Nexus security： governance, innovation and the resilient city

Nexus security is a compound mix of ideas： reconciling human needs and wants with access to multiple resources; diversity of access to those resources and services; resilience in the face of weather- and climate- related variability; resilience likewise in the face of infrastructure failure; and the personal, individual sense of belonging. At the level of Systems Thinking there is a very close relationship between resilience in the behavior of natural （ecological） systems and resilience in the social dynamics of governance within communities, where such resilience establishes the viability of these communities over centuries, which in turn entails successful stewardship of the man-environment relationship. We use insights from this cross-system mapping -- across natural, built, and human systems -- to assess, first, the role of city governance in achieving nexus security （or not） and, second, the role of technological innovations in serving the same purpose. More specifically, eight principles, covering resilience and diversity of access to resources and services, are used to gauge security-enhancing features of city buildings and infrastructure. Case studies include new designs of resilient office blocks, nutrient （nitrogen and phosphorus） recovery systems for sanitation and waste- water treatment, and the reconstruction of urban parks for the provision of ecosystem services. Throughout the paper, matters of risk in the face of meteorological variability are prominent. We do not conclude, however, that the presence of risk implies nexus insecurity.

The role of water security in sustainable development and in the nexus of water, food, energy and climate interactions is examined from the starting point of the definition of water security offered by Grey and Sadoff. Much about the notion of security has to do with the presumption of scarcity in the resources required to meet human needs. The treatment of scarcity in mainstream economics is in turn examined, therefore, in relation to how each of us as individuals reconciles means with ends, a procedure at the core of the idea of sustainable development. According to the Grey-Sadoff definition, attaining water security amounts to achieving basic, single- sector water development as a precursor of more general, self-sustaining, multi-sectoral development. This is con- sistent with the way in which water is treated as ＂first among equals＂, i.e. privileged, in thinking about what is key in achieving security around the nexus of water, food, energy and climate. Cities, of course, are locations where demands for these multiple resource-energy flows are increasingly being generated. The paper discusses two important facets of security, i.e., diversity of access to resources and services （such as sanitation） and resilience in the behavior of coupled human-built-natural systems. Eight quasi-operational principles, by which to gauge nexus security with respect to city buildings and infrastructure, are developed.

BACKGROUND Acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) is a complication of ulcerative colitisassociated with high levels of circulating tumor necrosis factor alpha, due to theintense inflammation and faster stool clearance of anti-tumor necrosis factordrugs. Dose-intensified infliximab treatment can be beneficial and is associatedwith lower rates of colectomy. The aim of the study was to present a case of apatient with ASUC and megacolon, treated with hydrocortisone and acceleratedscheme of infliximab that was monitored by drug trough *** SUMMARYA 22-year-old female patient diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, presented withdiarrhea, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, vomiting, and distended *** investigation, a positive toxin for Clostridium difficile and colonic dilatationof 7 cm consistent with megacolon were observed. She was treated with oralvancomycin for pseudomembranous colitis and intravenous hydrocortisone forsevere colitis, which led to the resolution of megacolon. Due to the persistentsevere colitis symptoms, infliximab 5 mg/kg was prescribed, monitored by drugtrough level (8.8 μg/mL) and fecal calprotectin of 921 μg/g (patient received a second infusion at week 1, consistent with the acceleratedregimen (infusions at weeks 0, 1, 2 and 6). We achieved a positive clinical andendoscopic response after 6 mo of therapy, without the need for a *** accelerated infusions can be beneficial in ASUC unresponsive to thetreatment with intravenous corticosteroids. Longitudinal studies are necessary todefine the best therapeutic drug monitoring and treatment regimen for thesepatients.

In the present work,we used five different versions of the quark-meson coupling(QMC)model to compute astrophysical quantities related to the GW170817 event and the neutron star cooling *** of the models are based on the original bag potential structure and three versions consider a harmonic oscillator potential to confine *** bag-like models also incorporate the pasta phase used to describe the inner crust of neutron *** a simple method studied in the present work,we show that the pasta phase does not play a significant ***,the QMC model that satisfies the GW170817 constraints with the lowest slope of the symmetry energy exhibits a cooling profile compatible with observational data.

The honesty of structural-based ornaments is controversial. Sexual selection theory predicts that the honesty of a sexual signal relies on its cost of production or maintenance. Therefore, environmental factors with negative impact on individuals could generate high costs and affect the expres- sion of these sexual signals. In this sense, parasites are a main cost for their hosts. To probe the effect of parasites on the structural-based coloration of a lacertid species Lacerta schreiberi, we have experimentally removed ticks from a group of male Iberian green lizards using an acaricide treatment （i.e., the broad-use insecticide fipronil）. All individuals were radio-tracked and recaptured after 15 days to study changes in coloration in both the ultraviolet （UV）-blue （structural-based） and UV-yellow （structural and pigment-based） ornamentations after manipulation, as well as changes in endoand ectoparasitic load and body condition. Additionally, after the experiment, we measured the skin inflammatory response to a mitogen. The fipronil treatment was effective in reducing ticks and it was associated with a significant reduction of hemoparasite load. Throughout the season, individuals treated with fipronil tended to maintain the brightness of the UV-blue throat coloration while control lizards tended to increase it. However, individuals treated with fipronil that were not infected with hemoparasites significantly reduced the brightness of the UV-blue throat color ation. Individuals with a higher initial tick load exhibited a lower UV saturation increment （UV-blue） and a higher brightness increment （UV-yellow） during the experiment. Overall these results experimentally support the idea that parasites adversely influence the expression of the structural-based coloration of male Iberian green lizards. This adds evidence to the hypothesis that sexual ornaments in lizards function as honest signals.

Oligo-carrageenans （OCs） obtained from pure carrageenans extracted from marine red algae stimulate growth by enhancing photosynthesis and basal metabolism in tobacco plants and Eucalyptus trees. In addition, OCs stimulate secondary metabolism, increasing the level of metabolites involved in defense against pathogens. In this work, we analyzed the effect of OC kappa on the increase in height, in activities of basal metabolism enzymes in- volved in carbon, nitrogen and sulphur assimilation, ribu- lose 1,5 biphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase （rubisco）, glutamate dehydrogenase （GDH） and O-acetylserine thiol- lyase （OASTL）, and in the level of growth-promoting hormones, the auxin indole acetic acid （IAA） and the gibberellin GA3, in pine （pinus radiata） trees treated with OC kappa at concentrations of 1 and 5 mg mL-1 and cultivated for 9 months without additional treatment. pines treated with OC kappa at 1 mg mL-1 showed a similar increase in height but displayed a higher increased in total chlorophyll, activities of rubisco, GDH and OASTL and level of IAA and GA3 than those treated with OC kappa at 5 mg mL-1. Thus, OC kappa stimulates growth and basal metabolism and increases the level of growth-promoting hormones in pine trees, mainly at 1 mg mL-1.
