Calibration of a hysteretic m.del for glass fiber reinforced gypsum.wall panels

Glass fi ber reinforced gypsum.GFRG) wall panels are prefabricated panels with hollow cores, originally developed in Australia and subsequently adopted by India and China for use in buildings. This paper discusses identifi cation and calibration of a suitable hysteretic m.del for GFRG wall panels fi lled with reinforced concrete. As considerable pinching was observed in the experim.ntal results, a suitable hysteretic m.del with pinched hysteretic rule is used to conduct a series of quasi-static as inelastic hysteretic response analyses of GFRG panels with two different widths. The calibration of the pinching m.del param.ters was carried out to approxim.tely m.tch the sim.lated and experim.ntal responses up to 80% of the peak load in the post peak region. Interestingly, the sam. values of various param.ters(energy dissipation and pinching related param.ters) were obtained for all fi ve test specim.ns.

Sm.ll-area estim.tion of forest stand structure in Jalisco, m.xico

Natural resource statistics are often unavailable for sm.ll ecological or econom.c regions and policym.kers have to rely on state-level datasets to evaluate the status of their resources （i.e., forests, rangelands, grasslands, agriculture, etc.） at the regional or local level. These resources can be evaluated using sm.ll-area estim.tion techniques. However, it is unknown which sm.ll area technique produces the m.st valid and precise results. The reliability and accuracy of two m.thods, synthetic and regression estim.tors, used in sm.llarea analyses, were exam.ned in this study. The two sm.ll-area analysis m.thods were applied to data from.Jalisco＇s state-wide natural resource inventory to exam.ne how well each technique predicted selected characteristics of forest stand structure. The regression m.thod produced the m.st valid and precise estim.tes of forest stand characteristics at m.ltiple geographical scales. Therefore, state and local resource m.nagers should utilize the regression m.thod unless appropriate auxiliary inform.tion is not available.

Association and Heritability Studies for Drought Resistance under Varied m.isture Stress Regim.s in Backcross Inbred Population of Rice

Drought stress is one of the m.jor constraints affecting rice production and yield stability in the rainfed regions. To understand the physiological basis of drought resistance related com.onent traits, we used a backcross inbred population of rice under three kinds of m.isture regim.s viz., non-stress, m.derate （24.48%） and severe stress （73.97%） conditions which reflect the differential responses of the genotypes to varying stress intensities. The plot yield, 1000-grain weight, panicle exsertion and canopy air tem.erature difference exhibited high heritability under the control conditions, whereas spikelet sterility and single plant yield exhibited high heritability under the m.derate stress conditions. Traits such as days to 50% flowering, plant height and osm.tic potential showed high heritability under the severe stress conditions. Plot yield under stress was significantly and positively correlated with harvest index and 1000-grain weight, but negatively associated with leaf rolling score and days to 50% flowering. The drought susceptibility index and drought response index were negatively correlated between each other both under the m.derate and severe stress conditions. The derived traits viz., difference in panicle length between the control and the severe stress was associated with osm.tic adjustm.nt m.asured under field conditions. Difference in plant height and panicle length was negatively associated with plot yield under stress.

Influence of clim.tic conditions,topography and soil attributes on the spatial distribution of site productivity index of the species rich forests of Jalisco,m.xico

This paper presents an approach based on field data to m.del the spatial distribution of the site productivity index （SPI） of the diverse forest types in Jalisco, m.xico and the response in SPI to site and cli-m.tic conditions. A linear regression m.del was constructed to test the hypothesis that site and clim.te variables can be used to predict the SPI of the m.jor forest types in Jalisco. SPI varied significantly with topog-raphy （elevation, aspect and slope）, soil attributes （pH, sand and silt）, clim.te （tem.erature and precipitation zones） and forest type. The m.st im.ortant variable in the m.del was forest type, which accounted for 35% of the variability in SPI. Tem.erature and precipitation accounted for 8 to 9% of the variability in SPI while the soil attributes accounted for less than 4% of the variability observed in SPI. No significant differences were detected between the observed and predicted SPI for the individual forest types. The linear regression m.del was used to develop m.ps of the spatial variability in predicted SPI for the individual forest types in the state. The spatial site productivity m.dels developed in this study provides a basis for understanding the com.lex relationship that exists between forest productivity and site and clim.tic conditions in the state. Findings of this study will assist resource m.nagers in m.king cost-effective decisions about the m.nagem.nt of individual forest types in the state of Jalisco, m.xico.

Visually m.delling Collaborative Research into Innovative Com.unity Disaster Resilience Practice,Strategy,and Governance

In 2013 a new collaborative center was established in Wellington, New Zealand to focus on integrating resilience research with the region’s com.unity disaster resilience strategy. An earlier study with parties to this center had indicated that researcher and practitioner groups were divided by attention to their own im.ediate knowledge and skills, but agreed there was a need to m.xim.ze com.unity resilience benefits am.ngst a regional population. An action research workshop of researchers and practitioners used a visual logic m.del to focus on the pragm.tic benefits of im.roving com.unity resilience. The visual logic m.del was used to design research activities that would im.rove the regional com.unity resilience strategy, which was still in an early im.lem.ntation *** of 14 workshop participants were interviewed following the workshop. Statistical content analysis of interview data highlighted certain strengths of the action research process: visual m.nitoring and evaluation planning was a catalyst for com.licated conversations between two very different groups of professionals; and researchers becam. m.re focused on practical issues as a result. Other findings suggested that in future collaborative researchgovernance would benefit from.wider cycles of strategic intelligence, enhanced research contributions, and the use of different inform.tion form.ts for different *** form.ts for different purposes should also be considered when developing and im.lem.nting large-scale disaster risk reduction policies and strategies.

Disruption of colonic barrier function and induction of m.diator release by strains of Cam.ylobacter jejuni that invade epithelial cells

AIm. To study the m.chanism. by which Cam.ylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) causes inflam.ation and diarrhea. In particular, direct interactions with intestinal epithelial cells and effects on barrier function are poorly under- stood. m.THODS: To m.del the initial pathogenic effects of C. jejuni on intestinal epithelium. polarized hum.n colonic HCA-7 m.nolayers were grown on perm.abilized filters and infected apically with clinical isolates of C. jejuni. Integrity of the m.nolayer was m.nitored by changes in m.nolayer resistance, release of lactate dehydrogenase, m.nnitol fluxes and electron m.croscopy. Invasion of HCA-7 cells was assessed by a m.dified gentam.cin protection assay, translocation by counting colony form.ng units in the basal cham.er, stim.lation of m.diator release by im.unoassays and secretory responses in m.nolayers stim.lated by bradykinin in an Ussing cham.er. RESULTS: All strains translocated across m.nolayers but only a m.nority invaded HCA-7 cells. Strains that invaded HCA-7 cells destroyed m.nolayer resistance over 6 h, accom.anied by increased release of lactate dehydrogenase, a four-fold increase in perm.ability to [3H] m.nnitol, and ultrastructural disruption of tight junctions, with rounding and lifting of cells off the filter m.m.rane. Synthesis of interleukin (IL)-8 and prostaglandin E2 was increased with strains that invaded the m.nolayer but not with those that did not. CONCLUSION: These data dem.nstrate two distinct effects of C. jejuni on colonic epithelial cells and provide an inform.tive m.del for further investigation of initial host cell responses to C. jejuni.
