxial pressure, treated at 1 220 ~C for 1 h and subsequently tempered in water. The characterisation of the sample indicated that part of the ceramic encapsulating material was mechanically incorporated on the metallic surface by growth of the oxide layer of the alloy. After thermal treatment, a series of specimens were submerged in a solution with 5-fold simulated body fluid （5SBF） for 3, 5 and 21 days. Characterisation by scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, energy dispersive spectroscopy （EDS） and X-ray diffraction （XRD） indicated nucleation and growth of a homogenous layer of apatite, beginning on the third day when the sample was submerged.

Are eavesdroppers multimodal？ Sensory exploitation of floral signals by a non-native cockroach Blatta orientalis

The study of multi-modal communication has only recently been extended to innate and learned interactions between flowers and their animal visitors, and usually only to pollinators. Here we studied the relevance of floral scent and visual display of a night blooming, putatively hawkmoth-pollinated plantOenothera acaulis(Onagraceae) in the attraction of non-native cockroachesBlatta orientalis(Blattodea: Blattidae), which function as facultative floral larcenists in coastal habitats of central Chile. We experimentally decoupled visual (corolla) and olfactory (fragrance) stimuli by presenting paper corollas and green mesh bags, with or without a freshly-picked natural flower inside. We then contrasted the behavioral responses of roaches in these treatments with those to the natural combination of traits in actual flowers and their respective control treatments, measuring the roaches’ frequency of first visits, mean and total residence time spent in each treatment. The roaches primarily used olfactory cues when approachingO. acaulisflowers at two biologically relevant spatial scales. In addition, the presence of conspecific roaches had a strong influence on recruitment to the experimental arena, increasing the statistical differences among treatments. Our results suggest a primacy of floral fragrance over visual stimuli in the foraging responses ofB. orientalis. Olfactory cues were necessary and sufficient to attract the roaches, and the visual cues presented in our manipulations only marginally increased their attraction within a 20 cm diameter of the stimulus. The full spectrum of floral visitation behavior was not elicited by the artificial flowers, suggesting the need for additional tactile or contact chemosensory stimuli not provided by paper. Although the nitrogenous scent compounds that we found inO. acaulisflowers are almost exclusively found in hawkmoth-pollinated flowers, the attractiveness of these compounds to a non-native, facultative flower-visiting insect

The fruits and vegetables sector in Ecuador despite its gradual growth in local and international markets has captured the interest of state institutions and academic centers who have focused their studies on agronomic aspects of non-traditional products without considering socioeconomic, productive and performance problems;such is the case of goldenberry value chain. To this extent, the aim of this article was to present an analysis of goldenberry value chain in Ecuador through the identification of stages, agents, flows and activities (primary and support) from the socioeconomic and productive point of view for which a systematic methodology was used involving aspects of the agroeconomic process. As a result, it was determined that goldenberry value chain in the production and postproduction stages requires the diversification of marketing channels, the implementation of refrigerated storage modules located in the supply centers, the strengthening of associative and/or cooperative structures;and the productive planning programs to provide a potential competitive advantage.

Neutron star cooling and GW170817 constraint within quark-meson coupling models

In the present work, we used five different versions of the quark-meson coupling(QMC) model to compute astrophysical quantities related to the GW170817 event and the neutron star cooling process. Two of the models are based on the original bag potential structure and three versions consider a harmonic oscillator potential to confine quarks. The bag-like models also incorporate the pasta phase used to describe the inner crust of neutron stars. With a simple method studied in the present work, we show that the pasta phase does not play a significant role. Moreover, the QMC model that satisfies the GW170817 constraints with the lowest slope of the symmetry energy exhibits a cooling profile compatible with observational data.

Our aim was to conduct a narrative review about physical exercise and Corona virus Disease 2019(COvID-19).A literature search was completed crossing the keywords“COvID-19”and“physical exercise”,for a narrative re-view,and physical activity(PA),physical exercise,physical training,sport,physical fitness,for a systematic re-view;search strategy(Randomized Controlled Trial,in the last 1 year,English).The first search date was closed on 04/26/2020 and 06/26/*** strategy was chosen to assess the dynamics of scientific information production for the *** two months,an increase of 76%,from 12(19.4%)to 50(80.64%)COvID-19 articles(n=62,100%)was *** main types of articles published were editorial articles(16.13%,n=10 of 62 articles)and commentary(9.68%,n=6 of 62 articles).The most frequent country of origin of the scientific production was the United States(12.90%,n=8 of 62 articles),the United Kingdom(12.90%,n=8 of 62 arti-cles),and Brazil(11.29%,n=7 of 62 articles).However,in 2020,there were only 2 relevant randomized controlled trials on the COvID-19 topic in the context of physical *** information production shows the concern of the PA science community to bring a solution to the increase in physical inactivity generated by the COvID-19 *** findings show the dynamics of scientific production on the COvID-19,in a situation so unique such as a pandemic,denotes that the practice of PA is essential to improve and/or maintain physical and mental health.

Comparison of six human anti-transglutaminase ELIsa-tests in the diagnosis of celiac disease in the saharawi population

AIM: Celiac disease (CD) is an enteropathic disorder very prevalent in Seharawi people. Our aim was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of six human tissue transglutaminase (tTG) based ELIsa tests in saharawi CD ***: Fifty-two CD patients and 23 controls were selected from the saharawi refugee camps in Tinduf. CD patients were divided into two groups according to their anti-endomysium (EmA) status: 41 EmA positive and 11 EmA negative. Sera from patients and controls were tested for human tTG using six commercial ELIsa kits. We used receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves and areas under the curve to compare the diagnostic accuracies of the six ***: In general, there are differences in the sensitivity and specificity of the human tTG ELIsa assays used. Diagnostic accuracy of tests was significantly improved by adjusting the cut-off thresholds according to ROC plot analysis; the correction of the cut-off with the employment of the ROC curve analysis modifies the decision limit in more than 50% in five of the six kits ***: Some of the human tTG ELIsas used in this study have a diagnostic accuracy similar to EmA determination for diagnosis of CD in saharawi people. However, it is necessary to select the assay with a higher sensitivity and specificity, and recalculate the cut-off threshold using samples from the referral population.
