Prognostic angiogenic markers(endoglin, VEGF, CD31) and tumor cell proliferation(Ki67) for gastrointestinal stromal tumors

AIM: To evaluate the correlation between the immunoexpression of angiogenic markers [CD31, CD105 and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)], proliferative index(Ki67), and prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GIST).METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 54 GIST cases. Medical records were searched to obtain the GIST patients' demographic and clinical data, and paraffin-embedded blocks of tumor samples were retrieved from the hospital archives to conduct a new immunohistochemical evaluation. The tumor samples of GIST patients were subject to immunohistochemical evaluation for endoglin(CD105), CD31, VEGF, and Ki67 expression. The CD105 and CD31 intratumoral microvascular density(IMVD) was measured using automated analysis. We determined the correlation between the immunoexpression of CD105, CD31, VEGF,Ki67 and prognosis. In addition, we conducted a cutoff analysis using the receiver-operating characteristic curve. VEGF positivity was classified as either null/weak or strong. Ki67 was evaluated using a cutoff of 5%positive cells. The prognosis was classified as good(patient alive without recurrence) or poor(patient with recurrence/death).RESULTS: The distribution of tumor sites among the54 analyzed samples was as follows: 27(50%) in the stomach, 20(37.1%) in the small intestine, 6(11.1%)in the colon, and 1(1.8%) in the esophagus. The size of the tumors ranged from 2 to 33 cm(median: 8cm); in 12 cases(22.2%), the tumor was below 5 cm at the largest diameter, but in 42 cases(77.7%), the tumor was larger than 5 cm. The means of CD105 and CD31 were significantly higher in the group with poor prognosis(P 1.2%) and CD31(> 2.5%) in the receiver-operating characteristic curve were related to a poorer *** with a better prognosis showed significantly null/weak staining for VEGF(P < 0.001). Spatiotemporal Variability of Methane over the Amazon from Satellite Observations

The spatiotemporal variability of the greenhouse gas methane （CH4） in the atmosphere over the Amazon is studied using data from the space-borne measurements of the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder on board NASA＇s AQUA satellite for the period 2003-12. The results show a pronounced variability of this gas over the Amazon Basin lowlands region, where wetland areas occur. CH4 has a well-defined seasonal behavior, with a progressive increase of its concentration during the dry season, followed by a decrease during the wet season. Concerning this variability, the present study indicates the important role of ENSO in modulating the variability of CH4 emissions over the northern Amazon, where this association seems to be mostly linked to changes in flooded areas in response to ENSO-related precipitation changes. In this region, a CH4 decrease （increase） is due to the E1 Nifio-related （La Nifia-related） dryness （wetness）. On the other hand, an increase （decrease） in the biomass burning over the southeastern Amazon during very dry （wet） years explains the increase （decrease） in CH4 emissions in this region. The present analysis identifies the two main areas of the Amazon, its northern and southeastern sectors, with remarkable interannual variations of CH4. This result might be useful for future monitoring of the variations in the concentration of CH4, the second-most important greenhouse gas, in this area.

Eucalyptus adult material requires more successive subcultures in the in vitro multiplication phase for increased vigor and cellular activity. This study evaluated the endophytic manifestation and shoot multiplication of one 13-year-old Eucalyptus benthamii clone under different culture conditions and used canopy branches(CB) and trunk base material as explant sources. The culture media were wood plant medium(WPM), Murashige and Skoog medium(MS) and JADS(Correia and co-authors medium).Based on the results of the initial multiplication experiment, further tests examined sucrose concentrations and p H. Morphophysiology, dry mass production, endophyticmanifestation and histochemical were determined. Explant sources responded differently to MS and JADS media, but the WPM medium promoted homogeneous *** responses were similar for both explant sources when sucrose concentrations varied. Shoots died in the absence of sucrose, showed high oxidation at 60 g L-1 and optimal development at 30 g L-1. Endophytes were more evident for shoots from the CB origin. Explant sources responded distinctively to treatment due to physiological and intrinsic genetic factors. Therefore, explant sources, different culture media, sucrose concentration and p H may determine micropropagation success and influence the presence and/or intensity of endophytic manifestation.

Reconfigurable MIMO-based self-powered battery-less light communication system

Simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT), co-existing with optical wireless communication,holds an enormous potential to provide continuous charging to remote Internet of Things (IoT) devices while ensuringconnectivity. Combining SLIPT with an omnidirectional receiver, we can leverage a higher power budget whilemaintaining a stable connection, a major challenge for optical wireless communication systems. Here, we design amultiplexed SLIPT-based system comprising an array of photodetectors (PDs) arranged in a 3 × 3 configuration. Thesystem enables decoding information from multiple light beams while simultaneously harvesting energy. The PDs canswiftly switch between photoconductive and photovoltaic modes to maximize information transfer rates and provideon-demand energy harvesting. Additionally, we investigated the ability to decode information and harvest energywith a particular quadrant set of PDs from the array, allowing beam tracking and spatial diversity. The design wasexplored in a smaller version for higher data rates and a bigger one for higher power harvesting. We report a selfpoweringdevice that can achieve a gross data rate of 25.7 Mbps from a single-input single-output (SISO) and an 85.2Mbps net data rate in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration. Under a standard AMT1.5 illumination,the device can harvest up to 87.33 mW, around twice the power needed to maintain the entire system. Our workpaves the way for deploying autonomous IoT devices in harsh environments and their potential use in spaceapplications.

Autoregressive spatial analysis and individual tree modeling as strategies for the management of Eremanthus erythropappus

The objectives of this study were to apply statistical techniques to discriminate fertilization treatments of Eremanthus erythropappus（DC.） Mac *** autoregressive modeling, and to develop individual tree models for diameter and crown area（CA） projection to define management strategies for candeia plantations subjected to different fertilization treatments. This is an important tree species originating from the Brazilian Atlantic Rain forest and Savannah biomes, intensively used in the cosmetic industry. Nonetheless, to date, research has not addressed the management of natural stands or plantations of the species. Our experiment was located in Baependi, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and comprised of four randomized blocks and 13 treatments. The treatments consisted of 12 different regimes of fertilization plus a control. Each sample plot was composed of 50 plants plus two border plants in a planting spacing of 2.5 9 2.0 m and undergoing pruning at 5 and 6 years of age. Starting in the second year, total tree height（H） and circumference（at 1.30 m from the ground or breast height, CBH） were measured every 6 months. Starting in the fifth year CA was measured. Tree growth varied by fertilization *** were detected by using an autoregressive approach, considering that standard statistical methods were not powerful enough to detect significant *** growth groups were formed, and maximum growth was obtained for treatment 10（NPK, 8-28-16）. Management guidelines are provided based on individual tree models for different fertilization levels.
