Pancreatic cystic lesions(PCLs)are becoming more prevalent due to more frequent abdominal imaging and the increasing age of the general *** has become crucial to identify these PCLs and subsequently risk stratify them to guide *** the high morbidity associated with pancreatic surgery,only those PCLs at high risk for malignancy should undergo such ***,current diagnostic testing is suboptimal at accurately diagnosing and risk stratifying ***,research has focused on developing new techniques for differentiating mucinous from non-mucinous PCLs and identifying high risk lesions for *** sectional imaging radiomics can potentially improve the predictive accuracy of primary risk stratification of PCLs at the time of detection to guide invasive *** cyst fluid glucose has reemerged as a potential biomarker,cyst fluid molecular markers have improved accuracy for identifying specific types of *** ultrasound guided approaches such as confocal laser endomicroscopy and through the needle microforceps biopsy have shown a good correlation with histopathological findings and are evolving techniques for identifying and risk stratifying *** most of these recent diagnostics are only practiced at selective tertiary care centers,they hold a promise that management of PCLs will only get better in the future.

AIM:To establish the hospitalized prevalence of severe Crohn's disease(CD) and ulcerative colitis(UC) in wales from 1999 to 2007;and to investigate long-term mortality after hospitalization and associations with social deprivation and other socio-demographic ***:Record linkage of administrative inpatient and mortality data for 1467 and 1482 people hospitalised as emergencies for ≥ 3d for CD and UC,*** main outcome measures were hospitalized prevalence,mortality rates and standardized mortality ratios for up to 5 years follow-up after ***:Hospitalized prevalence was 50.1 per 100 000 population for CD and 50.6 for *** hospitalized prevalence of CD was significantly higher(P was highest in people aged 16-29 years,but the prevalence of UC was similar in males(51.0) and females(50.1),and increased continuously with *** hospital-ized prevalence of CD was slightly higher in the most deprived areas,but there was no association between social deprivation and hospitalized prevalence of *** was 6.8% and 14.6% after 1 and 5 years follow-up for CD,and 9.2% and 20.8% after 1 and 5 years for *** both CD and UC,there was little discernible association between mortality and social deprivation,distance from hospital,urban/rural residence and ***:CD and UC have distinct demographic *** higher prevalence of hospitalized CD in more deprived areas may reflect higher prevalence and higher hospital dependency.

we utilized a unique culture system to analyze the expression patterns of gene,protein,and cell surface antigen,and the biological process of the related genes in erythroid and myeloid differentiation and switching of hematopoieticstem cells(HSCs)in response to cytokine ***-specific fragments(266)identified from five populationsof cytokine-stimulated HSCs were categorized into three groups:(1)expressed specifically in a single cell population;(2)expressed in two cell populations,and(3)expressed in three or more populations. Of 145 defined cDNAs,three(2%)were novel *** two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry analyses showed overlappedand distinguished protein expression profiles in the cell populations *** process mapping of mRNAsexpressed in erythroid and myeloid lineages indicated that mRNAs shared by both lineages attended 'core processes,'whereas genes specifically expressed in either lineage alone were related to specific processes or cellular *** this study support the hypothesis that committed HSCs(E14 or g14)cells can still be redirected to develop intomyeloid or erythroid cells when erythropoietin(EPO)is replaced with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor(g-CSF)under erythroid-cultured condition or g-CSF with EPO in myeloid-cultured environment,*** results sug-gest that genes or proteins co-expressed in erythroid and myeloid lineages may be essential for the lineage maintenanceand switching in hematopoiesis.

为研究装配式自复位剪力墙结构在地震作用下的低损伤特性以及新型节点连接形式的有效性,同济大学ILEE联合实验室与新西兰QuakeCoRE研究中心联合开展了大型装配式自复位剪力墙结构振动台试验研究。试验对象为二层足尺装配式结构,结构体系主要由承受重力荷载的外围框架和承担水平荷载的自复位剪力墙构成。框架柱为重力柱,梁柱节点为开槽梁节点,可减少梁伸长效应带来的楼板损伤;自复位剪力墙与楼板的连接,长边方向为柔性连接、短边方向为隔离式连接;一层楼板采用双T板,二层楼板采用压型钢板组合楼板;节点连接处设有钢、铅、黏滞等三类阻尼器。在振动台试验中考虑了不同地震水准、地震动输入、结构设计等对结构动力响应的影响。试验结果表明,该结构在1g地震动输入下仍具有低损伤、自复位特性,试验间多次更换阻尼器,成功实现了关键部件的可更换性。

A newly developed method of RT-PCR/competitive PCR for measuring the relative and ab-solute content of globin mRNAs as well as micro-globin chain biosynthetic assay have been used to study thealterations of globin gene expressions in the patients with β-thalassemia pre-and post-hydroxyurea(HU)*** was found for the first time that HU had the effect of enhancing β-globin gene expression insome *** cases with β-thalassemia who were subjected to HU treatment for over two years showeda marked increase in β-globin mRNA level and β-globin chain synthesis,resulting in more effective erythro-poiesis and the alleviation of clinical symptoms.

Toxicity and Antiviral Activities of Some Medicinal Plants Used by Traditional Medical Practitioners in Zimbabwe

genital herpes, usually caused by Herpes Simplex Virus type-2 (HSV-2), is the commonest sexually transmitted disease especially amongst rural women in Southern Africa including Zimbabwe. This predisposes them to HIV/AIDS infection, cancer and opportunistic infections (OIs). Current antiviral treatments are often cytotoxic and/or ineffective. This motivates active research to find alternative safer drugs or lead drugs from traditional medicinal sources. Twenty six (26) methanol extracts from commonly used and often endangered plant species (14) used by communities and traditional medical practitioners for treating illnesses and sexually transmitted diseases from 5-selected districts of Zimbabwe were investigated for toxicity by Brine shrimp lethality test (BSLT) and by 50% Cytopathic effect on VERO cultured cells. The extracts were also tested for antiviral activity against Herpes Simplex Virus-2 (HSV-2) by the End Point Titration Technique (EPTT) and Neutralisation Test (NT) on VERO cells. Results from the BSLTs ranged 66.66 - 4304 μg/ml;50% Cytopathic effect from 19.53 - 312 μg/ml whilst the NT ID50 values ranged from 10.41 - 125 μg/ml. The antiviral EPTT reduction factor (RF) was 1 - 104 with 13 extracts showing RF ≥ 103. All the plant extracts had moderate to high toxicity (LC50, 789 - 66 μg/ml) in the BSLT. Six extracts had LC50 values greater than 1000 μg/ml. All 26 extracts were cytotoxic with CC50 values g/ml of which 19 were more toxic CC50 in vitro therapeutic indexes ≥ 3.7. Cassia abbreviata, Dichrostachys cinerea and Hypoxis hemerocallidea had therapeutic indexes (TI) 7.5 - 15.0. The more active plant extracts were from roots and root tubers. The results confirm the rationale for the use of traditional medicinal plants by traditional medical practitioners for treating various diseases and could bring awareness for their better use and improve conservation.
