Siwalik plant megafossil diversity in the eastern Himalayas: A review

The eastern Himalayas are renowned for their high plant *** understand how this modern botanical richness formed,it is critical to investigate past plant biodiversity preserved as fossils throughout the eastern Himalayan Siwalik succession(middle Miocene-early Pleistocene).Here,we present a summary of plant diversity records that document Neogene floristic and climate *** do this by compiling published records of megafossil plant remains,because these offer better spatial and temporal resolution than do palynological *** of the Siwalik floral assemblages based on the distribution of the nearest living relative taxa suggest that a tropical wet evergreen forest was growing in a warm humid monsoonal climate at the deposition *** qualitative interpretation is also corroborated by published CLAMP(Climate Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program) ***,we also reconstruct the climate by applying a new common proxy WorldClim2 *** allows the detection of subtle climate differences between floral assemblages free of artefacts introduced by using different methodologies and climate *** analysis of the Siwalik floras indicates that there was a gradual change in floral *** lower Siwalik assemblages provide evidence of a predominance of evergreen *** increase in deciduous elements in the floral composition is noticed towards the close of the middle Siwalik and the beginning of the upper Siwalik *** change reflects a climatic difference between Miocene and Plio-Pleistocene *** review helps us to understand under what paleoenvironmental conditions plant diversity occurred and evolved in the eastern Himalayas throughout the Cenozoic.

Improving Sustainability by Privatizing Wildlife Conservation

The purpose of this study is to improve environmental sustainability by identifying the most sustainable/least fragile of the three major wildlife conservation access models—open, government, and private—under varying environmental and socioeconomic conditions. The private access model is the most sustainable of the three major conservation models because it provides the best information and incentives to balance the needs of humans and wildlife, maintain general wildlife habitat, and adapt quickly to changing environmental and/or socioeconomic conditions. Government-controlled access, however, can be employed as a model of last resort if the private access model shows signs of failing to protect specific species from local extirpation or extinction, which it is most likely to do for migratory species, species with close commercial substitutes, and species with no direct commercial value. Government regulators may also be needed to enforce property rights arrangements like catch shares and to monitor resources that remain open access in case socioeconomic or environmental conditions change sufficiently to trigger the tragedy of the commons. Most treatments of wildlife regulation default to various iterations of the government access model and fail even to consider the costs and benefits of private and open access models. The analysis here instead shows the conditions in which each conservation access model is most appropriate: open when a resource is in high supply and low demand, private most of the time, and government when the others fail to slow resource depopulation/depletion.

Statistics of evolving Populations and Their Relevance to Flood Risk

Statistical methods are commonly used to evaluate natural populations and environmental variables, yet these must recognize temporal trends in population character to be appropriate in an evolving world. New equations presented here define the statistical measures of aggregate historical populations affected by linear changes in population means and standard deviations. These can be used to extract the statistical character of present-day populations, needed to define modern variability and risk, from tables of historical data that are dominated by measurements made when conditions were different. As an example, many factors such as climate change and in-channel structures are causing flood levels to rise, so realistic estimation of future flood levels must take such secular changes into account. The new equations provide estimates of water levels for ＂100-year＂ floods in the USA Midwest that are 0.5 to 2 m higher than official calculations that routinely assume population stationarity. These equations also show that flood levels will continue to rise by several centimeters per year. This rate is nearly ten times faster than the rise of sea level, and thus represents one of the fastest and most damaging rates of change that is documented by robust data.

Use of Geochemical and Geophysical Techniques to Characterize and Prospect for Geothermal Resources and Hydrothermal Ore Deposits

Fluid-rock interactions alter the geochemical, isotopic, petrographic and physical character of host rocks, producing a permanent record of hydrothermal activity. Maps of altered rock properties show regular variations that disclose master geologic controls and delineate likely sites for geothermal and mineral resources. In many cases, geochemical and stable isotope data re- veal the origins of thermal fluids, and they can also provide estimates of reservoir temperatures and identify zones of fluid recharge.

Influence of temperature and pressure during thermoforming of softwood pulp

In this study,the influence of thermoforming conditions on the resulting material properties was investigated,which aimed at developing advanced wood-fiber-based materials for the replacement of fossil *** bleached softwood pulps were studied,i.e.,northern bleached softwood Kraft pulp(NBSK)and chemi-thermomechanical softwood pulp(CTMP).The thermoforming conditions were varied between 2–100 MPa and 150–200℃,while pressing sheets of 500 g/m^(2)for 10 min to represent thin-walled packaging more *** our results showed,the temperature had a more pronounced effect on the CTMP substrates than on the Kraft *** was explained by the greater abundance of lignin and hemicelluloses,while fibrillar dimensions and the fines content may play a role in ***,the CTMP exhibited an optimum in terms of tensile strength at intermediate thermoforming *** effect was attributed to two counteracting effects:1)Improved fiber adhesion due to enhanced densification,and 2)embrittlement caused by the loss of *** temperatures likely softened the lignin,enabling fiber collapse and a tighter *** the Kraft substrates,the tensile strength increased linearly with *** pulps showed reduced wetting at elevated thermoforming temperature and pressure,which was attributed to hornification and densification ***,the effect of temperature was again more pronounced for CTMP than for the Kraft *** was concluded that the thermoforming temperature and pressure strongly affected the properties of the final *** chemical composition of the pulps will distinctly affect their response to thermoforming,which could be useful for tailoring cellulose-based replacements for packaging products.

Suppression of discontinuous precipitation and strength improvement by Sc doping in Cu-6 wt%Ag alloys

In low-Ag Cu matrix alloys,the presence of coarse discontinuous precipitates may limit *** demonstrated that discontinuous precipitation was suppressed,and continuous precipitation was en-hanced by the doping of Cu-6 wt%Ag with Sc.A high-volume fraction of continuous precipitates,which nucleated on{111}planes,led to a 55 MPa increase in strength,with only a slight decrease in electri-cal *** addition of Sc inhibited the nucleation of discontinuous precipitates by causing the Sc and the Ag to co-segregate onto grain boundaries,thus forming a thin intermetallic compound layer between *** deformation,both discontinuous and continuous precipitates were drawn into Ag *** combination of deformation strain and doping caused an increase in density and a decrease in the diameter of Ag fibers,resulting in about 205 MPa increase in doped samples when the deformation strain reached *** thinner,denser Ag fibers in the doped samples also caused higher electron scatter-ing at interfaces,leading to electrical conductivity that was 11%IACS lower than in non-doped *** reference,100%IACS(International Annealed Copper Standard)is equivalent to 1.7241μΩcm.

Development of a classification system based on corneal biomechanical properties using artificial intelligence predicting keratoconus severity

Background:To investigate machine-learning(ML)algorithms to differentiate corneal biomechanical properties between different topographical stages of keratoconus(KC)by dynamic Scheimpflug tonometry(CST,Corvis ST,Oculus,Wetzlar,Germany).In the following,ML models were used to predict the severity in a training and validation ***:Three hundred and eighteen keratoconic and one hundred sixteen healthy eyes were included in this monocentric and cross-sectional pilot *** corneal response(DCR)and corneal thickness related(pachymetric)parameters from CST were chosen by appropriated selection techniques to develop a ML *** stage of KC was determined by the topographical keratoconus classification system(TKC,Pentacam,Oculus).Patients who were classified as TKC 1,TKC 2 and TKC 3 were assigned to subgroup mild,moderate,and advanced *** patients were classified as TKC 1-2,TKC 2-3 or TKC 3-4,they were assigned to subgroups according to the normative range of further corneal indices(index of surface variance,keratoconus index and minimum radius).Patients classified as TKC 4 were not included in this study due to the limited amount of *** discriminant analysis(LDA)and random forest(RF)algorithms were used to develop the classification *** were divided into training(70%of cases)and validation(30%of cases)***:LDA model predicted healthy,mild,moderate,and advanced KC eyes with a sensitivity(S_(n))/specificity(S_(p))of 82%/97%,73%/81%,62%/83%and 68%/95%from a validation dataset,*** the RF model,a S_(n)/S_(p) of 91%/94%,80%/90%,63%/87%,72%/95%could be reached for predicting healthy,mild,moderate,and advanced KC eyes,*** overall accuracy of LDA and RF was 71%and 78%,*** accuracy for KC detection including all subgroups of KC severity was 93%in both ***:The RF model showed good accuracy in predicting healthy eyes and various stages of *** accuracy was superior with respec

Dependence of Mean and Peak Streamflow on Basin Area in the Conterminous United States

Basin area is the primary control on both mean and peak streamflows, but relationships vary with regional meteorological conditions. Rich historical data sets permit deduction of these relationships for most areas of the United States, revealing both expected and unexpected correlations. On log-log plots, mean flows for most basins with 〉75 cm/y rainfall have unit slopes, with the y-intercept approximating the mean annual runoff. Lower slopes characterize regions where runoff is greatest at high topographic elevations, or where significant withdrawals for irrigation occur at lower elevations. Peak flows also correlate strongly with basin area, but the regressions for most regions have slopes ranging from 0.4 to 0.9, and y-intercepts that increase with increasing flood recurrence interval. The slopes on these log-log plots for peak flows are highest in cool regions with low sunshine and low evapotranspiration, and lowest where sunshine is abundant, evapotranspiration is high, and small convective storm cells are common. effects of relief are small and inconsistent. Peak flows of small watersheds are huge compared to their mean flows, commonly being several thousand times greater, particularly in the USA midcontinent where the slopes for peak flows are low.

BACKGROUND QTc interval prolongation with an increased risk of torsade de pointes(Tsd)has been described in coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)patients treated with hydroxychloroquine(HCQ)and azithromycin(AZI)in Western *** the DR Congo,few studies have evaluated the safety of this association or proposed new *** To determine the incidence of QTc prolongation and Tsd in COVID-19 patients treated with HCQ-AZIs vs doubase C(new molecule).MeTHODS In present randomized clinical trial,we have included patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 treated with either HCQ-AZI or doubase ***(eCG)changes on day 14 of randomization were determined based on pretreatment *** QTc was defined as≥500 ms on day 14 or an increase of≥80 ms compared to pretreatment *** with cardiac disease,those undergoing other treatments likely to prolong QTc,and those with disturbed eCG tracings were excluded from the *** The study included 258 patients(mean age 41±15 years;52%men;3.4%diabetics,11.1%hypertensive).Mild and moderate COVID-19 were found in 93.5%and 6.5%of patients,*** baseline,all patients had normal sinus rhythm,a mean heart rate 78±13/min,mean PR space 170±28 ms,mean QRS 76±13 ms,and mean QTc 405±30 *** complaints suggesting cardiac involvement were reported during or after *** four patients(1.5%)experienced QTc interval prolongation beyond 500 ***,only five patients(1.9%)had an increase in the QTc interval of more than 80 *** prolongation was more significant in younger patients,those with high viral load at baseline,and those receiving HCQ-AZI(Pe of the patients developed *** QTc prolongation without Tsd was observed at a lower frequency in patients treated with HCQ-AZI vs doubase *** absence of comorbidities and concurrent use of other products that are likely to cause arrhythmia may explain our results.

River Management and Flooding: The Lesson of December 2015–January 2016, Central USA

The huge winter storm of December 23-29, 2015 delivered heavy rainfall in a broad swath across the USA, deluging east-Central Missouri. Record high river levels were set at many sites, but damages were most pronounced in developed floodplain areas, particularly where high levees were built or river channels greatly narrowed. An average of 20 cm of rain that mostly fell in three days impacted the entire 10 300 km2 Meramec Basin. Compared to the prior record flood of 1982, the highest relative stage（＋1.3 m） on Meramec River occurred at Valley Park proximal to（1） a new levee,（2） a landfill in the floodway,（3） large floodplain construction fills, and（4） tributary creek basins impacted by suburban sprawl. even though only a small fraction of the 1.8 million km2 Mississippi River watershed above St. Louis received extraordinary rainfall during this event, the huge channelized river near and below St. Louis rapidly rose to set the 3rd-highest to the highest stages ever, exhibiting the flashy response typical of a much smaller river.
