Peyronie’s disease(PD)is a condition of penile connective tissue affecting up to 10%of men worldwide.In the complexity ofits management,nonsurgical treatments,such as intraplaque injections,are gaining attention.The current literature shows dataon the efficacy of intraplaque injections of hyaluronic acid(HA)mainly in acute-phase PD.However,data on injections of HA instable-phase PD are lacking.Data for this retrospective study were derived from a prospectively maintained database of privatepatients presenting at a private medical practice affiliated to the University of Naples“Federico II”(Naples,Italy)with stable-phasePD between January 2020 and March 2023.Patients underwent a standard protocol of three injections,each administered at atwo-week interval.During the intervals,patients performed vacuum device therapy,penile stretching,and modeling exercises.Allpatients compiled the Peyronie’s Disease Questionnaire(PDQ)and Global Assessment of Peyronie’s Disease(GAPD)at baselineand 2 weeks after the third injection.A penile Doppler ultrasound was performed 2 weeks after the last injection to record thefinal curvature.Overall,we recruited 62 patients with stable-phase PD and a mean(±standard deviation[s.d.])curvature of52.7°(±9.7°).After 6 weeks,eight(12.9%)patients did not experience any curvature improvement.The remaining 54 patientshad a final mean(±s.d.)curvature of 40.3°(±9.1°)with P<0.001,compared to that before treatment.We found improvement inall PDQ domains(all P≤0.01),and 50(80.6%)patients reported subjective improvement of the penile curvature according to theGAPD.In conclusion,we demonstrated that after three injections of HA administered according to the adopted protocol,patientswith stable-phase PD could experience significant improvements in penile curvature,and physical and psychological consequencesof the disease without significantly relevant side effects.

Efficacy and safety of low-intensity shockwave therapy plus tadalafil 5 mg once daily in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus and erectile dysfunction:a matched-pair comparison study

Low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy(LiESWT)represents a promising treatment for patients with erectile dysfunction(ED).We investigated the efficacy of LiESWT combined with tadalafil 5 mg once daily in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and ED and compared LiESWT protocols administering different number of shockwaves.We performed a retrospective matched-pair comparison using data from a prospectively maintained database.Seventy-eight patients who received tadalafil 5 mg once dai7ly for 12 weeks+LiESWT performed with an electrohydraulic source for 3 weeks(Group A)were matched 1:1 to patients who received tadalafil 5 mg once daily alone for 12 weeks(Group B).A subgroup analysis was performed according to the number of shockwaves delivered during each session(1500,1800,and 2400 in subgroup A1,A2,and A3,respectively).The mean International Index of Erectile Function-5(IIEF-5)score variations with respect to baseline recorded at 4,12,and 24 weeks after the end of the treatment were investigated as treatment outcomes.The mean IIEF-5 scores significantly improved in all groups and subgroups at 4-week follow-up without intergroup differences.At 12-and 24-week follow-up,the mean IIEF-5 improvement was significantly higher among patients in the A3 subgroup(+5.0±2.1[Plafil 5 mg once daily and LiESWT with a protocol involving 2400 shockwaves provides significant advantages in terms of IIEF-5 improvement and durability compared to tadalafil 5 mg once daily alone in patients with T2DM and ED.

Systematic review of the non surgical management of Peyronie's disease

This systematic review shows the "Status quo" on medical treatment for Peyronie's disease(PD). PD is a connective tissue disorder, characterised by the formation of a fibrotic lesion or plaque in the tunica albuginea, which leads to penile deformity. The aetiology of PD is unknown. Nowadays the most widely accepted hypothesis proposed by Gonzalez-Cadavid et al, is repetitive microvascular injury or trauma to the tunica albuginea. Physicians have proposed several medical alternatives for treatment of this disease with few effective results. Nevertheless, as of today nonsurgical options are currently available, and some of them are able to stabilize or even reduce deformity while improving pain relief and sexual function. A systematic literature search throughout the Medline database was carried out. Thecontrolled vocabulary of the medical subject headings database employs the specific term "penile induratio" for PD. A total of 50 articles on PD were found. Studies were selected based on clinical relevance. The recommended standard of care for PD involves an initial treatment in the acute phase. Several non-operative treatment options have been used. Unfortunately no further substantial, quality evidence on the use of medical therapy currently exits. There is, however, an increasingly enhanced interest in this disorder and basic scientifi c and clinical research will eventually lead to a more effective methodology to study the disease.

Seismic data of earthquakes recorded during the last 40 years in southern Calabria have been compared with geological data in order to obtain a seismotectonic picture of the area. We sought for any possible correlation between the main regional tectonic structures, the distribution of earthquake hypocentres and the focal mechanism of earthquakes with magnitude(Ml)≥3.Studies of historical and recent seismicity and analysis of geological structures allowed to define the main shear strips on a regional scale. More than 2600 earthquakes with 1.5 ≤ Ml ≤ 4.5 have been considered. The focal mechanisms of earthquakes with Ml≥3 have been compared with the kinematics of known faults and used to give insight on the current active stress field. From the analysis carried out it was possible to expand the cognitive framework regarding the activity of the main tectonic structures present in the area. This study also served to identify areas of high seismicity which do not correspond to any evidence of tectonic structures on the surface, and areas where recognized tectonic structures have not shown any seismicity during the last decades. These cases could be the subject of future investigation in order to correctly assess the seismic hazard in Calabria.This task is important in the context of seismic hazard evaluation and mitigation.

Single-photon-level light storage with distributed Rydberg excitations in cold atoms

We present an improved version of the superatom(SA)model to examine the slow-light dynamics of a few-photons signal field in cold Rydberg atoms with van der Waals(vdW)interactions.A main feature of this version is that it promises consistent estimations on total Rydberg excitations based on dynamic equations of SAs or atoms.We consider two specific cases in which the incident signal field contains more photons with a smaller detuning or less photons with a larger detuning so as to realize the single-photon-level light storage.It is found that vdW interactions play a significant role even for the slow-light dynamics of a single-photon signal field as distributed Rydberg excitations are inevitable in the picture of dark-state polariton.Moreover,the stored(retrieved)signal field exhibits a clearly asymmetric(more symmetric)profile because its leading and trailing edges undergo different(identical)traveling journeys,and higher storage/retrieval efficiencies with well preserved profiles apply only to weaker and well detuned signal fields.These findings are crucial to understand the nontrivial interplay of single-photon-level light storage and distributed Rydberg excitations.

Regions of slow strain often produce swarm-like sequences,characterized by the lack of a clear mainshockaftershock pattern.The comprehension of their underlying physical mechanisms is challenging and still debated.We used seismic recordings from the last Pollino swarm(2010-2014) and nearby to separate and map seismic scattering(from P peak-delays) and absorption(from late-time coda-wave attenuation) at different frequencies in the Pollino range and surroundings.High-scattering and high-absorption anomalies are markers of a fluid-filled fracture volume extending from SE to NW(1.5-6 Hz) across the range.With increasing frequency,these anomalies approximately cover the area where the strongest earthquakes occurred from the sixteenth century until 1998.In our interpretation,the NW fracture propagation ends where carbonates of the Lucanian Apennines begin,as marked by a high-scattering and low-absorption area.At the highest frequency(12 Hz) the anomalies widen southward in the middle of the range,consistently marking the faults active during the recent Pollino swarm.Our results suggest that fracture healing has closed small-scale fractures across the SE faults that were active in the past centuries,and that the propagation of fluids may have played a crucial role in triggering the 2010-2014 Pollino swarm.Assuming that the fluid propagation ended at the carbonates barrier in the NW direction,fractures opened new paths to the South,favoring the nucleation of the last Pollino swarm.Indeed,the recently active faults in the middle of the seismogenic volume are marked by a high-scattering and highabsorption footprints.Our work provides evidence that attenuation parameters may track shape and dynamics of fluid-filled fracture networks in fault areas.

The typically tiny effect of radiation damping on a moving body can be amplified to a favorable extent by exploiting the sharp reflectivity slope at one edge of an optically induced stop-band in atoms loaded into an optical lattice.In this paper,this phenomenon is demonstrated for the periodically trapped and coherently driven cold 87Rb atoms,where radiation damping might be much larger than that anticipated in previous proposals and become comparable with radiation pressure.Such an enhancement could be observed even at speeds of only a few meters per second with less than 1.0%absorption,making radiation damping experimentally accessible.

We generalize several well known quantum equations to a Tsallis’ q-scenario, and provide a quantum version of some classical fields associated with them in the recent literature. We refer to the q-Schro¨dinger, q-KleinGordon, q-Dirac, and q-Proca equations advanced in, respectively, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 140601(2011), EPL 118,61004(2017) and references therein. We also introduce here equations corresponding to q-Yang-Mills fields, both in the Abelian and non-Abelian instances. We show how to define the q-quantum field theories corresponding to the above equations, introduce the pertinent actions, and obtain equations of motion via the minimum action principle.These q-fields are meaningful at very high energies(Te V scale) for q = 1.15, high energies(Ge V scale) for q = 1.001,and low energies(Me V scale) for q =1.000001 [Nucl. Phys. A 955(2016) 16 and references therein].(See the ALICE experiment at the LHC). Surprisingly enough, these q-fields are simultaneously q-exponential functions of the usual linear fields’ logarithms.

Heart failure is common in older people and its prevalence is increasing.The Heart ＇omics＇ in AGEing（HOMAGE） project aims to provide a biomarker approach that will improve the early diagnosis of heart failure.A large clinical database,based on（1） prospective population studies or（2） cross-sectional,prospective studies or randomized controlled trials（RCTs） of patients at risk for or with overt cardiovascular disease will be constructed to determine most promising ＇omics＇-based biomarkers to identify the risk of developing heart failure and/or comorbidities.Population studies,patient cohorts and RCTs are eligible for inclusion in the common database,if they received ethical approval to obtain and share data and have baseline information on cardiovascular risk factors.Currently,the HOMAGE database includes 43,065 subjects,from 20 studies in eight European countries,including healthy subjects from three population studies in France,Belgium and Italy（n = 7,124）,patients with heart failure（n = 4,312） from four cohorts in the UK,Spain and Switzerland and patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease（n = 31,629） in 13 cohorts.It is anticipated that more partners will join the consortium and enlarge the pooled data.This large merged database will be a useful resource with which to identify candidate biomarkers that play a role in the mechanism underlying the onset and progression of heart failure.
