Palliative long-term abdominal drains vs large volume paracenteses for the management of refractory ascites in end-stage liver disease

Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Effects of Capybara Oil on Cardiac Remodeling of C57bl/6 Mice

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of morbidity and mortality in the world, and obesity and the metabolic syndrome are risk factors for its development. One of the therapies to reduce cardiovascular risk is the use of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In Brazil, a source of such acid is the oil extracted from the fat of the capybara. The objective of this work is to study the effects of the capybara oil on lipid and glucose metabolism, as well as its effects on the adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling. We assessed the effects of capybara oil treatment on body mass, lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, systolic blood pressure, adipose tissue and cardiac remodeling, and performed an ultrastructural evaluation of the myocardium in C57Bl/6 mice treated with high-fat diet. Treatment with capybara oil reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, systolic blood pressure, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, and adipocyte diameter. In addition, cardiac remodeling was attenuated, preserving cardiomyocytes, increasing vascularization, reducing cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and the extracellular matrix, and preserving the morphological integrity of mitochondria. Capybara oil has several beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and metabolic system, and further studies are needed to better understand its role in the prevention or treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

Energy-band engineering by 2D MXene doping for high-performance homojunction transistors and logic circuits

The homojunction based on Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3) and indium oxide as the channel layer is real-ized in high-performance metal oxide thin film transistors(TFTs).Doping of MXene into In_(2)O_(3) results in n-type semiconductor behavior,realizing tunable work function of In_(2)O_(3) from 5.11 to 4.79 ev as MXene content increases from 0 to 2 wt.%.MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3)-based homojunction TFT presents optimal per-formance with electron mobilities of greater than 27.10 cm^(2)/(v s)at 240°C,far exceeding the maximum mobility of 3.91 cm^(2)/(v s)for single-layer In_(2)O_(3)*** improved performance originates from boosting of a two-dimensional electron gas(2DEG)formed at carefully engineered In_(2)O_(3)/MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3)ox-ide homojunction ***,the transformation in conduction mechanism leads to better stability of MXene-doped In_(2)O_(3) homojunction devices compared to undoped bilayer In_(2)O_(3).Low-frequency noise further illustrates that doping MXene into In_(2)O_(3) helps to reduce the device trap density,demonstrating excellent electrical performance.A resistor-loaded unipolar inverter based on In_(2)O_(3)/0.5%MXene-In_(2)O_(3)TFT has demonstrated full swing characteristics and a high gain of *** effective doping of MXene into constructed homojunction TFTs not only contributes to improved stability,but also provides an ef-fective strategy for designing novel homojunction TFTs for low-cost oxide-based electronics.

Quantum effects on dislocation motion from ring-polymer molecular dynamics

Quantum motion of atoms known as zero-point vibration was recently proposed to explain a long-standing discrepancy between theoretically computed and experimentally measured low-temperature plastic strength of iron and possibly other metals with high atomic *** finding challenges the traditional notion that quantum motion of atoms is relatively unimportant in solids comprised of heavy *** we report quantum dynamic simulations of quantum effects on dislocation motion within the exact formalism of Ring-Polymer Molecular Dynamics(RPMD).To extend the reach of quantum atomistic simulations to length and time scales relevant for extended defects in materials,we implemented RPMD in the open-source code LAMMPS thus making the RPMD method widely available to the *** use our RPMD/LAMMPS approach for direct calculations of dislocation mobility and its effects on the yield strength ofα-*** simulation results establish that quantum effects are noticeable at temperatures below 50 K but account for only a modest(≈13% at T=0 K)overall reduction in the Peierls barrier,at variance with the factor of two reduction predicted earlier based on the more approximate framework of harmonic transition state *** results confirm that zero-point vibrations provide ample additional agitation for atomic motion that increases with decreasing temperature,however its enhancing effect on dislocation mobility is largely offset by an increase in the effective atom size,an effect known as quantum dispersion that has not been accounted for in the previous calculations.

Feasibility of the 2-point method to determine the load-velocity relationship variables during the countermovement jump exercise

Purpose:This study aimed to examine the reliability and validity of load-velocity(L-v)relationship variables obtained through the 2-point method using different load combinations and velocity ***:Twenty men performed 2 identical sessions consisting of 2 countermovement jumps against 4 external loads(20 kg,40 kg,60 kg,and80 kg)and a heavy squat against a load linked to a mean velocity(Mv)of 0.55 m/s(load_(0.55)).The L-v relationship variables(load-axis intercept(L_(0)),velocity-axis intercept(v_(0)),and area under the L-v relationship line(A_(line)))were obtained using 3 velocity variables(Mv,mean propulsive velocity(MPv),and peak velocity)by the multiple-point method including(20-40-60-80-load_(0.55))and excluding(20-40-60-80)the heavy squat,as well as from their respective 2-point methods(20-load_(0.55)and 20-80).Results:The L-v relationship variables were obtained with an acceptable reliability(coefncient of variation(Cv)≤7.30%;intra-class correlation coefficient>0.63).The reliability of L_(0)and v_(0)was comparable for both methods(Cv_(ratio)(calculated as higher value/lower value):1.11-1.12),but the multiple-point method provided Al_(ine)with a greater reliability(Cv_(ratio)=1.26).The use of a heavy squat provided the L-v relationship variables with a comparable or higher reliability than the use of a heavy countermovement jump load(Cv_(ratio):1.06-1.19).The peak velocity provided the load-velocity relationship variables with the greatest reliability(Cv_(ratio):1.15-1.86)followed by the Mv(Cv_(ratio):1.07-1.18),and finally the *** 2-point methods only revealed an acceptable validity for the Mv and MPv(effect size≤0.19;Pearson s product-moment correlation coefficient≥0.96;Lin's concordance correlation coefficient≥0.94).Conclusion:The 2-point method obtained from a heavy squat load and Mv or MPv is a quick,safe,and reliable procedure to evaluate the lower-body maximal neuromuscular capacities through the L-v relationship.

Pyrolytic synthesis of graphene-encapsulated zero-valent iron nanoparticles supported on biochar for heavy metal removal

Biochar(BC)-supported graphene-encapsulated zero-valent iron nanoparticle composites(BC-G@Fe0)are promising engineering nanocomposites that can be used to scavenge heavy metal from ***,the produc-tion of BC-G@Fe0 through carbothermal reduction using biomass as a carbon source remains challenging because of biomass pyrolysis ***,we examined two carbothermal reduction routes for preparing BC-G@Fe0 using bamboo as the carbon *** first route impregnated Fe ions(Fe^(2+)/^(3+))into unpyrolyzed bamboo parti-cles initially,followed by carbonization at 600-1000℃.This process produced BC-G@Fe0 dominated by iron carbide(Fe_(3)C),which led to low heavy metal removal efficiency(i.e.,Cu^(2+)capacity ofvalent iron nanoparticles,which resulted in high heavy metal removal capacities(i.e.,0.30,1.58,and 1.91 mmol g^(−1)for Pb^(2+),Cu^(2+),and Ag+,respectively).The effects of car-bonization temperature(600-1000℃),iron source(i.e.,iron nitrates,iron sulfate,ferrous chloride,and ferric chloride),and iron loading(5-40%)on the morphology,structure,and heavy metal ion aqueous uptake performance of BC-G@Fe0 were also *** study revealed the formation mechanisms of BC-G@Fe0 through biomass carbother-mal reduction,which could guide the application-oriented design of multifunctional iron-BC composites for water remediation.
