Zircon U-Pb-Hf constraints from Gongga Shan granites on young crustal melting in eastern Tibet

The Gongga Shan batholith is a complex granitoid batholith on the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau with a long history of magmatism spanning from the Triassic to the Pliocene. Late Miocene-Pliocene units are the youngest exposed crustal melts within the entire Asian plate of the Tibetan ***, we present in-situ zircon Hf isotope constraints on their magmatic source, to aid the understanding of how these young melts were formed and how they were exhumed to the surface. Hf isotope signatures of Eocene to Pliocene zircon rims(ε_(Hf)(t)=-4 to +4), interpreted to have grown during localised crustal melting, are indicative of melting of a Neoproterozoic source region, equivalent to the nearby exposed Kangding Complex. Therefore, we suggest that Neoproterozoic crust underlies this region of the Songpan-Ganze terrane, and sourced the intrusive granites that form the Gongga Shan batholith. Localised young melting of Neoproterozoic lower or middle crust requires localised melt-fertile lithologies. We suggest that such melts may be equivalent to seismic and magnetotelluric low-velocity and high-conductivity zones or "bright spots" imaged across much of the Tibetan Plateau. The lack of widespread exposed melts this age is due either to the lack of melt-fertile rocks in the middle crust, the very low erosion level of the Tibetan plateau, or to a lack of mechanism for exhuming such melts. For Gongga Shan, where some melting is younger than nearby thermochronological ages of low temperature cooling, the exact process and timing of exhumation remains enigmatic, but their location away from the Xianshuihe fault precludes the fault acting as a conduit for the young melts. We suggest that underthrusting of dry granulites of the lower Indian crust(Archaean shield) this far northeast is a plausible mechanism to explain the uplift and exhumation of the eastern Tibetan Plateau.

Identifying female phenotypes that promote behavioral isolation in a sexually dimorphic species of fish Etheostoma zonale

In sexually dimorphic species characterized by exaggerated male ornamentation,behavioral isola-tion is often attributed to female preferences for conspecific male ***,in a number of sexu-ally dimorphic species,male mate choice also results in behavioral *** many of these cases,the female traits that mediate species boundaries are *** in sexually dimorphic species typically lack many of the elaborate traits that are present in males and that are often used for taxonomic classification of *** a diverse and largely sexually dimorphic group of fishes called darters(Percidae:Etheostoma),male mate choice contributes to behavioral isolation be-tween a number of species;however,studies addressing which female traits males prefer are *** this study,we identified the dominant female pattern for two sympatric species,Etheostoma zonale and Etheostoma barrenense,using pattern energy analysis,and we used discriminate func-tion analysis to identify which aspects of female patterning can reliably classify *** then tested the role of female features in male mate choice for ***,by measuring male preference for computer animations displaying the identified(species specific)conspecific *** found that the region above the lateral line is important in mediating male mate preferences,with males spending a significantly greater proportion of time with animations exhibiting conspecific female patterning in this region than with animations exhibiting heterospecific female *** results suggest that the aspects of female phenotypes that are the target of male mate choice are different from the conspicuous male phenotypes that traditionally characterize species.

Using a procedure based on interpolation via continued fractions supplemented by statistical sampling,we analyze proton magnetic form factor data obtained via electron+proton scattering on Q^(2)∈[0.027,0.55]GeV^(2)with the goal of determining the proton magnetic *** approach avoids assumptions about the function form used for data interpolation and ensuing extrapolation onto Q^(2)■0 for extraction of the form factor *** this way,we find r_(M)=0.817(27)*** the difference between proton electric and magnetic radii calculated in this way,extant data are seen to be compatible with the possibility that the slopes of the proton Dirac and Pauli form factors,F1,2(Q^(2)),are not truly independent observables;to wit,the difference F_(1)’(0)-F_(2)’(0)/κp=[1+Kp]/[4 m_(p)^(2)],viz.,the proton Foldy term.

Genomic structural variation in tomato and its role in plant immunity

It is well known that large genomic variations can greatly impact the phenotype of an *** Variants(SVs)encompass any genomic variation larger than 30 base pairs,and include changes caused by deletions,inversions,duplications,transversions,and other genome *** to their size and complex nature,until recently,it has been difficult to truly capture these *** advances in sequencing technology and computational analyses now permit more extensive studies of SVs in plant *** tomato,advances in sequencing technology have allowed researchers to sequence hundreds of genomes from tomatoes,and tomato *** studies have identified SVs related to fruit size and flavor,as well as plant disease response,resistance/susceptibility,and the ability of plants to detect pathogens(immunity).In this review,we discuss the implications for genomic structural variation in plants with a focus on its role in tomato *** also discuss how advances in sequencing technology have led to new discoveries of SVs in more complex genomes,the current evidence for the role of SVs in biotic and abiotic stress responses,and the outlook for genetic modification of SVs to advance plant breeding objectives.

The idea that plate tectonics may not have operated deep in Earth’s Precambrian past has a long legacy. What predated plate tectonics is unknown, and advances in data - from geochemical,geological and tectonic, to paleomagnetic, as well as modelling approaches,and planetary science, have the potential to contribute significantly to the debate. To contrast with the activity of plate tectonics,in this issue we use the term ‘lid tectonics’ to encapsulate a variety of envisaged regimes e from stagnant, sluggish, plutonicsquishy,or heat pipe - which are characterized by comparatively subdued tectonic *** special issue of Geoscience Frontiers aims to present a snapshot of current research in the field of lid-tectonics - from detailed field interpretations, to global conceptual models, data compilations,and insights from simulations, and provide unique insights into both the Precambrian Earth, and the dynamics of lid-tectonics.

Increasing data resources are available for documenting and detecting changes in environmental,ecological,and socioeconomic ***,data are distributed across a wide variety of sources(*** silos)and published in a variety of formats,scales,and semantic representations.A key issue,therefore,in building systems that can realize a vision of earth system monitoring remains data *** global grid systems(DGGSs)have emerged as a key technology that can provide a common multi-resolution spatial fabric in support of Digital Earth ***,DGGSs remain in their infancy with many technical,conceptual,and operational *** renewed interest in DGGS brought on by a recently proposed standard,the demands of big data,and growing needs for monitoring environmental changes across a variety of scales,we seek to highlight current challenges that we see as central to moving the field(s)and technologies of DGGS *** each of the identified challenges,we illustrate the issue and provide a potential solution using a reference DGGS *** articulation of these challenges,we hope to identify a clear research agenda,expand the DGGS research footprint,and provide some ideas for moving forward towards a scaleable Digital Earth *** such challenges helps the GIScience research community to achieve the real benefits of DGGS and provides DGGS an opportunity to play a role in the next generation of GIS.

Optimal and interactive keyframe selection for motion capture

Motion capture is increasingly used in games and movies, but often requires editing before it can be used, for many reasons. The motion may need to be adjusted to correctly interact with virtual objects or to fix problems that result from mapping the motion to a character of a different size or, beyond such technical requirements, directors can request stylistic ***, editing is laborious because of the lowlevel representation of the data. While existing motion editing methods accomplish modest changes, larger edits can require the artist to "re-animate" the motion by manually selecting a subset of the frames as *** this paper, we automatically find sets of frames to serve as keyframes for editing the motion. We formulate the problem of selecting an optimal set of keyframes as a shortest-path problem, and solve it efficiently using dynamic programming. We create a new simplified animation by interpolating the found keyframes using a naive curve fitting technique. Our algorithm can simplify motion capture to around 10% of the original number of frames while retaining most of its detail. By simplifying animation with our algorithm, we realize a new approach to motion editing and stylization founded on the timetested keyframe interface. We present results that show our algorithm outperforms both research algorithms and a leading commercial tool.

Dendritic cells （DCs） are immune cells specialized to capture, process and present antigen to T cells in order to initiate an appropriate adaptive immune response. The study of mouse DC has revealed a heterogeneous population of cells that differ in their development, surface phenotype and function. The study of human blood and spleen has shown the presence of two subsets of conventional DC including the CDlb/c＋ and CD141＋CLEC9A＋ conventional DC （cDC） and a plasmacytoid DC （pDC） that is CD304＋CD123＋. Studies on these subpopulations have revealed phenotypic and functional differences that are similar to those described in the mouse. In this study, the three DC subsets have been generated in vitrofrom human CD34＋ precursors in the presence of fins-like tyrosine kinase 3 ligand （FIt3L） and thrombopoietin （TPO）. The DC subsets so generated, including the CDlb/c＋ and CLEC9A＋ cDCs and CD123 ＋ pDCs, were largely similar to their blood and spleen counterparts with respect to surface phenotype, toll-like receptor and transcription factor expression, capacity to stimulate T cells, cytokine secretion and cross-presentation of antigens. This system may be utilized to study aspects of DC development and function not possible in vivo.

Cooperative adaptive bidirectional control of a train platoon for efficient utility and string stability

This paper proposes cooperative adaptive control schemes for a train platoon to improve efficient utility and guarantee string stability. The control schemes are developed based on a bidirectional strategy, i.e., the information of proximal（preceding and following） trains is used in the controller design. Based on available proximal information（prox-info） of location, speed, and acceleration, a direct adaptive control is designed to maintain the tracking interval at the minimum safe distance. Based on available prox-info of location, an observer-based adaptive control is designed to achieve the same target, which alleviates the requirements of equipped sensors to measure prox-info of speed and acceleration. The developed schemes are capable of on-line estimating of the unknown system parameters and stabilizing the closed-loop system, the string stability of train platoon is guaranteed on the basis of Lyapunov stability theorem. Numerical simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control laws.
